Title: BSC2023 Snitchythedog Chronomancrs shrine
Post by: snitcythedog on January 25, 2023, 07:11:14 PM
Just what it says on the package.  A shrine to time based magic users.

This should be intriguing - I always ty to imagine what someone's stated build could look like. I have no idea what this will turn out to be, although it does promise to be cool.

Pretty sure there'll be a clocktower somewhere on this one ;)

Good luck! :)

I am currently in the middle of a fairly involved Frostgrave build that is likely to absorb any hobby time I might have had for BSC2023 so I will be watching this one with particular interest. Good luck!

While we are waiting I am posting some of my research.  As guessed I am doing a clock tower for my shrine.  I do not want to do a regular clock as that will not fit into Frostgrave or other fantasy settings that I play so each face will be loosely based on some real clocks not traditional twelve hour cycles.
Posting some of my inspiration photos here.
First face I will do a mechanical clock that is not a standard twelve hour day and incorporates some planetary or star settings.
Second face will be loosely based on the Mayan long count calendar but not as detailed as my eyes will no longer cope with that amount of detail in 28/32 mm.
Next will be a mechanical cylinder clock.

Last will be a bog standard sun dial

I also want to incorporate a dice tower since I am in desperate need of one.

That should be suitably monumental and worshipable (if it wasn't already, it's now an actual word :D )!

Just a first post of my efforts so far this morning.  The clock tower face is made of foamex that is textured with a stone and scribe to look like cut stone.  3d printed 10mm skeleton regiments from Etsy were added for statuary and I am trying cotton string stabilized with superglue for the decorative stone work.  The blank space will be where the clock face inserts.  As you can see the tower is open in the center as I am planning on using it as a dice tower.  Now I only have three more faces to do.

The speed!
I can't take credit for that.  I am using a balsa strip cutter to cut the basic parts.

With Foamex it takes the time measuring and all that out of the equation.

Took me some time to learn how to use it without slicing the hell out of myself.

I managed to finish up the other three sides this afternoon.  I have included Tim the Enchanter for scale.

I finished the first two faces.  The sun dial is just some sheets of mat board and stencil paper scribes for the grooves, a punched sun, brass letters and some brass wire.

The long count calendar is not great but it will do.  It is made of scribed foamex with some 15mm skulls from CP models.

Finished the mechanical clock face.  Unfortunately my circle cutter exploded into my thumb when I was cutting out the last large circle on the segmented backing.  I managed not to bleed on the paper but pretty much hit the highlights everywhere else.  Off to the pictures.

Finished the last clock face. It took me two attempts.  The first I finished up last night and I tried to scribe the spiral onto the cylinder and was not real happy with any of the attempts that I tried.  Here is what I came up with.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeBfLStLt8jac2Ayv5eh3-U6QPT2YUi8rJvJ76OAoIqE66_HFkUyGKBp7qV2PnWv27zzugCifEyhBT_xFmF5_XpfvQc34dj9IvGMfFhs9fvZ_YHBg2SlFioAAtdzUBtJ0IBDlrjc0YkFdjMnO8B1lcB-JfdEgINrJjEfHqd5NuglGN5sjPVYJKJ40d/s1106/IMG_3038.jpg)
On the second I glued a thin wire and spiraled that and it came up much better.  I also made it a bit more ornate and I think it came out better.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicY-Xq9CEDHVaHdTTyrugKvKNQ_iS_HL4_9LlG4nGmBWFI3OBn0vf4hFKH3sdc3K74tFcfIRnzSBmwaC9yJirLK9uRbT_jA5FmZh7VnhXexc7MeRKOYu0k3UiAMk-A_ISBucjXOkrHfOvP_c7GMNUQA1Q8t2QBe7rLaXPXhkf1Dhh1LjZJZYcivZxe/s1171/IMG_3042.jpg)
Here is what it looks like in place.

I have finished most of the basic construction and now it is off to gap filling and adding more details.
I added ramps to the inside walls of the dice tower and primed the interior walls as I can't paint them later.  Glued the walls together and now It can stand on its own four legs.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH4yF49d0yuwnRYIK9vbnCMk6xoHyAwVPp47Es8_DoL81P1y3xtDJnRplyC_1_b48h31Sk_Cv-BtPCqcEx3ToxXAWPveCkABDZQ9C_whsmba3Qa8SALcR7E7de6pv0OECWEfDLRJHJ8fVDhP8bHArTtuDNfarvc5_YL2oYD5jwfY8_dsl_ZLlOkgim/s2685/IMG_3066.jpg)
The roof is still not attached as I have not decided if I am going to embellish it more.
The dice tray is going to be a pool.  Four different symbols and stonework was scribed into the base.  The pyramid will send the dice tumbling out from under the tower.  That was made with stencil paper and I glued three progressively smaller pyramids to nest inside this one to strengthen the tip and edges.  The coins were made with a variety of punches.

Here is the whole thing dry fitted together.

I managed to fill all of the gaps and glued all of the assemblies together.  I did the whole build without breaking any of the printed spears and broke two while I was filling gaps.  At this point I am calling the build portion done.  Tinkered with another couple of ideas but decided against them.

No I have another project on the burner so I think will just paint this one up in before the deadline.
And now I have to visit CP models for some of those skulls for a completely different project!
They are in the Crom's Anvil range. https://cpmodels.co.uk/shop/ca1526-skulls/ (https://cpmodels.co.uk/shop/ca1526-skulls/)
For those that are looking, they have some nice pots in the Crom's Anvil range that will easily fit in 28mm.

There is one built into the pool.  I toyed with making one of the clock faces an hourglass but dropped it as I did not want to work out a mechanism to turn the glass.

Congratulations all that moved on in the voting.  I can post pictures now since I did not make it out of the first heat.
Hope you like.

This model is SO cool. I can't imagine how I forgot about it when setting up voting for the first round, knowing you'd finished it in record time too!
I might borrow this idea for a build of my own in the future  :D 8)

Great job mate, truly inspiring build and amazing paintjob, as said the weathering on the emtals is just  :-*
I'd almost say you was robbed, but I have to admit you had some stiff competition, but I was glad I was able to give you my vote in the end.
