Title: BSC2023 McMordain's Shrine of the Imperial Cult
Post by: McMordain on January 25, 2023, 09:13:35 PM
I will (try) to do an Imperial Cult shrine, with some Cawdor caretakers for Necromunda games.
I have few bits that I plan to use as sacred relics, but no overall idea how it will look like.
I want to build something that I can use on normal boards and with the Zone Mortalis floor tiles as well.

Sounds just right; I'll be watching with interest on behalf of my own Cawdors...

Best of luck! :)

I was thinking about how to do this.
Two things came to mind.
One, to build something relatively small, that can fit on a normal and on a Zone Mortalis board as well. A small shrine with a little building for the Cawdor gangers guarding it. But I may even finish this well before the deadline so
option two, something much bigger, with the footprint of a Zone Mortalis tile. An old ruin converted to the purpose of a temple with sacred relics inside. Maybe even a stained glass window.
Then I thought why not both  :D These could all fit to the max three base rule, if that is still in place.

Sounds just right; I'll be watching with interest on behalf of my own Cawdors...

Best of luck! :)

I'm more of an Escher fan, but a chem-lab didn't seem fitting for the theme :P
I hope my humble offering will not draw ire of House Cawdor  :)

Think it is good to be considering the size that often comes as an after thought and then there is also always the problem of storage. This is sounding good.

The stained glass window really got stuck in my head and I thought a lot how to include it.
I decided that it will be the main "attraction" of the shrine. The window miraculously survived the passing of time in the underhive, Cawdor gangers found it and made it the base of worship.

This was my first (rough) plan for the building, just to have a starting point.

Then a second idea came to mind. Which is that just a piece of wall remained with the glass window, and the Cawdor built a protective building around it. Something really ramshackle and hodgepodge mass of materials.

I'm currently undecided which way to go...  ???

Love the idea of a ruined wall with the glass enshrined in a building.

Fits my view of a hive full of rusting metal but artefacts of a grander age being kept and venerated...

Yeah the more I think about it, the more I like the second version. I will go with that.

I searched for some 40k art pieces to us as the base for the stained glass. The idea is to trace the outline, print it, then transfer it to a clear sheet of plastic with a permanent marker. After that, color it with paint. Basically how it is done in this video. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhezxI6ye5Y)

I like how this turned out. I will make a test to see, how it looks in size for the ruin.
If it does not work, I will use this instead:

Done quick test with the various pencils I have at hand. I think the result is good enough.

Tomorrow I will buy some proper alcoholic markers.

I would think a gothic arched window on one side and a round rose window in the end, with a lean too type structure leaning on the old wall perhaps ?

Thanks guys!

I spent money today on some alcoholic markers which turned out to be completely unnecessary. The markers bought did not worked well, then it occurred to me why not use paints... I have a lot of contrast paints which could work. And it did... I should think more before spending money :(

Anyway I painted a test piece and it looks good, so I will go with that.
Next question is how to proceed. My problem is half in universe one and half practical.
The Cawdor would definitely want to protect this holy find, which means covering it up. But if I cover it, then it wouldn't be visible from outside, which means I also have to fully make the interior. I wouldn't mind that but I doubt I can finish it in time. Also I think the inside would be rarely used ingame.
I could make the wall section, with the stained glass, part of the exterior wall of the building, essentially building a temple. I wouldn't have to do the interior, and I could even put in some led lights. But then what stops a disgruntled enemy of the Cawdor or some heretics to shoot the thing to bits? Or what protects it from some random, unrelated gang violence?

While thinking about this I did a quick mockup to get a sense of the possible size of the build.
Version 1
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/58/8499-060223214137-580452030.jpeg)
I like this one better but covering this up will be a pain. Also the intended footprint probably to small for this height.

Version 2
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/58/8499-060223214137-580471589.jpeg)
This would be easier to do, but I don't really like the look of it.

Maybe I should go with a middle option... o_o

Well progress was basically nonexistent in the last couple of weeks. I just couldn't get into the mood to build.
On the other hand I decided on the way to build this thing, and today I was able to sit down and start it.

Instead of making a standing wall section, the window will lean into a big pipe on ground level. This way I can build a walled compound around it.
I made the basic shape of the walls, and added a block to one side so I have base to make the living quarters of the Cawdor.
The walls will be concrete with metal reinforcements and I will add a parapet along the walls made in a ramshackle way. The slimmer tube will hold a crow's nest like lookout.

Also I found a couple of small led candles, which I bought years ago. I will seal up the space behind the glass and put one in there. One side will be removable though, so I can turn it off or remove it to change the battery.
This is a test with the glass I made previously.
Tomorrow I will paint the new glass and start working on the ruin section and the walls.

Oh and the whole thing got bigger as I couldn't fit it on a 12"x12" board. It just didn't look good. So it is on a 40cmx40cm base now.
I have no idea if I will be able to finish it on time though...

I made some progress in the last two weeks I'm just bad at making regular updates...

So, I added some details to the window ruin.
It will have more, but first I want to put the wall sections and the big pipe in place.
Speaking of them, I also added a top section to the pringels tube.
I imagine it going up all the way to the ceiling, so there will be nothing on top.
For the walls I first added strips of plastic, then textured the sections with AK concrete diorama pasta, just like I did with my motel build last year. The damaged parts were also done the same way like last time. Cutting out some bits, drilling a few holes the gluing in a piece of wire.

In the meantime I ordered some stuff from GreenStuffWorld, among them a silicon mold for various rivets and bolts. My own ones made with bluestuff will be not enough, as I want to add a lot to the walls. And it will be useful for future builds as well.

And here is the detailing on the building part so far.

Still a lot of work to do... but I'm getting there.

Looking very cool.  I particularly like the idea of the stained glass window.  The GSW mold is a good bit of kit.  Works best with milliput or similar putty as green stuff is too springy.

I'm not dead (yet ::)) but the last few weeks were awefull in regards for hobby time.
Between being tired from overtime at work, being ill and now being ill and having my young nephews for a week and being tired from overtime is seriously killing my hobby mojo  :(
I made some progress since last time (proof bellow) and I will try to make a proper post detailing it over the weekend.

I'm not willing to give up yet though. I booked the next week at work for holiday, and if the dentist does not kill me mentally tomorrow, I plan to spend the last 7 days of the BSC holed up in my hobby room to finish this thing.

So I'm still kicking but I'm also way behind schedule....

This is were things stood on Monday
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/58/8499-120423135536-58655211.jpeg)

The two wall sections and the pringles tube secured to the base; the living quarters mostly done, except for the parapets on the roof; the gatehouse container cut and glued together.

I used some small nails to secure the walls to the base.

Yesterday I finished the rooftop of the living quarters.

I added some details to the stained glass ruin and glued in the glass part as well.
As you can see I put down some texture for the base. It was easier to do at this phase.

Today I worked (and will continue after I post this :) ) on the gate and the comms/look out tower. I will also add some shooting positions and the extra level to the walls.
I'm pretty sure I can finish this today or early tomorrow.
The problem is, I don't think I can paint it in time... I will try, but we will see.

On a different note I have always trouble keeping the various plastic shapes that are left, after cutting them, in order. It's always a mess and often I cut up a bigger piece instead of using an already cut of one. Then I have seen this in the supermarket:
It really helps while building and keeps my desk a little bit less cluttered. :D

Thanks all. :)

Added the rivets onto the living quarters wall and some smaller ones for the various panels on the building.

I decided on a sliding door for the gate.
It works at the moment. Hopefully it will work after painting as well. I will paint the pieces separately.

I needed a 17 cm long ladder for the Lookout/comms tower, so I made one.
I have these wood blocks, and two of them together have the perfect size for a ladder.
Masking tape helped to keep them together and I could mark the steps on the tape.

The sides of the ladder are L-shape profiles which are secured to the blocks with masking tape.
The steps are half-rods cut to size.

The finished ladder is secured to the tower with some small nails and plastic tubes help keeping an even distance.

The "front" of the build at the moment.

So the building part is done (more or less). I could spend an other 1 or 2 day to add details, but I don't have the time, and this should be a gaming piece not a diorama :P

WIPs of the extra walls.

and the full build.

There are still some things that needs to be done, but those have to be included into the painting phase so no pics from this point forward.
I don't think I will be done, as while technically I have two one-and-a-half day left, I have things to do tomorrow...
I will see how far I can go today.

I have to finally admit that I will not make it. I put on the main colors with an airbrush, and drybrushed some of the parts, but then I realized I don't have chipping medium for the weathering.  :(
Then there are the smaller details, and I have to glue together the parts, add the texture to the base, then paint that too. To much work unfortunately.

I'm looking forward to seeing your paint job on this.

Well don't expect much, I'm not good at painting terrain...

Well I finally found some time to post some pictures about the painting in progress:

I tried out some AK chipping mediums and weathering with various enamel products and oil paints.
The front gate and the container above it is basically done. The housing block's lower part is done, but the upper part still needs the weathering. I will do that after I glue it to the base.
I also need to do the weathering with the oils on the fence and the big pipe, but it still needs to be varnished before that. There is a lot of work left on the lookout tower (not on the pictures) and there is a couple of odds and ends that needs painting (like the ladders). And I have to finish the base as well... still a lot of work to be done.

Thanks everyone!

I like that you've gone ramshackle but it doesn't look orkish.

I think the trick is using anything and everything, but in an orderly manner  :)

I finally glued everything to the board, except for the comms/lookout tower. I'm still hesitating on it, but I will probably leave it removable for transportation reasons.

Today I painted the base. It needs some wash and dry brushing with a lighter color. Then I can do the weathering on the outside of the walls. And after that I can add some small details like posters and other gubbins.
So still a few weeks worth of work left. Probably it will be done before BSSC  lol
