Title: BSC2023 has.been Abandoned place of 'Worship'
Post by: has.been on January 26, 2023, 07:59:29 AM
It will be a long abandoned place that obviously was built
for some form of worship. I am thinking of some bemused
archeologists of the distant future trying to work out what
form the worship took.
Yesterday my wife & I went to Banbury (UK) for a moochy
day out. There I saw a sign on a building that said, 'Digital
Archeology' and it started me thinking.
Not much planning yet though.

Bemused archaeologists: my colleagues when I chair a Board of Studies meeting. Want pics?  ;D
Good luck with this.

When I was still in infant school, yes that long ago, the class watched
(in glorious Black & White) an educational programme.
Archeologists from the far future were excavating a building from the 1960s.
They jumped to all the wrong conclusions. e.g. The remains of the family car
in the garage led them to think it was the family's 'god' in its shrine.
& the dinky toy found inside the house was a portable aid to praying.

My now-gone Great Aunt had a house built for her in the Karoo on her sheep ranch by my uncles - one an architect and one a surveyor. As this was in the middle of nowhere, they built it perfectly east-west so as to "screw with the archeologists who dug it up"

Oh that's quite funny. On the 'Recent' section on the left of the main page, it looks at first glance like it says...

"BSC2023 has been abandoned."

For a moment there I was thinking 'Oh, what has Hammers done now? Another sexual scandal?'

You read my mind Bob. That was my first thought. :D
Might change it though. I have a few more days of thinking.
If I made it an American Football ground, it would fit in with
my first Build Something entry, the abandoned Helter Skelter.
Title: Re: BSC2023 has.been Abandoned place of 'Worship'

First thought, as Flatpack cottoned onto, was a disused Fratton Park,
home to Pompey (Portsmouth FC) but that would lead to a lot of
micky taking & wouldn't fit in with anything I already have.
Still have the last two (BSC2021 & BSC2022) staring at me from
the shelves.
Second thought was an American (Grid iron) stadium, but those things
are HUGE !!!
Third thought, & I think I'll go with this one, is the long abandoned entrance
to a local (therefore smaller) sports field. This I can fit in with BSC2021 (Disused
Helter Skelter) for a Zombie/PA game. It also means I can make up a town
that it can be based in.

A cunning plan Baldric.

I have started searching the internet for ideas & there are a lot of variety out there.

So Goodison then?  Will be abandoned soon enough, already old and small, fans leave offerings/mementos at dixie deans statue.

I've been studying sports stadia entrances. Not interesting enough.
I believe I need more, so I'm thinking of also:-
Derelict section of bleachers, possibly with a broken scoreboard.
Goal post  (American toasting fork style), &
some damaged wall sections plus graffiti.

Now am I right in thinking I can have up to three bases?
Had a look but couldn't find any reference. I am hopeless with computers. ;D

How about a cricket pavilion? Potential for more interesting architecture than the average footie field. Not that anybody should consider Fratton Park to be in any way average. Many happy childhood holidays spent in Southsea!

I agree that Fratton Park  is not, in any way, average. :D
Cricket pavilion is a good idea, but if I make an American sports field
it can be used with other bits I have (e.g. two years ago & my entry for
build something comp. i.e. abandoned Helter Skelter)

First of all, sorry for not posting any in progress shots.
I will register my usual plea for mercy/understanding...Real life has been getting in the way.
Yesterday I almost withdrew from the competition, but sat down & took a few Smarties,
M&Ms for our friends across the Pond. I will get an entry finished.

Last night I hacked a lot of blue foam off-cuts & played around with placement. They were
glued into place & I went to bed a bit late.

Yeah, I know it looks s#!t, but I have loads of time yet. :D

A few more pictures, including the goal post. Late last night I was on the computer
trying to find a picture of one to confirm what they looked like. Much like an elephant,
you know it when you see it, but how to make one????

I keep telling myself it will get better.

This morning I corrected some bits & applied a LOT of filler (filler+sand+PVA glue+black paint)

After posting this, it is back to work. I want to glue some bits on tonight, so that
they are dry by tomorrow morning, then I should be able to paint on an undercoat.
Tomorrow afternoon painting, & in the evening flocking etc. That would still leave
a lot of Saturday free for emergencies.

What could possibly go wrong? :D

Weeeeeeel... the scoreboard came apart from its support!
High tech solution, some PVA glue & two elastic bands. Check on that later.

Pictures of extra bits added last night.
metal rods, exposed by the breaking of the re-enforced concrete,
some damaged bits of railings & 'decorations' on & at the foot of the Goal Post.
oh, & the name of the Stadia. The local City Hall were very reluctant to have it built.
They put every obstacle in its path. As a result of the bad feeling & restrictions placed
on it, the owners used the naming of it (something the officials had no control over)
to fight back.  Hense 'QQQQ'
 lol lol lol

This morning I got most of it undercoated. This was a very fiddly job.
I had been tempted to try a light primer spray with a rattle can, but...
a) Still a lot of foam exposed, & more important
b) It was pouring down this morning!!!

Pete,
This is probably the last hairdryer you used  lol lol
If it doesn’t dry your paint, just dry brush the hairdryer and submit it as a Victorian sci fi spaceship  lol lol

Bob you Cad! You promised you'd never publish that picture of me! :-[

Painting proceeding. Added a bit this morning before walking the dog.
Now all I have to do is:-
Dry brush 'dust', flock it, paint any metallic bits & do ...something with the score board.
do a detailed job on the goal post base, then If time allows I could add some graffiti &/or posters.

Simples! :D

The bit I am dreading is the photo. Trying to get it all into one picture & size it to send.
Ah well not too bad an effort for three days work.  Maybe next year I'll start when I should. ::)

Yeah, likewise - I thought it was a jungle temple in the competition picture.

It looks so much better in these pictures. 1000 pixels really wasn't enough to capture the detail in the pieces :(

Thanks you guys.
My cause was not helped by having to choose just one picture.
I have no idea how to even begin on a photo montage.
The very nice umpire even had to reduce it to the correct size for me.

Maybe next year I'll work backwards. What one photo would look fantastic?
Then build towards that. lol

In the meantime some more, not all, of the pictures.

I'm not sure what software you use, but there are a bunch of photo montage sites online

The first one that popped up (I've never used it, so no idea if it's any use) is https://www.canva.com/features/photomontage/

Well worth exploring, as ultimately it's fairly straightforward to do. Given the complexity you dealt with during your build, it shouldn't be a problem lol

lol lol lol. It is called a goal post or sometimes 'Toasting fork'.
As I didn't have anything suitable I cut up a coat hanger, poured boiling water over it
& bent it to the required shape. Dunking it into cold water to set it. Hope that helps.

Someday I will put on a Zombie game & get it all down, but for the moment, that is it.
