Ok, so I've had this idea for the longest of times, ever since I saw the concept on the web.
I'm going to make a ruined shrine or magic circle on a large slab of rock that is, wait for it... levitating.
Levitating through the laws of physics by means of a tensegrity construction. There'll be a rocky outcropping, with a larger piece of rock hovering next/over it, as if it was ripped out of the bedrock by mighty magical powers. The top of the rock will be mainly flat, with arcane symbols carved into it, with maybe some remains of a (temple?) building around it.
If my calculations will be right, there should be plenty of strength in the construction to support a bunch of miniatures on top, and it can be used as a sacred place or even as a portal to the underworld. Enough of an odd place to be worshipped, for sure...
Here's a picture of the framework construction underneath of the eyecandy, for those not familiar with the concept of tensegrity...

Best of luck to everyone participating; let's make it another great one!! 8)

I like the sound of that 8)
-
Very clever!
-
Ohhh, this will be very interesting :o
I was always curious how stable are these things.
-
I am looking forward to seeing this progress.
Good luck.
-
This is looking promising. Cant wait to see the start.
-
I like the concept, and look forward to this one.
-
Looks like magic to me already!
-
Ooh tensegrity! I've played with that, but not finished anything. Looking forward to seeing this built and report to see how it works.
-
A very novel idea mate - look forward to seeing the build :)
-
I am looking forward to this one.
-
Oh wow! This will be good.
-
I am looking forward to this one.
What he said.
-
Looks like you already have a strong substructure that puts you in the lead. lol

OK, just a message here to let everybody know I have not bowed out. I have been experimenting with different materials to create the framework of the contraption, but nothing has proven satisfactory so far.
I tried wooden dowels, but they're too bulky and unless I start doing actual woodworking techniques, the construction would remain too fragile, and adding metal bracers would add too much weight to my liking.
So I considered polystyrene rods. Which are light and can be welded. But the amount of foam I am expecting to add to the framework bends the material as it is not stiff enough.
But when I went to bed last night, I came up with the idea of going full metal on this one. \m/
I have a stash of (former) bicycle wheel spokes, which are tough as nails and can easily take the strain and weight (if they can support me, they can support a couple of lumps of foam) and the spokes can be bent into shape without losing their strength.
I will start working with the new material this weekend, and when the framework has been done, I expect progress to be quite fast.
So; regrettably no pictures yet, but it has been quiet on this front for too long, so I figured I'd give at least a small update.
More to follow soon :)

Meccano was what sprung to mind when I saw your original design, but I guess it might be too bulky.
Hopefully the spokes aren't too springy/snap when you bend them.
Looking forward to seeing how this turns out
-
Hopefully the spokes aren't too springy/snap when you bend them.
Bike spokes will bend a surprisingly long way before they snap. (source, have taco'd a few bike wheels in my time but only ever had spokes snap at the mounting points at each end where they're under maximum stress...)
Looking forward to this tensegrity setup come together!

Got the base construction done, but balancing the whole thing is proving kind of fiddly... ::)
Still; nothing to it but to plow on I guess.
The wire used is not the one I will use in the final product though. I am looking for the toughest, thinnest metal wire right now, because I got this completely idiotic notion that the carved magical circle I envisioned has to actually glow...
So there'll be LEDs under the stone work of the circle and the switch and powepack will be on the base: the power will run through the tethers. Let's hope it'll be feasible, as right now, I can't even seem to properly balance the bare framework :D
-
That will be well cool if you can get the balance right.
-
Sounds fiddly as...good luck!

Brill 8)
-
Good Luck, that sounds like a nightmare to get right, but if you pull it off it'll be legendary
-
Cheers guys.
Another spanner in the works.
Down for the count but not out!
-
Bugger!!!
Hope it doesn't hit you too hard.

That needs to be part of the build!

That needs to be part of the build!
That's EXACTLY what I was going to type. Hope it doesn't hit you too hard.

I think you should use that Covid Test in your build and show it who is boss often thought they would make good windows. Get well soon.
-
Not being ambitious at all, are we?
Here's hoping you'l pull it off, 'cause that'll look epic.
A bit worried I might get bug-zapped if you let the power for the lighting flow through the suspension wires?
You're not gonna isolate them and risk someone in a reflex slapping your enitre build across the room?
-
Well, I think it's time to admit that I'm not feeling this one at all.
I've not had any concrete hobby time for weeks, have been hit a bit hard by Flurona (a combination of the flu and COVID, if you're wondering about that) so I've generally been too busy, sick and tired to get anything done.
And now that it looks like I will finally get to spend some time doing fun stuff again, I think I'd rather spend that time on stuff I really feel like doing.
So I'm throwing in the towel. Again.
The tensegrity idea will percolate some more, but I do want to eventually make it work. Until that time, I will 'just' be painting more minis...
-
Sorry to hear it. The concept was spectacular.
-
Hope you feel better soon.
-
Sorry to hear that, but it's a good decision; doing something you actually have more fun doing will help the Futurona or whatever it is - I'd never heard that one before.
-
You'll be missed, it was such a clever idea. hope you get to enjoy your time. And vote when the time comes (especially if it's for a certain nordic temple)
