A chinese ancestral hall or small temple for use in my Back of Beyond games.
Pic to give an idea, but mine is intended to be simpler and smaller:

Traditional scratch-build in a mix of materials.
Roof is probably the biggest challenge of the build, but I have a cunning plan...
Hopefully this will encourage me to complete my other chinese buildings (from Oshiro), sat unfinished in a box for the past few years ::)
-
Especially the roof seems pretty ambitious, but very cool; curious to see where you'll take this :)
-
Yeah, get them buildings finished lol
-
Good luck with this.
-
Will be watching this one.

Will be watching this one.
Ditto - very ambitious. 8)
-
This ought to be good 8) 8)

I am really looking forward to this build. I am interested how you will address the roof.
-
Look forward to this one…could be another masterclass in the maeking
;)
-
Thanks all for the encouragement. :)
Yeah, get them buildings finished lol
I know.... ::)
I've made plans for what I have in mind, which I don't often do. The complex roof means I need to have a better idea what I'm doing early on. Subject to change and adjustment as I go along. (already I may lower the wall height a bit)

First part to build will be the base; Mostly foamed PVC for strength and so I can emboss a tiled floor.
-
Nice practical looking plan that looks like it can be built within the confines of the contest. Good luck!
-
Grand! :o
-
This looks very interesting - I shall follow with interest. ;)

Thanks all for the encouragement. :)

I always enjoy your builds Paul and this is certainly the most ‘planning’ I remember (did even the 007 set have such a well drawn plan?)
-
I am looking forward for this building process especially the roof looks very interesting.

After a rather belated start I have now made some progress.

Thanks Steve. Yes, for the most part I tend to "see buildings" in my head and then modify them as I need during construction. The unusual roof on this build, plus the regularly tiled floor meant I had to do some 'proper' plans.

The top is 2mm foamed PVC (Palight/Foamex) and the base 3mm.
I have returned to my old fetish of engraving into the surface by hand. :D
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/58/369-070323203044-58295230.jpeg)
To raise the top surface I've used more 3mm foam PVC (at 90' to the top & bottom) engraved with a simple block pattern. Doing this, with a small amount of reinforcement, means the weight is kept down but it remains strong. Foam PVC glues well with superglue. Be warned: it adheres almost instantly with a very strong bond!

Miniature included to give an idea of size.
Next will be the walls.

Superb!
-
Looking good :)
-
Now this is looking well cool.
Yes, for the most part I tend to "see buildings" in my head and then modify them as I need during construction.
+1 on this one. I plan too much it tends to ruin it.
-
That’s a solid start 8)

Me too. I REALLY MUST get started though. :?

If what gets built on that base matches it you will have a superb build. Curious to see how you achieve your roof, even if simplified it will be a challenge. There is another thread here on LAF where someone is building just such a style roof (don't remember exactly where, heck, might even be a thread by you!).
-
A solid foundation to things to come.
-
That looks rather splendid! :o
-
I like the proportions, the "thickness" just looks right to my eyes.
-
nice start
-
Thanks all :)
Running way behind with this (distracted by an unforseen project..)
I've built the walls in several different sections, but they have yet to be glued together and to the base. This was to aid adjustment and painting.

Construction is all plastic card with round rod and half rod (back wall) for the pillars. 5mm foam PVC for the end walls.

Got the (difficult) roof to do with time running out.. ::)
-
Lovely work 8)
-
Coming along nicely 8)
-
Very impressive. I can't wait to see with the roof.
-
Looks cracking so far!
-
Superb, this look looks splendid already. 8)

Looks great so far, looking forward to the roof.

Very nice! I am looking forward to how you address the complex roof.

Fiddling with the roof....
The lower roof level was built from more 2/3mm foamed PVC
For the tiling I am cheating and using corderoy!
I dont have any suitable embossed plastic card and it would be complex to shape and fit on this roof.
I have used corderoy before for mediteranean tiled roofing, following the idea of Gary Chalk for his pirate buldings in an old Wargames Illustrated.
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/58/369-120423170536-58661112.jpeg) (http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/58/369-120423170536-586602494.jpeg)
The corderoy was glued to thin card with PVA. This would give it some rigidity and flexibilty, to enable it to be shaped/curved.
Pieces were then cut to apporximate size and the edges sealed with superglue (the white staining) to add strength (A technique I have used before, borrowed from Silent Invader & Tin Shed Gamer)
After lots of measuring, adjusting, measuring, cutting, sanding & glueing I had the lower level complete.
The ridgelines and support for the upper roof are more 2mm foamed PVC.
Level one complete!

-
Now that is a creative solution. Very cool.
-
Cracking idea and execution, looks great.
-
Looking great.
-
Your builds are always brill 8)
-
Excellent, and I learned a new technique! :-* :-* I would never have thought to use fabric.
-
Looking forward to seeing this in its final form. Had forgotten about the corduroy technique that Mr. Chalk used - but definitely recall his pirate town.
-
Such a clever use of cords! It's looking great Paul! Can't wait to see it completed!
-
Thanks for the feedback. :D
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/58/369-120423170646-58666291.jpeg) (http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/58/369-120423170646-586651183.jpeg)
Main structure of the upper level; again from 2mm foamed PVC. 4 pieces of tiling, the last one cut roughly to size.
The discolouration on the cardboard side is from the dried superglue, ready for trimming and sanding to size.
The completed upper roof, with ridgeline and triangular insert at each gable (again foamed PVC)
Both roof levels complete. The corderoy will get a thin coating of Mod Podge to seal it and add a bit more strenth.
-
Superb!
-
Love the roof, looks awesome.
-
The roof looks great, can't wait to see it finished.

Me too.

The roof construction is very good - well done :-*
-
I've submitted my entry now. ::)
Both completed roof levels:

Building & roof levels:
Both roof levels will be lift-off on the finished model; for ease of access for miniatures and easier storage.
Finished building (pre-paint):
I've just noticed I didn't seat the roof correctly for the pic. It does sit flush normally!
Rear of building:

Good luck to everyone else that has entered. :)
