Had lots of ideas, none of which were that interesting. I have been watching vikings valhalla so I settled on making uppsala for the build. It won't be an entire village but focus on the temple, altar, totems, maybe a few other small things.
Again my goal is to make it past the first round. There's some really good ideas and creative folks participating so I'll have have step it up.
-
Good luck. I too would like to get passed the first round.
Ain't managed it yet. lol lol lol
-
Just started watching Valhalla - looking forward to seeing your build :)
-
Great idea - I haven't watched this yet, so no spoilers, please! 8)
-
Will be interesting to see what you come up with.
-
I remember the episode in the original series where they all went there. A very mysterious and evocative place. Should make for an interesting build!
Best of luck! :)
-
I thought about building this but one more true to the historical as opposed to the one in the Vikings series, this may help you see: http://www.illustratedcuriosity.com/history/history-postclassical-era/viking-paganism-as-chronicled-by-adam-of-bremen/

@golgotha thanks for the link. I'm still in the research phase so it'll be a help.

Oooh, this is going to be a good'n!
-
An interesting shaped building - should be a good build.
-
Also; the original was in a relatively flat area, if I recall correctly, and not on a rocky peak, as in the series.
It did look a lot more dramatic that way though ;)
-
Even though it hasn't started, i think sketches, plans are ok to post. If not I'll remove this. Here's my rough design

First step is roofs. Lots of mistakes trying to get the low pitch angles but finally got it. Maths is hard!

Next is middle roof with high pitch. Expect more mistakes too.

I feel your pain......

Worked on the second level of roofing

Want to do the shingles in a diamond or dragon scale pattern but hate measuring. I found some strips from shifting lands (https://shop.shiftinglands.com/roof-tiles/193-423-card-board-shingles-dragon-scale.html#/roof_tiles-200x15x1mm) which would have been great but shipping to the usa was too much. Was at Michael's getting more foamcore (they're out of big sheets) and found these metal flower labels. I taped them together to make a little jig. Did I mention i hate measuring.

So a few traces and a few cuts on cardboard as testers.

Pretty happy with it but now I have to do a lot more.
-
Wow! Now that is dedication right there! :)
-
Looking forward to this
Cheers

That's working neatly! I like that idea. 8)
-
Nice way to make a template.
-
That's clever! Measure once and you have the tool for as many times as you need it!!
Those diamond shingles look great... :-*

Slow progress. I have a lot of shingles to cut out. Based on initial measurements probably at least 50 12" strips. If I did it again, I'd probably have them be 1 1/4" instead of 1" wide so it would be the width of the ruler and be one less measurement each (did I mention i hate measuring).
While I'm working on the strips, figured I'd do some 3d prints on details beginning with torches. Not sure of the rules about 3d prints so please forgive me if this is wrong. Found a file on thingverse (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4660098/files) but used only the wall ones.

A couple test runs and the size was a bit small so i scaled it up a bit. Now running job is 24min on prusa mini

Again slow going, but going

The torches look very good!
-
very nice indeed

Lots of roofing still underway but while waiting for glue to dry, i put together the main building structure
(https://i.imgur.com/XD7Z5dK.jpg)
6inx8inx14in foamcore. A little unsure the middle roof tier might overlap the lower more than i planned which might mean more roofing if I have to redo it.
I'm also having alignment issues with the 3d printer so might have to rethink the torches.
-
Sorry for the delay in posts but there's so many roof shingles to cut i fear i may never finish. Not a fan of repeating things. But while waiting for some glue to dry, thought I'd at least layout the top roof peak. I got a couple of gable ends from 4ground for some details and using them to mark out where to cut the roofing lines.
Not sure I'm ready to make the cuts just yet but at least they're in place for me to make some judgments on all the roof placement. Because the gable is from 2 different kits, they don't quite line up so I'll have to figure out a way to glue them together before attaching.
I also got a texture roller from etsy to do wood planking on the building but it doesn't work too well on foam core, xps foam it's ok but that's not helpful for this project unless i can think of something.
-
That looks good, hope you resolve your wood pattern problems. All I can think of are a green stuff layer, which might have problems adhering to the foam, or using matchsticks! Fiddlier than ever, and probably not easy to get the right appearance.
-
Now the gables will be a nice touch. Can't wait to see more.
-
Finally got the lower roof shinlges cut and glued. While they're drying glued the gables together, cut top roof line and rough fit it.

I don't think I'll have time to do the diamond pattern on the upper roof so that will just be strips once it's in place. With the gables it's a bit fiddly so I'm still working it out. Slow going but not out.
-
Holy crap 2 days!
Completing top shingles had to be quick. Width of ruler, just straight cuts, marked half way, lay out on tape, then glued to roof.

No fancy but will do. Now the fiddlely bits attaching lower roofs. Timing will be tight.
-
Looking good that is going to be a cracking piece...
-
Good luck for the next few days. :)
-
With some hot glue i was able to fit all the roof sections together.

Not very sturdy for gaming but it's at least looking like I envisioned it. Final step is a base out of xps foam and a couple of details (not as many as i wanted but time is running out). Wife says this is like pulling all nighters in college.
-
Just wow. Those shingles were a boatload of work. :o
-
Final details - gables, wolf heads, and couple of crows. Not as much as I wanted (posts proving too fiddly, and base wasn't looking good) but enough for me call it done.

Tomorrow is all speed painting in order to submit. Not sure how much of a tableau I'll be able to present but it should hopefully give the impression of a place of worship.
-
Good luck.
-
That’s looking great :o 8)
-
The model looks very good - well done :-*
-
Looks amazing!
-
Entry submitted. Didn't have time to make composite pic, but if I make it past first round I will
-
Didn't have time to make composite pic,
I have absolutely no idea how to do a composite picture.
Next time I'll make something with only a front, that way I won't
worry about what view to include in my one photo.
lol lol lol
