Not a fan of the rules, but can't help but be very impressed
with your collection of Sci-Fi figures & vehicles.
-
Yes, that’s a pretty amazing body of work you have put together!

Some great stuff there!
Would love to see more of the battles

Thanks, guys!
Here are some more battle pics, the first one from that big battle.

Also a skirmish game (I just call it 40k parsecs from home, basically 5parsecs but with 40k fight system)

That guy lost his morale and fled. Having no other way to do this on this terrain piece, he must have flushed himself on the toilet.

So you just use 40k states and rules for the guys in your 40k parsecs game? Or like say the necromunda rules?
-
So you just use 40k states and rules for the guys in your 40k parsecs game? Or like say the necromunda rules?
Basically yes. In my solo gaming I usually stick with one set for stats and basic combat system, for scifi its 40k. Most of my scifi collection is for 40k, or at least using 40k weapons (the second biggest is Necromunda, which can be 40k-ized pretty easily), and when I have, lets say, a perfectly wyswyg Plague Marine, it does not make any sense to run it as “Bulky A_hole Type3” instead of using its perfectly fine 40k stats and rules which I am already familiar with. They say a good solo system is easy to learn- nothing is easier to learn than something I already know :)
I like 40k very much- the world, the models, and yes, since they phased out the consolidate into CC in 5th ed, I never had any big issue with its basic rules neither. It has its flaws, I know, mostly because of codex creep (and the other manifestations of GeeDub greed). But these are really easy to balance out in solo gaming. (In versus gaming I do not have the luxury to choose game system, I play what the others play :) ) From then on it is an almost endless toybox, models and stats for everything from big stompy robots to cultist lowlifes. And bitz, lots of bitz.
So for stats and basic combat mechanics it is 40k, for activation and campaign it is 5Parsecs. It needs some cleaning on the edges, for example I made charge distance into 1d6” and because of the activation system, everyone is allowed one set of strike back in CC per turn instead of a dedicated CC phase. For the weapons I use the closest 40k counterpart, for the enemies I do not roll on the table but I made cards with all my eligible models (I have some Necro gangs, nids, some chaos, some necrons, now working on some Tau, so quite a card deck), and I just take one from that. Sometimes two for a mixed gang or when I get a character (for example Tau Ethereal), I look for the closest fitting unit card (Fire Warriors, drones or Kroot, whichever comes first). Things like tactics and whether something is an invasion threat, are usually pretty straightforward given the backstory of the faction.
...also some servitors finished recently.

Thank you!
Thing is, factions have a colour code. For the Imperium, the armour color is Panzer Grey, the subfactions have different clothes colour: pike grey for soldiers and gangs (they just make the biggest part of my collection), red for AdMech, white for Ecclesiarchy and Inquisition, purple for Rogue Traders, and Administratum crew will be turqoise. For Chaos, the clothes colour is set (dark yellow), the armour colour is depending on the god served: Field Grey for Nurgle, blue for Tzeench, pink for Slaanesh, you can guess the one for Khorne, but I do not have any models serving him yet, my Chaos models have the Nurgle scheme.

Administratum clerks, the two on the sides are my old sculpts (using Delaque heads), the one in the middle is a 3d printed figure from I do not remember where.

Great new additions, some lovely sculpts. The Delaque heads are a good fit.
I particularly like the little votive box on the back of the smaller scroll-carrying guy on the right!

Those dudes look great!

Thanks, guys! For the icons I made this little tutorial earlier, it is easy to paint (key is the order of colours) and looks really cool either on cultist type figures also on historical models.
Gothic icon:

I love the personality of your Guardsmen and forces in general! Those helmets are distinctive and cool on the IG in particular. Great use of different models and schemes throughout.

Thank you! Yes, this is a design rule, every Guardsman shall have helmet and pauldrons modelled after the 3rd ed metal Cadians (my favourite GW range ever), also a bayonet on his lasgun. This way I can use whatever figures, they will come together as an unified looking army. These down there were made of Vraks traitors for example. (The two medics in the opening comment do not wear any helmet because they are concripted civilians in a campaign).

-
I'm a big fan of the 3rd ed Cadians too - best Guard GW ever did.
Your sculpting is a solid method for forcing unity. Whilst I recognise the Vraks figures, they fit really well with the rest of the troops too, which is a challenge for traitor figures. Nice work!

Thank you! With this simple trick you can basically make anyone into the Guard, this, for example, is my Sly Marbo, a Confrontation Kelt drummer (I won it on a competition back when Rackham was a thing), so originally pretty far from a scifi soldier :)

Again, would not have recognised at all his fantasy origins. I'm a huge fan of having an eclectic group of unique models, especially with that kind of unification. Great work!

Thank you! His demo charge was originally a drum, he is the guy on the left on this picture. I really like to keep some of the original character of these figures, if I wanted to completely cbver them in GS I would not need a base figure in the first place.

I really like kitbashing, and I also used a lot of Marine parts, compared to the IG parts, there was always a good variety in these and most of them is OK for IG, especially in the minimarine era. With the Primaris you have to be more careful since they are bigger, but most classical marine torsos were a perfect fit for Guard if you trimmed the sides a little bit (marines were taller, but even the old ones a lot bulkier). Like this comissar. The yellow parts are my sculpts cast in resin.

Lovely stuff! Loads of character and loads of fun. The evil midget is my favourite.
It's very satisfying finding a broad setting you like and then colouring it in with your own ideas leading to different warbands/factions, isn't it?

Thanks! He was originally the banner pole gretchin from the GW ogre warrior box.

My thinking about that is a little bit different than most peoples. Character creation for me is more about aesthetics and game effects rather than the RPG-like approach, most of my protagonists in the 40kParsecs campaign do not even have a name.
As for creating the setting, I never liked the "background canvas" style. I grew up on Busy World of Richard Scarry-books and on Lego City, when seeing a setting I always ask questions like what the people here do for a living, what do they create, build, how they get the raw materials for that, how they get to their workplaces, etc etc- how the society and economics work. Might sound funny first, but answering these questions come with a plethora of unique ideas, thats why I made the Administratum guys for example. And also that is what I really like in Nu-Necromunda making the gangs into specialists of certain industrial areas and introducing all those non-gang factions. And if you have a working world, that will create its own stories and characters.
This is all about personal taske of course, I also enjoy a good rpg-style background story, especially when it is written with some sense of humour.
I also have some unarmed Imperial citizens too.

Ace painting on your models! :o
-
How awesome to have a selection of such civilians!
I have nearly two companies of guard infantry that has slowly assimilated abandoned side projects and random minor squads and I agree regarding background building- at this point I have a good idea of what their homework’s and some belief systems might be like, right down to certain effigies and local customs o_o o_o lol
Any chance of you posting up a quick tutorial on how you sculpt your helmets?
-
Thank you guys!
How awesome to have a selection of such civilians!
They are mostly made of spare soldiers parts, Cadian kits and also my sculpts cast in resin. They were made to be a quick "faceless mob" rather than individuals, 10 men, 10 women and 5 children, I just sculpted some quick details like the woman holding the baby, some also got tools or bags they carry. Then I added some 1/48 aircraft crew too.
Any chance of you posting up a quick tutorial on how you sculpt your helmets?
I have no photos, but I can give a quick description:
1.) take a suitable blob of green stuff. This is the hardest part, finding the thin line between "goomba" and "beanie hat on a pumpkin" needs experience, also depends on the base figure
2.) Put it onto the head and form a nice half orb (like if the figure were wearing an M1 or similar simple shaped helmet)
3.) raise the part above the eyes a little bit (now it looks like a Stahlhelm)
4.) carefully push in a circle around the top, separating the top from the brim. In this stage you can remove the too much GS by pushing it towards the rear part
5.) push two horizontal lines towards the temple from the front, this way making the front part of the headset ear pieces.
6.) form the forehead part of the brim by carefully pushing it up from down and making the lower and upper part parallel
7.) form the details of the back part of the rim- just some vertical lines.
...and now something different: my Tau just finished. I have some Tau figures from here and there, they will make a nice enemy faction in the skirmish games (a couple more cards in the "enemies" card pile). I wanted them to be different from the Imperials ofc, so they got bright white armour with some weathering (weathering with oil paint into the panel lines is a nice technique I originally used for aircraft, it is good because it keeps the base colour really well in opposite for the traditional wash technique). Also they got jungle bases with swamp water and lots of foliage.

Thanks! Artist oil has a really long drying time, so it is really easily controlable, you can just wash back from the places it does not belong. This makes it ideal for this kind of work. Also white is a good base for weathering, everything is clearly visible on it.

Nah, from these pics only the servitors, the Administratum clerks and the tau are new, even for those most of the work was done during the Christmas holiday.

Thanks! It is worth to check out this manufacturer, they have some really cool stuff.
The flesh is: Cadian Fleshtone base, Druchii Violet wash and a light, pale blue highlight where the secret is to stop just before the surface is getting explicitly blue.

This one is for 40k parsecs, 3d print of someone, I bought it on the monthly bitz market of the local club. Originally had a sniper rifle, but that broke, and these 3d sculpts are hell to drill, I rather sculpted a new arm, this time with a plasma pistol.
I call her Lolo after the famous Lolo Ferrari, yeah, I also grew up on Baywatch, but man, those are a little bit on the grotesque side. +1 Armour from the front.

They look fantastic, especially as a group! Your oil technique for outlining looks really good. Do you have any further T'au plans, or do you think the group is finished?

Thank you!
Plans depend on the time frame discussed :) For now they are OK, a characteristic opponent force in small skirmishes, I might add some impulse buy/impulse sculpt characters.
On medium term
-I have some half painted Kroots, I will finish them sometimes.
-I will add some human traitors. No need to invent warm water here, samurai-themed scifi figures will make nice Tau-aligned humans with the proper paintjob. Far East is a popular topic in scifi miniature making too and they are hard to squeeze into the “medieval Europe gone mad” design of the Imperium anyways. I already have some fitting Urban Mammoth figures.
On long term
-I would like to make Tau an umbrella faction for random weird alien species who do not form a faction on their own and not aligned to an existing one
-Maybe some more regular Tau, I can get a bargain offer of figures any time :) (These above also came from one of those)
-
Those are nice and sharp. Well done

And now some Imperium: hunting dogs and their handlers. A Konflikt 47 British war dog set, I just changed the handlers a little bit, and added some more dogs from Volsung (the basset hounds) and Eden (the ones with the scarf).

They look great! Love the outfits on those handlers - they're well suited for managing the hounds. They remind me of the big training suits police forces use when teaching their dogs to savage people. Your colour scheme comes out great on those two in particular - they call to mind the City 17 civil protection guys from the Half Life games, which can only be a good thing.

Thank you! As I wrote, they are from a Konflikt 47 set, the handlers basically just got a head swap, a holstered autopistol and a pauldron. I liked them basically exactly for that dog trainer suit, I decided to keep them for the dogs. (They originally had Brodie helmets)

I have a hunter guy in the Rogue trader retinue shown on the first page, these dogs were originally intended to be his hunting dogs. Well, they still could be, I might need a more hunter-y looking handler.

Wow, I had honestly assumed that they were just stock - that's a seamless change. Nice job, as always! As you say, I think the tougher looking dogs suit the rough-looking handlers a little better than the aristocrat type.
-
What heads are those on the handlers? They really do look rather Combine-esque.
Love efforts and this latest geezer looks awesome!

The dogs from the Eden range have peg legs, maybe not obvious on the pictures, yes, those are not the aristorcratic hunting types :)

Both heads are my sculpts, I casted them in several pieces, handy both for Vraks-like Chaos milita figures and conversions like these two. The right one on the unpainted picture is based on the Hungarian Army 70M gas mask, yes, it is a lot like the Combine troops in Hal Life. The real colour is also this light grey mask with the green filter, I kept it as I have enough dark coloured bitz on my models without painting gasmasks rubber black too.
Love efforts and this latest geezer looks awesome!
Thanks! He is an older model of mine, I just did not have any pics of him here. Here is an unpaited picture showing what the conversion is made of:
And now something completely new: a Predator. A delicate resin mini of an unknown manufacturer, he is originally scuba diving, but I painted him that way that it can be an underwater scene and also simply jumping around in a forest.

40k civilians also need some vehicle to go to work their 16hrs shifts in the tank factory, and sometimes the passenger capacity of a Chimaera is just not enough.
So I made them this bus, a Russian-made diecast model of an old Soviet PAZ-672 bus, but has a really cool retro style. I added a driver and some weathering. Lots of weathering.

Good idea :)

Thanks, guys! Pro tip for weathering diecast vehicles: start with a coat of Purity Seal spray (mask the windows), it will make the paint matte (=worn looking) instead of that glossy shine they come with.

Some small army updates. Soldier with command radio- the soldier is my sculpt (used it for conscripts), the radio is a mix of cadian one and some plasticard.

Man, smart idea with the backpacks! Love the plasma glow too.
Thanks! For the squads, I like to keep them a stable group, i started the backpack thing when I had to add flamers to a lasgun-only group. I just magnetized the back of one of the figures and added the flamer backpack. An extra lasgun on a spec weapon guy usually does not spark extra wyswyg debates.
The plasma glow was made with artist oil blue. Much glowier than GW washes.

Great! I particularly like this sniper, he's very inspirational to me. :)

Man, do you fancy sharing any tips on how you sculpt folds? They look really natural.
I like him a lot. His helmet and robes remind me of the chitin armour in Morrowind - no idea if you played, but the aesthetic for that game was fantastic, so it's a compliment ;)
He sounds like a monster from the wee blurb - hopefully someone else can put him down and take his cool gear.
EDIT:
Oops, new page. Here's a quote so folks can still see your last post.

Thank you, guys!
Man, do you fancy sharing any tips on how you sculpt folds? They look really natural.
I do not have the One And Only Magical Trick, I just use a lot of sculpting tools from various sizes of rubber shaped ones down to simple needles. The finer the material the smaller the folds- this desert robe is more on the rough side. For these kind of heavy robes it makes sense to take folding into account at the very beginning of sculpting, when you are just adding the mass of material. And always check references when needed, most of the people are wearing clothes novadays, so it is not hard to find a proper one :)
His helmet and robes remind me of the chitin armour in Morrowind - no idea if you played, but the aesthetic for that game was fantastic, so it's a compliment ;)
I played Morrowind, but I always used Imperial gear :) This one was inspired more of the Borderlands games where most inhabitants are wearing weird helmets and masks.
-
This team I will use as a plasma gun stormtrooper command squad as I need one for the army, but they can just as well serve as random bandits in skirmish games. I just went through the bitzbox and built them with all kinda random stuff. Ok, the guy on the left is my sculpt with a Necromunda Orlock head and a marine plasma gun.

They'd be *great* bandits - they give a very Mad Max / Fallout raiders kind of impression.
Some nice skin tones on the lady with the Mohawk, in particular!

Some nice skin tones on the lady with the Mohawk, in particular!
Thanks4 She is from an EDEN kit, she got a Chaos plasma pistol as the muzzle of her gun to make it a plasma gun.
The skin tones of women is alwas made with artist oil, its smoother blending fits the job better, the classic drybrushing can ruin a female face very quick as strong/sharp contrasts will make it look male.

This flyer is from Miniature Scenery, MDF kit built straight out of the box. I did not want it to be aliged any of my 40k factions, it became this unaligned harsh green with white stripes, this way it is able to serve most of the factions as a merc.

Latest updates looking so dang good once again!

Man, I'm not usually a big fan of MDF kits, but you've made that look beautiful - I would never have guessed.
God damn it, I'm trying not to buy anything new for a while but you are making it hard lol

I prefer clear windows on models, but cutting this one up would have been too much work.
Man, I'm not usually a big fan of MDF kits, but you've made that look beautiful - I would never have guessed.
My biggest problem with MDF is that it is too cheap for its volume, a lot of stuff I'd buy but no place to store them :) This flyer has a bigger brother too, I chose the smaller one and it is still quite big.

Peasants for 40k, as not everyone lives in an industrial hive city. These 3 are very old conversions but I wanted to paint them finally. Mostly GSC and Empire Militia bitz, the pitchforks are my creations of wire and toothpicks leftover from an older project.

Two Mancubi from the Doom boardgame, they are neat Chaos monsters as they are, I only corrected some casting errors. They came in two different colours (green and red plastic), so I decided to paint their skin tones differently.

Oooh, dem's nice.
Thanks! They are really simple sculpts by wargame standards, this made the painting on one hand really simple, on the other hand sometimes I had to think where this detail ends and that detail begins. Artist oil is a really great amterial for these kinda big skin surfaces.

Moon Base Klasius ruins (GW plastic set). A nice one, but to do properly it needs a little bit more painting effort than the average terrain piece.

Man, I've missed a few!
Love the creepy Doom fellas - I can see how their whole machine / flesh melding vibe would be difficult with some more basic sculpts. You've done a bang-up job though. The oils really sell the uncomfortable 'diseased flesh' feel to them.
I like the darker skintone on the servitor - sounds crazy to say, but I think that might be the first non-white servitor I've seen painted? Nice to see some inclusivity in the inhuman Imperial punishments lol
Lovely rust effects on the GW ruins. They look more utilitarian and widely usable than most GW terrain. There are only so many gothic skull cyber churches you can fit in most game boards! The off-white is a solid colour choice to really show up the corrosion.
Cheers again for posting - your stuff is always inspiring.
-
I've just seen this project log and wanted to say that it's truly inspirational! Great paint jobs, neat conversions and a preponderance of infantry - all get ticks from me.
Since you're a fan of Imperial Guard and alternative system mins, have you ever heard of the old Warzone game from the Mutant Chronicles game? They had a bunch of figures from that which'd be ideal for Guard armies. The game system itself is also very fun, with alternating activation and a not crazy model count (about 20-50 models).

Thank you guys!

I really like to paint with oil, has a certain brighness acryl lacks and it is easier to mix (on a figure and on a palette too) since it has a much longer drying time. Ideal for these weird mixed unclean colours like Chaos flesh bitz.

I do not want to disappint you, he was not intended to be a servitorized POC, I painted with my standard rotten flesh scheme (Cadian Fleshtone+purple ink+light flesh-light blue mix drybrush), maybe the pic is a bit darked or I overdid the ink.

Yes, white+corrosion is a good combo (see my Tau on the previous pages), but I usually paint internal spaces white, it is more lifelike (ever been in a room with dark grey walls? :) ) and makes the models stand out better. I usally add a blue line to the lower spaces, but in this case I skipped it, the piece is busy enough without it.

Dunno why, but to me Imperial Guard was always the mass infantry army, not the tank parking lot some people make it into.

I know Mutant Chronicles, but I never played it. When I started 40k (end of 3rd ed) it was already a thing of the past, and no one really played it around here. And, to be honest, most of the sculpts are too goofy for my taste. I own some models, these plastics were converted into Guardsmen, and I also have some of the newer resin sculpts from its miscarriaged renaissance 5-10 years ago, for those I am still thinking what to convert them into.

Old (started 15+ years ago) Zoanthrope sculpt of mine, now got some paint, it can be considered as a paint tester as I plan to shake up my nids a little bit. The classic red-yellow colour scheme, but now I did the red with artist oil, I like how bright it turned to be.

Thank you! I really think that people temd to exaggregate the role of manufacturer styles and exact figure sizes, as long as they are roughly the same size, painting style and proper basing can really bring together figures from a wide array of manufacturers and sculpting styles. (Where it really matters is conversions.)
Don't worry, more to come :)

those two old school models are nostalgia fuel for sure
When I decided to paint the Plague Marines, I went through my Chaos-themed bitz to look for more- they both were bought second hand, and neither of them had backpacks, I had to add that. Otherwise they mix well with the new editions, uniform painting and basing ties them together really well.

Lovely use of seeds (?) for basing too!
Yes, they are white birch seeds, I collected them when I parked my car under such tree :) Now I purposefully harvest it from the white birch trees around here, this is the perfect time of the year to do it you just have to avoid rainy weather and harvest them when they are dry. They make cool autumn leaves- I like to base my Chaos models for an autumn forest, more specifically for a sickly autumn forest, Felwood area from World of Warcraft gave me the idea.

One of my friend got a laser cutting machine, so now I am getting more and more into designing MDF kits. So far mostly movement trays and various bases, but I started to move more into the direction of more serious kits. Now I designed these houses, and made 6 of them. They are to replace my old sci-fi/postapo huts made out of butter boxes, and they also serve as figure holders too. My biggest issue with terrain is the storage space, so one has to make compromises. They were designed to fit both my 28mm and 1/35 gaming.

Thank you! Yes, sadly, one has to make compromises, but using them for storage seems like a good one.
I am also renovating some of my old models. A mortar squad and three Rough Rider squads got, well, newly flocked bases, damage repair, in case of the riders new heads, decals, and some additional drybrush to look better.

The riders are converted, two squads on Empire Outrider horses, the last one on Breton knight horses. Sadly they are very fragile and I never found a good solution for storage (+they saw a lot of battles), so there was a lot to repair. I also plan to round them up to three full squads of 10 men (now there are 23 of them).

Thanks! I also missed the kickstarter, but now it is available in retail, at least the basic box. I hope that the rest will also come.

There is also a skag-themed expansion for this, it might be available soon.

I really like the Chaos Space Marines. Great muted colours, yet enough contrast to make them pop.

Nothing special, I primed them with Citadel Chaos Black spray, and then came the regular layers. Their plastic is softer than for example GWs, but not the rubber type of some 1/72 figures.

I made a friend for the sniper from page4. This one was a 3d sculpt of a Skitari, but it did not fit into my AdMech army so I made him into a sniper: removed the AdMech iconography and painted to mach my previous sniper. Desert caravans beware, now there are two of them.

Thanks, that is a great idea. Also them appearing randomly during battles with a third party as they are paid to hunt the prey down and they strike when its attention is divided. (For example certain rivals in 40k Parsecs send them after you)

You might have to include some restrictions. I know of a few Wargamers who would Nuke the planet
from orbit then claim, 'Yup we got the target'. lol lol lol
Perhaps something like 100pts for getting the target, but lose 50pts for any 'Collateral' hits.

As I play these types of games solo, I do ot have to worry about the unrestricted bloodlust of the opponent, going for the target will just serve fine :)
...meanwhile I made new bases for these old 1/48 AMT Tie Fighters of mine, soon I will also play dogfights with them.

Thanks! I have a lot of comissars, but I always find some inspiration to make yet another.

Lovely again Fred! Man I love the TIE fighter as a design! What are those wee slottabases on top of the larger ones? Weight?

Thank you!
The extra infantry bases are for the crew when they disembark- at this point more of a modeling tradition of mine as not every vehicle in my collection has easily removeable crew (in case of disembarking easier to use other infantry figures). I always include them on the photos, they help to show the scale.

Two bikers for the Gaslands40k project. The smaller one is a 3D design of someone with a simple conversion, the bigger one is a Wargame Scenery mdf kit with a driver added.
