Title: Invasion of the Astro Ants
Post by: mikos khan on January 30, 2023, 06:33:25 PM
Here are a few pics of our latest epic - "The Invasion of the Astro Ants" (available at finer garage sales everywhere).  The scenario was that the University of Davis Nutrition Department had recently found an alien ant egg and were experimenting on how to make it into an omelette and the alien ants sent a force to get it back.  The game began with the well armed alien bug men (mainly Selenites and Federation Armory Dreenoi, Xenomorphs and Octopoids) attacking the research station from both ends of the table.  They were opposed by an ecletic force of regular 1930's era infantry, rocket troops, weird WW2 power armored infantry, a WW2 walker and a few superheroes.  The Selenites came in first and were quickly met by a force of SMUD shock troopers and one of the superheroes (Breitbart the Brave).  The aliens seriously outgunned the SMUD troopers and routed them pretty quickly but they then encountered Breitbart who destroyed one of their units in an epic melee.  Unfortunately, for Breitbart he was zapped by a nearby Selenite unit armed with lightning guns and taken out of the game (but he'll be back for the sequel).  While this was occurring the other alien force was positioning itself for a close assault while their centipede robot engaged the armored rocket troopers and the tank walker.  After a multi turn battle the centipede robot (after suffering severe damage) finally drove off the tank walker and began to melee with the rocket troops since all of it's other weapons had been disabled.  While the war machines were battling it out the Xenomorphs (supported by the Dreenoi and Octopoids)  charged the infantry guarding the egg cooker and after a vicious firefight were finally repulsed.   Meanwhile on the other side of the table the  Selenites advanced and after routing a couple of units of infantry were engaged by a unit of rocketeers and Captain America.  This broke their momentum and they began to fall back (but not before killing Bucky - again).  It was a very fun (and close) and game.  Photos below.

That's awesome! Did you mention what rules you were using? The game looks like it had to be a blast...

Was this a Friday night Great Escape event or some other venue?  Or maybe a solo game?

"Is this going to be a Stand-Up fight sir, or another bug hunt?"

It's both!

The game looks really good!    I dig the Selenites, I'm glad someone makes them.   They had a good outing.   I think the xenomorphs were from leading edge games.

and remember.....

Sprayed tea on my keyboard when I read that.

The rules are based upon "The Men Who Would Be King."  We made a 1930's version, that we used to play a second American Civil war campaign.  See the Interwar forum for the ACW 2 New Sacramento Campaign.

We then Riveted on the Weird war rules, with Superheroes.  I have attached the latest version.  Someday they may be ready for Prime time.

These games are well reported playtests of the rules.  They will continue, virus permitting.

The U.C. Davis Nutrition department reference is in deference to my better half.

We are an odd lot in Sacramento.  We play at a store called Great Escape Games, on most Friday nights.

The original rules were to allow the MWWBK system to be used with machineguns mortars snipers armored cars etc.  The superheroes just become other units.  They have melee and/or firepower abilities.  With a few special rules.  They are based upon extensive Graphic Novel research by our team of experts.  But as in any academic discussion, there is considerable disagreement about the interpretation of the original source material.  The discussions have been known to go long into the night with much coffee (usually decaf) consumed.

Others insight would be appreciated in terms of the rules.  Recall they are a work in progress.  You must own and have read a copy of "The Men who would be King" to grasp their subtle nuance.

The SMUD action team is a unit from our second American civil war.  The figures are Zepplin raiders.  SMUD stands for Sacramento Municipal Utilities District.

Our Alt history is set after the death of FDR in January 1933.

SMUD was legislatively created in 1932.  In real world history they were fighting the Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) company in court for the right to sell electricity.  They did not win the right until 1947.   In our alternate history world matters are settled differently.  SMUD and PG&E are two small factions that can be recruited by the players, but never on the same side.  Like Trotskyites and Stalinists, but with cooler uniforms.

It all seems to fit together seamlessly. I love the names, setting & write-up.

Just in case Marvel or DC or whoever is as jealous of their names as the evil empire....

The Phantom is known as "The Purple Penumbra."
We also have Kemosabi, the Solitary Ranger and his Native American companion.
The Green Wasp and Tako,

Breitbart is based upon a famous 20s and 30s strongman name Isador Breitbart.  Who is said to be the model for superman.

More to follow.

Brilliant stuff!!!

Really inspiring and send me rummaging through my boxes. I am stealing your rules for a pre-WW1 bash. I have used TMWWBK for the 1912/3 Balkans War and I have a load of VSF steam tanks/walkers etc. I can see an epic bash in SE Europe coming up!
