Hi everybody !
New year, new project !
As I have some projects still running but coming to an end (mainly WW2 and dark age projects), I have decided to start a new project.
As my friend Durutti seems to be a great fan of Hannibal and his Carthaginans, I have to start a Roman army.
So here are the first test models (Victrix for infantry, and Aventine for cavalry).
From left to right : lord on foot, triarii (guard), principes (warrior) and velite (levy) :

My very first Wargames army came about for similar reasons. A classmate (I was 11 &
it was 56 years ago) one Stephen O'Leary (AKA Oscar) kept rabbiting on & on about
a geezer called Hannibal during history lessons. Really, just to annoy him I did my
first independent research.
The 'wonderful' Carthaginians lost the 1st Punic War, & the 2nd, and the 3rd
(4th don't really count, but they lost that too) all to the Romans!!! I had to get me some.
It being the 60s Airfix was my pocket money choice.
I didn't know that Airfix Romans were NOT Republican, in all the books (school/library)
if they showed illustrations of Legionaries it was Early Imperial.
Still it was MY first Wargames Army.
Ah nostalgia, it ain't what it used to be. lol lol lol
I will follow your progress with interest.

I had the crush on Scipionic Romans too, and nothing available in 1970s South Africa but those ghastly Airfix figures. I still tremble at the memory.

Hey! Those are my beloved, if badly led, first Wargames figures you are bad mouthing. lol lol lol

If I still had mine, I'd send them to you as an apology. lol

More models to come, as I'm currently finishing the centurion (will join the signifer) and a velite.

Beautiful painting.
-
Agreed, those are exceptionally well done! Beautiful tones in the reds, yellows and skin.
-
Thanks guys.
The shields are bit time consuming, but I'm happy with the result.
For today, I have finished the centurion and the first velite :

Me too! lol

Thanks guys.
It's clearly time consuming, but now I'm working on multiple models at the same time, and it's a little bit faster...
The first point of warriors (principes) is on a good way to be done soon (bronze on the shields, pilums, feathers and faces still to paint).

Well they are a bit good aren't they!
-
Coming along nicely
Cheers

Thanks, guys !
I've finally decided how to paint the shields to avoid confusion between guards/triarri and warriors/principes during games : all the warriors will have red shields with laurels, and the guards black shields with differents symbols painted on them (white shield for the centurion, and plain red shields for velites) :

And the whole army as it stands for now : warlord, 3pts of warriors, 3pts of guards and 1pt of levy (but I'm waiting for some Aventine cavalry, and I must find some cretan archers mercenary before calling this army complete) :
