Title: Post WWII tank war rules recommendation
Post by: Munindk on February 04, 2023, 02:21:04 PM
I need a ruleset for tank battles, set somewhere between 1970 and 2020. I'd like it, if theres rules for a bit of infantry and non-tank vehicles. An option for solo play would be a bonus, but not a requirement.

I've been looking at Bolt Action: Tank War and Team Yankee, though the latter doesnt sound like what I'm after, as its all about tank platoons, not individual tanks.

Any recommendations?

How about the cold war mod for What a Tanker from Toofatlardies?

https://www.wargamevault.com/product/294560/Cold-War-Tanker?term=cold+war+tanker (https://www.wargamevault.com/product/294560/Cold-War-Tanker?term=cold+war+tanker)
(you need the What a Tanker rules in addition to this mod in order to play)

I did buy it but I've only played WWII WaT so far.

Chaps, I bought the Cold War Tanker add-on from Wargames Vault. OK but IMHO not a finished product. My group play Great Escape Games' "Seven Days to the River Rhine". Set firmly in the 1980s, they are an infantry/armour game with other assets being represented more by a hand of cards. Worth a look. By the way we play it in 15mm but you could use 10 or maybe even 6mm.

Seven Days to the River Rhein was what I was going to suggest...

Cold War Commander? But might be a bit higher level than what you are looking for

What a Tanker is a dice game very loosely based around WWII tanks. The way it plays is weird, we thought it would play a lot better with WWI aircraft than tanks.

I would recommend Seven Days to the River Rhine, a good set of combined arms rules focusing on the close battle, arty and air are factored in via cards, as at the level played arty will have been fired, although I play with a chance that British at Coy/ Sqn level can call in 105 (Abbots) as trained. The Soviet arty is a little more rigidly controlled, although an Advance Guard would include a Bty of 2S1/ D30. Even Abbot crews trained in direct fire.

Would it be an issue to use Seven Days to the River Rhine with 28mm minis?

In theory not, but the movement and "short" ranges of weapons may appear too small for 28mm models. There are no maximum ranges for weapons, so in theory the whole table is "in play". However buildings and terrain blocks lines-of-sight adding some realism.
