Title: FUBAR!
Post by: Harry Faversham on February 09, 2023, 07:40:05 AM
Anybody had a go with these rules for Cold War gone hot? I've printed a set off, and fancy a pop as they fulfill the KISS Principle, which I know live/game by.
I'd much appreciate any tips, tweaks or house rules from somebody that's used 'em.

 :)

I recall looking at these about 6/7 years ago as they have a Star Wars version.

From what I recall it seems they came into being around the time the hive mind of Wargamers was getting onto the, not everybody always gets to do something ie Black Powder, Chain of Command, Mersey's Rampant style, Bolt Action when units pinned and needing to test to act.

There not really supported now, as the original creator Craig Cartmell I believe, went onto a more professional level, also there have been other free flavours of the month like One Page Rules.

As with a lot of will they/wont they do something is quite a marmite effect, so the most common house rule, was if fail to activate get 1 action, or can go to overwatch/ambush so at least not totally useless. Succeeding activation units get 2 actions, so there is still a benefit to succeeding activation.

Very sad, it always pains me when a disciple of the KISS Principle gets seduced by 'professionalism'!

I have author's credit for 5th edition, and while it's not been an active project for a while now, I love it when this gets played.

Kind of got the coach in front of the horse! Proper 'all arms' battle group action for the first game, when I really should have started with an infantry skirmish, and built up to the proper tonking match.

Steve, these are great rules, full of great ideas. Played them a few times and some of their ideas were "borrowed" for my house Nam rules. On their old forum (if it's still around) I posted about some Nam specific ideas and the hive mind chimed in with loads of good ideas for a flavour of the period.
