Title: Where to purchase brass spears?
Post by: LouieN on March 04, 2023, 07:25:20 PM
Hello,

I am running low on my brass spears.  I cannot recall where I purchased my original batch years ago.   looking for style that have spear them "pressed" on to the top already.  such as those shown below.

I need them for 15mm I am hoping to get a smaller starting length then 100mm.  I had 28mm "javelins" before.

Please let me know of any companies that carry this style.

Thank you

Not sure on brass however I just picked a steel version up at £10 for 40. Various sizes available.

Pendraken do these, a few different lengths and points https://www.pendraken.co.uk/weapons-1094-c.asp

I think Northstar do them too

Try using nylon instead of metal. It's cheaper, easier to customise, no more stabbing yourself, less pinging off and takes paint well. If you have a dustpan brush in the house they might even be right for 15mm.  If not try looking at cheap broom heads or maybe smaller brushes for 15mm.  One brush head and you'll have hundreds.

I made Roman pilum heads from brass wire with a hammer. Just like the real thing, but in small :)
I like the brush idea too, but why do make people 12 min videos about a topic which can be desribed with 10 lines of text and two photos?

Footsore have some in their shop also.

For those using bristle brushes: I tried it once, but the spear broke very easily next to the hand of the miniature where it was glued. Does superglue fragilise the bristles?

That's odd.  I've not had that issue.  I have mostly used cheap superglue but I've used Loctite as well.  Maybe a particular brand or a particular plastic for the bristles.  I assume the bristles don't break like that prior to gluing.

By Fire and Sword has them. Already scaled at 15mm. You can buy just the spears. Type in By Fire and Sword and look at Accessories.

I like to use thin wall brass tube:
https://www.hobbylinc.com/k-s-thin-wall-brass-tube-1-5mm-od-x-225mm-wall-4-hobby-and-craft-metal-tubing-9831

Cut and pinch the end flat.  Then a quick file gives it definition.  See below for an example:

Cheers

Buy electrical cable of the gauge that fits best, you can make truckloads for free in a weekend. That’s how I do mine.

buy brass wire from the arts supply store in approximate gauge.  Straighten and work harden the wire by putting both ends of a long piece (maybe 12 inches or longer) into a vise and some locking pliers  on the otherand twist it along the axis about 180 to 360 degrees, cut segments the right length, hammer flat the tip.  A quick nip to shape and a pass of file.  You are done.

The pre-made steel spears are essentially piano wire.  Very straight, and springs back to shape instead of bending.  It comes in different thicknesses.
Does anyone know of a source?
And, does anyone have a handle on what thickness is good for what scale figures?

I have done myself great harm with piano wire spears.  Ya might as well use needles and pins.

Great idea!  It'll keep peoples' dirty hands off my figures!

Here is an example of mine. A few years ago I had the electric wiring of the house redone, and I ended up with meters and meters of old cables in different gauges. I have pretty much endless supply of armature wire and means to fashion pikes, spears and blades. I even made katanas for my still unfinished samurai band. And I probably over did it with the realism cause I managed to stub myself multiple times by now lol
