I'm heading back home to Nottingham next week and while there I'm going to try to pick up the Lernean Terminators my group needs to finish our Paramar campaign, along with a bunch of other stuff.
In the meantime, I've been working on stuff for the Shadow Crusade campaign that we are going to start in late Spring.
I have the World Eaters, Ember Wolves, Death Dealers and Sentinels of the Edge stuff we will need, so next it is time to dive into the XVIIIth and XVIIth Legion stuff.
First up are the bad guys, of course.
Here are some Word Bearers. Specifically a fire support squad.
They count as troops but not as a mandatory troop choice. So you can use them to fill slots but not required slots, you still need some tactical marines to do that.
The Word Bearers will be focused on doing mostly boarding actions, underground fights and a big city fight so I'm going to be staying away from vehicles. For the most part at least. I'm sure a rhino or predator will sneak in there somewhere. And they will definitely have a dreadnought since I have three of them sitting around.
These guys are all armed with flamers, except the sergeant. I've given him the plasma pistol from the CSM boxed set along with an arm I found in there. It is a little chaosy but I figured the sergean would be a little further along the path than the rest of the squad and the Word Bearers dove into the warp before most other Legions even dipped a toe.
Flamers seemed like a useful weapon option. While they may not be great against marines normally, 9 of them, in close quarters, might change that calculous.
As far as painting goes, I used Khorne red over a black undercoat and then put contrast flesh tearers over that.
It was edge highlighted with Mephiston red. The black is just black with scavenblight dinge for highlights.
The metal is iron warriors with an agrax earthshade wash or retributor armour with reikland fleshshade wash.
The imagery is all from decals, mostly from the Betrayal at Calth set, I think exclusively from that. The details were touched up with some washes or paints here and there where it was needed.
And where would the Word Bearers be without their cowardly and conceited primarch Lorgar Aurelian?
Still in the Emperor's good graces possibly.
You've got to have him though so here he is too.
He probably won't show up in the campaign until about the 5th game. I actually did him more than a month ago and haven't gotten back to doing anything for this while working on other stuff, mostly orders.
-
Nice work! Are you planning to field an Erebus to go with Lorgar?
-
Thank you!
These are pretty scenario specific armies. The first few battles are going to be on the surface of Calth before the supernova (or whatever it was) and then probably a boarding action to kick off a BFG game.
Lorgar himself is for that battle with Angron and Robute in the city on whatever planet that was.
So I'll have to look into an Erebus. I think he was on Calth so he might work with the first game but I'll do my research before I buy one.
Here are some more guys, tactical marines this time for the first tac squad.
-
Nice work. Flamers are absolutely brutal in close quarters (assuming you're using the Zone Mortalis rules) - of course, I play Death Guard so mine are even better lol
-
I'm looking forward to seeing them in action.
I'm not sure yet how to do the Ultramarines. I'm tempted to have them mostly be veteran squads to represent the disorder in their ranks after the initial betrayal. So I'll probably do smaller units of fire support squads and irregular numbers representing some of the squads being significantly reduced right out of the gate.
Here is the rest of the 2nd Word Bearers squad.
I have another 5 tactical marines assembled but they will have to wait until I get back to see any paint. I may start to assemble a despoiler squad before I have to leave though.
-
The first of the Gal Vorbak rolls of the painting line today. I picked up some of these, some Ashen Circle troops, a few leader types including a diabolist and a XIIIth Legion Primarch while I was in the UK for this project. I also bought some of the new plastic possessed to bulk out the squad to a 10-man squad and so there would be all unique sculpts in it.
Neat figures, they look a little intimidating to paint with all the parts but once you decide on what is going to be what colour they are actually not hard at all to paint.
I'm going to try to get the other four done this week. I'm off Thursday and Friday with no plans other than to sit and paint. Hopefully, that will let me get a good bit of this stuff done along with the Ridgehauler I'm working on for my Spring Necromunda league.
-
It took awhile to get the rest of the squad finished, but here they are.
They are pretty neat models. I'm probably going to boost them to a 10 man squad. I don't want more of the same models as that would look weird and they are expensive. I'm going to get the new Chaos possessed and add them in. They aren't exactly the same as they don't have the bolt spitters but I'll either modify them in some way or just say they do.
I see that the squad can have a special weapon. I suppose the guy with the flames coming out of him could count as having a warpflame blaster or some such thing. He doesn't actually have a boltspitter modelled on him either.
-
And now for some guys from the other side. Here are some Ultramarine terminators. Someone has to stand up to the baddies, after all.
These are the first 5 of what will ultimately be a 10-man squad.
I'll probably give them the flamer that comes with the set vs. any of the other weapons. I don't want the Ultramarines to be kitted out with stuff that will be super effective against other marines. They are going to be designed to have stuff that would be of most utility against Orks.
I went with the metallic blue on them rather than the more traditional ultramarine blue because I thought it looked cool and was a nice contrast to the two traitor forces.
-
The metallic blue works really well - they look great!
-
Thank you. I got some more of the loyalists done. This time a support squad, well half of one at any rate.
I really do like this blue. I like how it looks on these guys even better than on the terminators. Plus it is super fast to do.
I have a pretty good start on half of a Word Bearer's despoiler squad, all the chain sword guys at any rate. I'll post them when they are done.
-
Time for another Word Bearer. This time a character.
This is a Forge World model. I got it when I was in Nottingham. I've looked at this model a bunch of times but never really had a good army to use it in. It seemed a little over the top for Thousand Sons and way wrong for World Eaters or Rout. But it works perfectly for Word Bearers.
I'll have to get back to doing more regular infantry soon and I'll probably start on Roboute next week.
-
Impressive figures.
-
Although initialy i was very enthousiastic about WH40K or rather Rogue Trader when the whole circus moved to Big Armies, i bowed out and went my way. However, the miniature of the Spacemarine standing on an altar or rock is very good or even outstanding. His face is painted in an excellent fashion. Actually, he looks like Aleister Crowley. >:D
Well done. Kudos to you & thanks for sharing. L63
-
Thank you, guys!
I've moved on to some mortal troops for the armies of the Word Bearers. I'm not sure how advanced their cultists would be by the time of Calth, but later in the campaign they probably had some raving lunatics. I love these models and will use them for the new Inquisitor game too, so by the time we get around to Armatura I'm sure I'll find a use for them in this Shadow Crusade campaign.
They are such cool figures I couldn't not paint them.
The Witch is my favourite. It is a psykers head attached to some sort of preservation device with a guy walking around behind it supporting it, and the psyker. He has tubes coming out of his arms. I painted them so that red blood is going in from the left army and warp tainted blue blood is going back in to the right arm.
This was also the only figure that didn't get dust on the bottoms of his robes as the psyker likes to stay clean.
Of note, Warhammer 40K badies are so tough that while they may be guards for the leaders, Ringwraiths are guards only for the leaders of the lowest of the low in the Chaos forces.
-
I managed to finish the full squad of volkite armed ultramarines.
They are going to be far from the most useful unit on the tabletop, but they will be pretty flavourful I think. The XIIIth thought they were going to be going off to finish off some Orks, so volkite would be a weapon that would be perfect against them, even if not so much against fellow marines.
I'm still working my way through the last 5 Ultramarine terminators and I've started on the primarch himself.
I'll post some pictures of the terrain my group is working on soon, too.
-
I got a rhino done for the Word Bearers. It isn't going to be useful until a little later in the campaign, but I had it and it was already built so I went ahead and painted it. It is one of the old chaos rhinos but I figured that would work perfectly for Armatura.
I have a couple of AFVs to use for my XIIIth Legion guys. I still need to build those. I have another chaos predator already built from long ago that will go with the XVIIth legion forces. I'll probably do that next then turn to more infantry for the early games.
-
I got five more Ultramarine Terminators done to finish the squad of ten.
These guys have been sitting on my painting bench for a while now. I think they were some sort of barrier as I haven't really started any other infantry while working on them. Now that they are done I'm hoping I can get to some more regular Ultramarine infantry and finish up the despoiler squad for the Word Bearers.

WIP Terrain - Gloriana Class Ship (Macragge's Honour) Auxiliary Bridge for this campaign
It's now in Pictors Studio's care for detailed painting.

Impressive, even unpainted :-*
-
I haven't managed to start painting the bridge yet, but I did get around to doing some other pieces for our Shadow Crusade campaign.
I got another squad of XIIIth Legion guys done and a weapons turret.
The weapons turret is the Hydra Turret from Marvel Crisis Protocols. It is a pretty neat piece and comes with options for missiles or big particle accelerator weapons.
I'll post a separate review of it later.
It isn't quite finished. It comes with a little Hydra symbol that goes in the front but I'm going to see if any of my 3D printing friends can print out an Ultramarines symbol instead.
I've painted it a more generic blue so I can use it with my World Eaters as well sometime.
-
Very cool! The turret looks great and must looks to have a heap of potential uses on the tabletop.
-
Here are some Naval Troops for the Ultramarines to use on the surface of their ship against the XVIIth Legion forces.
We'll probably just count them as Solar Auxilia with shotguns instead of lasers or maybe just give them lasers. In our games against human troops Astartes bolters will count as blast weapons in terms of what they are hitting, not using the actual blast rules though.
-
Nice! :-*
They came out well!
-
Thank you. I was pleased with how they turned out.
I really like those figures too, useful for all kinds of sci-fi things. Given some of the specialists they would make a neat Sci-fi firefighting team.
Since I ran out of Fleshtearer Red my Word Bearers have been languishing. I just found a store that had some and got two pots. I spent the day finishing up the unit of Despoilers.
Nothing stunningly new about these guys over the last couple of units of XVIIth Legion figs I've posted.
I used a lot of the arms from the Chaos Space marines that came in the Kill Team box with the Eldar Pirates.
For others I just used the close combat arms that come on the MKVI armour sprue for the sergeants.
You're allowed two regular guys with a power weapon and two guys with plasma pistols plus the sergeant. I guess the smart thing would be to give the plasma pistol and the power weapon to the same guy so you he can be one of the last you take out, but this isn't for a tournament so I gave them to different troops.
I did give one of the plasma pistols to the vexilla guy and one of the power weapons to the coms guy. Mostly because I forgot they had those options when I built the first five of them. Looking back on it I'd probably give the vexilla dude a power weapon and the plasma pistol to someone other than the coms guy but it doesn't matter too much.
I got five possessed to fit out the squad of Gal Vorbak to a ten-man squad. I'm working on them next. One of them is done and I'm going to start on another tonight.
The next gun tower is almost finished too. I just have to get another coat of white on it and finish painting the missiles. The energy weapon turret is done.
-
It has been a little bit since the last update, but hopefully this is worth it.
I got the XIIth done today.
He's not my favourite primarch model by a good margine, but the details are certainly there while not being too bad to paint.
I went with the metallic blue scheme on him to match the rest of the Ultramarines.
So he can run around punching Word Bearers on the ship . . . as soon as I get the ship painted.
I also managed to finish a bunch of those Naval troops they released for Kill Team. We are going to use those as Ultramar Solar Auxilia Naval Troops, if such a thing existed. Whatever they are called, they are going to be the Naval troops for the Ultramarine fleet so there will be some of them on the hull trying to stop the dastardly marines of the XVIIth legion.
-
Lovely mini, mate! :-*
Very well done especially considering all those little bitty details that are located just about everywhere.
-
After months of preparation we had our first Shadow Crusade game yesterday.
As the Word Bearers used Calth's defensive network's weapons to destabilize the star, they devastated the population and launched a devastating attack on the Ultramarines.
After massive losses, crippling to any other military force, the XIIIth Legion was able to regroup and fight back. After withdrawing as many people and soldiers from the planet as possible the Ultramarines raced to get into the underground arcologies.
The Traitors were no less vulnerable to the coming radiation storm.
In this game two forces race towards the entrance to one such subterranean base.
The Ultramarine force was slightly more killy while the the Word Bearers were slightly more mobile. Both sides had about 1800 pts.
They had 8 turns to get to the tunnels leading to the entrance to the arcology.
Once in the tunnels regular marines would have an extra turn to get into the bunkers themselves.
Terminators and vehicles had an extra turn being more protected. Vehicle crew were able to disembark and counted as regular marines outside of the AFVs.
Transports were not limited to carrying one specific squad and could pick up and transport any squad. They were, of course, still limited by their capacity to transport a given number of models.
The Word Bearers started off by moving up with most of their force but trying to gun down some Ultramarines. This didn't go so well as the targeted unit fired back and the XIIIth used their advanced reaction to have another squad fire back too. Between the two squads they eliminated a whole squad of Traitors while only losing two of their own.
Conveniently, this allowed the Land Raider explorator to pick up the remnants of that squad as it had a transport capacity of only 8.
The Gal Vorback surged across the table towards the Ultramarine lines.
The Ultramarines had their turn being stymied by their opponent's advanced reaction. The support squad with plasma cannons fired into the advancing Gal Vorback but the Word Bearers chose to take all the hits on one of their models. This vaporized that one Traitor but left the other 9 deadly possessed warriors surging towards the Ultramarine ranks.
The Tratiors continued to advance, losing their rhino and having their Ashen Circle devastated by loyalist fire.
Meanwhile the Gal Vorback managed to engage the loyalists. This was the saving grace of the traitor cause. The traitors were able to absorb a huge amount of shooting from the loyalists on the way in, taking fire from all three XIIIth legion tanks, the plasma cannon guys and the terminators and only losing two models. So, they were at nearly full strength when the terminators charged them.
While not being well equipped to take down terminators they absorbed a fantastic amount of damage while kicking out just enough of their own to keep things on a nearly even footing.
This titanic fight would take up a number of turns and just as the terminators were gaining the upper hand the Word Bearer Consul joined the fight. His thunder hammer was able to rip apart terminators and turned the tide in the traitor's favor.
The rest of the Word Bearer's were making a beeline for the caverns.
They used what little cover they had to keep out of the way of the Ultramarine armour.
While all of this was going on the traitor Predator made a suicidal attack on the Ultramarines heavy support dueling both the plasma cannon support squad and the Sicaran.
Ultimately it was able to destroy the tank and eliminate all but the sergeant in the support squad, who used a crack grenade to take the tank out after a number of attempts.
The Word Bearers reach the arcology first with the remnants of their Ashen Circle squad while the rest follow closely on their heels.
The Ultramarines have moved more slowly but arrived in more force in the end and start gunning down the traitors.
As the energy of the star is streaming towards the planet the last desperate actions are carried out.
The remains of the Traitor support squad, the sergeant, and the last two despoilers charge the Ultramarine support squad. Despite being outnumbered by more than 3 to 1, the Traitors are more equipped for close combat and quickly even the odds. The remaining Gal Vorback joins in the assault and the odds dramatically swing into the Word Bearers' favour.
The Ultramarines decide to flee before their opponents and try to make a run for safety. The crew from the Predator leave their tank and flee into the caverns.
The energy from the star washes over the planet and those left outside the sheltering arcologies were killed by the massive doses of radiation.
The Ultramarines managed to get 14 marines into the caverns, while the traitors were only able to get 5 in. This gave them a difference of 9 marines and was a minor victory for the loyalists.
It was a very close game, despite how things looked on the first turn. The Gal Vorback really put things on a more even footing after that first devastating Traitor turn, absorbing every shot the Ultramarines were able to take on their first turn.
The speed of the Traitors was not quite a match for the firepower of the Loyalists as it turned out in the end, but it was still a very narrow victory.
The table of victory looked like this:
Difference between marines
0-5 = draw
6-10 = minor victory
11-15 = major victory
16+ = epic victory.
Where Terminators, Gal Vorback and independent characters counted as 2 marines.
-
A great looking battle. Can't get much closer than that.
-
We had a good time with it. Even the people watching got pretty emotionally invested as the game went along.
Hopefully the next one will be as good. I'm still working on painting the terrain.
-
I managed to get a few more Smurfs done for this.
The leader is the Praetor model in Tartaros terminator armour. I've had the model kicking around for about 4 or 5 years now in the blister trying to decide what to do with him. I guess I figured it out.
Then there are four more tactical marines.
I also did a little piece of terrain, a wrecked jet bike, or part of one.
I'm working on a couple of bigger things for our Armatura game now and will probably work some space marine casualties in for all three armies while I'm doing those.
-
I decided to try painting one of the new Knight lancers. I'm not sure I have much use for him in games in general but when we play Armatura it will be big enough to put one on the table.
This thing is massive. The space marines at his feet almost seem like they would be beneath notice.
Besides other knights and big tanks I'm not sure what it is supposed to fight, exactly.
We'll have a few primarchs in the game so I guess that lance would do a good job of skewering one of them, although it will only be one on the other side. I guess there will be a few tanks worth its time.
A pretty fun model to work on, though. Nicely detailed, just a big version of the little ones I've painted so many times now.
-
That is huge. I'm sure it will draw quite a bit of attention on the field.
-
I got some more XIIIth Legion guys done.
Bikes this time. Nice to get something a little faster into the Ultramarine's force for Armatura.
I also got some casualty figures.
I like these figs. I'll probably get some more for all of my Legions. Likely I'll paint up a whole set of each for each one.
