Been lurking a little while, figured I would start sharing my work. I'm going through and painting the Space Marine army of my childhood dreams, many years on... aiming for all the metal sculpts I wished I had back then.
I finished a Lieutenant Commander tonight:
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/angry-griffin-vintage-rogue-trader-warhammer-40k-space-marine-lieutenant-commander-painted-ulramarines-600x600.jpg)
They're mostly Ultramarines (http://"https://www.instagram.com/theangrygriffin/") but I can't resist diverting into a different chapter for a sculpt that particularly calls for it!
-
Welcome and lovely work! Especially love the sword.
-
Excellent 8)
-
That's pretty awesome 8)
I especially love the skull on his right shoulderpad and the particularly bright eye lenses!
This reminds me I really should get back to doing some more RT Mentors... ::)
Please keep up the good work though!
-
Thanks guys! Got another one done tonight:
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/angry-griffin-warhammer-40k-metal-vintage-rogue-trader-space-marine-in-artificer-armour-4-painted-as-ultramarine-games-workshop-600x600.jpg)
-
Nice and vibrant colours chosen for a very good paintjob - well done that!
-
Love it 8)
Can I ask what you’ve used on the bases?
-
Very nice, really captured the era with the paint jobs :D
-
That looks fantastic!
I always liked the way the RT figures played with armour styles, and this one was a favourite.
Also, very cool painting the visor to show the face beneath! Wonderful little touch that really elevates the figure.
-
Truly excellent!
-
Thanks guys!

I am so glad that other people can see the face there, it took so many goes to get right!
Love it 8)

I lean on pigments pretty heavily to get the bases looking the way they are - the exact pigments used and order of usage is here (http://"https://angrygriffin.net/wp-admin/post.php?post=4507&action=edit").
-
Thank you :)
-
Awesome work on the visor :-*
-
Seen these on the gram! Lovely stuff that visors great
-
Thanks guys!
Got another one of the Armour Variants range finished last night:
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/angry-griffin-metal-rogue-trader-warhammer-40k-space-marine-armour-variants-corvus-1-vintage-games-workshop-painted-ultramarine-colours-600x600.jpg)
Amazing how much more mousey they look when the vents are turned 90 degrees.
-
Looks cracking mate.
-
Another looker, that 8)
Would you please share your recipy for the eyes? It looks like you're putting some hint of yellow in there?
-
I saw on Farcebook that you're not using washes, contrast or the like. The resulting pjs are really bright and refreshing.
What's your average turnaround on a fig painted this way? 3 hours ?
-
Those are fantastic. Love the way you did the eyes.
-
Looking forward to what you produce next! :-*
-
Thanks everyone!
Another looker, that 8)

I paint the lens in titanium white, then go over it with a light green (Diarylide Yellow/Phthalocyanine Green) then darken with diluted black progressively towards the top, a dot of white up there, then along the bottom I run a thin line of titanium white then go over that with yellow (Diarylide Yellow/Toluidine), gradually blending that yellow into the green. Once that's done I go back over the very bottom again in white to push that brightness.
I used to build up from a single pigment green (Phthalocyanine Green) but found that working with one that is already mixed with yellow makes for easier and more natural blends up to that brighter yellow with less effort.
I have to say that looking at what pigments are in the paints has helped a lot with this sort of thing because some of the greens I have have little bits of blue mixed in with them etc. which make life harder when you're just trying to make the green lenses really pop with some yellow.
I saw on Farcebook that you're not using washes, contrast or the like. The resulting pjs are really bright and refreshing.

Cheers. I really enjoy painting the bright colours and avoiding contrasts/washes/metallics is forcing me to improve my brushwork and think a lot more about the lighting and reflective qualities of what I'm painting. I am also painting with the lighting I will use for the photo in mind - making sure that the highlights make sense with regard to where I'm going to position the strobes for the pic, or at least trying to.
I don't think I have gotten one done in 3 hours yet - the guy with the facemask I got done in four, I think the corvus chap posted just before was about the same. It's a far cry from a year ago (http://"https://www.instagram.com/p/CcAf5ybPx15/") when it'd take me about 8 hours without basing and with using metallics/contrast/washes/etc.
-
Loving the 3rd marine!
-
Great PJs … love the visors :-*
-
Thanks guys! I got the 1990 World Eater finished tonight:
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/angry-griffin-world-eater-1990-games-workshop-khorne-berserker-jes-goodwin-sculpt-vintage-citadel-miniature-painted-600x600.jpg)
-
Another great piece of painting! 8)
Love the obligatory pile of skulls on his base too :D
-
Yeah he’s cool!
-
A brutal looking dude, cracking job.
-
Thanks guys! The second mini I got done this month was another Ultramarine:
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/angry-griffin-metal-vintage-rogue-trader-warhammer-40k-space-marine-brother-fielding-with-shuriken-gun-janner-600x600.jpg)
Brother Fielding.
-
Cool, I particularly like the alien look of the catapult and the free hand detail.
-
That's pretty! 8)
And I have to echo the previous remarks about the freehand and shuriken catapult.
Also; I really still need this particular one for my own project :D
-
I'll third all that, quite outstanding
-
Wow, great freehand!
-
Thanks guys. I think I spent more time on that one shoulder pad than I did the entire rest of the mini!
-
First one for June. The 1989 Mark Copplestone Captain:
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/angry-griffin-rogue-trader-mark-copplestone-space-marine-officers-captain-sculpt-painted-as-ultramarine-metal-vintage-games-workshop-600x600.jpg)
I'm particularly happy with the little freehand skull on his leg - unlike the upside down Omega symbols which never quite come off how I want them to, that one actually came out how I saw it in my head.
-
Another excellent one!
I especially like his molten powersword; very lifelike 8)
-
That sword is magnificent! :-*
I am starting to worry about how many of these genetic supermen have chronic hip dysplasia, mind...
-
Another excellent one!
I especially like his molten powersword; very lifelike 8)
Cheers! I do quite like the visual effect of it but I can't get out of my head the image of it hitting another close combat weapon and bending around it like a damp noodle due to it being molten... I think the effect worked better than the Lieutenant's power sword from a month or two ago - I find these three-facet power swords are a bit of a challenge to do but I think I'm happiest with this approach.
That sword is magnificent! :-*
I am starting to worry about how many of these genetic supermen have chronic hip dysplasia, mind...
And back problems! Good lord they're all stooped. Thanks!
-
outstanding painting skill :-*
-
outstanding painting skill :-*
Thankyou!
I had a go at Brother Repp tonight:
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/angry-griffin-rogue-trader-warhammer-40k-space-marine-brother-repp-with-melta-gun-painted-as-ultramarine-vintage-games-workshop-citadel-600x600.jpg)
No decals again, still practicing the freehand!
-
These are great 8)
-
Another corker, that! :-*
-
Magnificent thread - love your brushwork!
-
Thanks guys! I'm hoping to have one of the original dreads done by next month sometime - I had a go at one last year but just couldn't pull it off in a way I was happy with, here's hoping it goes better this time!
-
I managed to get Chuck done:
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/angry-griffin-vintage-metal-rogue-trader-contemptor-dreadnought-chuck-games-workshop-warhammer-40k-600x600.jpg)
-
Great work again! Things are certainly coming together 8)
Is Chuck actually wearing a cape? lol
-
really nice additions :-*
-
Great to see these old school miniatures, but it is the paint jobs that really make them pop. Lovely work, particularly with the freehand.
-
That’s really cool 8)
Love the cape lol
-
Is Chuck actually wearing a cape? lol
Yes he is and it's bloody fabulous! That just captures the RT era for me, the excess and sheer "why not"-Ness of it all.
And it doesn't hurt that it's a cracking paint job either. 8)
-
I love everything about this thread! The outstanding paintjobs of course (these are consistently beautiful - dunno how happy you are with them, but I'd be over the moon), but also the minis, the nostalgia, and most of all... a dread with a cape :-*
-
Thanks very much guys!
sheer "why not"-Ness of it all.
That's so very much what I was thinking when I put that cape on him - I was looking at the remnants of the Praetor sprue and saw that the cutout looked like it'd just fit nicely over the motor at the back, and then... well, why not indeed!
-
It's awesome for sure! I've never seen one on a dread before, but it makes all kinds of 40K-sense 8)
Must be an interred capain or something...
-
Must be an interred capain or something...
The cape came from a Praetor so I figure that's who's in there! The serial on the front was picked for him being the first dreadnought of the 23rd Chapter of the 13th Legion which I suppose makes him a 1st ed dread with a 2nd ed paintjob and relatively recently written Horus Heresy-era lore...
-
He keeps racking up the editions. Gotta catch 'em all! :D
-
Something not power armoured for a change! I wanted a break after spending the best part of a month on that Dread, so here's one of Mark Copplestone's 1988 Commissars:
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/angry-griffin-vintage-metal-imperial-guard-commissar-mark-copplestone-1988-sculpt-oldhammer-astra-militarum-painted-games-workshop-citadel-miniatures-600x600.jpg)
Three pigments for the body - a blue, yellow and red combined with black and white. Kind of a Zorn palette plus blue, I guess.
-
Great work! I especially like the effects on the bayonet! 8)
-
Cheers! I’m still working on NMM but it’s getting better… slowly!
-
Great work! I love all of this thread! Especially the Dread, I have that one still in the 90s paint job I gave it as a teenager. I painted teeth on mine too (I think it was compulsory), although clearly I missed a trick by not giving mine a cape.
-
Brill 8)
-
Great job on the commissar. I always loved Mark Copplestone's Citadel work!
-
Thanks guys!
This guy isn't lead but I think he probably belongs as part of my nostalgia force - he's one of the monopose marines painted for Darren Latham's painting challenge, and took me a month of painting time to get to this point. No decals, all freehand this time around!
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/angry-griffin-1990s-2nd-edition-games-workshop-monopose-space-marine-2nd-edition-box-painted-as-an-ultramarine-darren-latham-challenge-oldhammer-final-600x600.jpg)
-
Superb 8)
-
Awesome 8)
Welcome to the 2nd ed revival squad! :D
-
cool - great PJ well worth the effort - and quality retro base colour to!
-
Great job, particularly on the knee pads.
-
Thanks guys! After getting some less than positive feedback about the lenses I went and re-did them - six times in the end - and I'm leaving it there. Updated the pic.
-
They looked good before but yeah they do look even better now. Lovely paint job sir.
-
Cheers! That's definitely nice to hear after so many iterations trying to get them looking right...
-
Very good.
-
very 90th vibe :-*
-
Cheers! After spending so long on that guy it was a relief to do something else - I painted a Satyr Studios oldhammer sculpt:
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/angry-griffin-satyr-studios-painted-sister-female-space-marine-ultramarines-vetus-pattern-backpack-jpg.webp)
Was really good fun - I modified the shoulder pad to have the rivets and added a backpack of my own design.
-
Great work, as usual! 8)
That sculpt is interesting. I was caught by the nostalgia wave years ago already, and it's been really taking off of late, but I didn't realize there's people doing retro sculpts now!
I'll be sure to check them out...
-
Wow, the 2nd edition plastic is amazing. Can't believe they aren't decals.
but I didn't realize there's people doing retro sculpts now!
I'm part of the oldhammer sculpting page (haven't posted anything though) lots of cool old school sculpts coming through on there. Some amazing limited run metals that I wanted but couldn't purchase due to budget restrictions.
-
Cheers Beefs :)
When you say page, I take it you mean a Facebook page? I don't FB myself, but this might still be worth a look...
-
Yep, sorry for that. I think it might be a private group but at least one fellow on there has done homages to the greater chaos daemons from classic images.
Satyr Art Studios https://satyrartstudio.ecwid.com/
Google him and you'll see some awesome old school things. Here's a reddit page https://www.reddit.com/user/SatyrArtStudio/
-
Looks I'm going to have to shell out for his Ladies of Chaos!
The one with the gun would fit in perfectly with my RT era Slaaneshi warband and Slambette (?) will find a good home in my WoC army as a champion of sorts.... :D
-
Sorry not really lol
-
I painted one of the Jes Goodwin sniper scouts while I try to figure out what I want to do with the backpack of a Chaos Renegade.
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/angry-griffin-metal-warhammer-40k-space-marine-scout-with-sniper-rifle-2-jes-goodwin-sculpt-painted-as-ultramarine-010109002-600x600.webp)

-
Great stuff again!
I especially like the mottled browns of the cloak 8)
-
Superb 8)
-
Thanks guys!
I especially like the mottled browns of the cloak 8)
I was kind of going for an oiled leather look that had been worked on to make it camouflague - and tried to paint it so it wasn't quite the same as the base but was close enough to look like it was meant to blend in. Not sure I'm completely satisfied with the attempt but I did end up with what I was aiming for.
The next one I might have a go at the currently popular "activating active camouflage" look - my blending may be good enough to pull that off these days, I had a go a couple of years ago and couldn't nail it.
-

That sounds like it'll be worth the wait! 8)
-
Not a lot of time to paint this month, but I have got one mini done - one of the classic Chaos Renegades:
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/angry-griffin-metal-warhammer-40k-rogue-trader-chaos-renegade-warrior-michael-perry-sculpt-facemarine-headless-body-and-chainsword-070366-painted-600x600.webp)
-
Absurd...and yet cool. Lovely choice of colours and execution sir.
-
Not the time to loose one's head.
That's not the way to get ahead in life.
It's a shame he wasn't more headstrong.
He'll never be the head of a major corporation.
Okay, that'll do.
Sorry; had to be done... :D
Great work again; the paintjob is lovely and complements the miniature nicely!
-
Very nice.
-
These are all amazing; straight out of a 90s White Dwarf. Well done!
-
Love it 8)
-
Superb, that's a grand old model done justice 8) 8)
-
Very nice job. I still love those '90s renegades.
-
Thanks guys!
Been a long while since painting sessions but I got Brother Holt done this week:
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/angry-griffin-metal-rogue-trader-space-marine-brother-holt-with-flamer-painted-as-ultramarine-games-workshop-warhammer-40k-oldhammer-vintage-miniature-citadel-600x600.webp)
-
cool
-
Such a characterful face. Cracking paint job sir.
-
Very cool 8)
-
He looks wicked! 8)
I've got this guy myself, but I'm on the fence wether or not he would fit into my Mentor Legion force, as he's so feral looking :)
-

There's always one...every legion has them lol Though in the case of the Space Wolves they are probably the quiet one sat in a corner reading romance poetry.
-
Thanks guys!
I was chasing a bit more pop with the base coat this time around but I think I landed on just a lighter blue... ah well. Here's one of the C100 Marines:
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/angry-griffin-c100-imperial-space-marine-vintage-games-workshop-citadel-bob-naismith-painted-as-ultramarine-warhammer-40k-rogue-trader-600x600.webp)

-
Gorgeous work! I’m in awe of those eye lenses, thanks for sharing :-*
-
Beautiful work as always.
I do like those original marines, but I'm glad they went with the bolters for future releases, the Dustbuster of Doom isn't quite as menacing...
-
Splendid 8)
-

Thanks! Those lenses took a few goes - the sunnies with no gap in the middle took a little bit of figuring out vs. the regular separated lenses.
Beautiful work as always.

Thanks! I don't quite know what to make of the vacuum-rubber-bellows-thing on the butt end of the gun - it's certainly very sci-fi looking though!
Splendid 8)
Thankyou!
Hoping to get another mini done before the end of the month, playing around with an old Champion of Chaos to see if I can make that work!
-
Well, I didn't get him done last month but I didn't miss it by that much.

This guy is a sculpt I always wanted to get my hands on and was lucky enough to do so at the start of the year. Jes Goodwin does some great work.
-
A great classic mini and lovely execution...I particularly like the jade green cloth.
-
Fantastic! The horns he’s throwing up are just the icing on the cake, great work on the painting :D
-
A great classic mini and lovely execution...I particularly like the jade green cloth.
Cheers! I haven't played around with green much but after working with a green to shade the red on the Khorne chap last year I reversed it here - the cloth is just two paint pots (red and green) with white added in.
Fantastic! The horns he’s throwing up are just the icing on the cake, great work on the painting :D
Thanks! It was a really fun sculpt to work with, just the right amount of detail and the horns sold me on it being the first Chaos Champion sculpt I wanted to chase down haha.
-
Another one done... Artificer Armour #1:
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/angry-griffin-warhammer-40k-rogue-trader-space-marine-artificer-armour-1-070270-4-painted-as-ultramarine-vintage-metal-citadel-games-workshop-sculpt-2-600x600.webp)

-
Ooh that's a bit good... 8)
-
Cheers! The armour style on this guy was good fun to paint, it's markedly different to work with than the usual Mk6/Mk7 plates!
-
Yeah, there's a much more industrial vibe to it which is interesting.
Could be down to the rivet gun he's holding, I guess.. :D
-
Splendid 8)
-
Love the artificer armour. Didn't know there were ever actual models with it.
As with the rest of the thread terrific work.
-
Another awesome addition to the line-up! the contrast between the blue and the red is particularly striking with this guy. Looks great 8)
Love the artificer armour. Didn't know there were ever actual models with it...
There were four different versions, each quite distinct from the others.
Bottom row and one row up, rightmost model :) (http://www.solegends.com/citcat1991a/cat1991ap007smarmourvariants-01.htm)
-
Cheers guys!
Here's the last one of the Artificer Armour'd guys I had to paint:
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/angry-griffin-warhammer-40k-rogue-trader-space-marine-in-artificer-armour-2-070270-5-painted-as-ultramarine-vintage-games-workshop-citadel-miniature-metal-600x600.webp)
-
Fits in perfectly with his brethren; great job again! 8)
The backpack looks to have acquired a very modern attachment btw ;)
-
Cheers!
Haha yeah I wanted a little something extra from the backpack so I sculpted a set with the U on the back and a variety of antennas and whatnot on top. It didn’t exactly hit the aesthetic I was going for but it was fun nonetheless.
-
Retro-awesomeness :)
Great work with these old minis.
-
Great work as usual. I really like the nurgle champion. To echo others, colours on the cloth are great
-
Just caught this thread. Wonderful painting on some very old & fun miniatures.
-
Thanks guys!
Got one last one done for the month - Female Warrior Gabs:
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/angry-griffin-warhammer-40k-rogue-trader-adventurer-female-warrior-gabs-painted-as-ultramarine-space-marine-vintage-citadel-games-workshop-metal-miniature-600x600.webp)

-
HERESY!!! >:(
But a very nicely painted heresy, mind... ;)
-
That sword blade looks amazing! :o
-
That sword blade looks amazing! :o
My thoughts exactly. Very nice work!
-
Thanks guys!
Here's another one - Brother Hamilton, or Gideon Fax from the Combat Cards (http://"https://angrygriffin.net/metal-rogue-trader-space-marine-brother-hamilton-070106-2/").
(https://angrygriffin.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/angry-griffin-metal-warhammer-40k-rogue-trader-space-marine-brother-hamilton-aka-gideon-fax-marine-medic-painted-as-ultramarine-600x600.webp)
-
My favourite RT Space Marine sculpt ever! (I blame the Space Marine Painting Guide; the little red book, for that ;) ).
And you did him all kinds of justice; great work again 8)
-
Masterpiece, looks splendid.
-
Cheers guys! I totally forgot he was in the painting guide, I need to go dig that up now...
-
Had a go at some reflections with a Rogue Trader Librarian:

-
Excellent again! 8)
'Don't you know the Dewey filing system?'
-
Another fantastic power sword. 8)
His forehead looks really sore, he should get some aloe vera on that.
-
Cheers guys!
I had no idea his forehead was so bulgy until I started painting him... couldn't quite tell in the catalogue pics and I didn't notice when I undercoated him either! It's amazing what details turn up in these old sculpts once you start paying attention.
-

Its obviously an early example of the psychic hood ;), the psychic forehead lol
Nice old skool mini and even better painting.
Glen
