I am planning to run a large Gangs of Rome participation game at MOAB convention in Sydney in October and I hope to keep a record of my progress here.
I've completed my first building and this serves as a sort of prototype of the style I hope to achieve for the whole table. I intend on making as busy a table as I can manage with lots of buildings and scatter. I did quite a bit of procrastinating and research as I am want to do before undertaking any build and watching HBO's Rome was a great source of inspiration (and very entertaining).
This kit is Sarissa's Semi Detached Small Mixed Shop/Domus and represents a home with attached shop (or taberna), which in this case is a pottery shop. I have decided to try and make each shop a unique business if I can. Here my 3D printer comes in very handy, allowing me to make all the little details that sell the building being a real lived/worked in place.
In the next build I hope to go into a little more detail as to what I actually did, as this time around I was too busy working it out myself.
This is the first building, the pottery shop:

Stunning work. I can almost smell the garum.
-
Lovely work Frank. :-* :-* :-*
Looking forward to see what you make. :)
-
That looks really great!
-
Superb mate 8)
-
Really nice work.
-
Superb…..I’m off to Pompeii shortly and threads like this start me thinking on new projects….must resist…..
-
That is very nice indeed. I look forward to seeing the table come together. Too bad I don't live in Sydney anymore!
-
I saw the pics on FB and I should have known it was you! Great work!
-
Nice work.
Now, can someone tell me why those danged amphorae were built the way they were? Every time I see them I think they will always spill their contents with those pointy ends! :)
-
Thanks all for the comments.

Something to do with this I think...

Yep, it was a transport design, mostly to let them rest against each other in ships/boats.
Thanks all for the comments.

Super work - looking forward to seeing Rome emerge.
-
Wow. That level across the table will bring the city to life.
One of the reasons I have avoided the topic myself! lol lol lol lol

I've done the second building, a wine bar or popina, which I have named the Blue Cock, in honour of an iconic Australian fast food restaurant (10 sesterces to anyone who knows the reference). These bars were found in all Roman settlements, catering to the needs of the plebs and slaves. I'm beginning to understand although why they say that Rome was not built in a day...
I've been asked by a few people in other places to give some more details about the processes I use so I have made a tutorial on my blog here for anyone interested http://adventuresinlead.blogspot.com/2023/04/gangs-of-rome-food-shop-tutorial.html

Last time I went to Pompeii, I was astounded to find the little street vendor fore runner fast food joints outside the amphitheatre gates with the sunken amphora / pots in the counters just like yours….great detailing, loving this.
-
Beautiful work on the buildings! The details in the popina really add a lot of character.
-
Superb looking buildings!
-
That Mosaic of the Rooster though! Jaw-dropping. :o :-* o_o
-
Superb buildings. :-* :-* :-*

Lovely work and cracking eye for detail.

Loving it mate 8)

Stunning…the details really make the whole model pop :)

Another great addition! Not sure if that kitchen fulfils the HACCP regulations though :)
-
Thanks all - appreciated.
Another great addition! Not sure if that kitchen fulfils the HACCP regulations though :)
lol I'd tend to agree - certainly a case of "caveat emptor".
-
This is amazing, I love the details
-
That is fantastic: love the Rouge Rooster!
-
That Mosaic of the Rooster though! Jaw-dropping. :o :-* o_o
Seconding this, You have to let us know how you did it.
-
That is fantastic: love the Rouge Rooster!
Yup - that's the one ;)
Seconding this, You have to let us know how you did it.
I'd like to say that it took some level of skill but it is simply a mosaic from the internet printed out and hit with a gloss varnish - that is it.
-
These look absolutely brilliant Frank :-*
You can barely tell there’s an MDF building under there (which is a good thing ;)) Wonderful detailing and painting.
I can almost see Falco lounging outside, eating a meat pie…

I can almost see Falco lounging outside, eating a meat pie…
And singing JUNGE RÖMER… :D
Fabulous work on both f the buildings!

Thank you gents. :)

In-between working on my next proper buildings for Gangs of Rome I have made a quick scratchbuild of a latrine or foricae. It is basically a simple foamcore box with a mdf base following the dimensions and style of my other Sarissa buildings. I designed the foricae, tub and tersorium (sponge on a stick) in 3D Builder and printed them out. I wanted the finish to be appropriately grotty, as any public toilet should be.
Even though they change out the tersorium weekly, could the latrine's proximity to the Blue Cock popina be the cause of the wine bar's salmonella problems? Nah.

Right down to the shitty stick ;)

Thanks all. Your encouraging comments will help spur me on, as I have a LONG way to go. :)
Footsore and Sarissa are kindly sponsoring the table I plan to do and I am really grateful for their support.
The next building depicts four separate ground floor tabernae with living quarters above. The tabernae from left to right are a grocer, fishmonger, glassware seller and another small wine bar (popina). There were many popina in a given town so I plan on doing quite a few more of them. The glass merchant is obviously doing well enough for himself to jazz up his taberna a little.
While detailing this build I realised that many of the accessories I put into the shops won't be seen from the street at all, making them a little superfluous. I fully detailed the grocer but you can see that any accessory beyond the counter will rarely be seen. I think I've come to the conclusion to only detail what will be seen from the street and to resist detailing the interiors.

You are right in this but appart from painting, what gives life to the buildings is exactly what you put on them.
While in terms of gaming is really appelative to watch all those details and the gaming table looks superb, at the end i think you´ll have to find a middle term that satisties what you are after as the end result.
-
Love it mate 8)
Walls of Rome next (as you well know) :D
-
It looks so cool!
-
Brilliant! All the paraphenalia is just so good.
-
This is just marvelous. Love it, and can't wait to see the next installment, let alone the completed project!

You are totally right Rui - it is finding the balance.

Well the "Walls of Rome" may be a little ambitious - but there will be walls. ;)

Superb work, it’s going to look amazing.
As to interior detail - isn’t there going to be some fighting in the buildings with the roofs being lifted off, giving spectators an extra little surprise? :)
-
Absolutely stunning work. I hope I can get to MOAB to see it in the flesh.
-
Fantastic! Those have an amazing 'lived in' look. :-* :-* :-*

There well could be fighting within but then by adding internal detailing it makes that harder to pull off. A bit of a catch 22.

Why don't you try to install interior lighting in the shops? I would never leave any details away, because they add so much life to what you're doing there. With an appropriate overhead light source (warm white LED - costs are virtually nil) you'd really gain another eyecatching feature! Batteries and switch could be easily installed in one of the living quarters upstairs.

This was actually suggested to me by another as well - it is a great idea. I might have to look into it but I do plan on a pretty large table which would mean quite a bit of extra work.
-
Really impressive stuff Frank. ;D
-
There are artificial candles that are LED T-Lights.
You could simply attach one to the underside of the roof or ground floor ceiling.
They are very cheap and work quite well.

This is some stunning work! It's this kind of thing really makes the table look lived in!

Awesome work!
So, MOAB in October you say....

Thanks all - your comments are appreciated.

Yes mate, that is the plan. Thinking about coming along?

Would be keen if I can get away for the weekend. Will investigate and let you know. Might see if I can drag Craigus along and make an event of it. Would there also be a bit of a chance to give BotS a run or will the sole focus be GoR?
-
The Saturday and Sunday would be GoR focused but I could possibly try to arrange some BotS outside of the games?
-
Sounds very promising - I should have a better idea of how I am placed a bit closer to the event, but will definitely try to make it there if I can.

Aye, verily. The October long weekend is the weekend just before cricket season starts so if Craigus can't make it I will try to bring the Little Fish along. they both like gaming and Roman history would love to try out your terrific looking table. Be nice to get back to Emerald City for reasons other than work.
Right, you've got me all enthusiastic now. Might have to get out some half finished Thracian and crowd and get them done.

Having received more buildings this week I decided to start on Sarissa's Lower Rank Insula Corner. I decided to make this a butcher shop as I have planned to do one for ages based off some Googled images. The poor ate very little meat so this would likely be a mid rank store in the scheme of things. Arranging all the hanging meat was pretty challenging but I am very happy with the results. I was planning to put a small shrine on the blank wall around the corner but opted to make it a small pottery stall instead. I will save the inbuilt shrine idea for a later build.
The majority of the accessories for the butcher were kindly donated by Key Capas, a very talented 3D sculptor whose style is very realistic and mostly historically based. She has a shop on MyMiniFactory and I believe the butcher STLs will be available very soon. https://www.myminifactory.com/users/KeyCapas
The second build I completed was the Warehouse Block. This is a pretty imposing building measuring nearly 30cm wide and will take up a good amount of space on the table. Applying the fridge liner roof tiles to this kit was a bit of a challenge as it is the largest roof area I have tackled this far - but I have only myself to blame there. I really like how the doors open on this kit and the mechanics of it are really well done. One set of the doors pass straight through the warehouse, allowing it to be a thoroughfare of sorts. I haven't detailed the warehouse with accessories as I have a lot of scatter that can be placed in and around it quite easily.

Just stunning there mate and you GoR stuff will look get on it. I spoke to Andy the other day and give me a shout if you need any help with the game

Thanks all.

It couldn't be simpler SJWI. Just prime the tiles with a black spray paint (I use a dirt cheap brand) and then start drybrushing with a burnt orange. I vary how heavy I drybrush over certain areas and then go back heavier in some spots. Quick and easy.

Great looking buildings :)
Details really set the scene!
-
This time around, instead of doing a single Gangs of Rome building or two at a time, I have constructed a group of buildings, doing the roofing and sidewalks altogether in a batch. I will detail the buildings singularly or in pairs, as this is proving the most time consuming part of the project.
The next building I have fully completed is Sarissa's Workshops. This is one of the few single storey buildings in the entire Streets of Rome range and has a footprint similar to the ranks of shops. I chose to make the workshops a metalsmith and carpenter, but also considered other trades like a leatherworker, mason or tilemaker. There is a small shrine to Vulcan above the forge that I will try to fit a tiny statue into at a later date.

This is the third wine shop (thermopolium) I have done for my Gangs of Rome table. As I've stated before, these types of tabernae would have been as prevalent as they are in a modern city and I could imagine citizens having their favourite places to drink or eat on every street. I think there would be an abundance of thermopolia as Plebeian Romans had no means of cooking in their own home and so relied on places like this on a daily basis.
The building I used for the thermopolium is another of Sarissa's Lower Rank Insula Corner kits. I like these particular kits because you can do something interesting with the bare wall around the corner from the shop front. I did some "renovations" on this build by making a second opening to the wine shop by simply dremmelling out a hole in the blank wall. I also added a drinking fountain on the corner's gutter out of blue foam and some beads. It was high time to prove to myself that I still have some scratchbuilding skills what with all this MDF I've been working with. I filled the fountain with some clear resin after making sure the basin was watertight.
I'm not sure about the bull mosaic and so have made it removable. The last image shows the wine shop without the mosaic and I'd like to hear what people think of it.

Looks terrific and the bull mosaic is, for mine, a winner.
-
Looks great and I actually like the bull mosaic in place, the wall seems kinda bare without it.
-
Love the whole thing and agree the bull mosaic deserves to stay. In a world where literacy is far from universal signs matter.
"Where are we meeting?"
"Cornelia Faustina's caupona."
"I don't know it, which one?"
"The thermopolium with the mosaic of the bull outside"
-
Cracking on there mate, love it 8)
As to storage; build first, think about it later. It's worked for me lol
-
Fantastic project and I agree the wall looks blank without the bull mosaic so I vote it stays ;)

Keep it, Keep it!! lol lol lol

Briliant work mate. :-* :-* :-*
Time for a group photo?
-
Thanks all for the comments and thoughts.
The mosaics on exterior walls are likely unhistorical but the buildings do need something to break up the monotony of the limited palette I am using. I am planning to add some graffiti at some point but figure it will be either too small to read or gigantic like some examples from Pompeii or The Life of Brian.
As to storage; build first, think about it later. It's worked for me lol
Unfortunately I have already taken your advice here James to the detriment of my wife. lol
Briliant work mate. :-* :-* :-*
Time for a group photo?
Thanks Rui and yes a group shot is well overdue mate but I am still waiting on a decent mat to display them on.
I'm about a third through the planned buildings at this stage. o_o o_o o_o

The next Gangs of Rome building is this nondescript property known locally as the House of the Pomegranate, an upscale lupanar, or brothel. My inspiration for this was from the scene when Titus Pullo takes Octavian to the brothel in HBO's Rome. The House of the Pomegranate is one of Sarissa's Semi-Detached Small with Flat Roof kits and it was a nice change to not have do add any pan-tiles to this one. At a later time I may detail the open roof area with some couches and plants.
The front room of the lupanar has a large wall mosaic of Venus. Roman brothels are well documented for their highly "descriptive" wall murals but I need to keep this pretty tame as the table will be displayed to the public and players may include kids. I also used a rug that was simply printed and cut out from normal printer paper.

Unfortunately I have already taken your advice here James to the detriment of my wife. lol
Good man, long may it continue :D
(I see it certainly is lol )
-
I so love this project and every time you add to it, it just get even better.
-
Absolutely fantastic project, Rome really comes to life with those buildings! If I ever again doubt the potential of mdf buildings i need to come and revisit this one :)
-
Lovely work. I add my vote in favour of the outdoor mosaics. They look cool. :)
-
Thanks for all the supportive comments. :)
The tenth building I have completed for my Gangs of Rome layout, a book dealer, and the kit is again another of Sarrisa's Lower Rank Insula Corner.
Roman "books" were not our modern idea of a book of course, but scrolls or "book rolls". I stupidly decided to make my scrolls by hand, when I could have just 3D printed them. That's about two hours of my life I won't get back! They probably do look a bit more authentic although because I used the pirate-map coffee staining method on them.
Apparently exteriors of bookshops were plastered with advertisements and choice quotes from the titles in stock. Martial once told a friend not to bother going in, since you could “read all the poets” on the door posts.
I've been wanting to add some greenery to my builds for some time and this time I included a trestle and climbing plant. On the blank wall of the building I made a small street shrine, likely to Jupiter.

Love it mate. Also love the fact you made the scrolls by hand 8)
-
Agreed. The shot of the buildings interior really brought it to life, cracking sir.
-
I have not been on this board for awhile.
Glad I took a look.
I must say I am very impressed with the detail on the buildings.
Really love what you have done. :-*
I have spent a fair amount of time over the last few days, drooling.
Thanks for sharing, looking forward to seeing what is up next.

Now that one is just outstanding (not that the others aren't!)

Mighty fine work, the blue coc looks like a fine establishment
Cheers
Matt

That was 2 hours well spent - the scrolls look amazing and definitely add to a fantastic building :-*
-
Superbibus! :-*

Greatus. :-*

And given the latest news from Pompeii I assume a pizzeria is next on the building list :)

Glad you guys seem to be enjoying it - don't want to bore people with endless building images. My goal is to get a table set up soon but I am waiting on a suitable mat.
This is the first upper rank building I have completed - a moneylender. Although temples formed the first banks in Rome, private moneylenders or government supervised argentarii did exist. The kit is one of Sarissa's Upper Rank Insula Corner kits and has been my first experience with Sarissa's MDF pillars. I have to admit I was pretty dubious about how these would turn out but I am pleasantly surprised with how easy these went together and of the overall final look. I'm very keen to tackle the temple now. The interior is fairly plain and features a floor mosaic that was simply printed out from a Googled image and gloss varnished.

Having not visited this thread since it's early days - I am agog. You are stepping bit by bit to what will be remembered as a 'legendary' project, long remembered by all those fortunate enough to see it in person. And pretty well remembered from here, too.
Seems you decided to continue on with a lot of the interior detailing. While much of it might never be seen, especially during a game, there is one person who will always be pleased with that extra effort. And that, sir, will be you. It's always been a bit backwards part of miniatures gaming - we build what we wish we got to play on and then mostly it gets played on by others while we run the game. But I suspect in your quiet moments - when the tsking wife when you really do exceed the available limits beyond her endurance allows you those moments to yourself - you will relish that extra effort as you either play solo or just sit back admiring and imagining actions on what you've built.
Superb effort, sir. Truly. Oh, and I love the black base under the tiles mini-tutorial, I would not have thought to use black but it is highly effective.
If you have not, you really need to watch the old movie, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. And you need to find some proper 'courtesans' to populate the brothel! Just tell the kids the ladies are preparing to take a bath. lol
Looking forward to more. And if you don't find the right mat, make one yourself - I think that might ultimately be necessary to match to what you've done. I hope to be truly stunned by the group shots.
-

I picked up some embossed wall-paper, well a 'sample' of the roll.
This I wall paper pasted to a cheap offcut of MDF from a DIY store.
Dark base colour & some dry brushing later, it makes a serviceable
base for my Peninsular buildings. Cheap, not difficult & it does the job.
If you can make those wonderful buildings, you can make the base.
-
Perhaps I've missed any mention here in this thread - or perhaps it is in another thread - but I have not seen any figures yet. And it is July. And your game is in October. I know it is a 'skirmish' system. But those figures are going to need to match the buildings, no? Maybe someone else is painting the figures? Just wondering is all.
-
Lovely work Frank :) Keep ‘em coming 8)

Great work Frank, they look superb, each a work of art of its own. :-*
Looking forward to seeing the game in due course ;) :)

Tip-top work, as ever, mate.

Hello,
Superb project !! Roman houses are finely detailled !!! Great work !!!
Nikkobourges
-
Again thank you for everyone's words of encouragement. It really helps to drive me on through these big projects.
The miniatures are actually being done by my mate who will assist me at the table across the two days. He is a very busy man although so they will be getting a simple lick of paint for now.
I treated myself to a break from my ongoing work on tabernae and instead dedicated some time to completing a Sarissa Precision Temple. The finished kit makes for quite an impressive and imposing build and will form the center of my marketplace/forum. I opted to make this a temple to Neptune simply because it was the best free Roman god statue STL I could find. I went for a classic colour palette that may well be more Hollywood than historical but I much prefer the clean white look.
I intended to do some pedimental sculptures for the tympanum by adjusting existing 3D files but nothing I came up with looked right. I would love for a 3D artist to design a simple tympanum that would specifically suit Sarissa's temple.
As I have mentioned before, I am really impressed with the appearance of Sarissa's pillars in this range. For mdf I think they really look the part and they have done a great job on their construction, which is both simple and very effective.
Right - back to butcher shops and bakeries for me...

Good stuff. Aiming to run BotS on the Monday too.

Great work, kudos! One minor caveat: the sacrificial altar would not be inside the temple cell, it would be outside of the temple, in front of the stairs leading to it. No one apart from the priests would be allowed inside the cell, all the sacrifices were held outside.

Good point; the current set up does look really good though with Neptune looking down at the sacrifice. Nice composition.

Good stuff. Aiming to run BotS on the Monday too.
Sounds good. Will try to get there for a day of GoR and at least a morning of BotS. Chance would be a fine thing. :D

Work has been continuing furiously on my Gangs of Rome project, still following my early change in tact to batch build the remaining kits. I will concentrate on finishing the remaining buildings to a stage where they are table ready and then detail them further as time permits.
The next kit I have completed in full is the Sarissa Roman Bakery. This had been in a semi completed stage for quite some time but I couldn't find accessories I was completely happy with. The floor of the bakery and its adjoining courtyard are XPS foam flagstones, very similar to the guttering on the street.
The majority of the bakery accessories were created by, Key Capas, whose excellent work can be found at her MyMiniFactory shop here https://www.myminifactory.com/users/KeyCapas (https://www.myminifactory.com/users/KeyCapas)

Another great model. :-* :-* :-*
-
Another little masterpiece!
-
More great work.
dare I say, 'Just what you... kneaded' lol lol lol
-
Cracking stuff mate 8)
-
Amazing project!
-
Yes absolutely wonderful, your painting is excellent, can't wait to see the final scene. These Sarissa Precision buildings are so tempting, too bad they don't exist in 20mm, I would need some for my EIR army.
-
Fantastic! :-*
-
WOW! What an amazing discussion, with so many inspiring examples of advanced modeling projects. Stunning.
Dan
-
All of this is just so good. Tremendous project!
-
Blood and ashes Frank! That is amazing, the build, the texture and paint and the little details you are adding really bring it to life. I can easily imagine the townsfolk living and working in that town. Looks smashing sir!
-
Hey Dude! Sonny Huy here from Facebook!!! I know that I would find you here as well. I have been a member for quite some time here, but haven’t posted in a while 🙂🙃 :-*
-
Thanks for all the comments - they are much appreciated. :)

Matt! You are back! It will be at MOAB if you can get there mate.

Hey Sonny. Yeah the evilness that is FB drew me away from LAF but I've been trying to visit here more often.
-
When are you going to play!?!
-
Hello,
Excellent project !!!! We are waiting for the miniatures....
Nikkobourges
-
Wow!
This is amazing.
You are getting really close to edge where you are not building wargaming terrain but dollhouse dioramas.
-
Very nice work on the buildings. Looking forward to seeing some games.
The Temple reminds me of Colchester. You could do some great scenarios with Romans fleeing back to the temple pursued by angry celts. Spoiler: it doesn’t end well for anyone. ;)
-
Wow! You really bring these buildings to life, I like the Sarissa buildings range but don't seem to be able to do them justice.
-
When are you going to play!?!
I hear you, Facebook has a tendency to do that, same with Mordheim. But that group is so good that I don’t mind. Cool to see all your awesome stuff posted here, they are fantastic! 🌹❤️
-
I was kinda hoping to get an invite!
-
Hello Furt,
I just read the whole thread and I want to say that your project is very exciting and amazing! Your pictures are truly a feast for the eyes! I am impressed by the level of details.
-
Thanks for all the interest - it helps to keep me plugging along.
We have already played a trial game of the GoR2 rules to prepare for the MOAB convention which is 29th Sep.
I would have preferred images of the table complete but here is some group shots as the table stands:

That is an outstanding table:an impressive standard right across the board!
-
I cannot begin to describe my jealousy lol what a lovely table.
-
Well done. Soup-Urb. :-*
-
Love it mate, now make a colosseum :D
-
That looks delightful 8)
-
That's really impressive Frank. :-*
-
This is a fantastic project - love the detail :-*
-
Tempting to fly to Australia if just to get into the game! So envious.
-
That is outstanding! Very nice work.
-
Table looks lovely. The shots down the street and through the arches are great.
I wonder would it be more "interesting" to vary things a little? eg what about spacing out the buildings in one area (eg by the temple) to create a plaza and cramming them in tighter in another area to create some alleyways?
I get the idea of using the aqueduct as a stopper/end piece but for such an amazing model I'd be tempted to slap it front and center right through the city! It would also give cover with the arches and another tactical element to the layout.
-
A stunning looking table that only needs some figures to bring it entirely to life!
I look forward to seeing further photos.
Will we see Milo, Clodius or the Gracchi brothers?
Or perhaps Marcus Didius Falco and Helena Justina?
Whatever, more power to your elbow!
-
Wow, that is a really great looking table indeed!
-
Very nice. I'll bet that wasn't built in a day.
-
Very very nice, just went through the whole thread and very inspired by what you have done.
Roof tiles look great and it's a fine idea to copy.
You just need a mountain of clutter to make it looked lived in but I'm sure that's well in hand.
Cheers
-
Utterly beautiful :-* That’s a magnificent table fully worthy of the Emperor.
Just needs a Frankie Howard figure :D
-
Knowing Furt, he probably has one. ;) ;) ;D ;D lol

Hello,
Superb table !!!
Nikkobourges
-
Thanks for all the interest - it helps to keep me plugging along.
Late to the party as usual. Absolutely beautiful work, and I may have to steal some of your ideas.
One question though: where do you get the stone flooring found in many of the interiors Of your buildings? I initially thought it was the paper you can get for dollhouses but it has some texture to it.

I have a blog post about it here http://adventuresinlead.blogspot.com/2023/04/gangs-of-rome-food-shop-tutorial.html, but it is just DAS Air Dry Modelling Clay.
