Title: Five Leagues from the Borderlands - The Gentlemen of Much-Piddling
Post by: Mad Lord Snapcase on April 16, 2023, 09:54:59 PM
With an appropriate acknowledgement and thanks to Plynkes, for inspiring our beginning.

Contravivifications in Defnascir

The three of us had been together for some time now. I was reflecting on this, as the ferry Idolator made its way through the murky seas of the Back Passage, heading towards the island of Chunter. The weather had been kind to us, bad weather being the norm when sailing southerly through the Back Passage, from the Offal Ocean. The island of Dollop lay to the west, shrouded in mist. To the east, we could just make out a thin brown strip, which must be the main island of Chunter, in the Barony of Defnascir. Somewhere there I thought, must be our destination, the thriving market town of Fiddling-cum-Nicely.

A few years ago, the three of us (unknown to each other then) had been contracted by the Baron Saveloy de Chumsfanleigh (pronounced "de Chuffley"). The contract was to rid the Barony of Chalk of a serious outbreak of the Aranea Brassica or Cabbage Spider. This was not the normal household spider but a poisonous, ugly, spider. It would crouch in its spot glaring up at the world with a cluster of beady black eyes under a mop of itchy bristles. It looks excessively unattractive and it’s bite could kill a human. There were a few hairy moments, but we came through, mentally scarred, but physically unharmed.

We’d continued adventuring together, taking contracts here and there, fighting bandits, riding patrols, questing and delving and facing the rather unpleasant but familiar aspects of war, famine, pestilence and death. This had led to us responding to a plea from the island barony of Defnascir for sell-swords.

Defnascir’s ruler was the cruel and sadistic, Baron Piers de Gavescon and his consort, the Baroness Rennie de Gavescon. The peasantry were suffering from severe taxation and law and order had broken down, outside the towns and villages of this island barony. Sir Andrew Liversalts, the Baron’s chancellor had become a hated man amongst the islanders and was responsible for the harsh tax collection system in Defnascir.

On the ferry, we had met a Mystic. One Tiffany Aching or more properly, Tir-far-thóinn. By a strange coincidence, Tiffany hailed from the Chalk, which was how we got talking. She was heading to Defnascir for a change of scenery, she said. Not wishing to pry too deeply into her past, we accepted that at face value. After a few bottles of Red Duck had been shared between we four, it was agreed that Tiffany would accompany our party.

We four knew very little of Defnascir as we sailed towards the safety of the harbour at Fiddling-cum-Nicely. As usual, we were concentrating on the prospect of putting gold in our purses and to be honest, not much else.

We knew that the Barony’s main religion was the Temple of The Quivering Brethren, run by Archbishop Rhodomontade Quaver (who hasn’t heard of Rhodo Quaver?). An alternative religion, only just tolerated by the Baron and the Archbishop was Pastafarianism, whose adherents only eat pasta. There was of course, the banned religious sect, the Followers of the Rupture which had many adherents in the outer islands of the barony.

So, we knew we were heading into a land riven by strife, religious hatred and dispossessed malcontents. Our usual bill of fare! Just then, I heard the crew of the Idolator, preparing to guide us into the harbour. I went below to collect my sword and gear. A divertissement was brewing, were we ready?

Looking forward to seeing how you get on.

Thanks. I have to admit that I got the map from the internet. I erased the existing names and then inserted my own, so a bit of a cheat, really. We are just in the character creation stage now.

These chaps will provide the pool of followers, from which we will use two initially. Best to prepare for casualties, I think! They are Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grubb, Flack and Trump.

These are some of Archbishop Rhodomontade Quaver's fanatical Quivering Brethren. Their mission, to travel the Barony, quivering threateningly at anybody who looks even remotely heretical. Note that Brother Maynard (second from right) has the The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch in his keeping.

The next job is to paint one of our threats, The Ruin Within, criminals and murderers, compelled
by a dark power.

The land crawls with those who would bring destruction and death for a few blood-stained coins or to sate the whims of their madness. As the Ruin takes hold, it spreads across the towns and communities like an invisible sickness, tainting all that it touches.

Adventurers and agents of the law notice that many outlaws often come to believe in the supernatural patron known as the Mistress of the Mist. Adherents believe she guides their steps and hides them from prying eyes, but she is said to demand payment in coin and blood for her services.

Doug

We are going to have to do a bit of practice in the mirror, making ferocious faces!

In view of the senility maturity of the party, I have elected to keep a campaign diary, so we do not forget our escapades.

Many thanks, Pattus Magnus. The book is just a picture with blank pages. I used MS Publisher to add the text boxes and the ink and coffee stains.

Yes, it does look like its going to be a lot of fun. We're still in the set-up phase and I'm painting minis for it, but we are still getting a lot out of it, even before we have our first game!

Re-based some old Elves to represent the Ice-Heart Court.

It is believed that in the primordial times, the ancient Fey Courts held wind and sun in their power. With a word, a Fey queen could ravage a land with storms, or scorch it with sun. However, as the old gods emerged, the Fey had to relinquish more and more of their power, driving them back into the deep forests and the snow-capped mountains.

Across the land, the Ice-heart Court seeks to reclaim their ancient rights. Their terrible queen seeks to plunge the world into a perpetual winter where she would become powerful enough to challenge the gods themselves.

...and some more old minis re-based ready to be a deserter squad.

Whatever army these came from is irrelevant. They’ve figured out that pillaging the countryside is more profitable than fighting in the field.

Well done Sir.

This is amazing progress on getting miniatures ready to play a campaign! And they look great too!

Very inspirational - I have my copy of the rules, and have been looking to put appropriate teams of figures together, but seeing you get them up and ready to go is brilliant.

I am looking forward very much to seeing some battle reports, if you get time to put some together.

Plynkes, I have been combing through old painted stuff and rebasing, which has cut the time down considerably. The brigands in brown and the skeletons are the only two units I've painted specifically for this game. However, I do have about another four units ready for painting, hopefully we can get gaming whilst I do these.

I found some old Gondorians and have rebased them. I think they will do well for quite a few enemy units; Deserter Squad, Time-Lost Warriors, Fey Soldiers or Knights, Torn Flags and Forsaken Elite.

Create a warband (or two) and start tracking down figures! 5L uses unusual races and "classes" (eg. birdmen, zealots). The follower's description means you get to use some NPC miniatures in your warband! You can definitely do the usual proxy, of course.

I'm not used to elves being upset (: but love the Elven Queen. Archon's Deuslair KS (two days left) has some rather unseelie fae that I guess I'll find useful.

Glad I backed Reaper's Bones way-back-when and got the Dreadmere expansion, as it has various disreputable and down-and-out types who fit the followers I rolled up in my warband. Thankfully, have some birdmen and catfolk from Bones III, but they're of an Asian bent. At least they're the Outsider class, so I can add some Asian background to the narrative.

This site has an interactive map of D&D's Faerun, including town histories and descriptions.

Many thanks, ced1106 (that interactive map is superb) and blacksoilbill.

We've seen a lot of the enemy, so now it's time to have a look at some of our heroes. Two of our heroes (Thorvald the Skald and Tiffany Aching) are away, on a secret mission. In the meantime, our other two heroes have made their way to the Pilchard Inn, on the quay in Fiddling-cum-Nicely. They've heard it's a fine place for recruiting followers. Sure enough they have selected two likely-lads.

Here we have from left to right, Hugh Pugh, his twin brother Lew Pugh, Ilsa von Spanckwürst, Warrior Princess and Bara Brith ap Cyffylliog, an archer with druidic connections.

Thanks all. We have a 'character creation' session scheduled for tomorrow via Google Meet. This could mean the two introductory scenarios suggested in the rules, will take place the week after.

In the meantime, another delve into the small print at the back of the campaign diary reveals the traumatic and disturbing story of Thorvald the Skald. Those among you of a nervous disposition, should look away now!

Thankfully, I read my pre-publication copy of Thorvald’s tale already fortified by my evenings g&t or I may have been driven, paradoxically, to drink. A dark and unsettling account indeed of a young man’s journey to adulthood. It may not be a surprise to learn that the author of this excellent but grim story is from Yorkshire. In case there’s any doubt, the final sentence of his story is complete confirmation.

I agree wholeheartedly! Your addiction to Cucumis Sativus results in unbearable and noisome flatulence, along with the accompanying malodourous and virulent pernicious atmosphere in our dilapidated and cramped accommodation in the Pilchard Inne. However, needs must and until we have more coin, we must suffer the ill-effects of a shared room. We must sally forth soon, to earn the necessary gold marks to free our Compagnye from this odoriferous  and chock-a-block billet!

We managed to gain a contract (more of that when I update the campaign log) to clear out a camp of Dust Hounds, so I painted some yesterday. All set for our first encounter on Wednesday coming.

Fierce and highly aggressive canines, packs of Dust Hounds prowl the land, looking for prey. While normally they would not attack a group of Humans, it seems the dark whispers in the foggy forests affect them too.

Bara Brith ap Cyffylliog is surging with energy and enthusiasm as the prospect of action approaches. Despite members of the Compagnye spreading slanderous rumours about his responsibility for the malodorous miasmas afflicting the lodging, he knows full well that the actual cause is the experimentations with pig dung and horse urine of the mystic Tiffany.

Well, we shall see. The Dust Hounds in their lair, already look to be scenting danger. Or are they scenting some distant odour of cucumber flatulence?

Thanks for taking a look at my 3D map! (:

Definitely would like to see your battle board with your photos. Good to see how well clear bases work with fantasy mini's.

So I'm guessing Wednesday's game will be with friends? I like solo, since I can reuse the mini's and setup for more than one game. Maybe send in a solo warband to scout out how dangerous the doggies are? :D

EDIT: Did your download Chris' 5L reference card pack from the FB group? Very handy!

I'm keen on the social aspect of gaming, so I play 5L with my gaming chum and we split control of the war band between us, playing co-op rather than solo. So far it has been the most fun I've had in gaming for years.

ced1106, it will be, but it will be via Google Meet. The three of us in our little group (The Gentlemen of Much-Piddling) live quite some distance apart. We do meet face-to-face, but only about once a year. So we decided to have a weekly on-line session. 5LftB seems to fit the bill very nicely.

We are going to control two characters each. We are also keen on the social aspects, but as explained above, we can't do it as often as we would like.

I'm sure we are going to need some cultists at some point. What game doesn't need a band of cultists? As Plynkes has shown in his thread, the Frostgrave Cultists are ideal for this setting.

These cultists represent the 'Followers of the Rupture', a cult which is forbidden in Defnascir. They normally frequent the outer islands, but as you probably know, nobody expects the Followers of the Rupture. Their three main weapons are surprise, fear and an almost fanatical devotion to The Rupture!

The Compagnye are en route for the lair of the Dust Hounds. Thorvald the Skald (Vagabond, not seen in this iconograph image), has gone ahead to scout the route.

Left to right: Hugh Pugh, Lew Pugh, Ilsa von Spanckwürst (Mad Lord Snapcase), Tiffany Aching and Bara Brith ap Cyffylliog (Doug ex-em4).

The board is now set for tomorrow's game. Bara Brith ap Cyffylliog, the Compagnye's Master-at-Armes, is even as we speak, concocting a fiendish plan to wipe these pestilential hounds from the face of Defnascir.

There are two hounds in the lair (centre of the 3' x 3' board). There is one hound in each of the three right-hand tiles. These three are prowling around the Great North Road, the site of their predations. To the right of the Great North Road, begins the Forest of Gloomwallow, a dark and forbidding forest indeed. The Compagnye begin their approach from the left.

There may be some loot in the lair.

The calm before the storm. Bara Brith ap Cyffylliog can just be seen on the left, surveying the lair.

I'm liking your gang. Hugh Pugh and Lew Pugh (or is that Huw Pew and Lugh Pew?) remind me of the soldiers in the Witcher video game. They look great! Lovely table, too.

When do you recommend a 3x3 board vs. a 2x2 one? I've only seen 3x3 for a dungeon in the rulebook.

How are you playing the game with the other player? Coop... GM vs. player...?

And if anyone's played Dungeon Scum and 5L, do start another thread and post your opinion!

Here's a pic of the starter scenario on the Reaper boards. Easier to upload there. Still painting! :P

You shouldn’t have long to wait. The Mad Lord took all the photos, he’ll be along soon with the visuals. Suffice it to say, it was a splendid game and even though I was playing via a video link, it felt like I was taking part in a face-to-face game, thanks in the main to m’lud’s investment in technology.

Not sure I did see a size for it in the rules. I just wanted to use my existing terrain and put that ruin in the centre. We ended up playing on only about 4 tiles anyway.

Rules say 2x2 or 3x3, it's up to the players. The former pits you into the action that much sooner, so it's all a matter of how much manoeuvring you want before people start walloping each other. To be honest, you don't get all that much breathing room with 3x3 in my experience so I imagine 2x2 is very intimate.

Fierce and highly aggressive canines, packs of Dust Hounds prowl the land, looking for prey. While normally they would not attack a group of Humans, it seems the dark whispers in the foggy forests affect them too.

It is early morning. Just as the roseate fingers of dawn creep over the Great North Road, the Compagnye assembles to the west of the Dust hound’s lair. The early morning mist is reduced to pockets of moisture in the hollows. Although the Compagnye can hear snuffling and whining, the hounds seem unaware of their presence.

Master-at-Armes, Bara Brith ap Cyffylliog runs over his plan of attack again. Ilsa von Spanckwürst advances cautiously. She crosses the River Piddle, which is luckily only knee-deep at this time of year and crouches by a gap in the stone wall.

Meanwhile, Bara advances up a small hillock which commands a view of the immediate vicinity. Ilsa’s attempt to sneak up on the lair has alerted the hounds. Bara takes aim at a hound in the lair but misses. He blames the moisture in the air affecting his bow string.

Thorvald the Skald makes a bold figure as he crosses the Piddle and attempts an alternative route to the lair. The intention is to make the hounds divide their forces.

The hounds respond to the sounds of movement. One particularly large one jumps right over the ruined wall and Ilsa advances to engage. Another from the lair and two from the road skirt round the wall, heading for the river.

Ilsa and the Dust Hound fight furiously, neither giving ground or able to score a telling blow. The black streak in her otherwise pure white hair warns the alpha-hound that she may be more than a match for his viciousness.

Tiffany Aching crosses the Piddle and casts a spell on Ilsa, giving her the ability to cross rivers and walls as if they were not there.

Bara looses another arrow, misses again and utters a string of curses in an ancient tongue.

The Pugh twins are across the river, Lew supporting the Skald and Hugh running to assist Ilsa. Thorvald uses his sling against the nearest hound, only to see his shot bounce harmlessly off the stone wall to his front.

Ilsa is pushed back into the river by the alpha-hound. It’s snarling jaws dripping with putrescent saliva.

Lew joins Thorvald just in time to confront the first of the hounds, with a second, close behind. Sphincters are tightening in the Compagnye as it looks as if they will be overwhelmed by the sheer ferocity of the attack.

To be continued...
Title: Re: Five Leagues from the Borderlands - The Gentlemen of Much-Piddling
Post by: Mad Lord Snapcase on May 04, 2023, 08:48:26 AM
Lew Pugh attempts to hit the hound with his staff, but it becomes entangled in his legs. In the struggle, the hound floors Lew and is he is out of the fight. Thorvald has no time to see if he still lives, as he is fighting for his life.

Hearing his brother cry out, Hugh changes course and heads for the fight by the wall.

Ilsa pulls back from the alpha-hound to guard Tiffany, with whom she has formed a close bond. Bara takes the opportunity, lets fly another arrow and get a clean kill. The first success for the Compagnye.

Over by the wall, it’s two against two.

Thorvald manages to kill his hound as it closes on him. Hugh is pushed back by the other hound.

A third hound arrives to even the odds again. Things are hotting up here.

Meanwhile, with the effects of Tiffany’s spell coursing through her veins, Ilsa leaps the dead hound and lays into the next hound with a mighty ululating battle-cry.

Tiffany casts the same mobility spell on herself as she determines to make a bid for the loot in the lair. She can now cross the walls fronting her with impunity.

Bounding over the walls as if they were not there, Tiff closes with the loot.

Meanwhile, back at the wall, Thorvald uses his sling again and this time wounds and stuns the hound. Whilst the hound is stunned Bara looses an arrow with lethal effect. Another hound bites the dust (pun intended).

Ilsa now has the killing rage and with her bastard sword, removes the hound’s head with one mighty swing. The hounds are down to one and things are looking up for the Compagnye.

The final hound attacks Hugh Pugh. As it pounces on Hugh, Thorvald hits it with a well-aimed shot from his sling and the hound is stunned.

Tiffany reaches the loot and is disappointed to find a load of old sacks of grain. Probably only worth one gold mark, back at the market. She had so hoped for a magical item to enhance her powers.

Ilsa lets out a triumphant whoop and looks around to see how the rest of the Compagnye is faring.

Taking advantage of the hound’s hesitation, due to being stunned, Hugh makes a shrewd stroke with his short sword and the last hound is down, blood pouring from its throat.

As the Compagnye pauses to draw breath and take stock, the denouement of the encounter is revealed. Lew is down but it transpires that he has only been knocked out. To the relief of Hugh, he starts to come round, a lump the size of an ostrich egg, appearing on his head. Steam from the still warm corpses of the hounds rises slowly into the dawn air as their blood congeals on the dewy grass.

After a careful search of the lair and its environs, a bag of tools worth about one gold mark was found. Suddenly, poking about in a hole in the stones, Bara gave a cry of triumph, a suit of fine partial armour. Something worth having at last. Dropping his light armour to the floor, he donned the fine armour in seconds. He suggested to the unarmoured Mystic, Tiffany that it might be a cunning plan if she took possession of his discarded armour. Tiffany concurred but decided to give the light armour a good wash in the Piddle before wearing it. In the heat of battle, who knows what fluids may have been discharged by the druidic archer?

Having taken a short rest and shared a bottle of Red Duck, the Compagnye made their preparations to return to Fiddling-cum-Nicely. A proper celebration was in the offing, upon their return to the Pilchard Inne. This would be financed by a quick visit to Sir Frippary Rumination to collect the promised gold.

A good first outing for the Compagnye in Defnascir.

As Doug has shown, this game was played online with two cameras so that he could keep in close touch with the action. I have to say that we had a great time. The Master-at-Armes plan worked well. In the first turn or two, I think we were somewhat concerned as we seemed unable to kill any hounds. However, the ranged weapons then found their mark and things took an upturn. I think I forgot to use my +1 bonus against toughness for the bastard sword, so that might have helped earlier on. As I say, bags of fun and Doug’s character Bara got to level up. Our third member, Vagabond was on a secret mission crossing the Scorchio Sea, heading for Jhamjarhi. No more can be said of this at present.

Pip, pip for now…

An amazing tale of daring do, the opening shot of the Dust Hounds is quite amazing. Was this your brother Rembrandt Snapcases work, seems like he's been having the bad dreams again. You'd better up his dosage of poppy juice.

I'm very sorry to see all this happening while I'm on a secret mission and not able to take part in the frivolity but it's gratifying to note 3 dead hounds at Thorvalds feet. The man is a monster killing machine and modest enough to let others partake in his victories, the mark of a true gentleman.

Well done Bara although is sounds as if a little more time at the butts and less in Madame Genuflection's school for Wayward Girl's wouldn't go amiss. Ilsa  and Tiffany's story arc might end up with an X certificate which should make things even more interesting than they currently are.

Looking forward to the next installment of this gripping tale with bated breath.

Many thanks all, for your kind comments. As Plynkes says, it really is a joy to play this campaign. That first game could have been lost quite quickly, so there was a fair bit of tension in the opening turns. We only played four turns, as it turned out.

We need to do the preparation stage of campaign turn two and then we have a contract to enter a monster lair, which will be our game this Wednesday.

Looking through the Creatures Most Vile chapter, I'm going to need some individual monsters, so I've dusted off a few big boys!

Well, what a game we had! I was pleasantly amazed at what an immersive experience it was, playing via video link. The credit goes to Martin (Mad Lord Snapcase) for setting up the visuals and investing in a rather cool microphone - the whole set-up worked more or less seamlessly.

Reading his excellent AAR above had me reliving the game; both the commentary and numerous photos are splendid. And the diary is an inspired addition to the recording of the campaign - I loved it, even though it was rude about Bara’s pithy, incisive and altogether brilliant pre-battle team-talk.

The photo of some of our potential enemies is a bit of a worry. Some serious planning is needed and we have to think carefully about investing some of our meagre store of gold in some better weapons, methinks.

Looking forward to Exeter. Will you be wearing your customary mankini?

Of course, the fluorescent green one, Old Scrotum (the wrinkled and ancient Snapcase family retainer) is ironing it ready, as we speak.

Yes, I think it's fingers-crossed on this one!   :o

Indeed - I’m stroking my chin in a thoughtful way at the moment……

This sounds like we are getting another masterful master plan from the Master-at-Armes. He is a very masterly man, indeed!   ;)

I was lucky to find a photo of you from a few years ago, when you preferred fluorescent pink ones and a closer shave...  lol

Ah, those were the days! I could carry off the look then. Miss Spankhurst (the Snapcase Hall housekeeper) now has to fit a constraining girdle under the mankini, as time has enlarged the Snapcase form.

Loving the diaries - although Bara would not appreciate the somewhat disrespectful references. It is true, though, that his distinguished head is abuzz with plans to meet the foe.

The intrepid Compagnye arrives in Lower Straneing, to view a rather bucolic scene. Some of the local yokels have gathered outside the Mottled Earwig, to discuss the aberration. Opinions are divided as to what the monster actually is. Old Jem Custard (with the blue bottle) has seen a two-headed ogre, but no-one else believes the village drunk!

A view of the location.

The scenario needs three Curious Location Markers, shown here as a scroll, a book and a key. The scout (see scenario) will start at the hen house. The entry point for the rest of the Compagnye will be the scrying pool (blue thing, bottom right).

The party pause for refreshment in the Mottled Earwig, after the long walk.

Jerkin Cocklecarrot (the landlord) and his wife  Snorabella, bring forth the foaming tankards. The Compagnye proceeds to stiffen the sinews and summon up the blood. Bara appears distracted, probably starting to work out his master plan. Or maybe it's wind, that Olde Borborygmus ale being served by Jerkin, is a powerful brew!

First look at the scenery for my two colleagues. Tomorrow sees the start of our on-line game in Campaign Turn 2.

This is going to be GOOD…..! Can’t wait ‘til tomorrow’s game. Great scene setting, Martin - giving the encounter so much more meaning than a one-off game.

I shall now study the field before descending from a metaphorical Mount Olympus to reveal a master plan.

The first part of the Monster Lair scenario needs a scout, whose task it is, to find the monster. In our case, a two-headed ogre, named Beebleprod. The Compagnye elected Hugh Pugh for this dangerous mission. Hugh climbed over the wall of the pigsty and out into the moorland behind the inne.

Hugh, with his goldfish-like attention span, wanders off, something catching his eye. It appears to be some rather giant footprints in a muddy puddle.

Turning in the direction of the prints, Hugh sees a rocky outcrop and bimbles over for a look-see.

As he rounds the corner of the outcrop, he is startled to see the awakening form of a two-headed ogre! Hugh has disturbed his afternoon nap and the ogre is not at all happy.

Frozen to the spot with terror, Hugh can only watch as the ogre lumbers towards him. He does manage to make an ejaculation; “F**k me, it’s a two-headed ogre!”, he screams.

By sheer luck, the rest of the Compagnye hear Hugh’s plaintive cries and come scrambling over the wall of the pigsty. Lew is looking particularly concerned, as his twin brother sounds to be in a bit of bother.

Hugh comes to his senses and has it away, on his toes. At least he can outrun the ogre. With a great roar, Beebleprod the Ogre raises his spiked club threateningly and pursues Hugh at the best speed he can make.

The Compagnye align themselves ready for battle. Following Bara’s master plan, the idea is to use ranged weapons to bring down the monster. Tiffany readies a spell.

There is a sound of panic from the nearby inne as the locals, seeing the ogre, decide that a strategic withdrawal at this point, is their best option. Accordingly, a mad dash is made away from the frightening events, about to unfold.

Tiffany casts her ‘Mark’ spell, so that the Compagnye can see the ogre clearly, even at this distance. Thorvald moves to get in range with his sling, takes aim but with the movement and the ogre being half-hidden behind another rocky outcrop, his stone goes wide of the mark. Bara and Ilsa both draw and aim with their bows. Unfortunately, although the spell is making their aim easier, the outcrop covering the ogre causes them to both miss. Bara starts to mumble about his ‘moist string’.

Tiffany ensures that her spell is still effective. As the ogre lumbers into the open, Lew runs forward to cover his brother, Hugh. This also puts him in range with his sling. He tries a shot, hits but the stone merely glances off the ogre’s helmet. Thorvald also unleashes a stone from his sling and hits Beebleprod, square on the chin (the ogre can take three wounds and this is the first of them). Ilsa and Bara also loose arrows from their bows. Both are hits, but again, they just bounce off, this ogre is tough!

Angered now, beyond belief, the ogre clumps towards the Pugh twins. Tiffany again reinforces her ‘Mark’ spell. Lew has to choose between a hasty exit, or getting another shot off before the ogre is upon him and his brother. Brave Lew chooses to stand and lets fly with all his might. The range is short and with a wild cheer, the Compagnye see Lew’s stone fly straight and true, through Beebleprod’s visor and directly into one of his four eyes (another wound and the ogre can only take one more). Thorvald tries another shot with his sling, but misses. Bara and Ilsa again loose arrows towards the ogre. Both are hits, but again, would you believe it, both arrows fail to penetrate the toughness of the ogre’s flesh.

Once again, Tiffany manages to reinforce her spell and Beebleprod is still marked for ranged weapons. Ilsa, Bara and Thorvald all take aim and loose their missiles. The Compagnye watches in disbelief as all three hit the ogre’s body, but again fail to penetrate the flesh. What is it going to take to down this monster? With one mighty swing of his club, the ogre attacks Hugh and connects with his head. Hugh drops to the ground, hors de combat. Lew, with a cry of rage, seeing his brother downed, lets fly again with his sling. The stone bounces harmlessly off the ogre’s belly.

Bara nocks and looses another arrow, only to see it bounce off the ogre, the ricochet just missing Lew as he waits for that monstrous club to descend upon his own bonce. Surely, nothing can save him now? Ilsa concentrates all her martial arts training in Déjà Fu, imbues her arrow with all her spirit and releases her shaft. The arrow pierces an eye in the unwounded head, Beebleprod stumbles and with a great moan and a mighty crash, falls to the ground.

The silence is sudden after the tumult of the combat. Lew approaches the fallen ogre to ensure that he is, indeed, dead. Seeing that it is so, he rushes to tend to his fallen brother.

The Compagnye move forward to see if there is anything they can do for the prostrate Hugh. They leave the corpse of the downed ogre to rot in the fields.

They carry the body of Hugh Pugh back to the Mottled Earwig. Hugh is still breathing. As the heroes celebrate their triumph with more Olde Borborygmus ale, Lew tends to his brother and Hugh slowly comes round. It appears he was merely knocked out. Although his head aches like thunder, he will recover, thanks to a very thick skull.

Our second contract completed in campaign turn two. Doug’s master plan did work, but we had a lot of trouble penetrating the Toughness of an ogre, which was set at 5. We hit constantly, due to the Mark spell, we overcame the armour stat of 2, but constantly failed to throw the necessary 6 to overcome toughness. So, once again, we had a few sphincter-tightening moments, but came through virtually unscathed. Another highly enjoyable game. We are off to count our gold and prepare for next week, where we may decide to visit an unexplored location.

Another pertinent extract from the ancient annals, discovered at Snapcase Hall.

Martin - a great report doing full justice (and then some) to our latest epic. As I said earlier, brilliant scene setting, the locals at the Mottled Earwig adding a lot of character to the proceedings. A splendid set of photos as well - I love the locals making their tactical withdrawal.

As to the game itself, once again the tech worked beautifully and I felt part of a proper game despite being 70 odd miles away. The ogre was pretty tough although naturally fell victim to the master-plan eventually. And we picked up some useful bits and bobs after - I’m sure Ilsa will be delighted with her new long bow and Bara will be an even greater archer now he has the necessary tools to make some really top-notch arrows.

And to round it off, another captivating entry in Ilsa’s diary. What a saucy little minx she is, to be sure.

So, on to the next adventure although before that, I look forward to crunching over yesterday’s game, with  a cup of lukewarm tea at the Exeter show on Saturday.

Many thanks all, for your very kind comments and interest. We are running through the Preparation Stage of Campaign Turn 3 now, by e-mail. Currently not sure where are heading in this turn yet.

After a night at the Pink Pelican in Fiddling-cum-Nicely celebrating the demise of Bebbleprod the Two-Headed Ogre, we have acquired a new Follower. A Hopeful Youth by the name of Barney McGrew. We stumbled out of the inne the next morning, blinking into the sunshine and got the local iconographer, Otto Chriek, to produce an iconograph of our somewhat hung-over Compagnye.

Barney McGrew is second in from the left. Hugh Pugh is looking sulky after we made him wash his hair, it positively stank after the eggs in it went rotten!

That was one difficult contract! My party's first contract was to raid a bandit camp, and now we're looking for an artifact. No ogres there!

All I see to overcome Toughness is the Fight Furiously and Bastard Sword. I have an Ogre rampaging in a Hamlet, and I'm going to let it burn! :D Hamlet's don't have a Town Watch you can join to avoid upkeep, so you have to pay upkeep when you're in a Hamlet. The party needed a second ranged weapon and a messenger stole some of our gold, earlier so we don't exactly have the funds to buy four Bastard Swords. We have a halfling, so we actually make some gold hunting game in Camp, so I'd rather them hunting and foraging than saving the (known) world...!

If you’re fighting one opponent, such as an ogre, having a mystic casting "mark" on it gives a +1 to anyone shooting at it in that turn. As you’ve only got the ogre to shoot ant, you can concentrate all missile weapons against it so all shooters get the bonus. And I do recommend buying ranged weapons before bastard swords. A sling is only 2 gold and a self-bow 5.

Incidentally, you can’t use Fighting Furiously against an opponent with the Counterattack ability which the ogre does have.

This week’s encounter was a camp Raid scenario. Our opponents were a Desperate Mob, whose camp I set up in the centre of the playing area. The enemy figures were set up as per the diagram, although it was actually flipped, horizontally and we started on the right-hand side.

Three enemies in camp…

…and four enemies deployed to the west.

The Desperate Mob were a little low on numbers. I had thrown double three, plus three and then one more as we were a party of seven. They narrowly missed out on having an officer/sergeant. So, it was seven against seven. Frankie, the Mad Axeman having disposed of an eighth man before the battle. Frankie said he was always whingeing and he couldn’t listen to it anymore!

We could come onto the board anywhere between the rock to the right and the top of the ridge in the centre, 1” in from the edge. Bara Brith ap Cyffylliog, our Master-at-Armes and Master Strategos, opted for a stealthy entry along the top of the ridge line.

The Compagnye used the sneak move and by keeping more than 12” from the camp, we were able to take up a very favourable position, dominating the high ground.

At this point, the Compagnye were spotted by a sharp-eyed enemy and the batting was opened.

Bara loosed the first arrow. His range has now been extended, due to his ability to produce fine quality arrows. His black-fletched clothyard arrow, arrived in the throat of an enemy slinger in the camp, like a bolt from the blue! The first enemy was down, in the first shot. A sign of things to come.

Ilsa tried a long shot with her longbow, but failed to hit.

Tiffany cast her ‘Mark’ spell on the enemy in camp with the horned helm and succeeded in marking him out to the members of the Compagnye with ranged weapons.

Shooting into the camp, we had to be very careful. We had detected a tied victim, atop some sort of pyre and were desirous of saving the poor creature’s life.

The enemy advanced, using whatever cover was available.

Hugh, having his target marked for him, by Tiffany, loosed an arrow, which glanced off the horned helm, stunning the wearer. Lew, seeing the enemy pause, let fly with his sling and succeeded in killing the foe. Thorvald used his sling, the Scot Strap of Desire (it's actually called the J*ck Strap of Desire but it appears I'm not allowed to type J*ck!), as he has named it, but missed the other foe, crouching behind the wall.

Bara sees the enemies’ second slinger advancing in the cover of the stone wall, surrounding the camp. He takes an aimed shot, but the arrow hits the wall and skitters away. Ilsa stiffens her sinews, summons up the blood and redeems her first miss. The slinger is down with an arrow in the eye. The desperate mob are in trouble, as Ilsa shouts her ululating battle-cry.

The mob, what is left of them, advance to contact.

The marker token on the left indicates how far up the crag, the mobster has climbed.

Hugh Pugh draws his bowstring back and puts an arrow into the heart of the mobster who is heading straight for him. Another one down.

Lew turns to his right, catching a flicker of movement. The foeman with the warhammer has reached the ridge and is bearing down on him. Desperately, Lew uses his sling, but in the panic of the moment, he misses.

Calmly, Thorvald steps out from behind Lew and unleashes the Scot (J*ck) Strap of Desire. It’s hardly what the mobster desires though, as the missile hits him directly between the eyes and another enemy is down. Falling back down the crag, he tumbles to his doom.

Seeing that five of their number have been cut down by the mercenary Compagnye, the remaining two beat a hasty retreat, leaving the Compagnye, holding the field.

Victorious, we moved into the camp, searching for anything useful or valuable. We found a sack in one of the tents, which turned out to contain some throwing knives which we gave to Barney McGrew, to celebrate him surviving his first battle (even if he didn’t do anything, he stood firm).

Bara and Ilsa rushed to untie the captive. Luckily, she was still alive, although it might be a short while before she is able to relate her story.

That was Campaign Turn 3, a fairly short encounter. We felt a little guilty at the ease with which we had disposed of our foes. However, they were part of the three threats we face in our campaign. Using some of our Adventure Points, we reduced the threat of the Ruin Within, from 6 down to 5. Our first encounter with one of our threats.

There will follow a campaign diary entry to relate the story of the captive. We used one of our Story Points to bring her into the scenario.

Altogether, a fun encounter, even if we didn’t get to go hand-to-hand with the enemy.

A good account and excellent photos again - I love the sequence recording the descent of the baddie down the cliff after he was disposed of by Thorvald’s mighty you-know-what strap of desire.

So far, our emphasis on ranged weapons has meant we have had relatively easy victories. How long will this last, one wonders?

Let us not forget that the victim in the barrel was a case of mobsters falling out. He was a mobster brutally killed by another mobster, pre-battle. Nothing to do with us, guv  :D

jockstrap  of Desire seems a strange thing to censor but who am I  to question the things we canot do or say anymore.

The naming of the sling is a long and convoluted story, which will be written down on parchment, rather than passed on by word of mouth, from one Skald to another as soon as I can find time.

An excellently told story my good Lord, we seemed to have adopted the tactic of " If it moves shoot it until it doesn't move. Then shoot it again." Seems to work really well.

Great scenery and I'm curious about the  person on top of the stack of kindling and what story points have to do with anything. Imsure it will become clear in due course.

Douggers, LouieN, blacksoilbill and Vaggers, many thanks for taking the time to comment.

It appears that you can write jockstrap (apparently, not allowed a capital J! The thick plottens!) of Desire (but not Scot J*ck Strap of Desire, as is its proper name). Still, either way, I look forward to the story behind this rather unusually named sling!

I have sent Old Scrotum (the wrinkled and ancient Snapcase family retainer) up to the attic in the east-wing of Snapcase Hall. He has instructions to fetch down the next packet of oil-skin wrapped annals of this ancient mercenary Compagnye. I feel it in my water, that the next packet will reveal the mystery of the unfortunate young lady on the pyre. A facsimile of the relevant pages will be posted here when Old Scrotum returns. I while away the hours, awaiting his return, with appropriate consumption of vintage port.

While consuming said vintage port of course.

Some rather long and meandering diary entries now, I'm afraid. This thread serves as our campaign log for the three players. There was no battle between turn 4 and turn 7 (where todays battle starts). There were however, many campaign activities carried out and a move across the main island of Defnascir, as the map shows.

Old Scrotum eventually returns with the next packet of Ye Annals of Ye Compagnye. Unfortunately, too much port has been consumed in the meantime and I fall asleep reading it. As indeed, you might!

...and ready for this afternoon's encounter between Hissing Sid and the Compagnye, the board layout, high in the Creamonfurst Mountains.

Brilliant work on the diary. All those die rolls, charts, flicking backwards and forwards in the rules etc are brought to life and given real meaning.

And now, to Hissing Sid. I have a master-plan.

You're doing a really good job with updating the diary, sounds like there's a bucket load of work involved in running the campaign and the diary makes it all comprehensible as well as weaving a compelling tale.

Everyone seems to have had time to train but not on the same day, is that because there's some limiting factor or were Thorvald and Tiffany too hung over to train when Bara and Ilsa did their training?

Regarding the Calvados, I wonder if the Appleblossom farm might distill it from their apple harvest as well as making cider,  if so, could we persuade them to let us have a few bottles after rescuing Tully?

Looking forward to reading about the encounter with Hissing Sid, the Snow Troll from upp north.

The scenario required three Curious Location Markers. In order to ensure some randomness in the layout, I threw a D10 to select three tiles and then threw a D12 twice to give eastings and northings in that tile. This resulted in these three locations.

Hissing Sid, the Sibilant Troll could be in any of these locations.

Doug did not know these locations and he controlled the movements of Barney McGrew, our chosen scout.

Barney bravely set off on his scouting mission, leaving a marker behind for the rest of the Compagnye to enter, when the troll was located.

Doug sent Barney northwards towards the log bridge across the river. Maybe the bridge was troll-made?

A dice throw brought the first of the Curious Location Markers into Barney’s eye line.

Another dice throw and Hissing Sid suddenly appeared, making low hissing sounds, he approached Barney who seemed, momentarily to be rooted to the spot in sheer terror!

Barney, coming to his senses, ran for his life and soon outpaced the lumbering troll.

The rest of the Compagnye make their way, at speed onto the snowy wastes of the Creamonfurst Mountains. Tiffany makes for a rocky outcrop and casts her Mark spell successfully on Sid.

Bara looses an arrow, as does Ilsa and both miss. Barney, having outdistanced the troll, turned, stood his ground, let fly with his new sling and yes, you guessed, he missed.

Thorvald and Lew Pugh divert into the nearby snow-covered pines with a view to outflanking the huge troll.

Meanwhile, Hugh Pugh uses his bow, but again to no avail.

We gave Sid a chance to smell the two adventurers in the trees, even though he could not see them. Doug said, “one chance in six, he’ll sniff them out” and I duly threw a six, Sid knew they were there.

At this point however, Barney having stood his ground was in closer range with his sling. He let fly another stone and hit Sid, right between the eyes. Our new recruit was proving to be something of an asset. It was a critical hit and Sid’ monster points of five were reduced to three.

Lew with his sling and Thorvald with the J*ck Strap of Desire, both let fly at Sid as he passed their hiding place. Lew hit and dropped another point off of Sid. Thorvald’s hit could not penetrate the tough hide of the troll.

Sid, angered by Barney’s well-place shot, stomped on towards his antagonist, presumably with the aim of crushing him into the ground. Ilsa lets fly a well-timed arrow and Sid’s points are down to one. Bara goes to shoot and throws a one, he’s out of arrows!

Sid manages to stun and wound Barney with his massive club and Barney is forced backwards.

Hugh manages a hit this time with his bow and Hissing Sid, with a great groan, collapses into the snow at Barney’s feet, to the great relief of all. After Barney’s brave stand, we would have been sad to see him stomped on by the furious troll.

The Compagnye reassemble and gaze upon the fallen gargantuan.

The Compagnye are delighted to find a fine warhammer and shield plus a strange map in the possession of the defeated troll.

After a brief pause to ensure that Barney was not going to bleed to death, the Compagnye moved to cross a high mountain pass on their route back to Toastrack Manor. Barney was going to need at least a week to recover from that blow and they intended to leave Barney to the gentle ministrations of Sir Grimsdyke Toastrack’s housekeeper.

You've taken some stunning photographs of the action, they're really good, the scenery is magnificent and the background complements it perfectly.

Thorvald obviously didn't let you in on his plan. Clunge Magnet is an old Yorkshire term for Ogre Attractor. His plan was to distract Hissing Sid so that the shooter boys from the gang of Seven would have plenty of time to shoot him. Of course he didn't recon on the key shooter boy leaving his arrows behind. Such are the best laid plans torn to shreds on contact with the enemy.

Looking forward to the next installment of this adventure.
Cheers

Master-plan addendum, sub-section 3. From time-to-time, it’s recommended that the key members of a warband improvise a crisis so that the less accomplished members (eg flamboyant, scent-wearing bards) learn how to stand on their own two feet. Elementary leadership stuff.

I never thought of that!

Bara and Thorvald, the misplaced quiver and the foetid eau de cologne can only be redeemed by valiant action as we set out to explore an old mine.

After camping overnight at the mine entrance, a strange but moving ceremony is enacted by the Compagnye members. During their last engagement with Hissing Sid, they decided to promote Hugh Pugh for services above and beyond, to the rank of Hero from his previous rank as Follower.

The Compagnye heroes had a whip-round and purchased some proper adventuring clothes for Hugh. Here we see the transformation from zero to hero!

And what a night that was - Hew took the customary initiation ceremony very well, I thought, although I noticed Tiffany looking somewhat embarrassed (unlike Ilsa - ‘nuff said).

> Everyone seems to have had time to train but not on the same day, is that because there's some limiting factor or were Thorvald and Tiffany too hung over to train when Bara and Ilsa did their training?

Well, there is a Campaign Action (sp) where *one* of your characters Trains and gains an XP point -- while the others do nothing. Officially, the character doesn't gain abilities unless it's the Resolution stage after a battle encounter, but I find that that's too much bookkeeping. (Could limit Training by saying a character cannot gain an XP that would gain anything.)

I love those "steps" in the winter mountain pass! Looking forward to seeing the next combat.

BTW, I like "too hung over to train" as an excuse, so asked ChatGPT to make a table of random excuses... :D

Here's a table of random excuses why your D&D character didn't train:

1. "I accidentally stumbled upon a secret library filled with ancient tomes and got lost in reading."
2. "A mischievous imp stole all my training equipment and hid it in different dimensions."
3. "I got caught up in an epic tavern brawl and spent the entire week recovering from the injuries."
4. "A powerful wizard cursed me with a temporary loss of my magical abilities, making training impossible."
5. "I was captured by a group of bandits and had to use all my skills to escape, leaving no time for training."
6. "An enchanted artifact transported me to a different realm where time flows differently, and when I returned, only a day had passed for me."
7. "I discovered a hidden underground city and spent the week exploring its vast wonders."
8. "A friendly druid asked for my help in protecting an endangered species, and we spent days tracking and observing them."
9. "I was invited to participate in a prestigious tournament, but I had to focus on preparing for the competition instead of training."
10. "A mysterious illness affected the entire region, and I volunteered my time to help the sick and find a cure."

Feel free to roll a dice or choose a number to select a random excuse for your D&D character!

EDIT: Added a "ChatGPT: Campaign Activities Fluff Text" file to the 5L FB group! Look in the Media files section.

Our Risk Assessment was that cucumbers and Bara were possibly the most dangerous combination known to man, the noxious gases resulting, possibly causing death, or serious disruption to the nasal passages at the very least!

Hence, the original company banner, carried into many a battle, when the Compagnye was larger than it is now:

Trouble in the Lady Garden

This is our first delve in our 5LftB campaign. The scenario required Exploration Markers equal to the number in the warband. Seven markers were duly placed.

The enemy on this occasion were skeletons.

While the curses and injustices of the world are quite capable of animating the undead, these defenders seem to have been created specifically for the purpose.

I had thrown for nine skeletons and then the roll on the leader chart added a Sergeant, a skeleton with +1 toughness.

These were set out in patrolling groups of 3 with the Sergeant patrolling on his own. These were placed in the mine.

At the time of writing the game is not yet over. We played for four hours online, yesterday and had a great time. We should complete this next week. As a consequence of a long game and lots of photos, the AAR will come in chapters. To add some difficulty to the game, I placed everything and then gave Doug the job of directing movements. He had not seen the board previously and I covered it with sheets of A4 paper in order to reveal one room at a time.

The party was split into two, as there were two entrances to Lady Garden’s Mine.

Into the front seam went Ilsa von Spanckwürst, Tiffany Aching, Lew Pugh and Barney McGrew.

Whilst Thorvald the Skald, Hugh Pugh and Bara Brith ap Cyffylliog took advantage of the back passage.

Hugh Pugh, in his new gear, volunteered to scout.

They came across the first of the Exploration Markers in their first room.

Ilsa and party penetrated into the gloomy depths, but initially, no results.

To be continued…

Yes - been a cracking game so far. The concealing of the mine’s layout made it so much more interesting than having everything in plain view. Obviously Snapcase knew where everything was but all the movement directions were handed to me who, as usual, knew nothing! It was very like the fondly remembered D&D games of 40+ years ago; behind every corner could be lurking something very nasty.

It must also be emphasised that this was a game played via Google Meet. It has worked much better than I anticipated - it feels like playing in a face-to-face, or at least damn near it. A very successful experiment and a 5 Leagues campaign has been an excellent vehicle for it.

As always, a massive ‘thank you’ to His Lordship for providing very special scenery, painting figures especially for the game, sorting the tech, taking the photos, keeping the records, doing the AAR - all this whilst standing on one leg, dressed in a tutu (probably).

Looking forward to completing the game next week.

Blimey Snappers your mine is a work of art. I know I've seen it in the flesh but I was well oiled at the time and you kept most of it hidden with sheets of paper.

I'll refrain from mentioning the rather common reference to Bara going up the back passage, especially as Thorvald was with him, standards man, standards.

How well does not knowing the layout affect the "sneaking around" bit of the site, where you avoid setting off all the alarms?

Good luck on the adventure! The limited movement and range (?) in delves keeps me away from them! (:

ced1106, blacksoilbill and syrinx0, many thanks for your kind comments. Here are a few photos of the mine under construction.

The moulded mine sections are from Ainsty Castings, the Yakkum Mines range. When I put in a second big order, they very kindly sent me some free pieces with the order. I started building it for the Old West but of course it can fit many genres, even I suppose, Scooby-Doo!

The outer walls are tree bark, the gaps between tunnels and rooms are filled by polystyrene. The small rocks are aquarium gravel. All sprayed black, then dry-brushed. To be honest, there is a bit more painting to do. It's all glued to a 4' x 2' MDF board with some bracing underneath.

Hugh begins to search the room and sets off an alarm. The marker turned out to be a trap and alerts the guards for some distance.

The three alerted skeletons (who entered from the adjoining room) were disposed of after a fierce fight.

Ilsa and party continue to explore the dark and gloomy mine tunnels…

Doug did not have this view as I used two cameras to track the two parties. It shows the relative locations of the two parties as they penetrate deeper into the Lady Garden Mine.

Ilsa and fellow adventurers move doggedly forward, ever deeper into the dank and dripping tunnels. The arrows on the concealing papers show Doug the possible routes forward.

Three skeletons guarding an exploration marker are alerted to Ilsa’s presence as she moves into their field of vision.

Ilsa’s compatriots struggle to keep up with her as she sets a cracking pace, having sighted the enemy!

Meanwhile, the other party move cautiously into the next room. In the Stygian gloom, Thorvald discerns a marker on the floor and moves forward to investigate. Bara and Hugh move forward. The marker turns out to be a trap and Thorvald is wounded by an iron dart, which hits him in the chest. By a stroke of good fortune, he stumbles into a dark corner and discovers a very fine crossbow. Every cloud etc. he thinks to himself.

Ilsa takes out the first skeleton with a well-aimed shot from her longbow. The two remaining skeletons charge and with her loud and frightening ululating war cry, Ilsa charges to meet them in hand-to-hand combat.

In a closely fought melee, Ilsa emerges as the victor. She steps over a sea of broken bones to investigate the marker the skeletons were guarding.

Unfortunately, it’s an ambush. Ilsa hears the distinctive sound of crepitation and another skeleton appears.

To be continued…

Great photos, Martin - they certainly capture the breathless dash-and-dammit approach of fearless adventurers like wot we are. And they show off your brilliant scenery. I hadn’t realised until I saw your WIP photos above, how much work you had to do on them.

Those old skellies were a lot harder to subdue than most of the opponents we’ve met so far in our rampage through Defnascir. A very enjoyable game.

Is that the undulating war cry when she sings "la la, la la.....la la, la la.....la la, la la" up and down the scales and her enemies run away fearing the madness might be contagious?  Or is it a different one.

Another great installment My Lord well done. It's good to be able to keep up with the story from an unbiased view point. I'm a bit surprised that an iron dart was able to penetrate Thorvalds chest. As a man of steel I would expect the dart to have been deflected, it must have been flung by an infernally strong device.

All the bits and pieces add to the atmosphere of the pictures but I'm curious, in the 3rd picture down, what are the black and white pebbles on the barrel in the bottom left.

As they say "Carry on at your Convenience"
Cheers

The adventurers have disturbed a game of Tafl. I don't think skellies play Tafl, so some other entity must have been disturbed when yon mob barged in.

Cheers, I  obviously had to look up Tafl, never heard of it in the pubs round where I live. Darts, domino's and crib are the order of the day.

I know you sling balls down alleyways in your pubs but I think that sort of game would get out of hand in a less civilised part of the country.

Oddly enough, we have been playing Pétanque recently. That game, of course, requires bigger balls!

Trouble in the Lady Garden (Part the Last)

Hugh investigates another marker, but it’s an ambush.

Hugh battles bravely, but the skeleton is too tough and Hugh is knocked to the ground, unconscious.

Bara kills the skeleton with the mighty warhammer, Forteekay. Thorvald, having pulled the iron dart from his chest, rejoins his comrades.

Ilsa disposes of a skeleton with her longbow.

The Compagnye reforms, sadly, minus Hugh. Tiffany uses her heal spell on Thorvald. Barney sees a marker and has a look. He discovers some Springwind berries, a coil of rope and a large quiver. A useful find.

Bara advances towards another marker and finds three skeletons guarding it. He strikes down the first one with a mighty blow of Forteekay, but the second skeleton dodges in under his guard and stuns him. Ilsa skewers the skeleton with an arrow from her longbow and Thorvald, with his J*ck Strap of Desire, finished the third skeleton.

The Compagnye splits again to explore two adjacent tunnels. Lew Pugh sights some skeletons ahead, are they never-ending?

Bara wounds the first one with an arrow. Lew misses with his sling and the skeletons charge. There’s only room to fight two abreast in this tunnel. Lew is wounded and stunned in the melee but manages to kill a skeleton. Bara shoots and wounds another skeleton and Lew disposes of it. The last skeleton, stunned by an arrow from Bara, charges Lew and is cut down.

Meanwhile, Ilsa has found another skeleton, looses an arrow and then charges in for the kill. This was the skeleton leader (just tougher than the others) but he went down like a sack of bones to Ilsa’s bastard sword.

Thanks the gods, that is the last skeleton, the upper level of the delve into the Lady Garden Mine has been cleared. The Compagnye reassembles to take stock. At that moment, a dazed Hugh Pugh stumbles in. It appears that in the melee where he hit the deck, his head had come into violent contact with his new shield. No permanent damage to his head, but the shield is not looking so good!

A longer game than normal, this one, with skeletons popping up all over the place. Good fun though and we need to clear the lower level of the Lady Garden Mine, yet. Who knows what horrors await us in the lower levels?

Hmm - another entertaining, if somewhat questionable, diary entry from Ilsa. Other members of the fabled Compagnye seem to have relied on their recollections being passed to their heirs and successors by word of mouth. This rich oral tradition has diverged from these diary accounts on more than one occasion. It would be a valuable contribution to the historical record if a hitherto unknown written record from another of the Compagnye members should come to light. Failing that, perhaps a descendant of one of those heroes may feel minded to commit to paper the recollections of their ancestor which have been faithfully passed on over the centuries. On the other hand, maybe these descendants just couldn’t be bothered…..

Congrats! Any thoughts on the upgraded leader models for enemies? I've been backing Bones I-IV, so have elite units (need them for Gloomhaven) but wasn't sure if I overlooked something. And are skellies harder in 5L than other games? Seems like they're going to be handful if they can fight alone against a warparty! And how did the
"hidden setup" go? Did it make skulking around avoiding the unalerted patrols harder / alert the enemies more quickly than in a regularl 5L game?

Good luck on the next level!

Another great installment and I'm looking forward to seeing this in the flesh, well over the internet at least. You surprise me though, at the reference to Bickering Bara, he's in his garden shed when these games are taking place, on his own, who does he find to bicker with? Himself!  ;)

Ps, I'm looking forward to hearing Ilsa's La la war cry, I  hope you have it perfected by now as she seems to spend most of the action charging into battle singing her warcry.

They normally have a toughness of 4, so pretty tough. The problem we had, was that more and more of them, kept appearing.

It did make it harder initially, but I think the difficult part was that range was restricted to 8". Our tactic in open terrain was to start shooting at long range. You can't do that in a delve.

The Compagnye returns to the Lady Garden Mine. This time, a lower level and who knows what they might meet?

Thorvald, Hugh and Bara are the first to encounter a foe…and it’s rats! We hate rats!

Hugh misses whilst Bara wounds a rat. The rats charge.

One party is top, left of centre. The other party is bottom right.

A fierce melee ensues. Thorvald and his rat are both forced backwards, Hugh backs off from his rat and Bara kills his first one.

The rats disposed of, the party advance into the depths of the gloomy mine.

Finding a manhole cover, they decide to see what lies beneath. Let’s hope this is a wise decision.

Meanwhile, the other party continues to explore the dank lower levels.

Amidst the tenebrious dark, Hugh finds a trapdoor above their heads and pushes up into…the secret treasure chamber.

We used one of our Story Points here. This explained the discovery of the secret chamber and we decided it meant one roll on the Loot Table. We found an improved bastard sword, which turned out to be balanced, a useful find.

The other party passed close by but unaware of the important find.

Ilsa pressed on ahead, finding a marker. This turned out to be a stink-pot, causing an environmental hazard. Ilsa’s sense of smell might never be the same after setting off this trap.

Tiffany leads the party underground into the noxious deep and reemerges (like some French farce) into the same location as the other party. They compare notes and find they have cleared the lower level in record time.

Time to return to Toastrack Manor, in time for tea and stickies. But as they emerge from the crepuscular atramentousness of the mine, they encounter a young boy. Who is this mysterious stranger?

A short game this time, after we made three Exploration Markers and found a rather nice sword.

Douggers, Vaggers and Idle Doodler, many thanks.

A flying visit in advance of tomorrow’s game, to Djelibeen, a lively suburb of the harbour town of Djelibeybi. Foul Ole Ron, a member of the Canting Crew, has been forced to camp outside, on account of his noxious body odour. The begging is not going so well for Ron as the denizens of Djelibeen will not let him into the town. Loud mutterings of "Bugrit!" and "Millennium Hand and Shrimp", can be heard from his vicinity.

The local market in Djelibeen is thriving.

CMOT Dibbler is selling bloomers to Mrs. Cleethorpes. She’s proving difficult to sell to and Dibbler offers to throw in his trademark ‘sausage inna bun’ to sweeten the deal.

Azhural N'choate has chickens on offer today. Mrs. Protuberance is offering to trade for a jar of her homemade djinn.

…and so the scene is set for tomorrow’s attempt by the Compagnye to retrieve the Golden Jhamjarh of Sticky Gods, on behalf of His Holiness The Golden Shred. (Exciting news: Vagabond has returned from his secret mission abroad. All three Gentlemen of Much-Piddling are to take part in tomorrow’s game).

As a minimum in this game, we have to reveal at least three exploration markers. We have also been contracted to retrieve the Golden Jhamjarh of Sticky Gods. Two adventure points are on offer, if we Hold the Field.

There are 8 exploration markers on the table, cunningly numbered 1 to 8. When it is the enemy phase, any unaware patrols will head towards a randomly determined marker (by throwing a D8), by the shortest possible route. Due to the nature of this battle, the following restrictions apply; all base movements are reduced by1”, no one can dash and maximum range is 8”.

There are 4 patrols, 3 consisting of 3 Roving Fiends each and one patrol which is a Craven Hex-Chanter.

The art of cursing chants brings ill luck to those it targets. Hex-chanters slowly lose their Human form, changing shape into something altogether more grotesque, though few practitioners will survive the conclusion of their transformation.

Flocks of humanoid beasts with rudimentary intelligence, they live off carcasses and what they can kill with their clawed hands.

Once again, the Compagnye splits into two parties. Ilsa, Barney, Tiffany and Lew elect to enter behind the market stalls.

Whilst Cuthbert, Bara, Thorvald and Hugh enter further to the east.

It appears that our heroes to the west are knocking over market stalls. This was due to my inability to move the figures through the narrow gap. The Roving Fiend patrol which were guarding the central marker, start to move away. This is a lucky break for the Compagnye, as their Contract objective is the Golden Jhamjarh of Sticky Gods, the gold-coloured object on the roof of the building in the centre.

The Roving Fiends are seen crossing an alleyway, swiftly bows and slings are readied and both Bara and Thorvald kill a Fiend each. They cannot yet see the third, which is hidden by a building.

Meanwhile Ilsa, at an exploration marker, finds an icon. Later, this turned out to be rather valuable, selling for 8 gold marks.

Ilsa has a faster movement rate and the rest of her party are trying to keep up.

Cuthbert advances and makes his first kill, taking out the third Fiend.

We now get very lucky. All the enemy patrols, by a random dice throw, all move away form the Compagnye. The Sticky Gods are indeed shining on us today!

Ilsa and party move on to explore further, leaving chaos behind in the market.

The three surviving patrols, by a strange coincidence, head towards the same marker. It could have been much worse for us.

Ilsa finds another marker, but it is just an obstacle, nothing more.

The patrols reach their destination and throws are made to see where they go next.

Bara leads the other party up on the roof. The marker turns out to be a man-trap and Bara is pinned to it.

Hugh jumps over Bara, who is pinned and claims the Golden Jhamjarh of the Sticky Gods. Thorvald manages to free Bara (a successful Wits test).

One patrol of Fiends returns to another marker.

However, the Hex-Chanter and another patrol sight the Compagnye, at last.

With Bara limping his way down the steps and Hugh right behind him, clutching the sacred Jhamjarh, the Compagnye elect to make a swift exit from Djelibeen. We had located three markers and we had our objective. No need to push our luck.

The Hex-Chanter and Fiends are in hot pursuit…

But we have too much of a lead on them and exit Djelibeen at speed, scattering market stalls, left, right and centre!

A short but fun game and we were rather lucky. Very enjoyable and a pleasure to have the three Gentlemen of Much-Piddling back together again!

I forgot to add that the Hex-Chanter could turn into a Ravening Beast. This could have been a problem for us, but once again, luck prevailed and it didn't happen

When activated, the closest non-Hexed warband member within 15" is targeted, even if they are not in Line of Sight of the Hex-chanter. They must succeed on a 10+ [Devotion] test, or become Hexed. On a roll of a natural 12, the Hex-chanter is immediately transformed to Ravening Beast-form (from this encounter table), and recovers from any Wounds suffered.

While Hexed, all attacks against the character are counted as +1 / +1 damage, in place of their normal damage value. Attacks from Aberrations are not affected.

The hex lasts until the end of the battle or until the Hex-chanter is slain.

The Ravening Beast was waiting in the wings, but in the end, didn't even get a 'walk-on' part!

This could have gone so badly for The Compagnye, what with lots of roving fiends, the hex chanter/ravening beast and Vagabond playing his first game but it all went unusually smoothly, apart from my lad Bara getting temporarily stuck in a trap.

Top notch report and photos, Martin…..

Brilliant terrain but you've done a tremendous job bringing it alive with so many other bits and bobs, it looks really well lived in.

Well told tale of adventuring deering do, shame about the debacle in the market but I'm sure a couple of gold coins will assuage the merchants demands for your head in a basket.

It was great to actually be able to take part in one of the games, rather than just read about it. The tech works pretty well, all things considered but it's nice to see the pictures you've posted here,  they look superb.

Very interesting seeing a site battle in a marketplace, rather than underground! Did you use any rules for the "civilians"? Site battles are also interesting in that the enemies have three groups on the board, so you can "divide and conquer" if you do it right, and the terrain is in your favor. Fought some imps that way (their fault that their path was right towards us!), with one group of imps immediately at the start, and us with everyone with ranged weapons. We then set up ambush points on the map to take down each other group individually. I have some markers in the FB Fan media files, so you can use sexy marker names like Aleph, Beta, and Canae (ye olde Ogram alphabet) rather than Arabic numerals (although thematically, Arabic matches better. :D

Are those Mantic ghouls? Also interesting that you used the same models, but painted and posed them differently. I tried to do as little as possible. Boy, those two-part ghouls require putty for gap filling!

I also used them as cannibalistic fiends for an encounter. The encounter took place on a rivers, and I had to make up house rules for using a boat in the middle of a fight (proficiency check)! : https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/102943-five-leagues-from-the-borderlands-the-vale-of-klocke/&do=findComment&comment=2112628

Again, interesting how we're playing against the same enemies, but how dramatically different they look between our two games! Good luck with the next batch of enemies! :D

ced1106, no specific rules for the civvies, they were just set dressing. The intention was they would run away if any monsters entered the market! Not sure who makes the ghouls I have.

Good luck!

Where did you get your models? Are they the Frostgrave Gnolls set? I ransacked my Reaper Bones KS for gnolls and D&D prepainted for miscellaneous beastment, and couldn't come up with enough ranged units, much less an elite. I think you need four slingers for one of the enemy groups! Ended up proxying some Conan Picts led by a Pict-looking monster.

fwiw, Journey of the West, sometimes seen at a Miniature Market sale, has a set of minotaur miniatures, with melee, ranged, and elite units suitable for minotaur enemies that would work as some of the Threats (Gnawlings, Dusklings, or that beast totem army...).

ced1106, they are indeed the Frostgrave Gnolls. I bought them specifically for 5LftB. I made 5 ranged weapons and the other 15 melee. For this afternoon's game (just finished) we needed 12 Gnawlings, 4 of which were slingers, so no problem.

The attack on the Gnawling’s scout camp in the Dijabringabeeralong Desert. As the Compagnye surreptitiously approach the Gnawling camp, they come across a grim reminder of the brutal nature of their opponents. The Gnawlings have erected a grim warning to intruders!

The set-up. The Compagnye can enter from the left-hand edge.

The Gnawlings are deployed in three groups of four. They have a slinger in each group and a second slinger in the centre group, led by a sergeant.

The Compagnye were able to seize the initiative and went to the high ground. The dice shows progress climbing up a djubblies, as the figures wouldn’t stand there!

As the Gnawlings move to the offensive, Bara Brith and Ilsa take out two of them with longbow and crossbow.

Hugh Pugh gains the high ground and surveys the approaching horde.

The Gnawlings, seeing Hugh poncing about on top of a djubblie, take the opportunity and one of their slingers hits and wounds Hugh. Another takes a pot-shot and stuns him, the third, luckily for Hugh, misses completely.

Bara Brith and Ilsa have remained in the wadi and this is the fearsome sight that greets them, as they resolutely stand their ground.

Meanwhile, Lew Pugh climbs the djubblies to their left. Lew is stunned by a stone from a Gnawling slinger.

As the Gnawlings charge (and they have a frightening rate of advance, 10” at a run), arrows and quarrels whirr through the air.

Tiffany with her sling, manages to take out the Gnawling sergeant.

One of the Gnawlings sneaks up a parallel wadi to try and shoot Tiffany in the back.

It’s carnage in the main wadi, as more Gnawlings charge in, their anger aroused by the death of their repulsive fellows.

In their rush to get at their foe, the Gnawlings trample over their dead.

Lew takes out another one with his bow.

Ranged weapons are raining down death in the wadi.

As the Gnawlings take more casualties…

…their morale breaks and the remaining survivors break and run.

Thorvald surveys the grisly remains as the desert grows quiet.

It was a difficult game, as the Gnawlings were able to advance so swiftly across the table. There wasn’t time to shoot at them all, the rules only allowed a warband of six, for this encounter. Another good game in our campaign.

Are ranged weapons taking over the game, and giving your warband an advantage?

Forgot which battle encounter, but we're up to eight and everyone has crossbows. Even with plenty of terrain, the gnawlings only got a few hits in because my elven hero is on the melee side, and decided to go into melee -- using a Story Point to keep him from being hit. Only needed two during the battle. I guess the severe Out of Ammo rules compensate for ranged weapons?

Were you able to reach your objective during the battle? I usually don't end up going after the objective because I'm concerned about casualties!

>  I was wondering about using them as Dusklings (and somebody's rat people as Gnawlings).

Sounds good! When you assemble the mini's, make sure you've made enough ranged units (three) for every enemy you could use the mini's for. You'll also want three different elite units for leaders (plus an extra sergeant if and when you have a large warband), although you can use a base ring or whatever. If you're in the 5L Fan FB group, I can upload my WIP "How many miniatures" spreadsheet to the Files section!

The Compagnye get word of an enemy hideout further into the scorching environs of the Dijabringabeeralong Desert. Apparently, there is a gang there called The Ossies. Relatives of the Ice Heart Court and the forest folk, these Ossies are desert folk. They dress in green, like the forest folk, as they believe that the colour green reflects the heat. The Ossies reside in Walkabout Creek, almost the very centre of the island of Jhamjarhi.

In addition to being mostly uninhabited, the centre of the Dijabringabeeralong Desert is diverse, where it consists of semi-desert grassy or mountainous landscapes, xeric shrubs, salt pans, gibber deserts, red sand dunes, sandstone mesas, rocky plains, open tree savannahs and bushland with a few rivers and salt lakes, which are mostly seasonally dry and often have no outflow. Walkabout Creek is one of the very few inhabited locations and visitors here are a rarity.

Here is the table set-up, but we are really only using the right hand end, about 3’ x3’.

Here is Walkabout Creek, with the Walkabout Creek Taberna, in the centre. In the second photo, you can see Alligator Dunkeld, the proprietor of the Taberna, polishing his flagons.

The Ossies…

Here we see the Ossies set up for a raid on their hideout. Captain Priscilla, self-styled Queen of the Desert is cracking open a few tinnies with Lieutenant Bruce and Sergeant Sheila, by the taberna. The rest of the gang are on sentry duty, surrounding the Taberna.

Apropos of nothing, Old Bob Menzies (the Walkabout Creek hermit) is caught short and makes a rush for the dunny.

The scene is set for the Compagnye’s raid.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more.

The raid rules allow for stealth moves by the attacker, until discovered. This gave us plenty of time to manoeuvre into position.

In the opening turn, both Thorvald and Ilsa take out an Ossie sentry, with the assistance of Tiffany’s mark spell. Hugh wounds another.

Incensed by this outrageous and unexpected attack, Priscilla orders the Ossies forward.

Barney, Cuthbert and Lew all loosed arrows and missed! Bara hit the Queen of the Desert, but only wounded her. She regenerates at the end of the turn and is as good as new for turn 2!
Tiffany again casts her mark spell, this time on Priscilla herself. Hugh takes advantage of the spell, unleashes an arrow and kills Priscilla. At this moment, you could feel the heart going out of the enemy.

Sergeant Sheila rallies the Ossies though and the advance continues.

Bara wounds an enemy archer. Thorvald wounds another Ossie. Cuthbert shoots at Lieutenant Bruce, stuns and wounds him. Ilsa, seeing this, looses a bolt from her crossbow and the Lieutenant is dead. The Ossies Captain and Lieutenant both down in turn 2.

Meanwhile, some of the desert folk have crossed the creek at the ford. With a mighty war cry, Starc charges.

Heartened by Starc’s attack, Cummins leads another attack, directly across the creek.

Tiffany marks Sergeant Sheila and with this, Hugh wounds her. Lew misses his target, whilst Thorvald stuns another Ossie. Ilsa shoots at the wounded Sergeant and ends her suffering.

Only just visible to the right of the Taberna, an Ossie archer has turned tail and run.

Bara stops Cummins dead in his tracks with a well-aimed shot.

Meanwhile, on the left flank, Starc is down, but Stoinis is still game and charges.

Watch out, Lew!

Finch climbs out of the creek…

But seeing the opposition, he changes his mind and runs away.

The Compagnye feel that they have the upper hand now.

Stoinis is cut down.

The Compagnye prepare to charge and engage in some fisticuffs, but the remaining Ossies have had enough and have it away on their toes.

A victory cheer erupts from the parched throats of the stalwart Compagnye.

“Let’s get over to that Taberna and see whether they have any of that Fourecks”, shouts Bara.

Citizen Sade, you are right - shooting is pre-eminent but it's hard to change a winning combination, especially when the life of your character is at stake. ;)

You’re right - shooting has been dominating the games. However, in today’s game (which the Mad Lord will provide an AAR of in the fullness of time) saw most of the shooters (including me) run out of ammunition. So it was necessary to indulge in the vulgar and messy business of hand-to-hand fighting. We’ve been lucky up to now in that we’ve not had such a situation but it’s always possible.

A fair point. Taking the high ground and unleashing an arrow storm has become the sine qua non tactic of the Compagnye. The Compagnye's motto is now 'Tolle Alta Terra et Inferni' (or TATI for short). It happened again in the next game, yet to appear here. However, in this week's game, we reduced the sight-lines significantly. Although there was a fair bit of ranged weapon action in the beginning, it developed into a rather fun bout of fisticuffs, to conclude. Watch this space...

You can certainly add more, as ranged units are "always superior" to melee. Because slings are hard to find on mini's, I got lazy and upgraded slings to self-bows. :P
Also, the undead Threat limits *your* range to 9".

> Shooting seems to be dominating the action though lately.

Had the same experience. Munchkined my way through the campaign with two Halflings who spent a year hunting rabbits and selling pelts until everyone had a crossbow and the tall guys had bastard swords. Huzzah!

EDIT: The Whispers in the Dark (?) Threat has a special ability limiting range to 9". Also, the Site / Delve Battles have limited range. Limited range didn't really affect my battles, since everyone was armed with crossbows!

Anyway, the Enemy Threat (p.97) makes taking Objectives imperative. The objectives with time limits up the difficulty of the scenario, as you can't just take a good position and wait for your opponents. Basically, when you battle a threat, add a Meeting Engagement objective, which must be completed in addition to any other objectives. If you fail to reach this additional objective, you have failed in your objective. You cannot reduce Threat and roll on the Objective Failure table.

I've written a "Munchkin and Challenges" doc if anyone's interested. I'll post it in the 5L Fan FB media section.

Many thanks all, for your interest and comments.

Herewith, the next encounter for the Compagnye as they meet the Cult of Moloch Horridus!   :o

The thorny devil (Moloch horridus), also known commonly as the mountain devil, thorny lizard, thorny dragon, and moloch, is a species of lizard in the family Agamidae. The species is endemic to Scorchio and is found mainly in the Dijabringabeeralong Desert. It is the sole species in the genus Moloch. It grows up to 65 feet in total length (including the tail), with females generally larger than males.

A cult has slowly built up over the years, who worship the Moloch and name themselves the Cult of Moloch Horridus. They are vicious predators who prey on unwary travellers. They generally move through the desert at night and attack their victims at dawn.

Drawn by the scent of blood and battle, generated by the Compagnye’s encounter with Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the Cult move through the night to Walkabout Creek Taberna.

Exhausted by their battle with Priscilla and the Ossies, the Compagnye have taken quarters for the night in the Taberna. The game begins when the Cult attempt to sneak up on the inhabitants of the Taberna.

The Cult assemble and begin their stealthy approach.

Bara and Thorvald are on sentry duty as the dawn approaches.

However, in the poor pre-dawn light, the Cult are able to advance without detection.

It is not until they reach the creek, that they are seen by Bara and Thorvald.

Due to the accurate and deadly archery skills of the Compagnye, Cult members start to drop.

Nevertheless, a breakaway group of Moloch-lovers crosses the Walkabout Creek, using the ford, known locally as O’Rorke’s Shift.

They maintain their attack as the Compagnye attempts to draw in their outlying picquets.

The main body cross the creek.

More casualties are taken by the Cultists. The Compagnye have rather cleverly, taken out the Cultist ranged weapons and the Cultists need to close to melee.

At this point, morale starts to crack with the Cult and one of their number turns tail and runs.

The rest of the Cult stand firm however, taking more casualties in their mad charge.

An arrow takes out their leader, the Grand Muff Moloch himself!

One of the few remaining Cultists makes it to the door of the Taberna, only to be shot down. The Compagnye have kept the Cultist hordes at bay and win the day.

Once again, the ranged weapons win the day. Not being satisfied with this, we decided to make some changes in our next game. The Compagnye move to Streptococcus Island, in the Defnascir chain. Changes to be detailed in our next game AAR, ‘A Deserted Dangling-in-the-Mire’.

Thanks! ...and an excellent taberna too!   ;)  I didn't think it was going to come in handy in Fantasy, but it makes an excellent pub at Walkabout Creek.

We made some changes to reduce our effectiveness with ranged weapons. The games were getting a little 'samey', so we opted for the following.

A weather rule:

Throw 1D10 at the start of each battle.
•   1 – heavy rainfall, no use of longbows, self-bows or crossbows. No effect on slings.
•   2-9 – no effect.
•   10 – bright sunshine, sun in shooter’s eyes reduces range of ranged weapons by 25%.

We reduced the number of longbows in the Compagnye:

During set-up, there should be more scenery to reduce sight-lines and allow the enemy to close for melee.

Our next AAR (to follow shortly) features these additions to our 5LftB campaign. The Compagnye move to Streptococcus Island. An updated map, to reflect the move.

Pre-game set-up for the Dangling-in-the Mire scenario.

A familiar figure darts into the privy, on the outskirts of town.

To reduce sight-lines for ranged weapons, Dangling-in-the-Mire has more buildings and roads. We threw our weather die, but to no effect.

...and as you can see, the Compagnye started in the centre of the board. There's no high ground here!

The opposition are the Stumbling Dead. One of their traits (They Rarely Come Alone) did present some difficulties, later in the game. So we initially faced thirteen Stumbling Dead, divided into three groups, two led by Sergeants and one led by a Captain.

The Captain...

The Sergeants...

and the roster...

There were six roads leading into the town and we threw dice to randomly determine points of entry. Groups 1 and 2 were led by a Sergeant and Group 3 by the Captain.

The Compagnye arrives in the town centre, fresh off the ferry from Scorchio Island. Here they are asking that age-old question, "where is everybody"?

Let the hostilities commence...

The board looks damn good, Martin. The full effect doesn’t quite come over on the video link so it’s good to retrospectively enjoy it to the full.

One problem I have with solo / coop miniature skirmish games is their lack of guidance for terrain. When two players play and one sets up while the other chooses which side to enter, there's something of a balance to create a fair tabletop (unless you have advantage over a specific terrain type and your opponent doesn't...). Not just L5R, but I've noticed in other miniature skirmish games how much better ranged weapons are *if* the terrain allows it. And, of course, when setting up terrain, you're not always thinking about balancing out ranged vs. melee, especially if you haven't played the game system much.

Anyway, try the Lasting Tales demo and Sellswords and Spellslingers to see if mandatory objectives make the game more interesting. S&S is only $8 for 10 scenarios.

I was considering purchasing Five Leagues, so read through the entire thread. What wonderful looking battles and fun storyline. It is the campaign aspect of Five Leagues that attracts me. I own Five Parsecs, but have yet to play it. In fact, I intend to weld Five Leagues onto another rules system (Wilely Games Core Rules) for the battles themselves. I just need to do the necessary pre-work to get everything linked up. On the off-chance, has anyone else done this?

Just curious, as the campaign has left off abruptly, are games still going on? Are the Gentlemen of Much-Piddling still piddling around with Five Leagues? Have they one off to something else? Just curious...

I haven't played Five Leagues, but my group did try Five Parsecs and we found the ranged to be far too deadly.

A few other things Sellswords does that you can try
* have an ambush mechanic, where bad guys can appear basically on top of PCs
* have spawning where the bad guys appear on any table edge
* make the ranged combat harder by lowering the to hit. Even crappy foes like zombies have DLs of 6 or so, meaning usually only 75% hit. And larger foes have DLs of 10+, which means 50% of shots are going to miss.

Mike, glad you enjoyed it. There were three (I think) more battles in the campaign. I lost momentum with it, on a temporary basis. All our characters, notes and play-sheets are stored on the PC, awaiting the day when we wish to restart.

In the meantime, I have talked the Gentlemen into playing an on-line campaign of What A Cowboy! We are due to play the fourth game tomorrow. Reports of the first two games are here (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=143279.0) on the LAF. Game three has been played but the startling events have not yet been revealed to the general public!

Thanks for the reply, Nathan! My copy of the book should be arriving in the next day or so.

Any suggestions on tweaks or things you changed as far as the campaign portions go? As I mentioned earlier, I am thinking of using a different rules set to fight out the skirmishes, but want to use Five Leagues for generating the campaign events and such. What are your thoughts (mad or sane as they may be  :D )?
