Loving your map. It's much snazzier than mine. :)
Looking forward to seeing how you get on.
It's so nice to have your entertaining threads on the Pulp Board manifest over here. I'm looking forward to it.
I am fetching myself a bag of crisps and a can of cider and get comfortable in time for the untold story to unfold... :D
I must say our followers are a fine looking bunch. Hopefully we Heroes will look as formidable. I think we’ll have to be looking our most ferocious if we’re going to withstand any serious quivering.
Doug
The book pages for the campaign diary look great! Is that a product from somewhere, or did you create that yourself? The initial logbook entries are great and I am definitely looking forward to updates!
Make sure to get a proper iconograph from somewhere. We need graphic documentations of your efforts - there are not many among us who can read the runes you scribble into the parchment...
What a splendid pool of followers you have there. I adore how they all have torches.
The diary is looking magnificent…You’re on top form with this one
Having only recently hears about Five Leagues I bout the PDF from Wargames vault last night and I'm keen to get reading. If this post is anything to go on I think I'm going to enjoy it.
This is looking very promising indeed, the diary looks superb as does the map, inspite of having no scale. :D
We've just arrived home and I needed a large flaggon of Old Mule Hoof ale (the one with a solid kick) and someting enjoyable to read and this is just the ticket.
Well done Sir.
They look like the Go Go dancers at the Drooping Spoon Tavern in the next village, should be easy to beat, just buy them a Bloody Mary and they'll let you tickle their belly.

I love how each team has it's own colours
Pleased to meet Reg Shoe‘s relatives!
Wow, you are getting yours done at a much better pace than I can manage. :)
I am looking forward very much to seeing some battle reports, if you get time to put some together.
Well, maybe not the treasure.
Looking forward to the heroic (or not) tales of these legendary warriors.
Thorvald the Skald is looking forward to a prosperous partnership and amassing a small or maybe a large fortune in their company.
BE ASSURED THAT THERE IS SOMEONE ELSE WHO WILL HAVE A CLOSE WATCH - JUST TO MAKE SURE TO BE IN TIME AT THE RIGHT MOMENT. SO MUCH WORK TO DO AND SO LITTLE TIME...
Looking forward to the heroic (or not) tales of these legendary warriors.
(or not)tales, syrinx0!
Our room…! Surely some mistake. I’m not accustomed to a hugger-mugger arrangement.
I was surprised how enjoyable the preparations for action were today - I’m looking forward to what happens next with scarcely concealed excitement

Fearsome beasts, knocking over the villagers' bins at all hours of the night!
Vagabond the Cheerful is looking forward to being entertained by the exploits of our happy band of brothers in his corporal absence and hopes against hope that his Avatar, Thorvald the Skald survives the intervening weeks until Body and Avatar are joined as one again.
We shall look after your Avatar as if it was one of our own children! Never fear!

That's what I'm worried about. :D
Despite members of the Compagnye spreading slanderous rumours about his responsibility for the malodorous miasmas afflicting the lodging, he knows full well that the actual cause is the experimentations with pig dung and horse urine of the mystic Tiffany.
So I'm guessing Wednesday's game will be with friends? I like solo, since I can reuse the mini's and setup for more than one game. Maybe send in a solo warband to scout out how dangerous the doggies are? :D
So I'm guessing Wednesday's game will be with friends?
I'm keen on the social aspect of gaming, so I play 5L with my gaming chum and we split control of the war band between us, playing co-op rather than solo.

Cream on first mountains lol
Such an imaginative thread 8)
Looking forward to the pics!
When do you recommend a 3x3 board vs. a 2x2 one? I've only seen 3x3 for a dungeon in the rulebook.
How are you playing the game with the other player? Coop... GM vs. player...?
Rules say 2x2 or 3x3, it's up to the players. The former pits you into the action that much sooner, so it's all a matter of how much manoeuvring you want before people start walloping each other. To be honest, you don't get all that much breathing room with 3x3 in my experience so I imagine 2x2 is very intimate.
.One of which he managed to kill himself…!
……….. it's gratifying to note 3 dead hounds at Thorvalds feet..
:D :D :D Now on the silver screen:
FOR A HANDFUL OF GOLDMARKS
( D i r t y d e e d s d o n e d i r t c h e a p )
He’s a big boy, isn’t he? Not sure if we will regret swapping him for the cute werewolf….
Humm, I thought you were advocating facing off to a Werewolf as a more manly act, rather than taking on an Ogre because they were easy.
Tiny doesn't look......easy!
Looking forward to Exeter. Will you be wearing your customary mankini?
Tiny doesn't look......easy!
Indeed - I’m stroking my chin in a thoughtful way at the moment……
Of course, the fluorescent green one, Old Scrotum (the wrinkled and ancient Snapcase family retainer) is ironing it ready, as we speak.
I was lucky to find a photo of you from a few years ago, when you preferred fluorescent pink ones and a closer shave... lol

Another visit to the ancient trunk in the attic of the west wing of Snapcase Hall, unveils another oilskin-wrapped packet of timeworn diary papers. A sample here.

although Bara would not appreciate the somewhat disrespectful references
Looks terrific!
Going to face the Dust Doggies with one of the parties soon enough. Need to paint up a shield and some other things!
Absolutely brilliant :D
Cheers, Steve, and what lovely scenery! ;) ;)
> Doug’s master plan did work, but we had a lot of trouble penetrating the Toughness of an ogre, which was set at 5. We hit constantly, due to the Mark spell, we overcame the armour stat of 2, but constantly failed to throw the necessary 6 to overcome toughness.
That was one difficult contract! My party's first contract was to raid a bandit camp, and now we're looking for an artifact. No ogres there!
All I see to overcome Toughness is the Fight Furiously and Bastard Sword. I have an Ogre rampaging in a Hamlet, and I'm going to let it burn! :D Hamlet's don't have a Town Watch you can join to avoid upkeep, so you have to pay upkeep when you're in a Hamlet. The party needed a second ranged weapon and a messenger stole some of our gold, earlier so we don't exactly have the funds to buy four Bastard Swords. We have a halfling, so we actually make some gold hunting game in Camp, so I'd rather them hunting and foraging than saving the (known) world...!
Hard rubber balls, you say...

An amazing set up. Even though that poor victim in the barrel is morbid. No mercy for the mob.
I'm curious about the person on top of the stack of kindling and what story points have to do with anything.
and what story points have to do with anything
Vaggers, this may help with the Story Points?
I have sent Old Scrotum (the wrinkled and ancient Snapcase family retainer) up to the attic in the east-wing of Snapcase Hall. He has instructions to fetch down the next packet of oil-skin wrapped annals of this ancient mercenary Compagnye. I feel it in my water, that the next packet will reveal the mystery of the unfortunate young lady on the pyre. A facsimile of the relevant pages will be posted here when Old Scrotum returns. I while away the hours, awaiting his return, with appropriate consumption of vintage port.
Perhaps one could read the notice above her head on the pyre?
While consuming said vintage port of course.
I have a master-plan.
:D :D :D
Everyone seems to have had time to train but not on the same day, is that because there's some limiting factor or were Thorvald and Tiffany too hung over to train when Bara and Ilsa did their training?Patience, dear boy - youre time will come
Looking forward to reading about the encounter with Hissing Sid, the Snow Troll from upp north.Thorvald’s bravery went above and beyond. You’ve got to hope he lived to savour it.
Another rousing victory! A very nice table too.
Thanks, syrinx0, it was a short game but we enjoyed it. There will be another entry in the diary soon to explain the real reason why Bara ran out of arrows…….Oi…..! What happens in the Creamonfurst Mountains stays in the Creamonfurst Mountains…..
Oi…..! What happens in the Creamonfurst Mountains stays in the Creamonfurst Mountains…..
Clunge Magnet is an old Yorkshire term for Ogre Attractor.A necessary accessory then, for many Yorkshire chaps….?
Of course he didn't recon on the key shooter boy leaving his arrows behind.Master-plan addendum, sub-section 3. From time-to-time, it’s recommended that the key members of a warband improvise a crisis so that the less accomplished members (eg flamboyant, scent-wearing bards) learn how to stand on their own two feet. Elementary leadership stuff.
The only thing missing was the frosty breath.
The company also got him a nosejob and salon treatment for his hair! No expenses spared I see! lol
Excellent…!
Without compromising Compagnye lore, it should be pointed out that the courgette was a recent replacement for the original cucumber. A necessary Health and Safety initiative as Compagnye stalwarts are only too aware.
Doug
For shame that this Compagnye secret should be aired, much as is Thorvald’s unclean smalls, on a public billboard for the amusement of the unwashed hoi-polloi…!
As always, a massive ‘thank you’ to His Lordship for providing very special scenery, painting figures especially for the game, sorting the tech, taking the photos, keeping the records, doing the AAR
all this whilst standing on one leg, dressed in a tutu
...and I did whistle Rule Britannia whilst on one leg! (For those of you interested in these things the tutu was pink and I sewed all the sequins on by hand!)
Blimey Snappers your mine is a work of art. I know I've seen it in the flesh but I was well oiled at the time and you kept most of it hidden with sheets of paper.
I got the impression that the game was almost finished but it seems you've cut short your narative if not I want my money back.
How did you build the table? I'm seeing floors and walls that were molded, alongside handmade cavern walls.
Wait... how do you get into the completely closed-off room? o_o
Great thread and unpaid advert for the rules. I'm very tempted.
You chaps approach to gaming is right up my street.
As a man of steel I would expect the dart to have been deflected, it must have been flung by an infernally strong device.
in the 3rd picture down, what are the black and white pebbles on the barrel in the bottom left.
I suppose I have the same question as Vaggers then!
Cheers, I obviously had to look up Tafl, never heard of it in the pubs round where I live. Darts, domino's and crib are the order of the day.
I know you sling balls down alleyways in your pubs but I think that sort of game would get out of hand in a less civilised part of the country.
I knew an iron dart in the chest couldn't keep Thorvald down.
It would be a valuable contribution to the historical record if a hitherto unknown written record from another of the Compagnye members should come to light. Failing that, perhaps a descendant of one of those heroes may feel minded to commit to paper the recollections of their ancestor which have been faithfully passed on over the centuries.
And are skellies harder in 5L than other games? Seems like they're going to be handful if they can fight alone against a warparty!
Did it make skulking around avoiding the unalerted patrols harder / alert the enemies more quickly than in a regularl 5L game?
I'm looking forward to hearing Ilsa's La la war cry, I hope you have it perfected by now as she seems to spend most of the action charging into battle singing her warcry.
Martin - I love your ghoulies…… :-*
Doug
round the horn?
tenebrious, crepuscular atramentousness, this is writing in a class of its own. You are inebriated by the exuberance of your own scholarship to the delight of us all.
Love the setup! Which enemy and encounter type is this?
And where'd the figure with the bloomers come from? :D
I just noticed... February? ;) lol
> I was wondering about using them as Dusklings (and somebody's rat people as Gnawlings).I had a look recently and came up with this lot:
Sounds good! When you assemble the mini's, make sure you've made enough ranged units (three) for every enemy you could use the mini's for. You'll also want three different elite units for leaders (plus an extra sergeant if and when you have a large warband), although you can use a base ring or whatever. If you're in the 5L Fan FB group, I can upload my WIP "How many miniatures" spreadsheet to the Files section!
Did they find the Ashes or did the Ossies survivers manage to retain them ?
Great table. Shooting seems to be dominating the action though lately. Maybe some poor light, smoke or other mitigation is needed?
Great table. Shooting seems to be dominating the action though lately. Maybe some poor light, smoke or other mitigation is needed?
Does Five Leagues ever throw up enemies with more firepower than the adventurers? I'm guessing not.I think three ranged weapons is the maximum for opponents, depending on the list.
A most excellent report
Thanks! ...and an excellent taberna too! ;) I didn't think it was going to come in handy in Fantasy, but it makes an excellent pub at Walkabout Creek.
That is a lovely looking town. Perfect for a long deadly night.
Anyway, try the Lasting Tales demo and Sellswords and Spellslingers to see if mandatory objectives make the game more interesting. S&S is only $8 for 10 scenarios.

Just curious, as the campaign has left off abruptly, are games still going on? Are the Gentlemen of Much-Piddling still piddling around with Five Leagues? Have they one off to something else? Just curious...
There were three (I think) more battles in the campaign. I lost momentum with it, on a temporary basis. All our characters, notes and play-sheets are stored on the PC, awaiting the day when we wish to restart.
