Title: Miniatures to Mix with Wargames Foundry's Dacian range?
Post by: Atheling on May 10, 2023, 12:34:24 PM
Hi guys and gals,

I'm taking a bit of a walk back in time and will be attending a Warhammer Ancient Battles event (actually attending this year now that I'm on top of the OCD etc- my first wargames event in three years!)

Before I go any further, I am aware of Victrix's amazing Dacian plastics but won't be using them as I fear for their survival in the long term as the army will be based mostly on single 20mm x 20mm bases and the miniatures will get a lot of hammer.

What I wanted to know is, can anyone suggest any miniatures that I might be able to mix into my predominantly Wargames Foundry Dacian army in metal? Alternative Command/s? Warriors? Falxmen? Headswaps are fine as I'm sure to be doing a few- major conversions are not :)

I look forward to hearing what the hive mind has to say.

Cheers

Yonks back, when I wuz a little nipper & most of my wargames troops
came courtesy of conversions from Airfix Robin Hood set, I followed the
advice of Bob O'Brien (Romans friends & foes articles in Airfix Mag.) &
made my Thracians by adding Rhomphia (bent & flattened pins) to said
Robin Hood figures.
My point is that if you were to add falx (Rhomphia like weapon) to just
about any figure in trousers & tunic you would have what you want.
So go look at:-
Ancient Britons, Gauls, Early Germans, Goths et al.

Ancient Britons and Gauls do not look anything like Dacians (unless there's a head swap). Goths might be an idea.

do you happen to know does 28mm Falx's in metal please?

Which begs the question, what did the Dacians look like prior to 50BC (the event's upper limit)?

Hi Atheling,

Have you looked at Warlords Dacians, they are similar to Wargames foundry and not as delicate as Victrix. I would suspect you could use some non limed hair Celtic figures as I assume everyone didn't wear the noddy hats?

Lancashire Games do some Dacians in 28mm.

Lancashire Games do some Dacians in 28mm.

Thanks Vodkafan, I appreciate the suggestion. I've seen many of the Lancashire games 28mm mini's in the flesh and they're quite ugly sculpts. It would also be nigh on impossible to fit them in units of Foundry Dacians.

Milud, I rest my case. :D

An easy case to rest when you don't have to do about 100 conversions to add to the none converted miniatures  :o

Atheling,
do you know how well Old Glory miniatures scale with the Foundry figures, I know they have have a Dacian range although I don't think I have ever seen their ancient figures on the tabletop? Warlord dacian commands are all metal figures. Lancashire games just look poor compared to the more modern casts out there.

I haven't seen any at all either mate which given the amount of time I've been pushing toy soldiers about on the table top is a little odd!

It's not just that. They bought the Venexia "Italian Wars" range. I bought a load of barded knights (I needed the cloth covered barded horses) and every single casting was pitted so badly that they were no use to me. I tried several times to contact Lancashire Games but they blanked me in the same manner as Black Tree. And their sculpts are, to be honest, pants.

Good Morning Everybody, I suspect the Old Glory Dacians may fit well with the Foundry figures size-wise.  They both date from the early-mid '90s and I think are quite "small" compared to modern "heroic 28mm" sculpts.  Indeed on the Old Glory US website ( which has pictures of the figures) they are described as 25mm! I mixed OG Celts quite easily with the Foundry "Celtic British" range. To be honest the Old Glory sculpts are a bit hit-and-miss. Some are superb, others awful, but are priced accordingly!

I think you will struggle to find any decent sculpts to match up because the foundry figures (as you know) are quite small by comparison to newer 28mm sculpts. What i would do is use some of the other javelin armed troops from foundrys arthurian and frank ranges, mixed in with the falx armed dacians. Ive not seen anything that comes close to the perry sculpts for this period

Have you seen the Dacian command figures by Clash of Spears? They look lovely but as new figures I suspect they may dwarf the Foundry types.

As I feared, for a large army conversions are going to be necessary just to keep me sane when it comes to the painting!  :D

Not that I've been able to find just now John. Do you happen to have a link please?

Atheling, I see from another thread that you will be at Partizan next week. Could I suggest you look at the Old Glory Dacians "in the metal" as they will be there. You may have to contact them to bring a pack as I don't think they now bring all their ranges to shows.

Regards

I have a feeling they won't mix with the Perry Foundry Dacians SJWI. On top of that, I know Andy quite well and will probably feel obliged to buy  lol

Temple of The West do some great metal Dacian Command figures.   Not cheap but on sale currently.
