A friend of mine has asked me to build him some terrain for a Border Reivers skirmish game that he is into. I have started on a Scottish Bastle House and I'm most excited to get this project into action! First steps can be seen below

The full story of my progress can be found on my blog https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/05/proxxie-goes-to-border-marches.html (https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/05/proxxie-goes-to-border-marches.html)

Nice, there Was a great article in a wargames illustrated once from memory
Cheers
Matt
-
Looks great, can't wait to see the finished building
-
Super. I suspect that the staircase up the outside will be a later addition - originally access to the upper floor will have been by a ladder.

I had a little free-time so I finished the stone work and shingled the roof, you can follow the fun (or lack thereof!) here: https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/05/stones-and-shingles.html

I had a few minutes of time so I added a barmkin to the my bastle house. I used an imprinted roller to do the random stone in the walls, saves a TON of time. More here: https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/05/daddy-what-is-barmkin.html

http://www.matthewpemmott.co.uk/2007/05/beetham-hall-beetham.html We have them in north Lancs/Cumbria as well
-
It already looks fantastic in this early state, looking forward to see the finished version.
-
@gostgost13, That is quite an impressive structure. It must have been truly grand in its heyday!
-
Tremendous. I'm really enjoying this thread. An alternative situation for a bastle would be among the ruins of Roman forts on or behind Hadrian's Wall. I know that bastles were built among the ruins at both Housesteads and Birdoswald, and they may have been built at other forts for all I know. Because the builders used the stones from the forts, the walls of the bastle would presumably have had quite a regular appearance - Thirlwall castle near Gilsland, where my mother played as a girl, is an example of a more substantial fortification built using Roman materials and I imagine that the stone-work of the bastles might well have been similar.
-
Paul Richardson,
I would certainly avail myself of ready-cut stone from a Roman ruin if I were building during the 1500s, think of the labor that would be saved! Having a supply of dressed stone to hand would definitely add a very regular appearance to the building. Plus the Romans were known to have a pretty good eye for the lay of the land, if they built a fort there it was probably an excellent bit of real estate.

With all of the larger structures finished it was time to start on the finer details, first up was windows and gunports. You can follow the action here: https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/05/windows-and-gunports-on-bastle-house.html (https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/05/windows-and-gunports-on-bastle-house.html)
-
Coming together really well.
-
Anton: although a significant cause of the destruction of the Wall was the building of the B6318, I'm sure the locals played their part, taking stones to incorporate into their own buildings. Apparently there were stones in my grandfather's family farm at Kellah which looked Roman, and that is 5 miles south of the Wall.
-
Amazing detail ....wow.
-
That looks great
-
Probably a silly question (and not intended to derail such a splendid thread), but is there any technical difference between a bastle house and a pele tower - other than one being designed by a Brazilian footballer?
-
Height...probably. Although there are shorter towers and taller houses. A tower might not always be primarily for living in but a house seems generally to have been..I think!
-
I'm no expert but I believe that bastle houses were usually 2-storey (although you did some 3-storey ones). They were basically fortified farm houses / barns. Their ground floors were designed for valuable livestock while people sheltered on the upper floor(s). Peles or peels were fortified towers designed just for people.

The barmkin looked so sad and empty that I just had to sit down for a couple of minutes and throw together the kitchen and stables, besides the Great Laird needed a place for his horse and food for his household. More info and pictures here https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/05/secondary-structures-in-barmkinand-spot.html (https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/05/secondary-structures-in-barmkinand-spot.html)
-
Great.
Coming back to the difference between bastle houses and pele towers, the bastle houses I've seen have all been in pretty remote places while the pele towers have either been in villages - there's one in Ponteland and another in Corbridge - or attached to wealthier houses.

Having pretty well finished the fancy buildings of the Laird's Household I moved on to the homes of his vassals, in the process I made a smaller, less elaborate barmkin for a less wealthy Laird and a few random walls. Then I added a garret to the Great House. https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/05/homes-for-humble-folk-and-garret-for.html (https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/05/homes-for-humble-folk-and-garret-for.html)

Coming along nicely, great detail there

Thanks to all who took time out to explain the difference.
Shaping up to be a nice set of models.

They look grand, can't wait to see them painted.
-
I spent the evening prepping the two bastle houses for their first coat of paint. This consisted of spreading a thin layer of wallboard compound over the brickwork to simulate mortar and generally soften the look of things
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSjz4B_UuZDV9s-1wFViF3QJuhRxLzfUtHB3SfDW-DOzwUG6ED_d9e946z5SJSl3UOz6LcjusMn6HrLFnaLaorWbIe6mayKrbVQAppcWzW6-1uq05ywq3VffTm0ygWPJJ1ikuSTQW79aNhVqQe6s4DnjCsLEpiaAnQhFwwiBOmVs0MdSBhX8UqEL8GJg/s4000/20230531_195204.jpg)

The first coat goes on! A layer of standard household indoor latex, matte finish of course, to protect and strengthen the foam. Once this is dry then an overall coat of matte gray from a rattle-can followed by the ultimate in tedium; painting each stone a slightly different shade of gray. I will alternate between that task and working on the interiors to keep from completely losing my mind.

The weather was nice so I got the whole complex sprayed gray today. Next comes picking out individual stones in different shades of gray. More stuff here https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/06/oh-no-im-going-gray.html (https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/06/oh-no-im-going-gray.html)

Too much variation? It seems that way to me
-
Agreed. Most of the stone would come ultimately from the same source, and so variations in colour would be more subtle.
-
The variation looks good to me if you dry brush it. A dry brush of the same colour across all of it will bring it all back together and give a more subtle variation between the stones.
-
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUtd7lzc-fzzLNT-5mExqacpkrwq7FGVYX97CmFqAjgMKRNq8BgGomG_zyLBCcAHjK57dWWPtsnDC5BCsgJIPZ8qMtLAta54vbzYHbmZYcCm5R2fisnWu8myge4w2nC4ZGxxBXwbbHGh7uiUb1aP20t_sSouZKomTYCAL3hY10gDR5KqqxdPJG_XCudQ/s4000/20230606_165754.jpg)
Not happy with my first attempt I decided to try a different approach, this produced a more subtle result but is painfully labor-intensive.
Lots more pictures and a step-by-step can be found here https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/06/perhaps-im-trying-too-hard.html#more
-
I think the variation looks good. With dry brushing and washes the differences will become less stark, and the tones will blend. I usually like to have one colour that stands out a bit.
-
Looking really good, can't wait to see it when it's finished.
-
I think the variation in the second batch looks really good, and should be perfect when a wash has been applied. Are you aiming for a specific part of the border? I know nothing much about the Scottish side, but I've always thought that on the English side the stone takes on a redder hue once you go into Cumbria.
-
Amazing builds. You really capture the essence of these structures.

-
Looking good. I'm loving all the subtle shades of grey.
