SYW Battle of Wilhelmsthal 1762

Hi all,
We played this battle with Honours of War rules

The introduction of the battle is very well described by Kronoskaf:

http://www.kronoskaf.com/syw/index.php?title=1762-06-24_-_Battle_of_Wilhelmsthal

On June 21 1762, Ferdinand advanced to the Diemel with the main Allied army.

On June 22, Soubise and d'Estrées moved northward from Kassel, closer to the Diemel, with the French army of the Upper Rhine. The Reserve of the right wing under M. de Castries advanced towards Carlsdorf and took position with its right anchored on the wood of Reinhardswald. Meanwhile, the Comte de Stainville covered the left of the French army by taking position on the heights bordering the stream of Westuffeln. Soubise and d'Estrées thought that Ferdinand had moved closer to the Diemel to prevent the passage of French troops. They did not consider the possibility of an Allied attack. They fixed their headquarters at Wilhelmsthal and halted. The positions taken by the French army were very badly chosen: too far from the Diemel to prevent its passage by the Allies; its right flank rested on the large forest of Reinhardswald who could have been rendered absolutely secure by the occupation of the Sababurg, which commanded every road through that forest. Nevertheless, Soubise and d'Estrées allowed this important post to fall into Ferdinand's hands. Again, the occupation of the passes to the south of the Diemel would have secured their front; but here also they had allowed the Allies to be before them. Furthermore, they had stationed Castries with the Reserve of the right wing at Carlsdorf, in absolute isolation from their main body.

On June 23, Ferdinand sent all his advanced posts across the Diemel to cover the construction of bridges over the river. Meanwhile, seeing the bad dispositions of the French camp, Ferdinand saw his opportunity and, though he could bring but 50,000 men against their 70,000, resolved to strike at once. Accordingly, he recalled Luckner, posted at Sülbeck across the Weser, to pass this river at Wambeck during the night and to march to Gottsbüren, a little to the north of the Castle of Sababurg. When Ferdinand received confirmation of Luckner safe arrival at 8:00 PM, he ordered the whole army to be under arms at midnight, ready to pass the Diemel in 7 columns by 3:00 AM.

He also sent Granby’s Corps on a big round to attack the French main army from behind.

We played this battle a couple of weeks ago.
Miltiades and Nick took the Allies and I took the French.
Designing the scenario I discovered that I could field at least 80% of the unit that took historically part in the battle plus the right nationality of the rest.
Our Orders of Battle were reduced to 1/4 of the real ones. I took one every 4 battalions and one cavalry base for every squadron. (The artillery was over-represented though   :))
In addition, for space reasons, I chose the table to represent the clash between only two out of three of the French bodies, against Ferdinand at their front and Granby at their back, as shown below

So, this was our initial table set up, as seen from the side of Ferdinand

This is the French deployment, all three lines looking to the side of Ferdinad's arrival, unsuspected of the appearance of Lord Granby at their back

The three French lines. The first is commanded by Stainville, the second and third (French main army) are commanded by Soubise.

Here is Granby, appearing at the French rear.
The second and third French line, commanded by Soubise, were surprised and lost time to change front.
According to the scenario, they would change front on a 4,5,6. So, not all of the units were ready to anticipate Granby's approach.
Soubise's Corps spent three rounds to change front in its entirety.

Stainville's first line, although he has some good units (Grenadiers de France and Grenadiers Royaux), is too weak to face Ferdinand's force, six columns of the Allied Army.

View behind Staiville's line. Now it is time for the Brunswick Infantry (3d Column) to charge!
Foreground right: Soubise ordered a Swiss battalion to aid Stainville's right flank. They were too late to come, being several times unlucky throwing a 1 to move.

One more disaster for the French!
The British cavalry (1st Column) of Ferdinand's command, with a double move, falls on the flank of the Swiss sent by Soubise to cover Stainville's left!
What is worse, the unit diced to turn to face the cavalry, but failed!

The French cavalry has been defeated in every engagement.

great game-report and description of the battle. We are going to repeat it (with a few amendments perhaps to give the French a better chance) It was one of the most spectacular games I have ever participated. Cheers

Thank you, dear friend! It was a honor to play with you!
Nick and you played the Allies extremely well and it was a very enjoyable game with a very convincing historical result.

Absolutely superb!  That's definitely one to do once I've painted my Brunswickers and Hessians.

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it!
I'm happy how this battle turned out, I may say it was like a tactical exercise ending in a historical result.
This showed clearly how badly the French were posted in the actual battle.

Well then.   I Guess it's Huzzahs to the British and Germans!

Great battle and report, by the way...

Once more a very impressive narrative backed up by all those lovely photos of BEAUTIFULLY painted miniatures. I am, as always, amazed by the splendid way you capture the feel for the period & recreate battles in such detail. VERY WELL DONE!

The Allied players had an excellent performance!
The scenario was too difficult for the French.
Playing with them I tried my best but I had also the dice gods against me.

There was a critical moment, when a Swiss regiment detached from Soubise was striving to come and help the right flank of Stainville who was being pressed hard. This regiment was enfiladed by the Allied cavalry who made a double move and, worse than that, diced to turn and face and failed.

For this particular instant, many factors were involved:
1. This Swiss regiment (Diesbach), belonging to the middle French line (Soubise) was ordered march to help Stainville's right flank and bar the way to the 1st Column of the allied cavalry.
They brought 1 for two rounds and were delayed to place themselves level with Stainville.
2. The Allied cavalry brought a 6 and was allowed to make a double move, covering a great distance, falling unexpectedly at the flank of Diesbach.
3. Diesbach, not having enemies frontally, according to the rules, could turn to face, bringing 4, 5 or 6. They brought 2.  :'(

It was really a bad moment for me, as the French player in this game and in a critical phase.
The easy demise of the Swiss opened the road to the Allies for turning Stainville's right flank.
Later, they had free cavalry to send and fall at the rear of Soubise's cavalry fighting near Wilhelmsthal.

Two pics say it all: Please, note the line where the two tables join. The Swiss unit is standing astride.
They did not manage to move, while the Allied Cavalry was behind Grebenstain (1st pic), until they appeared at their flank (2nd pic)

DintheDin, how do you find "Honours of War" as a ruleset?I plan to re-start gaming SYW in 15mm after a gap of 25 years, and am looking for a set of rules to replace my venerable 1st edition Koenigs Krieg. Welcome your views on the Osprey set or any others out there.

Hi!
I haven't played with Koenigs Krieg, so honestly I cannot make a comparison.
What I know is that for more than five years now I am stuck with these rules and we have played dozens and dozens of games from little skirmishes to big battles and the game ran smoothly and -most of all- you could get a result in reasonable time. The rules are so easy to learn that after a few games you need only the 2-page QRS to play.

Here is a nice review of the rules
https://dalauppror.blogspot.com/2015/11/honours-of-war-review.html

If you wish, you may visit the Honours of War forum
https://honoursofwar.com/
Where you can find many scenarios and battle narrations and get an answer if you need any explanations or clarifications.

I strongly suggest that you give these rules a go.

Another of your entertaining AARs Din, very intersting. Nice to let those poor Swiss have a say too - they should have expected the Scotsmen not to follow German rules of traffic though...  lol

Cheers Fedja

DintheDin, many thanks.  Actually have the rules, but have never used them.  To be honest I'm not a big fan of Osprey's offerings but these may be the exception. I've joined the Forum so will spend a few happy hours this Bank Holiday weekend checking it all out. I recently refurbished my 30 year old Freikorps Prussian army with new flags and some extra figures, I still have my French to so. Some of my local gaming mates have Austrians and Russians so maybe I can persuade them to dust their armies off too!

I know your love for SYW as you live in an area that has seen some important battles of the period.
Enviable!
