Title: 10 Weeks 100 Miniatures
Post by: Davout on May 28, 2023, 03:52:19 AM
In real life I'm a high school social studies teacher and I just ended the 22-23 school year. During the year I have minimal time to paint so I've set myself the goal of knocking 100 miniatures off the pile during my 10 week break.

I've got around 40 figs assembled and ready to go and I plan to stick the rest together as the weeks progress.

I paint up a lot of 28mm fantasy (I'm a bug Frostgrave fan and would love to get Oathmark on the table this summer as well) but to kick things off I've gone in a completely different direction and primed up some BattleTech mechs.

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2023/5/28/1167897_sm-.jpg) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1167897-.html)

I'm trying a new technique, the kids call it Slapchop these days. I primed black, hit it with a grey zenathal from above and dry brushed a lighter grey and then a white dry brush.

Painting these up as Grey Death Legion

Given how fast I paint, 100 weeks = 10 miniatures!

I have just started my own slap-chop journey, so I'm curious to see how you get on.

You do seem to have a lot more white on your figures than I ended up with after drybrushing. However, I didn't do any zenithal spray, just light grey and white drybrushes.

Good luck with the project

I have this (unofficial) goal that I have set for myself: painting 100 28mm (or equivalent) miniatures each year. I've worked towards this goal for many years now and have made the mark a grand total of 1 times. To be fair, I did come (very) close several years though.

So I know how hard it is to reach such a goal, and to do it in just 10 weeks is both ambitious and inspiring. Therefore I wish you all the best in your endeavour! :)

...They need several more coats of looking at

So true!  lol lol

Slapchop would then have a wash or contrast paint applied over the top.  What you have at the minute is good old fashioned dry brushing.  Perhaps a dilute blue would look good on what you have done?

Can't help with the figures, outside of my area.  But reading this thread was well worth it:

"They need several more coats of looking at."  Ain't that the ever lovin' truth!  :)

As to 100 miniatures in 10 weeks.  You can do it.  Just a matter of focus and dedication.  Only challenge is real life intrusions and 'mojo' going on vacation.  "Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments," Jim Rohn (sp?) quote.  If that mojo monster creeps in, apply discipline.   ;)

Despite real life (I coach American football and summer is when we start ramping up for the fall season) trying to prevent me from reaching my goal I've managed to finish mini's # 1, 2, 3 and 4.

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2023/6/1/1168251_sm-.jpg) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1168251-.html)

These are the mechs from the first post with one coat of citadel contrast paint (Basillicum Standard Grey) a little dry brushed edge highlights and the red unit symbol. The skull is a water slide transfer.

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2023/6/1/1168250_sm-.jpg) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1168250-.html)

My favorite was definitely the Marauder.

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2023/6/1/1168252_sm-.jpg) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1168252-.html)

and of course the humble Urban Mech

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2023/6/1/1168252_sm-.jpg) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1168252-.html)

Next up its back to form with some 28mm fantasy.

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2023/6/1/1168249_sm-.jpg) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1168249-.html)

These are Oathmark goblin wolf riders combined with GW goblin heads and arms so they fit in with the rest of my collection.  Hoping to get these guys done by Friday.

Life as ever conspires to keep me away from the painting table so I'm behind the pace early on.

I did manage to wrap of figures # 5.6.7.8 and 9 today. A kitbash of GW and Oathmark goblins. The heads and arms and quivers are all GW  whole the bodies, legs and wolves are from the Oathmark goblin riders kit. They mesh very well and in terms of size fit in between the old GW goblin world riders and the new Aos kits. I have all three types and can mix and match in the units.

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2023/6/4/1168550_sm-.jpg) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1168550-.html)

Up next a random assortment of beats for my Frostgrave bestiary.

That's an interesting approach. I have oodles of old goblins, so keeping the wolf riders compatible would be nice. I shall remember this when I get around to doing them (focusing on skeletons just now, another good subject for contrast paints and slap-chop :D)

Trying to speed up production this week had me going for some low hanging fruit. I'm trying to run the Frostgrave Thaw of the Liche Lord campaign this summer and need to beef up my beasteary.

So for figs # 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 I present four stands of giant rats and two war dogs. All the miniatures are by Reaper with the rats being Bones Black and the dogs being old school metal.

Miniatures #16, 17, and 18 are three more quick beasts for Frostgrave. An Ice Toad, a Frost Gorilla and a Snow Leopard. All figures are Reaper metals.

For miniature #19 I've got a fig I picked up on Ebay about 20 years ago. He's been sitting in my pile waiting for the right time/game/army to come along and I've decided to use him as my Liche lord in my upcoming Frostgrave campaign.

He was surprisingly easy to paint and I went for a bold scheme with the red bat wings and purple cloak. You can tell he's important because of the sheer number of skulls.

That's an old WHFB character named Krell if I recall correctly :)

Great work; you're really churning them out; keep up the momentum!  8)

+++EDIT+++ Actually, he's not Krell; I looked it up. He's 'just' a regular(?) Wight (number 4 to be exact). In my defense: he's got a very similar pose...  :D

One of the large projects I currently have going is a 28mm Bretonian army using Fireforge plastics. I'm using their Teutonic range as the base models and swapping in parts from various kits to "fantasy" them up a bit.

The later editions of the Bretonian army book introduced the concept of Grail Pilgrims, fanatics who follow around the Grail Knights and hurl themselves into battle to further the quests of these renowned heroes. I used the Teutonic infantry kit and did some head swaps with Oathmark human cavalry and turned their shields upside down (which is consistent with the original GW kit).

I painted them in a very drab scheme to contrast them with the rest of the army which is a riot of color and heraldry (a unit of knights is up next in the que). This simple scheme highlights their devotion to the quest and shows how they've renounced ties to lord and family. I weathered the models with pastel powders to give them that road worn look and used Ryza Rust on their armor and weapons. Overall they are a lot plainer then the original GW kit, but I think they convey the spirit of the unit. Miniatures #20, 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25 are the first six of twenty-four.

Great productivity so far!

I think I may use this technique on my Nids project, but replace the contrast with washes…

Miniatures # 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31 are six more Grail Pilgrims. There are twenty-four in total for a unit of 20 in Oathmark and 2 units of 12 in Dragon Rampant. Next up is a unit of Knights of the Realm which should make for a colorful diversion from the drab infantry.

I can't get over how good the wolf riders look.

I obsessed over whether the wolves looked the part, with the fur and join down the middle. Now I feel it's the fairly generic (boring to me!!) riders that put me off. I'll just have to steal this idea!

So production has slowed way down. Between a crazy week last week and the fact that I'm painting a unit of knights with all the heraldry I haven't been able to finish up a miniature (hopefully this week).

But I have not been idle. I'm trying to get my group to play through Frostgrave's Thaw of the Liche Lord campaign and felt that a completed table would help spark interest (it did). I put the final details in place last night and even though it doesn't count toward my 100 miniatures goal I feel it is an accomplishment nonetheless.

All the buildings were made with Hirst Arts and Scenery Forge molds, cast in Durhams Water Putty and painted with craft store acrylics.

and my two favorite builds, the store and the library

That absolutely is an accomplishment!  :-*

The buildings look great, and fill the table quite nicely. All Hirst Art you say? They must weigh a ton! I am not familiar with Durhams Water Putty though; is is strong enough to weather the rigors of (tabletop) combat (and storage ::) )? It'd be a shame to see such a great set of terrain getting chipped and broken after all.

And my own usual goal is 100 28mm equivalent miniatures per year. And even though terrain does not always count, I do tally small terrain pieces. I simply work out how many 28mm miniatures I could have painted in the time I did the terrain and add them to the count.

So by my method, you're pretty much done now...  lol
Title: Re: 10 Weeks 100 Miniatures
Post by: Davout on July 03, 2023, 04:55:50 PM
Glad you like it! Durhams is a powdered wood filler I pickup at the hardware store here in the States. It's not as strong as dental plaster (the go to plaster for these kind of molds) but it's easy to find and works well.

In terms of durability the buildings really hold up. I've got a ruined corner that I've used for over 20 years (one of my first builds). If they do chip or break a little glue fixes them right up.

And yes, they are heavy (one of the downsides to this type of terrain).

Miniatures # 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, and 37 are six Knights of the Realm for my growing Bretonian army. I'm using Fireforge figures and while relatively simple they do paint up well, though they take forever.

I like to pick a color theme for each knights unit (red and white) in this case and then create the heraldry from there.   I also like to give my knights an "on campaign" look and weather up the barding using pastel powders.

Each knight also has a name and a backstory that explains their colors and blazons.

Miniatures # 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, and 43 are six leftover Frostgrave cultists I had lying around with the skeleton and zombie bits added from the box. They'll stand in for ghouls, armored skeletons or zombies as needed.

Did a quick and easy paint job on these guys using contrast paints for the most part. A nice break from the detailed knights from the previous post.

The final six Grail Pilgrims round out Miniatures #50, 51, 52, 53, 54, and 55. Happy to have cracked the 1/2 way point!

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2023/7/21/1171547_sm-.jpg) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1171547-.html)

I'll also add a shot of the complete unit.

The movement tray is home made, just two pieces of card held rigid by some Popsicle sticks and then flocked. I knocked a few up to see how they'd look and they'll do for now.

Up next on the painting table is some halfling militia.

Up next are Miniatures # 56, 57, 58, 59, 60 and 61. Five Halfling militia and their great crossbow. The halflings are from the Wargames Atlantic classic fantasy kit. I would highly recommend this box to any one looking for some halfligs. You get forty figs in the box with a wide variety of head and weapons options. The individual figs have a lot of great detail and I think they painted up well.

The great crossbow comes from Eccentric Miniatures, a small US based company. You get two in a pack and they are great little models. Very cost effective as well at $10 USD a pack.

These guys are going to fit in as light catapults for Oathmark and militia "peasant"  units for my Bretonian army.

I've got another week and a half of summer before I have to report back to school so here's hoping that I can be as productive as possible!

Well, I report back to school tomorrow (kids show up a week after) so today is the last day of my summer. I managed to finish up miniatures #68, 69, 70, 71 & 72 yesterday. Five men at arms for my Bretonian army.

The figures are from the Fireforge sergeants box.

In addition to the figures I also managed to finalize a project I've wanted to complete for years. Like many people my age one of my first fantasy gaming experiences came via HeroQuest. I've got a copy at home but I've always wanted to upgrade the board to something a little more 3D. I've tried to complete this project multiple times and always hit some kind of snag but this summer I was determined to see it through.

I'm very happy with the results and I hope this dungeon board will see a lot of uses across a variety of game systems.

The bricks and floor tiles are all Hirst Arts mounted on plywood with a frame of salvaged pallet wood (yes, it's heavy).

As the summer wraps up I'm very happy with my production. Even though I didn't hit my 100 miniatures goal I feel good about getting 72 figs knocked off the pile. In addition, completing the Frostgrave table and the HeroQuest board took care of two big terrain projects.

For all those who viewed and commented thanks and I'll see you next summer!

That will be a nice board to game on.  Maybe you can squeeze a figure in now and again before the year gets in full swing.  Good luck with the kids!

That is an awesome rendition of the goodestest boardgame ever! Hero Quest was my gateway as well, and you knocked it out of the park for sure  8)

And you managed to paint in 10 weeks what I manage to paint in a whole year (my goals notwithstanding ::) ) so many kudos to you for that as well...  :)
