I've been commissioned by the municipality of Gradara in Italy to make a 28mm version of their castle town for an event in December/Christmas.
It'll be on six boards of 1200mm square each and there will also be a few boards including siege works that'll go around the front and one of the sides of the main build.
Got a few samples and the scope of the work. Not a lot but there has been a lot of preparatory work 'behind the scenes' as it were :)

Oh wow! This looks like it'll be an incredible project! Definitely looking forward to seeing how this goes!
-
Wow! This will be truely epic
From the size of the table vs the figure scale and actual ground scale, does 28mm work, or do you need to do some compression?
-
What a tremendous undertaking 8)
-
A marvellous subject for your skills James. We visited Gradara and walked the walls while holidaying in the area with our family.
-
Thanks chaps :)

The table will be 2400mm x 3600mm and I spent a few days messing around with scaling etc but it hasn’t needed that much really. There’s a few parts that have had to be moved to allow for the baseboard joints (towers etc) but it’s not overly apparent.
-
An amazing project!
-
Going to be a great watch this.
Will it be in the shop afterwards? ;)

:o
Congratulations!
-
Holy Smokes, that's a project-and-a-half. Congrats on the commission. I'm sure it'll be a spectacular model once done.
-
Whoaaa :o
-
Wow, what an amazing project and your initial mock ups look great. Can't wait to see how this develops!
Chris
-
Thanks again :)
Will it be in the shop afterwards? ;)
Yeah but the postage will be a killer lol
-
That’s truly fantastic 8) 8) 8)
-
Yikes, that's going to be a big job! 8 foot by 12 foot, did I read that right?
Who's going to be responsible for the figures?
And I gotta ask.... once completed, how on earth do you safely transport it to Italy??
-
This will be interesting to follow.
Congratulations on the project, James.
-
Cheers again :)

Figures are being supplied but I’m not 100% sure who’s doing it yet.
It comes apart in six sections which will be transported by truck to Gradara.
-
Hire a van, nice drive through the Continent at the right time of the year, write it off to tax. lol lol lol

A commission to retire on!? :o ;). Well, maybe.
As others have said, this should be fun to watch the build process. And I'm guessing the order book is postponed until this is completed. Seems a rather major undertaking.
Good luck with this. Truly.
-
Wow. Best of luck.
What time period will the diorama be set in?
-
What an exciting commission! I look forward to following this- I know it is going to be awesome.
-
Thanks :)
What tine period will the diroma be set in?
Around the 1440's.
Hire a van, nice drive through the Continent at the right time of the year, write it off to tax. lol lol lol
As much as I'd like a jolly through the countryside it'll be shipped by a fine art movers I've known for years. Far too much shit to sort out if I do it on my own.
-
awesome. What a project. :-*
-
This is going to be fun to watch. You'll need a drone to take overhead pics of the complete assembled model! 8)
-
It seems a mammoth task. Good luck.
-
This is insanely cool! Is it going to be 3d printed or hand made?
-
Interesting commission, I’ve not been there. :)
-
Cheers :)
Is it going to be 3d printed or hand made?
Hand made but with lots of lasering.
-
Congratulations on the commission, really pleased you got the job, will look forward to seeing how this develops.
-
It’s already looking amazing, will be fantastic to follow progress.
-
Thanks again :)
Main wall sample is pretty much done, just need to sort the tops of the merlons out.
I've also got a dedicated page for the build on my webshop which has more description etc included.

Those huge rolls of tape must have been invaluable in sieges! ;)
Looking marvelous! :-*
-
All I can say is, "amazing."
:-* :-* :-*
-
Cheers chaps :)
-
Damn that thing is just rolling along.
-
outstanding :-*
-
Great job on that wall section. :-* :-*
-
Ridiculously COOL!
-
First of all, congratulations on the amazing commission!!!
And so far it all looks gorgeous and I will be eagerly following this project along.
-
Thanks everyone :)
Lots of drawing over the next couple of weeks so not much to show but I’ll be assembling one one of the baseboards with the walls and groundwork in early July.
-
Looks awesome!
Do you expect some of this will make its way into your shop one way or the the other?
-
Cheers :)
Do you expect some of this will make its way into your shop one way or the the other?
It’s looking very likely :)
-
Well, that's the first baseboard built and roughed out. The interior will be sorted after I visit in August but I will be making a lot of the interior buildings in the meantime.
The walls aren't painted yet but they will be once the groundwork has been shaped. The will get a base coat and basic weathering which will be completed once more baseboards are complete (matching the colours between boards).

You’re gonna need a bigger backdrop ….
In all seriousness, great work 8)
-
Forgot you were doing this James.
Bloody amazing! :-*
-
:o Looking fantastic so far! Absolutely in awe of the scale of this project!
-
This is really great! Im trying to understand the process. The wall is laser engraved with the brick texture and then treated on top?
-
Thanks chaps :)

Basically yes. After the walls are stuck together I stipple them with some texture and then paint. It helps to give a bit of relief to an otherwise bland surface.
The most recent ones haven’t had this done to them yet, it’s just the samples up to now.

Brilliant! Thats a great way of doing a project that large.

Awesome so far!
This looks so much like “Citta del Monte” in the 1949 film Prince of Foxes:

Main basecoats are on (apart from that patch on the right hand side as I ran out of sculptamould). I'll be doing the proper colouring in once a couple more bases are done as I need to match them across the joins.

Great progress on a hugely impressive build.

Awesome work :-*

Damn impressive! :o

that is really a big project and it is coming allong very nicely
-
Thanks chaps :)
-
Awesome indeed - that’s going to make some film sets look inadequate :-*
-
Really impressive

Well, bit of biggish news first. This model will now be appearing at this years Salute before it goes to Italy so hopefully some of you will be able to see it there (13th April).
I've been doing bits and bobs on it in the meantime but now I'll be back on it with a vengence :)
One of the corners of the castle was undermined and Gradara would like to see that represented so I've made a couple of the wall sections to have removable pieces. There will be rubble sections that can be placed down on either side as well but they will allow for figure placement.
Just bear in mind that it's still got a light basecoat on and these aren't the proper colours.

Looks great :)
-
Magnificent!
-
This is lovely! Yoy probably have already figure a way, but i have an idea about the broken wall part. I would fill the in between space of the remaining mdf part with a sausage of milliput. Then I would sculpt in the rumble typically filling the brick/stone layers in fortifications. Let that set. Then on the wall part that is to be removable, I would place again a sausage of miliput between the mdf, add some lubricant and press it on the previously sculpted part of the walls, in order to create a perfect fit. In that way they will be able to easily remove the part and place it back, while both parts will have some detail in the join.
I hope all that made sense ;D
-
Wonderful!
-
Truly stunning!
What a piece of work!
-
Quite Impressive!
-
Thanks chaps :)
I hope all that made sense ;D
It did thanks but I’ve already got how I’m doing it sorted :)
-
Fantastic stuff!
-
very nice indeed
-
I will make sure to seek this out at Salute. I hope your clients appreciate the work that is going into this :o
-
Cheers :)

Yes, I think so :)

Some interior buildings have been started for the castle and when a few more are done I'll be able to start taking some decent photos of the inside to give a better impression of what it will look like.
You can read more over on the Gradara page :)

They’re looking great. How many houses will there be?
-
Wonderful work James :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
This is going to be a sight to behold!
-
Thanks chaps :)
How many houses will there be?
Around 30 but they’ll be built in blocks like this just to make it a bit easier.
-
Is the reddish building a representation of sangue di bue? If so, I'm well impressed. That's a very old Italian tradition mixing bull's blood into render to get that colouration.
They look jolly good either way.
-
They look great. ;D
-
Those are beautiful buildings- really wonderful work.
-
Thanks :)

Clay earth in the area. Haven't been told if they did that for there.
-
Amazing work James. :-* :-* :-*
Do you get to play a game on it when it's done?
-
Cheers fella. I'm going to try a little game just at the front (shown below) before it goes to Salute. I won;t be playing at Salute though as I don't know the rules and I'm expecting to be talking most of the day to people lol
I've done an area around the main entrance to test the flocking and walls colours. There are still a few details to add (and the painting isn't complete) but I think it will be good enough to proceed with the rest. The drawbridge is weighted and I'll do a video on that when the rear of it is complete.
The lighting today was awful and I haven't got my decent lights set up outside yet but I will have for next time :)

Brill. :-* :-*

Thanks again :)

Love how this is coming along!
-
Impressive!

I've just spent a happy tea break going through this thread. Just 'wow'. That's proper wargaming that is.
-
Looking great so far! The drawbridge is a fun touch!
-
Thanks :)
-
You Must have a guard with a barbuta helmet on the wall
-
I'm not supplying any figures I'm afraid.
House 'planting' has begun. The dratted weather is limiting my ability to get the boards outside and take photos but there will be plenty taken at Salute when it's all together and I'm sure I'll bore you silly posting them all lol
Still some details and roofs to add and also the walls need some weathering but this should give a good idea on how the whole thing will look.

Starting to come together nicely. not long to go now til we see it in the flesh! ;D
-
You're not invited ;D
-
The atmosphere is building!
-
That’s an amazing piece of work! I like the removable parts of the wall- it seems like they will be just right for game play when the breaches are stormed.
-
OK, this just gets more and more awe-inspiring as more images arrive to amaze the eyes! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks chaps :)
There’s still weathering and another couple of layers of flock to go on but that’ll be done closer to the end.
-
It'll look great when it's painted 8)
-
I'm not supplying any figures I'm afraid.
And who is going to do the taunting at the gate?

Amazing work :-*
It's going to look very impressive when finished.

Quick post to say thanks to the team for putting on the game at Salute51 and special thanks to Filippo and Fredrico from the Municipality of Gradara from coming all the way from Italy!
The game got 'Best Presented Game'
I'll still be posting on this project as some of you may have noticed that the keep wasn't present as it wasn't going to be completed on time. Once I've edited and chosen the better pictures from the show I'll post them up here :)

Very well deserved! After seeing it all progress here it was amazing to see in person, and evidently far more work than you've made it seem! :D
-
Thanks :)
It got a bit busy at the end lol
-
WOW! :o
Well-deserved award! Fantastic terrain!
-
Congrats on the award- it certainly went to the right place :)
-
Congratulations on the award. The guys from Gradara must be delighted with it.
-
Well deserved, it's a beautiful set up and so refreshing to see pantiled roofs as they really appear, multi-hued rather than a uniform orange. :-* :-*
Is Gradara ready for the coach loads of wargaming package tourists heading their way?
-
Beyond (most) words in terms of loveliness but I think I can throw in a magnifico! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Many thanks chaps :)
-
It’s brill :D
-
It's going to look very impressive when finished.
Told you so :)
That really is fantastic, wish I’d seen it in the flesh but perhaps a trip to Italy is on the cards!
-
that is outstanding... :o
-
Cheers again :)
-
Holy moly! That is one impressive setup!
Congratulations!
