Title: My first adobe building ... ***NEARLY FINISHED*** 061209
Post by: hohlinger on November 11, 2009, 07:01:29 PM
Here is a step by step "picture story" of the building of my first adobe house. I choosed to build a church which is capable for Old West games and Pirate games. The idea is based on the church on the "Hamburger Tactica" page (http://www.hamburger-tactica.de/tactica/img/fotos_2009/12_tortuga/tortuga.html) ... I hope the designers are not angry about "stealing" their design  ;)

On the first to pics you see the basic structure build of foam core, balsa and styrofoam (5-6mm). The stairs are cast with dental plaster and Hirst Arts forms. The figure is Mr. Smee from Artizan (AHR002 "scurvy dogs") for size comparison.

In the next step some extra detail work was done ... a window with a cross made of a normal knob from a jacket, an open bell tower (with a nice position for a man with a gun  ;) ) and some ledges for the windows. The stair on the backside is also finished.

The next step was to plaster the whole thing and afterwards paint it in white.

... and then it happened!!!  :? :'( :-[

I used the wrong paint to spray paint the whole thing and the styrofoam did not like this paint at all. I had to remove the plaster on the places were the styrofoam got a little bit smaller and had to plaster the church again and again. It was a lot of extra work but I think it was worth it. Then I based the church on plastic card (2mm) ...

The next days I will put sand on the base and clay tiles on the small outbuilding on the side (cast from a Hirst Arts form). I will build the doors out of balsa. Afterwards the church will be painted with white again, then with several washes of ocre and earth tones ... hopefully it will work ... updates will follow.

I hope you like the church and the report ...

It looks fantastic! That's a really nice finish on the walls with the filler, and I like the shape of it. The second staircase up to the higher part on the roof is a great gaming design!

This is really nice! I think once I'm done with a few more old west buildings, I should move on to adobe style buildings for a more Southwest look.

Very nice building and thanks for posting the step-by-step here, Hohlinger. Let's see the finished church also.

That's a very nice looking building.

Malamute has built a whole Tex-Mex adobe town which I'm sure you've seen. It's wonderful. Your church looks like it would be a pretty good fit.

(Sadly though, Malamute's beautiful church doesn't have a bell in the bell tower (such a slapdash attitiude  :D) are you going to put a bell in that little aperture at the top of the facade?)  ;)

Made me laugh lol lol lol
Thanks

Great church.  :-* :-* :-*
Is that thin blue High density foam you are using for the walls?
Where did you get it?
Was it expensive?
The stair are great. Both the idea and the build :-* :-*

You really do need to put a bell in that tower, it's the first thing anyone says  lol

There are lots of bastards around here today.

Now where did I put that bell I stole from my niece's Lindt easter bunny. Its probably about the right scale....

What material did you use to 'plaster' the building? When I do an adobe structure I use spackle to texture the surface.

Of course! A church without a bell is not a church ... ask Malamute about that lol lol lol
I am still searching for a bell? Anyone any ideas??? I thought about a wooden horizontal post in the aperture and the bell hanging down from it. On top of the rounded wall a black wrought-iron cross will be added.

@ gamer Mac:
You are right. The blue and green material is high density foam. I bought it in a nearby shop that sells architectural and model building materials (Kirch Modellbau, homepage: http://www.kirch-gmbh.de/index_home.html). It is (in my opinion) not very expensive. For example a piece of 600mm x 330mm, 5mm thick costs Euro 3,50.

@Mikey:
The plaster is a very "wet" mixture of what we call "Rigips" in Germany (http://www.rigips.de/putze_handputze.asp#pos1). The page is available only in german ...
We use this plaster normally inside houses on walls and in the corners to close all holes before putting on wallpaper or stucco. When it is mixed with water to a very wet consistency you can put it on with a brush (it is easier to reach corners for example).

Thanks for the motivating remarks ... hope to finish it very soon.

I used to like you.... ;) lol

I am going to find a christmas chocolate decoration (I know Lindt chocolates sell Easter Bunnies with a little bell on) I am assuming I should find one on a Christmas chocolate or a cheap decoration that should be about the right scale.

New photos of the church:

Added a roof for the side building and some details and sanded the base. Still had no time to paint the thing ...

When watching the film "Rio Lobo" I got the idea to add some adobe ruins to my church which can be used as covers for my little men  ;) ... the ruins were built in 5 minutes. Okay, I know that the walls are a little too thick  :? but they are sturdy against bullets :D

:o :o :o ... you both are right ... it must be the influenza which I am fighting with at the moment ... better not building anything when feeling really sick  :'(

I try to fix it when I am feeling better ... this church will cost nearly all of my nerves until it is finished ...  ;)

UPDATE!!!

I was a little bit concerned with the situation and fixed the roof (instead of staying in bed!). Now here are two new photos with a correct roof and with the bell (a very nice present of "gamer Mac" ... thank you very much!) added to the bell tower ...

Finally I had a good day and painted the adobe ruins as a test before painting the church ... hope you like the photos.

1. basecoat the walls after painting the earth with two tones
(http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp266/hohlinger/DSC02895.jpg)

2. drybrushing with the third earth tone and finally a little bit of white on the walls
(http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp266/hohlinger/DSC02900.jpg)

3. Put on gras in different lengths and two bandidos added ;)

... and finally I did it ... hope you like the painting style. I wanted to immitate a dirty sand-coloured look of the walls like on the church in Tucson Arizona (fifth picture).

Tucson, Arizona:

The only thing what is missing is the painting of the bell. I will try to give it a oxidized copper or bronze finish but am still searching for the right method ...  ??? ??? ??? ... any ideas or links???

UPDATE!!!

The bell is painted now ...  :D

First I painted it in Foundry brazen ... then a wash with self mixed Umbra ... afterwards wash with Foundry Forrest Green shade and as long as this wash is wet I mixed some white in the dark green wash and put it on the bell. The effect looks really cool in reality (the picures are not the best sorry) ...

What are you going to do with the two windows on the side?

The windows look a little silly I know but I will not paint the interior and will leave them open. When the church stands on the gaming table the open windows are no derangement at all ... on the pic it looks strange  ;)

Thanks again for the bell ...  :-* :-* :-*

I will surely do so because I had several situations during my "scratch-building-and-painting-miniatures career" where I searched for the right color. Thanks for the tip  ;)
