Title: New 1809 project
Post by: Norm on December 17, 2023, 08:39:54 AM
Re-focussed after a recent heavy handed clear-out, I am setting the groundwork for a simple 1809 project and giving myself a year to get the 16+ units painted up.

This won't be to everyone's taste, but here is a link to my initial blog post and maybe the project is small enough for others to share in a 1 year project. Cheers Norm. LINK

The project sounds like great fun both to paint and to game, and a fine lookback to the past! Two quick comments:
(1) As the battlefield is supposed to evoke the Danube campaign, would you consider giving the village a German name rather than a French one?
(2) The infantry of the Kingdom of Italy generally has had a fine reputation (unlike the Neapolitans). For an allied unit with some unsteadiness, perhaps consider a Bavarian unit? (Actually the Saxons would be the perfect choice, but I'm not sure how easily available figures would be for their 1809 archaic-style uniform.)

Love your tag. Too many syllables for the song, though.

Nice start.

The Bavarians performed pretty well also in 1809.  Wurttemberg likewise.  I’d maybe just add them for painting variety rather than performance.

If you want variety in the Austrians consider some Landwher rather than make the grenzers levy.  The grenzers were actually pretty competent with a lot of experience as light infantry fighting on the borders.

Or: for the grenzers, count them as OK when skirmishing and less pleased when forced to fight in close order.

Thanks all, I’m not sure why some of those attributes appear in the list, but here and elsewhere are giving similar conclusions ….. another unit goes to painting sticks :-)
