We’ve all seen the trope of the heavily bearded wargamer, nodding serenely to a helping of power metal while they slap colour onto their space marines. Just wanted to know what kind of music y’all listen to, and if you’ve noticed any differences in taste between different genres of wargaming.
Personally I’m something of a sponge, and listen to whatever I can get my mitts onto, but lately I’ve been listening to a lot of folk, and some gorgeous post-metal.
Thanks in advance!

I listen to a bit of Radio 6 Music, occasionally Radio 3, or stick on an old CD (Radiohead, Nirvana, Jesus & Mary Chain, The Smiths, etc that kind of thing).
Depends what I'm in the mood for.
-
I tend to tune my music to the genre occupying the bench/tabletop to set the mood (tempered greatly by ease of availability - I'm not going to hold up a project by being a stickler!).
For example, the current work on a WWII Normandy project has the speakers putting out some French Cafe stuff found on YouTube, while doing pulp would find an Indiana Jones soundtrack playing, or "Conan" or "LOTR" serving as the background to a fantasy game.
-
Same here, depends wot I'm painting. I'm a fan of film soundtracks, and can usually find one to match the the toys, I'm splodging paint on.
:-*
-
Another vote for an eclectic mix - recent material has included pop (Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa, etc), "Viking" music - both folk style and metal (some sung in Old Norse), French pop (Joyce Jonathan, Shy'm, Maitre Gims et al), even though my French is all but non-existant, traditional Native American tribal music and the odd track from stuff I listened to 20/30/40/50 years ago.
My current earworm is "Wake The White Wolf" from The Witcher sung by Miracle of Sound. Been stuck in my head for days.
-
I've never really tried matching music to game, but back in the day playing the Necromunda gunfighter scenario to an Ennio Morricone soundtrack was excellent fun!
I hobby much less frequently than I used to as a teen, so it is more the case that certain albums I thrashed back then remind me of the hobby. I might be the only person in the world whose first thought, if you played me anything off of Pearl Jam's or the Smashing Pumpkins' first albums, is resentment at how underpowered Dark Elves were in 4th edition Warhammer.
These days, I do love me a bit of fastfastfast hardcore (End It, Grand Collapse, Stress Positions etc.) or shoegazey stuff.

Love the Miracle of Sound stuff, and my background music while painting Vikings was Skald

My 'wargaming' music tends to be a fairly eclectic mix of folk and martial... so it ranges from things like the 1812 Overture all the way through to Vendean rebel songs, Spanish Civil War folk songs and so forth... Doesn't necessarily have to match up to what I'm painting or playing though. Also quite few 'generic fantasy/sci-fi music' tracks one can find on youtube which play for a good 60 mins or so.
One thing I always seem to come back round to is Strawhead's Sedgemoor album, which is great, except that every time it gets me wanting to start the much-planned-but-never-begun Monmouth Rebellion project (issue being, I'd rather go 15mm than 10mm, but just can't find a range I like enough, with appropriate non-uniformed types).
-
I'm always listening to either music or a podcast / radio show when I paint (either something from radio 4 of a something more nerdy on youtube). For music I do most of it an album at a time - sit down with the brushes and listen to an album (about 40 mins).
I find painting the perfect time to listen to an album and pay attention - if I do it whilst at the computer for instance I often get distracted and am only half-listening.
I don't have specific music for painting.
My tastes are vintage - all sorts of old rock, soul, blues, folk, country, jazz, etc etc.... 50s, 60s, 70s... When I get interested in something I go in deep.... Every obscure corner must be explored!
-
'War of the Worlds' by Jeff Wayne is my classic painting choon, but any of the Queens albums (except 'Made in Heaven' ... we don't talk about that) and then any old thing that catches my fancy.
-
Often an Audible book, otherwise anything from Beethoven to Hawkwind via John Coltrane.
-
Painting Vikings, got to be the film soundtrack, very loud!
:o
-
I usually listen to rock and metal, but during painting/modeling I watch movies or tv shows. When gaming against a live opponent, I do not listen to anything as club noise is enogh to overshout without music added :)
-
Unlike most, I actually like music. Paint to baroque or classical, or sometimes the better romantic operas, with jazz if I'm likely to be interrupted.
-
While I like listening to a wide variety of classical music as well almost any music can wind up in the background. Hawkwind, Deep Purple, blues, 70-80's Guitar bands, Reggae, speed metal, Steeleye Span or medieval chant could randomly pop up.
This probably is not shocking but I have almost nothing newer than 2000 assuming new releases of medieval music or music from rock musicians now in their 70's don't count as really new.
-
A movie soundtrack on rare occasion but it's usually an audio book with a tie to what I'm painting. Currently my head is in my Old West project so I've started listening to The Last Gunfighter to help keep the mood. For Homefront it's the Dads Army episodes done for the radio etc etc
-
currently listening to Walter Trout - fantastic blues guitar music - everybody i have recommended him to loves it !!
-
Thanks for the responses! Might have to try out some of these mentions, I’m always on the lookout for new music :D
-
Audiobooks, reggae and dub, 70’s-80s electronica. Down tempo.
-
When I game? Genre-appropriate soundtracks.
When I paint or build terrain? Same or audiobooks.
When I work? Nothing. I need space and silence.
-
For gaming: someone at the club usually has some soundtrack or something similar playing in the background.
For painting: a bad tv show in the background or some 70/80s experimental industrial music.
-
Recently listened to the Ink Spots while painting up my Fallout figures.
-
When gaming i avoid anything that is too much of a “soundtrack”. the climax rarely synchronizes and is often hard to talk over. I generally prefer no music to game with but occasionally i like Carbon Based Lifeforms or Tangerine Dream when playing anything Cthulhu.

Seems more like you look for good music :D the following albums there playing this weekend more or less while doing some hobby stuff
John Lee Hooker - It Serve You Right To Suffer
Amy Antin - Just For The Record
Kings Of Convenience - Riot On An Empty Street
Sevdaliza - Shabrang
Kim Petras - Feed The Beast
Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker
Karl Blau - Introducing Karl Blau
Jim Hall - Concierto
Yello - The Race
Sade - Lovers Rock
Wolfmother - Wolfmother
non music would be some lore like LAWhammer re-livestreams
or some interviews of gw legends at jordan sorcery
or some call of cthullhu from stream of bloods neptun society
or some Mark Felton Productions WW2 stuff or simmular history productions
In the end I have to many interests and genres i listen/paint or pile up lead for lol
-
I'll usually cue up a few albums and let the player randomly jump between them.
Choices tend to be folk, quiet country (veering towards folk), classical or some 80s stuff. It's just background noise, so it's usually on pretty low.
Every couple of years I'll listen to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
I gave up Amazon streaming as I was just listening to the same set of albums over and over (most of which I already owned). Gaming (what little there is) is done without music.
-
I normally listen to old school punk and post-punk: New Model Army, Virgin Prunes, Dead Kennedys, stuff like this...
-
Seems more like you look for good music :D
Let’s hope so! I’ll check out the recommendations ;)
-
Mostly Bucks Fizz, Deacon Blue, James Blunt and Celine Dion. Listening to them has made me realise that there is a human endeavour arguably worse than war. This salves my conscience as I paint toy soldiers.
Besides, to produce art you need to suffer.
-
During a game? no music - interaction with players more important.
Painting, building/converting figures or building terrain? Classical - Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Sibelius or Classic FM (radio)
Clearing up after a game? 60s or 70s compilation CDs
-
lol Looks like I'm actually able to be stereotyped for once! I'm a miniature wargamer who is also a huge metalhead, so that's what's usually playing whenever I paint and also when I game (with likeminded opponents; I do tend to be considerate towards those of lesser taste :P ).
But truth be told, it's just about anything but current pop music. I have taken a real liking to eighties feelgood music for instance, such as Huey Lewis and the News, Stan Bush, King Cobra, Kenny Loggins and a plethora of other, usually soundtrack related, songs. You know; from Rocky, Kickboxer, Karate Kid, Iron Eagle, Commando, Transformers etc. The ones that make you pump your fist in the air and go 'Yeah!' ('Never surrender!') :D
Then there's the whole Synthwave/New Retro Wave corner, which is a mix of eighties inspired electronic music, often combined with a healthy dose of metal. Groups like Pertubator, Carpenter Brut, Dance with the Dead, Gunship, Scandroid or Meteor.
Soundtracks are pretty good too. Last night we played a game of Grimdark Future, pitting my Necrons against my mate's Eldar, so naturally I put on the Terminator soundtrack(s)! But I also still love the ones from The Abyss, Lord of the Rings or Jurassic Park for instance.
Classically, I really like the Canto Ostinato by Simeon ten Holt; it really helps getting into, for lack of a better word, a painting trance, if you will. But only when I have an entire day to paint, which is not very often at all I regret to report.
Coming back to the metal though, when painting I like playing Melodic Deathmetal such as Amon Amarth, Dethklok and Archenemy, but also the classics such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, ACDC and Metallica.
Then, I also love 'fairytale metal' such as Nightwish, After Forever, Epica and Within Temptation. And when I'm in a truly brütal mood, I tend to play stuff like Slipknot or Orbit Culture.
A guilty pleasure are the hairmetal bands, such as Mötley Crüe, W.A.S.P., Europe, Quiet Riot, Poison, Skid Row etc. But also modern interpretations of the genre, such as Steel Panther and Crazy Lixx.
I usually tend to match the chosen music to the subject matter of the miniatures on my painting table, but as you can tell from the above, there is a prevalent general theme of riffs and powerchords... :D

Have a listen to Wet Leg, Yard Act, and Last Dinner Party…
-
My God! Did someone just mention bands from the past five years? Young people, I dunno..... lol
-
Funny enough, my daughter was listening to a band the other week and I found myself in the unusual position of actually liking her music. It had a real electro-eighties vibe to it with a female vocalist who reminded me a little of Blondie. The band's called Metric (I'd never heard of them) and apparently they've been around for 20-something years. I like 'em!
-
Have a listen to Wet Leg, Yard Act, and Last Dinner Party…
Way ahead of you on those counts… thanks for the recommendations either way :D

Just found this today, maybe interesting for people searching for ambient Gaming music

Why thank you, I’m running several D&D games so this will be useful ;)
-
It seems that nobody mentions videogames soundtracks which are often very atmospheric! :)

The problem is syncing any high intensity sound tracks with high intensity moments in the game. unless you want to jump up and re-cue the music every ten minutes, it’s never going to match. Buildup rates vary.
Frankly, noise to signal rates are diminished by most music when you are playing. Having to shout the combat result over the crescendo of Saucerful of Secrets doesn’t make for a good time even if they sync.
-
There are some great soundtracks with lower intensity out there as well though- I’ve never played Octopath Traveller but I find the soundtrack very useful for gaming purposes :D
-
Gaming soundtracks? My absolute favourite, even after all these years, is the one from Deus Ex Human Revolution. Absolute perfection... :-*
-
There is always Eno: Music for Airports
-
Interesting. Haven't been able to listen to Eno's ambient works for years but I do regularly roll out 'Here Come the Warm Jets'. First 'Japanese pressing' I can recall buying.
I'm currently gripped with nostalgia for Les Rita Mitsouko.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUjne298BdM
and a little bit of the sublime Françoiz Breut, who I was lucky enough to see live some twenty years ago.

Francois Breut was pretty fun! Never heard of her before, thanks for the recommendation :D
-
I grew up punk, so punk is the lion's share of what I listen to. However, I can't listen to it while I work (data egineer) or game. At work, I usually listen to either synthwave or old school instrumental ska. music without words that might distract me. When gaming, I like to also spin music without words and on lower, background volume. This could be synthwave, movie/tv scores, John Carpenter albums, etc.
-

Look out for her album Vingt à Trente Mille Jours. It's an amazingly good record. Much of it written by her ex, Dominique A, who is/was a big star in France.
Something of a similar vintage but from a completely different angle is DJ Dolores' Aparalhagem. He's one of the best proponents of manguebeat. I can't listen to this without being transported on to the back of a motorcycle ridden through the streets of Recife at midnight by a beautiful woman. Definitely in my best albums of the past twenty years list. Have a particular listen to the tracks Sanidade and O Medo Do Artilheiro.

Since I've gone all 'world music' on you. It would be remiss not to include tow of contemporary Africa's best artists, both coincidentally from Mali. Rokia Traore and

Proving that the tuba is the most subversive instrument in the orchestra. Turns shitty Scandi-pop or shitty Aussie-pop into something worth hearing instantly. Not only subverts Euro/Anglo pop but ranchero music at the same time. :)
Vikingos del Norte, the world's best 'not quite a cover band'. Now if I was going to paint Vikings.....

In reply to the first one, I’m already familiar with Fatoumata Diawara, found her through her excellent collab with Gorillaz :D
I’ll check the rest out!

Blank Frank should not be heard anywhere near my gaming area for either playing to or painting to. It remains a great album but not for gaming soundtrack/intense concentration while painting.
-
BBC 6Music while I’m painting, partly because they introduced me to:
Have a listen to Wet Leg, Yard Act, and Last Dinner Party…
but mostly because they have Iggy Pop as a DJ!
-
I paint almost every afternoon when I return from work. I usually listen to Adam Carolla podcasts. He's funny and it helps me to keep up with what's going on in the news.
-
In terms of podcasts (we’re rather off topic now but that’s fine :D) I really enjoy Tom Holland on The Rest Is History. They’re very informative, and have a nice sense of humour too.
-
I used to listen to the “Hardcore History” podcast long ago…i wonder if they are still around.
-
For a variety of reasons I rarely listen to music these days and have little if any knowledge of most of the artists mentioned but I’m nevertheless pleased to have read this thread for the immense gratification it has given me in not mentioning, let alone recommending, Sabaton or any any other exponent of military history metal. It is a genre that in my opinion has no conceivable reason to exist other than to make listeners question their life choices.
-
20-Sided Gamified, Man Battlestations, and Little Wars TV Podcasts for me!
-
I didn’t even know Little Wars had a podcast!!! How did I miss this!!!
-
Classic Rock and Classical Music.
-
Depends on my mood...
Anything From Audiobook to podcast to Vietnam war 'era Rock to German Industrial....
I have a VERY Ecclectic playlist that ioves some very wierd juxtapositions sometimes...
-
I have an eclectic playlist as well lol
What sort of podcasts? I’ve already mentioned that I like historical stuff, and actual play RPG ‘casts as well.

I'm currently looping 'The Witness' by Adam Jones (from TOOL). It's awesome painting music and I just can't get enough of the song:
