Title: Weird War II conversions and kitbashes in 1/35 (Von Krupt warped by Elder Gods)
Post by: white knight on March 01, 2024, 02:37:39 PM
Moving home and having a baby has lead to an unvoluntary 2 year break from the hobby in any active capacity.

I have started to kitbash and convert some more figures for my 1/35 scale project though, and to motivate myself to keep finding the time, I will start a thread for them here.

I will start with some I did pre-move/baby and didn't post here and then move on to the new ones.

First ones are the obvious go to for anyone converting WWWII models: German zombies!

These are done using plastic 1/35 wehrmacht figures and the old GW zombie kit. You know the one, the one with oversized heads, hands and pretty much everything. Not very good for 28mm, but wonderful for converting 1/35 scale zombies.

After the initial kitbashing of the plastic parts:

And then with some greenstuff to fill the gaps and add some more wear and tear:

And a fifth one I did a bit later using a different plastic kit:

And an officer using a second hand resin body that had some wonky casting (possible recast) and a Mauser Earth head.

Nice find about the old goofy zombie kit! Having some 1/35 projects myself, I will follow this thread with great interest.

Thanks. I can't take credit for that revelation. Redzed did it years ago and there's at least one more member on here who did it as well. I should also point out that even at this scale, the hands in the zombie set are still grossly oversized...  o_o

The next couple conversions were these German wolf runners (scouts). These are a werewolf type troop, where the wolf gene has been diluted so that the human side is more dominant and they are more in control.

These use (supposedly 28mm) heads from Puppetswar miniatures. 2 of the 5 heads are a bit small, but the other 3 seem to work just fine. That's a mix of scalecreep and the distorted proportions of gods own scale for you.

The first two are a squad leader and trooper.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT4uwDiRlwB4A5fIBx1w9AXqfeyS-KWmqHKdrlAEeUALUAgEEG0NS0GP-s6NhSUSGuiIhNlPjiu5Y4OrBJT3v2uQXJukaO6zvJkKoTZA_TAxNo6Yc3vxla8PgzDR4Sh9TFMViad4emj9r8U7RtfOeiAkKeVumUrqDctchm3aMcCP2DRcAyBlbl0xKvkOE/s960/213523804_1843362939179345_27869707856829536_n.jpg)

The squad leader uses a resin body that I have forgotten the manufacturer off at the moment. Having a smoke and standing in a casual pose, he gives off a Wolverine type vibe to me.

A standard trooper, using a plastic body that I got off a fellow LAF-member a while ago.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbhufWBmpk_uxcSAEXj6Ye0-EP3uDxcfcVXci4dKweIXLZZ1aXyeae3R8D1BNQ4VTKdbZrSMItf-vFZ5FMsLzaX7kiArpgJ8GZdY8q5KQvnD7ryQU68xLSxKykHIV6PypBQX7SXeDUscT8548rhJv7nR5Yr2SP0jXRwi-J_uKfSISsLLkQUzXymUsOyeA/s960/212308729_1843363012512671_5352848921290399617_n.jpg)

Then a third one I'm not quite sure about whether it works, so I haven't greenstuffed the gaps at the shoulders yet. It's a jacked up drug enhanced version of the wolf runner, bringing out a more feral side. It uses another plastic body (the hunched over pose seemed suitable) and plastic arms from a 40K spacewolf kit from a bits seller. Again, scalecreep means these arms are long enough and I'm wondering if they are not all together to muscular for the body. I would welcome some thoughts on that.

Those arms are probably too bulky, but you could hide the comparatively puny looking torso by sculpting a zeltbahn half over his shoulders.
The idea is really good though, who knows, Vril works in mysterious ways.......

Zeltbahn is a good idea, but slightly more complex then the kind of sculpting I'm willing to do in this scale as it is above my skill level and I do want it to look as good as it can. Probably better to just scrap the idea. It's insane how bulky these supposedly 28mm parts can get.

Nice find on the arms, you could sculpt some fur and tattered clothes to its back as the uniform is torn on its bulky muscles.

WW2 Graf Orlock (Nosferatu). Another conversion I'm not quite sure works. Using modified head and hands from the zombie kit and a plastic body that had a suitable uniform (it's from a ICM plastic kit with German road police).

I did acquire another set of plastic hands from a bits seller that may work better. Not entirely happy with the head either. Adjusting the shoulders to be more square might also help. Thoughts? ???

I think its cool, you just need to fit the hands to the arms better. Drilling the arms of the coat might help.

I also think this one looks good as is, hollow the cuffs and inset the wrists and he will work.

As well as the GW Zombie heads you can get good use from the Mantic Ghoul heads, I have used several of them with my 1/48th Projekt X figure conversions. You also get the "Freddy" style razor claws that add another option.
Title: Re: Weird War II conversions and kitbashes in 1/35 (Dirty Dozen Joker & Harley)
Post by: white knight on March 15, 2024, 10:41:21 AM
In the series of bad ideas I'm not sure I should do, but have to do anyway to get out of my system, I was thinking of adding a Weird WW2 version of a Dirty Dozen/Suicide Squad type of band, starting with this Joker & Harley. Getting the choice between going on potentially deadly missions or a firing squad, these criminals chose the former, at least until they see an opportunity to get away.

The Joker uses a German resin officer head with a smirk (it's the head that gave me the idea) and a british officer resin body with a cane. I don't remember where the oversized gun came from but it seemed appropriate and some greenstuff detail was added (flower and hair). Harley Quinn is a standard resin WW2 pin-up style model that just screamed Harley as it was.

Even if you don't include the squad in the end those 2 are great figures. But you really should use them, WWWII needs old school comicbook characters and supers.

Thanks for encouraging the madness!

I certainly plan to add comicbook heroes and villains. I have a partially painted WW2 style Captain America (the version in the leather jacket and helmet) and I converted a Redskull using a resin historical figure's body, some plastic accessories and resin Redskull head from ebay. Need to fill some gaps and fix some casting flaw in the back, but I think he looks the part.

Reaching the last of my older kitbashes with this Russian WW2 "Red Guardian" inspired figure. It is a reimagining of the character, based on what he could have looked like in this setting.

Still needs to be cleaned up and finish greenstuffing, but the essential idea is there. His shield (he is the soviet answer to Captain America after all) is an actual uniform button off ebay. The main body is a historical figure made by Evolution Miniatures, a really beefy character whose bulk and size fit the part in my mind. The head is the original head, with added mask for a pulp WW2 feel, though I also considered a more brutal look with a gasmask head. Which head do you think will work best?

This is one of the more recent kitbashes. Ever since I got this 1/35 German figure from Mantis Miniatures in a lot, I wanted to use it as the base for a vampire. Initially I considered just painting the head to suggest vampire, but the Vampire head from Pulp War 35 is a perfect fit and looks so much better. Given the roughness of the coat's casting which is different from the quality of my other Mantis figures, I'm wondering if this might perhaps be a recast though, so I may have to pick up another one.

In my personal fluss, this is a third generation vampire, with the initial sire being the one released (and killed) in The Keep, who infected one of the German soldiers present who made it back to his base before turning and who was experimented on and then used as a sire to create more Uber vampires for the Reich.

Next one was done last weekend and is actually the second version I did (the first using a static body) after receiving some new historical 1/35 figures with more dynamic poses.

It is a movie style Karl Ruprect Kroenen, using the Pulp War 35 masked officer head, a resin body from Darius Miniatures, and a right hand and blades from an old GW Empire kit.

I was relatively pleased with the first version but the pose was very static and the figure from Darius Miniatures presented the opportunity to make a much more dynamic version of Kroenen, so I scavenged the head and hands from my previous attempt.

I'm happy with how this one came out.

Now, this keeps coming back to nag at me and I *could* try to cut it off and replace it with a pistolholster instead, but it's going to be fiddly to do and blood might get spilled, so I'd like to see what the general idea is on this.

You do not need to remove it entirely, just greenstuff it into a more general looking bag (maybe remove some parts to avoid it being too big).

Or -in case you really want him to be equipped with an SMG too- you can just put the Mp-40 onto his base as if he just dropped it or put it down.

Not a bad idea, but I don't really want him to be equipped with that, as the original character reference only had a pistol and the blades. So a bag/pouch it is.

Another kitbash to come out of my session using the Pulp War 35 headsprue is this Baron Zemo (Heinrich Zemo, not the modern day heir), using the hooded head and a German officer body from a Jaguar figures resin set. This is actually my second at building this character as receiving this new body inspired me to decapitate and redo the first session. The set is called "general inspection" and has a German officer in an opulent wool coat, reminiscent of Zemo's heir in the recent marvel show. So in combination with the Pulp War 35 hooded head, I present you the ultimate pulp Nazi overlord! I'm ridiculously pleased with this one although the conversion was a really simple one.

After Project Ragna Rok  that would bring Hellboy into this world got thwarted by the Allies, the Thule Society wanted to make a second attempt to contact Eldritch powers. They sent General Klaus Werner von Krupt, present during the first attempt. They thought they could do it without Rasputin. They thought wrong.

In a way, the ritual was successful and for the barest flicker of a second, they made contact with an otherworldly plane of existence. Nobody knows exactly who or what reached out into our world and touched the minds of the Thule members who were there. All we know is that that brief ephemeral touch warped them, mind and body, and burned away what little shreds of humanity they had left...

This is one of the poor soldiers who was present. This conversion used all bits I had lying around, an unidentified 1/35 resin German body and some bits from a plastic GW nurgle demon sprue. The nurgle heads and arms are a perfect size for 1/35. I still need to fill a few gaps on this, especially the back of the head, but it's pretty clear what it'll look like

Following up on that failed ritual described in my last post, this is wat remains of Von Krupt himself. I'm getting strong Guillermo del Toro-ish vibes off this one and I quite like it, though it's a bit more "weird" than most of my other stuff. Still needs a bit of cleanup.

Love it! The perspective of the first photo made me think he was flashing a rude gesture at my face though lol
