Title: Mythic Greece
Post by: marko.oja on November 21, 2009, 09:35:11 AM
Varnishing aside, I finally managed to finish the bulk of my "Greek Myth" project.

Light amazons
(http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/203/amazlt.jpg) (http://img694.imageshack.us/i/amazlt.jpg/)

Heavy amazons
(http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/9829/amazhvy.jpg) (http://img136.imageshack.us/i/amazhvy.jpg/)

Satyrs
(http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/6964/centa.jpg) (http://img690.imageshack.us/i/centa.jpg/)

Skeletons
(http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/6793/skeke2.jpg) (http://img145.imageshack.us/i/skeke2.jpg/)

And some "moving terrain", very much inspired by Matakishi
(http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/557/animalsj.jpg) (http://img690.imageshack.us/i/animalsj.jpg/)

Minis from Eureka (amazons, skeletons, satyrs and ox) and Amazon (all other animals). The animals were great fun to paint, so I guess I'll get more.

I love what you've done. Makes me want to strip my down and repaint them properly.

Nice work - I really like the color scheme on the amazons and the armor on the skeletons!

The skeletons are particularly nice, I wasn't aware of their existence either, more for the 'sometime' list.

Thanks all,

you can find the skeletons at http://eurekamin.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=87_126_178&products_id=2087

Just a small warning - those are almost as fiddly to put together as your starship crew. However, I noticed that if you accidentally mix epoxy glue and superglue together you end up with something that can stick just about anything together. The bad part is that the stuff smells so bad it brings tears to your eyes and probably melts the rest of your brain-cells...

I tried to stick to a limited palette on everything and finally figure out how to paint fleshtones. Amazon skin is VMC Dark flesh washed with GW Ogryn Flesh, highlighted with another layer of flesh and white. White clothes are GW Dheneb Stone + white, purple is GW Hormagaunt Purple + white. The oxidized armour was ridiculously easy to do: painted the armour black, drybrushed with VGC Tinny Tin and VMC Brass, then painted on very watered down VGC Jade Green, adding white to that a bit more each time (about 4-5 layers).

Very nicely painted, and I like the "sensible style" the Amazons got. Wearing clothes and all that, y´know.

I love the animals. Well, actually I like all of your stuff. However, the little details like the animals make a collection special.

Beautifully painted figures! I wonder how the Eurekas

fit in with these from Shadow Forge:

They look compatible in terms of anatomy, equipment etc, the only question is the size of the respective ranges. I quite fancy getting some ShadowForge sometime in the future for a fantasy/VSF type "lost" army and if Eureka's work with them, then  ;D

They might even be by the same sculptor.

Quite possible - they are both Aussie companies after all.

I'd like to see a couple side-by-side to get an idea of compatibility.

It's a long way to order from Aus, without being sure of the figures.

Oooooh! Nice. Very nice. Can we see them in a scenic setting for the full effect?

Why not, just don't hold your breath - I haven't even started putting together any suitable terrain...

Very cool!  I've been wondering if there were any companies that did Undead Hopolites.   :D

Great job Marko! How did you get the nice flesh on the satyrs?

VGC Tan base, wash with GW Ogryn Flesh, repaint VGC Tan and highlight by adding VMC Flat Flesh if I remember correctly. The main object of painting these was to figure out how to paint flesh tones, and I figured that the two factions would be easier to distinguish on the table if the flesh tones were different.

The skeletal hoplites are really nice, and quite cheap as all Eureka minis are, but as I said, somewhat difficult to put together. Another thing that should be pointed out is that they are a bit taller than the satyrs (3mm perhaps).

I still need a couple of centaurs and suitable monsters. I have six centaurs from Eureka, but not sure if I want to use them as they are - from the waist up - practically the same sculpts as the satyrs... Maybe Black Hat Shattered Isles centaurs, but I think they look a bit too bulky in the pictures. Maybe its just the pictures.

That's a very good looking set, Marko. You should come and visit us in Sweden with that.

Heh, maybe I will - got any cons coming up? I do practically all my gaming nowadays in Kustavi and Turku (Åbo to you swedish speakers), which is almost on your side anyway ;)

No cons that I am aware of. Those which exist rarely put on games which I am interested in (D&D, 40K and such things). Mattias, I and Col. Stone were talking about doing a LAF meet (we've had one before). I think I can rustle up a couple of other old hands to. Out of curiosity: do you speak any Swedish?
