Title: 15mm round bases - help!
Post by: Fjodin on December 02, 2009, 10:15:22 AM
I've maid a huge order of 15mm VSF minis (my first 15mm VSF ever). I want to use them for scirmish (just like 28mm minis) on round bases. And I have only 1 question. What round bases to use? (Where to buy, what size)

I use small washers.

Here is an option:

20mm plastic bases (10 for 50 cents GBP) from Hasselfree Miniatures.  They use them for mounting their little kid sculpts and are rather nice, though they do have a slot.

Here's another link for you. These are the bases I use, not the cheapest compared to the above but good quality and good service.

Sorry about the size of my photos but these are some of my ACW-VSF Union Iron Brigade based on the 25mm miniature by Brigade Games:

Electro Cannon and crew:

Airbourne Infantry:

US Steam Powered Rocketeers. Again, based heavily on the Brigade Games Models:

Finally, some of my Confederate Mono-Cyclist:

The reason I chose washers over our Australian 5 cent coin is that I made up movent and travel trays using large fridge magnets (year calenders from real estate agents).

They're all conversions using 15mm Essex Miniatures for the most part.

I have some more items along with a write up of how I made some of them here if you're interested:

Where did you get this Wild Wild West style Spider-Walker?

Try e-bay, you can usually find one on there from time to time. Some of the chaps on this forum have carried out some quite clever conversions on them.

Thanks Mate  :D

The Spider is a Burger King toy given away when the movie Wild Wild West was released in cinemas. Unfortunately Hungry Jacks, the Australian version of Burger King didn't do this promotion so I've had to get all mine off eBay. I've found they're getting harder to find, probably due to us VSF gamers  lol

I first seen them on the GASLIGHT Yahoo Group and even though they were being used for 28mm games knew, I had to have one for 15mm. I cut the legs down a little to make the height a little more reasonable in 15mm.

I use 15mm round ply bases from Fenris.

http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/Fenris-Games_Laser-cut-ply_W0QQ_fsubZ1040988013QQ_sidZ55776203QQ_trksidZp4634Q2ec0Q2em322

Doesn't look like he's got any in that size listed at the moment, but geronimo is a nice chap and has always been able to sort me out with whatever weird ply base sizes I've needed when I ask nicely :)

These are some 15mm sci-fi minis from GZG on Fenris 15mm round ply bases (with all apologies for by ability to take photos!)

URRA! 15mm Minis from Eurika Miniatures Australian Shop and http://15mm.co.uk/ have arrived! (Actually there was some irregular 2mm infanry/cavalry/terrain for Land Ironclads)

The only bad thing is there is no single VSF/Colonial 15mm line with ALL minis from ALL countries of late 19 century. Even Irregular Miniatures which have huge range of 19 century have Colonial Range have different level of detail and proportions in dofferent ranges.
For example I've ordered:

* US troops from AB 15mm ACV range (superb detail level and realistic propotyins)

* Prusians are from Irregular 1870 – 1918 range (good detail too and very close to realistic propotions)

* Russians and Japanese from Irregular Russo-Japanese War range (good detail, realistic proportions, but size of troops a little bit smaller that AB US troops and 1870 – 1918 range Prussians. But they are only A LITTLKE BIT smaller. So you can easily put these minis together on game table)

* Brits are from Irregular Colonials range. (Good level of detail too, but they proportions are a little bit caroony. Actually I love cartoony proportions very much! But for example my Prussians. I think my favourite mini in Irregular Colonial range is British sailor in straw hat.)

* Pony Wars range (http://15mm.co.uk/Pony_Wars.htm) Gunfighter in duster with Shotgun and White Woman in Bonnet have a little bit cartoony proportions, and very good!

* Civilian Irregular on Horse from here http://15mm.co.uk/ACW_Cavalry.htm

* Irregular 19 century civilians have level of detail, size and proportions between Russians in 1870 – 1918 range range and many of Colonial range figures.

For example this person http://15mmvsf.bagofmice.com/vsf/battles.htm (This was one of 3 sites which opened VSF world doors for me!) have 15mm minis from Old Glory and Frontier from their Boxer Rebellion range.

But I dont think its too bad that different range and manufacturers 19 century minis have a little bit different proportions. Today I showed my neewly arrived minis to my friend and he was not notice the little vary of proportion :)

I am into 15mm since a very short time (not VSF) and I started casting my own bases: this way I have made a 9 mm base with the best shape for fitting minis, this way
      _                           _
    /  |________________| \
  /______________________\

now my minis have the same look as the 28-30 mm of warhammer or similar. That's cute!

I think that is the best way, but you need to have silicon rubber and resin for mould casting... if you haven't, the 1P solution is pretty nice! :)

OK! And what type of bases would you recomend for 15mm cavalry in scirmish games?

well.. dunno the type of coins in your country, but... if you have any big cheap coin, you can use it, otherwise you can use... or lotr bases (a bit shorter than other gw) or nice and inoxidable "rondella":

I am not sure which bases are best: round or rectangular?

http://www.brigademodels.co.uk/NoFrames/ACC/Items/ACC-008.html
For round bases for me will be good to use this 25mm sloted bases (because I use 20mm sloted round bases for infantry). But with rectangulars... I dont know any bases of that type, but its only bacause I am NEW in 15mm wargaming.

Post by: Sangennaru on January 12, 2010, 10:52:42 PM
it depends on the type of game: with rect bases you can handle battalions and big unit at the best, if you have a skirmish game, round is much suitable

for me the round has also a much better look, and i uwe them for any kind of non-playable miniature, even for 15mm :)

I like round bases to.

For my regular cavalry I use the same washers as my infantry. When basing cavalry I put two washers side by side, place a longer piece of tape over the holes and using super glue, glue the base of the horse over the holes.

More pictures can be viewed in the Confederacy and Union folders at the following link: http://www.displacedminiatures.com/Barry%20S/galleries/

For my Generals, etc, I use slightly larger washers.

I buy them from builder suppliers or places like Bunnings.

Hope this helps.

Barry

The boxer dog was a small plastic toy my Mum thought I may be able to use.

As it happens one of my wifes favorite pets was a boxer and I had finished painting a miniature up to represent my wife, as she plays BAB with me from time to time, so I added it to the base.
