Title: Force Publique (The FP vs the Big Ape UPDATE Jan 19)
Post by: mortimer on December 02, 2009, 07:26:31 PM
This is my first experience painting miniatures. I'm working on it for the last two months... reading forums, tutorials... and in the photo some of the minis... not a very detailed and realistic work, but I think it's OK just for wargaming play purposes... ,D what do you think?

I think minis are so difficult!!!! well, It's practice and practice... I suppose.

My first mounted (in a mule...) and the last of this group... There is some differences in the tones of the mule in the middle, but it's a light effect taking the photo -the real tone is the same in both sides of the animal, and more bluish-

Good start! Force Publique are getting popular around here. Ray Rivers was showing some not long ago, and inspired by him I'm trying to finish off my force at the moment too.

The bases? I see your one base has some texture on it. That looks good. Next perhaps some dry-brushing over it in a lighter colour, and maybe a little grass?

Hats off!
Well done if they are your first figures and a nice choice too.

I think they look great. Better than alot of my stuff and I've been painting for years. Myself, I'm not a fan of the slotted bases. I prefer pennies as they take up less room. Just my 2 cents worth..

I like them too! Very good indeed for a first effort, I reckon!!

I agree with the advice about the bases. I do mine with sand glued on with PVA. When dry, I then give it a diluted brown ink wash. When that's dry I drybrush with GW 'Bleached bone'. See my 'NW Frontier' thread for an example (the 2 British infantry were done with this style). I also stick a patch or two of static grass on after varnishing to break up the sand effect...

Great, I've also got some Force Publique in the pipeline, great show and wonderful looking figures. I like the fact that with a different paint scheme you've been able to use two of the same miniature.

Thanks!

You should be happy! They are better than my figures and I've been painting for about 37 years  lol

You'll find it gets easier as you develop routines and learn the tricks of the trade. Also it should get a lot quicker, so you'll get more done and that will help give a greater sense of achievement.

Keep posting your work  :)

He's fantastic. A great sculpt with a lot of character, and you're given him a worthy paint job.

Got to agree with all of the above. Great first attempt :-*
You need to do the base to finish it off. Mix a little sand into some PVA glue (White glue) and paste it onto the top of the base and fill in the hole.
or
Fill in the hole with filler. Paint PVA glue all around the top of the base and then dip into some sand. Use your finger to clean around the side of the base before it drys.

When it is dry, paint it as required.

Nice group of Belgian chaps you have there.

You are doing great, and just think, after painting another 4,000 miniatures, you probably will be the best painter in the joint!
