Title: The Daleks Have Landed!
Post by: Plynkes on April 24, 2007, 02:44:50 PM
Not sure if Doctor Who is something you European and American chaps were brought up on, but here's a report to do with it anyway. So you have the option to either bathe in childhood nostalgia, or laugh at what us silly Brits considered to be entertainment in the 60s and 70s:

Ich erinnere mich that my family seemed to have gone through a Tom Baker phase back in the day, to the point where an uncle got a hand-made Tom Baker scarf for Christmas. Later in college I attempted to enjoy the series, largely to no effect.

All that aside, it looks like a fun game. I suppose Sickly will remember Minimum Safe Distances for the bazooka from now on.

More great stuff, I've just repainted by old Tardis and I'm waiting on one of our players here to get his Cybermen done.  :)

I like the Land Rover and the U.N.I.T. chaps, it all looks like great fun.

God, I just LOVE the basic Dalek design. In the late 90s, German TV station "Vox" squandered some Dr. Who episodes in ridiculous time slots (weekday mornings), so I never saw them, but when I first visited England (read London) in 1993, I bought a modelling magazine which featured a neat conversion article on a Comet Dalek kit.

Oh, and see those. I just LOVED them and faved the pics ASAP:

Awesome Polynikes. I only caught the odd episode of the original Dr. Who as it only played on Saturday afternoons on one of those stations that I only got reception for when the sun and planets were aligned right.

I love the new series and have watched the first two seasons of it.

Thanks for sharing.

Revford, do you play the actual Invasion Earth rules? I don't suppose you happen to have the stats for Cybermen, do you?

When I bought my Sea Devils, Silurians and Autons they came with little sheets that gave you their stats and game rules. But I got my Cybermen in a plastic bag at a show I think, and they had no rules with them.

I'm sure there used to be rules stuff on Black Tree's site, but I can't seem to find it any more.

Seeing these takes me back to the 1970's :)
Always wished I had bought the game and figures, but never got around to it :(

It's still available according to the Black Tree website, Malamute. As are the figures.

We don't have the Invasion Earth rules, sorry I can't help on that one.

I've had The Doctor (Tom Baker) and the Tardis for years, it's gotten plenty of table time in Weird War and Pulp games, but I've yet to have a game against the Cybermen.

The current plan is to use .45 Adventure, keep is small and as mostly a run from the monsters type game.

The good part of playing time traveller characters is we can pull out any historical, modern or scifi models to fill out the cast.  :)

Plynkes- Thanks, I knew the figures were still available, but didn't realise the rules were as well .I will check them out now.   :)

Its worth mentioning Matakishi's Alien Invasion rules, I know he has been working on them for a while. So if anybody is looking for an alternative set, speak to him :)

Excellent battle report! :)
I quite like "Beer and Pretzels" games and Invasion Earth sounds quite a laugh. I think you may have got my interest and I can see an order going to Black Tree shortly.
I'm a bit miffed as I sold a large set of plastic 28mm Daleks and Cybermen a while ago. The Daleks were in kit form and very cool.
Just for info, apparently Old Crow are possibly going to do a re-run of the clear resin Tardis that Ainsty used to do.

I remember those plastic Daleks and Cybermen. They were made by Games Workshop years and years ago. I used to go to GW in Birmingham (the old one in the Bull Ring). In those days you could buy things not actually made by them in there, too. All sorts of RPGs and supplements, and they had a bargain bin filled with wondrous precious things. Another world when you think about it.

I remember looking at that boxed set, and thought "I must get that one of these days". Must have walked past that shop countless times and put off getting it every time. Never did get it, and of course it then went OOP.

Damn! Damn! What a bloody fool am I!

Don't Sweat It Poly, they were very small by today's standards. The Cybermen would be unusable with any modern figures.

Plynkes- Do you know what are the contents of the box for the Invasion earth game?
I have looked on the Black Tree Design website and the game is showing up as being on offer for circa £10.  :) But it does not give  description of the box contents.
It sounds like great value for money, considering most of the packs of figures are £19.99 for  6 figs.

The contents of the box that I bought:

The Rule book
6 UNIT troops
4 Daleks
Blast and fire arc/movement templates ,
Some flimsy cardstock building ruins (which are still sitting untouched in the box)
A couple of D6s
And I think an errata sheet.

Bear in mind that I bought the original Harlequin game when it first came out. I have no idea if Black Tree have changed the contents or not since taking over.

Plynkes- Thanks for that. If the contents are still as described its a bargain. :)  :)

It's funny, I painted up those Doctor Who figures years ago, we played the game twice and then it was all forgotten until now. It was the combination of the young 'un coming to stay (and wanting to play something) and the Daleks being on this week's Doctor Who that made me go and dig out all my old stuff.

Now I'm completely back into the idea of Who gaming, so much so that I, like you chaps, have been greedily eyeing up the the Black Tree site. I'm gonna get some more Daleks (I want four of each of my favourite colour schemes), and some Sontarans too. What else, I'm not quite sure, but loads of those figures will make interesting quirky characters for any kind of Sci-Fi game.

I am going to have to exercise some serious restraint if I'm to avoid a huge credit card bill next month!

Plynkes,
Do you know about these totally free Dr Who rules? They cover everything up to the 10th Doctor, with absolutely tonnes of stat cards etc.
Really worth a look for any Who fan!

I wasn't totally aware of them (but I haven't really been on a Doctor Who kick until this week, so they may have been floating around the periphery of my consciousness), but some kind soul on TMP pointed them out to me yesterday.

Yes, I'm such an attention-whore that I linked to my blog on TMP, too. Hope the Lead Adventurers don't think I'm betraying them!  :)

But it don't hurt to be told twice. Thanks for that. Haven't had a real good look yet, but I plan to.

Guys, What about Matakishi's Alien Invasion rules. I have been looking at them on his Blog today?

Now the decision has to be do I go for the Black Tree Design UNIT figures and have that retro 70's look or, as Matakishi did go for TAG modern Brits as UNIT. Such  decisions!

And Whilst Jon Pertwee was my favourite Dr I am definately going to use my own Dr Who  figure representing David Tennant. He is being cast up at present so anyone that wants one, let me know. :)

That's a real big question, Grimm, since the Daleks have been going since 1963 and built up a huge history over the years (which often contradicts itelf). To Brits of a certain age, Doctor Who and the Daleks are an ingrained part of our culture. I grew up with them, they were a cherished part of my childhood, and I still think they are really cool. At its height in the 1960s the "DALEKMANIA" craze was almost as big as "BEATLEMANIA."

Rather than try and tell you all about them myself, the lazy thing to do would be for me to just link to the Wikipedia entry on them, so that's what I'll do!  :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalek

Here's quite a cool clip from a recent series that shows one in action (they weren't always this cool):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwvACx3Zlvs

And just for Grimm, a German Dalek:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVjvlJao7os
I wonder why they gave the German Dalek such a silly baby voice? Doesn't really inspire much terror, does it?

Finally, a musical montage of the Daleks in action over the years:

As Terry Nation's original concept of the Daleks was 'Robotic Nazis in Space' then I think it is only fitting that my Daleks scream "Vernichten! Vernichten!" from now on instead of the old "Exterminate!", which has become a little tired.

"I Obey!" and "We are the Superior Beings!" were another two of their regular Nazi-style slogans.

I would second that recomendation for

http://www.drwhominiatures.co.uk/index.html

There are new scenarios added on a regular basis and there is also a Yahoo group supporting them.

If Black Tree are doing the boxed starter sets at a bargain price that's unbeatable, but I had heard that they were discounting them because they didn't include figures any more. Has anyone checked on this ?

Back on the thought of the original Terry Nation script, I seem to recall that the BBC approached Ridley Scott to direct that first Dalek series but he was already booked so had to turn it down.

I think Ridley Scott was supposed to help design the Daleks, rather than direct the series. But I may be mistaken.

Just received my order from BlackTree design.
I can confirm that the starter set does include Dalek minis and UNIT troopers!
Because they took a bit of time dispatching my order they gave me a bit of a bonus...........A copy of the rules signed by TOM BAKER ( yehhaaaa!).

I've ordered another ruleset as I won't be using the signed one!

Superb, also very lucky indeed.

Even if you only want the Daleks it's a better deal to buy the game at the moment.
