I am building a couple of buildings for VSF games. The first one is a colonial type house.

I am looking for some help with the roof.
I have three choices
Plain wooden roof – basically as is but with some battens to mark out the individual panels of the roof.
Corrugated Iron roof – I have a load of corrugated card I could use.
Tiled roof – use thin card to make the tiles
The question is what do you think is the best option.
-
I think you need to determine Where it will typically be found, deep frontier , nearer towns etc. The roof material would be more permanent, heavier built near towns. Im thinking Corrugated metal though would be just the ticket, and differ it from so many shingled roofs floating about :)
-
Yes, I've also pondered the origins of corrugated metal: it's been around since mid 1800s I believe, so go for it :)
I'd also suggest some more supports closer to the steps as it appears to be sagging a little. Doesn't appear to be happening around the entire house, might just be the angle :)
I really like this, very peculiar design.
Can't wait to see it finito
-
Nice work GM. :)
In my humble opinion I would use corrugated iron as it seems to pop up all over the colonies.
-
Super construction, I can not wait to see it finished. :-* :-*
for the roof, I would put corrugated iron
-
hmmm
You chose stone walls - how about copper plating?
-
Very cool! how did you do the stone work? Is it High density foam?
-
Christian
I think it is just the picture. I have rechecked it and it looks straight in real life.
Do you think it is a peculiar design? I though it look quite representative of the type of building I was after. I looked through the web for some pictures and this was a simplified version of what I found.
former user
I have scribed the foam board to represent wooden planks. Only the corner pillars are going to be stone.
Traveller
The stone work is cut out of high density foam, pink stuff from B&Q.
All
It looks like I will be covering the roof in corrugated iron.
Thanks Guys
-
Thats brilliant gM. I think it captures the feel perfectly. Corrugated roofing will look good and fit in but I would have perhaps tried for a woven matting type of affair
-
My vote is for corrogated iron. It was used in many colonies but photo's of South Africa show it everywhere.
-
That's looking lovely. Will you be doing the inside?
Corrugated iron roofing will be very good, especially for an industrialised South African mining community or similar. For a tea planatation I think I'd have gone for rattan or something similarly fiborous but whatever you choose it's going to be nice.
-
I agree the thatch type roof may look good as well but I think it is harder to achieve the right look. I think an iron roof will be easier.
As for doing the inside, I intend for the roof to lift off so that figures can be placed inside but apart from painting the floor to look like wood and painting the walls I don't intend to do anything else.
-
With a removeable roof you could always make an alternative rattan one afterwards and have a building for duel locations?
-
Very Nice!!and very usefull for a wide variety of locations,as an officer's or overseers bungalow.I can see a couple of those types having they're evening Gin and tonic on the veranda when a they get word of the latest native uprising!

Genius.
-
Very nice and versatile design ; can't wait to see it painted.
meow,
Matt
-
that's really nice! where do those bricks are from? :)
great work, can't wait seeing it finished
-
Sangennaru
The bricks are just scribed to to high density pink foam.
-
Sorry I'm late!
This is beautiful, I love it. :-*
Go with the iron roof, but Svennn's suggestion is good too, make 'em interchangeable.
-
Done some more work on my colonial house
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/4/1912_30_12_09_1_22_00_0.JPG)
put some planks on the walkway and done some of the ground work around the house.
Covered the roof in corrugated card board.

Now I just a fence and some posts around the walkway, then on to painting.
Not sure what colours I am going to paint the whole thing yet?
-
Holy mackerel!
That's turning out beautifully! :-*
-
I'm late again, but that looks lovely. I'm sure it will be splendid once finished!
I assume all you've done with the corrugated card is to peel one layer of the covering off?
As an aside, I'd like to do some pantile roofs for Mexican style adobe buildings and was wondering if this method might give a suitable result.
Bear in mind:
a) I'm useless at any sort of complicated modelling
b) I'm skint, so tend to mainly use card buildings and
c) I don't have a great deal of spare time
so anything involving ready-made resin etc, building each tile by hand or using tools more deadly than a Stanley knife is out of the question :(
-
They still build stuff in (roughly) that pattern in South Africa; wide verandah, big windows and a metal roof make sense in a hot climate even these days.
They usually seem to be white, with the brick either left bare or painted/plastered white, and coloured trim.
Is the corrugated roof done with crafting paper? Been meaning to get some of that for roofing from one of the scrapbooking stores in town.
-

No I bought this card from hobbycraft. Quite cheap for the packet of 4 off A4 sheets. They call it Corduroy. It also come in various colours.
It comes looking like this, no peeling involved.
I am not sure it would work as well for tiles as it does have a flat sheet on the back.
-
I like this a lot :D All you need now is a rocking chair on the veranda ;)
cheers

Sounds interesting. I don't think the card backing would be too off-putting. The fact that it would be quick and easy to use is a big plus. I'll definitely bear it in mind when I eventually get to do a Hacienda.

Thanks guys.

Not sure how I would make one of them ??? A bit fiddly and fragile if I did manage.
Not getting much done my garage, where I work, is freezing.

Aye, this is a thing of beauty! Looking forward to seeing it painted. I trust the wily natives will br crawling under the verandah to sneak up to attack from all angles!
-
Bloody brilliant ;D
Now the little bits of dteail are going on, its coming alive, i love it. :-*
-
Very nice. I am already imagining a snake crawling out from under the verandah!
-
Splendid work GM. Wack a palm tree or a colonial looking bush next to it and Bob's your uncle! ;)
-

Try dolls house furniture, it's not all 1/12 -1/24

That really looks the business, Colin :)
Now, how long to make the entire town? ;)
-
thanks guys
-
Oh, splendid! :)
Great build, great following the thread. When you've done the final fix, can we please see in situ with some figures?
-
I concur with everything said so far. Lovely. :-*

That does have a very nice feel to it :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
Love it! It came out great!
-
That a really nice building. Nice work man! 8)
-
Excellent house! What did you use for the grating/lattice under the walkway?
-
The latice is plastic embroidery squares. I got a packet of five from hobbybase for a couple of pounds. Squares are about 3" square.
-
STUNNING WORK MAC :o :o
-
Very good work. Really top notch!
I like your roofing skills. I may have to talk to you when it comes time to do my Boxer Rebellion buildings' roofs. lol
-
:-* :-* :-* :-* o_o
Agreed!
-
I was asked for a picture with figures for scale.

Oooh, nice. :-*
-
Oh yes that hits the spot GM. Now I'm getting the urge to drink a Singapore Sling on the veranda!
-
echoing what everyone else said. Very inspirational. :)
-
Indeed, it is a splendid building. Just a few miniature flowers/veg etc in the garden would set it off to perfection.
-
Just brilliant.
Does anyone do a figure of someone taking a G&T in a rattan chair? Would go perfectly here! :)
-
Fantastic work :D :D :D :D

Don’t know what happened to the colour in the last photo.
Now on to painting VSF figures.

Nice!
That is a might fine house. Very atmospheric! I'm sure it will get a lot of use!
-
Interchangable veggies :D Cool :D

James
-
:-* That will make an awesome centre piece!
-
Perfecto mundo. :-* :-* :-*
Nice to see the design 28's painted up too.
-
The plantation owner and his foreman.

Very nice and easy figures to clean up and paint, not like the Perry one which was murder.
-
Or a nice cup of tea!! Picture the Foundry colonial chap with his cuppa and the cricket bat holding chappie. Then again one of the seated Victoria's daughters with the African fellow carrying the drinks tray would fit. Perhaps a conversion of the seated adventurer to hold a glass/cup rather than a revolver. Look in the Dark Continent or the Adventurers packs for suitable figures.
Oh yes that hits the spot GM. Now I'm getting the urge to drink a Singapore Sling on the veranda!
-
Its a stunning model Colin. I really like the small details, like the flowers and the trellis under the house. Love it! ;D :-*
-
and the trellis under the house.
Cant't have the native chaps crawling under the boards what!!

That has turned out even better than I hoped when I saw the first post :o
Maybe that pic was taken during a spectacular African sunset? ;)
The chap in the smoking jacket and fez is naggingly familiar, but I just can't place him. Ironclad maybe?
Cant't have the native chaps crawling under the boards what!!
It's the private soldiers scrabbling about for secret supplies of whiskey you need to guard against ;)
-

It's a young John McCririck.
-
As Svenn said
Perfecto mundo. :-* :-* :-*
Nice to see the design 28's painted up too.
Very nice small range of Victorian figures. There was a thread about them a couple of months ago. I will see if I can find it, if you are interested?
-
Lovely. Those rose bushes are a really nice touch. :-*
-
It's a young John McCririck.
That's put me off him, for some reason :?
lol
-
OK, now I know where I've seen this building before.
It's a house two streets away! Really, an exact duplicate of that great scratch build is a block away from me, in 1/1 scale. :D
Everything exact, save for this one's roof is the same style, but aluminum sheets.
LOL! I kept thinking about thi9s thread, and now I know why.
