This first picture is of me in my England soccer shirt painting a layer of white on a building using a dabbling technique.
The second picture is the front of the building I was working on. It has had three layers: a layer of texture, a layer of wood glue for protection, and a layer of white paint for color. It looks cool but was really hard to paint due to the multiple arches.
The third picture is the back side of the building in the last picture. We have five buildings put together but all are a work in progress with up to 0-3 layers so far.
The fourth picture is one of the simplest buildings me and my dad have put together. It is a simple rectangle with one door and a sunken roof. I wish dad would make more easy ones like this.
The fifth picture has several stories and two doors. We do not recommend you move into any of these houses because the doors and windows are covered up with clear tape.

If he did that how would he keep you occupied ;)
-
Those look great - I'd like to see a good photo of the building with the staircase and curved sections, it lurks in the background of several photos!
The texture looks perfect, what did you use as the texture layer?
Malamute and others have been doing some great buildings very similar to yours, check the Old West forum especially. (I'll post links later if nobody beats me to it, have to keep this short as I'm still at work...)
-
Looking good! I need some of those buildings.
-
Some very nice buildings there, reminds me that I need to do some myself soon.... along with all the other projects....
One suggestion, when you do the texture layer, see if you can work more onto the corners. It would help cover the join line between the two foam walls.
-
Nice Wolfgirl :)I fear confusion may arise between us........ o_o ;) lol
-
Nice job!
Looking forward to more photos as you progress.
And... welcome to the forum, btw.
-
Very nice, neat looking buildings.
Especialy like the arched one.
Good first post. Welcome to the forum.
What games are the buildings going to be used for?
-
Nice Wolfgirl :)I fear confusion may arise between us........ o_o ;) lol
don't be too afraid ;)
@wolfgirl, these are very neat buildings - Your dabbing technique looks very convincing and the arches are really cut perfect!
welcome to the forum - are You a wargaming family?
I somehow have the feeling that "dad" is here already ;)
may I humbly suggest to add to the perfection of Your buildings by making the seams of the foamboard disappear (like Dewbakuk already suggested)?
I know this problem, it comes from the material difference between the surface and the core of the foamboard.
If cutting the edges to join in a 45° angle is not an option and evening out with filler too much work, covering the foam parts with thin paper glued with a stiff glue and then sanding the thinner seams helps.
please keep us posted

Nice avatar Wolfgirl :)
May the Wolf Walk With You,Always.
-
Welcome aboard, young lady! Keep up the good work. Like a couple of members have mentioned, the wall joints created by gluing foam core boards together can be unsightly. You might want to invest in a Rabbet Cutter. It slices off a thin strip along the edge of the board so the corners are recessed and you don't have any exposed foam to worry about. Here's a couple of available styles. I have one similar to the blue version.
-
Nice work and welcome to the forum too! I too would like to know what game they are for.
-
The buildings are for a game that my dad does, he calls it Pulp Alley.
Thanks for the tips and ideas! We'll be sure to try those out.
We're going to see Avatar tonight so there won't be more pictures for a couple days.
-
Welcome to the forum!
They look really nice, very neatly painted and obviously very well put together. You've got quite a town growing there.
I wish my Dad was into war gaming... I'll get him hooked, yet! Good on the both of you for such a splendid job. Looking forward to seeing how it all looks when it's done.
-
Okay, we're up to nine new buildings glued together. Unfortunely, painting has fallen behind scedule. I had to give Wolf Girl a few days off, as I can't afford another union strike. And here are some new pics --

Again, beautiful work!! :-*

very nice stuff !

-
great great great
keep up the good work and merry christmas :)
-
Bravo to you young lady. your work is splendid. all my compliments :-* :-* :-*
-
Looks good. I wish I could get my daughters to paint and make terrain for me, however, they are more interested in boys then in toy soldiers.
-
let them recruit the boys who then paint and make terrain for You ;)
-
Inspirational! I must begin to build foam core buildings! They look so convincing.
Please, what was the texture that you used?
Thomas
-
Welcome to the forum, Wolf Girl!
Fantastic work on the buildings!!
How do you and your dad make those perfect arches?
I'd also second getting a rabbit cutter. It's a true lifesaver.
And look out for Greywolf's pack... you really don't want to run them. :D
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!
-
Ah, another fan (or I suppose two>?) of foamcore buildings. They're looking very swell. There needs to be a couple of building-to-building bridges and undie-lines for all the village's (?) old nannies' panties.
On another note: where does every keep getting that specific lot of cacti? They're so fine and simple I could use with a bunch to hide in my foliage bins.
-
Here you go, Bako.

Imex also makes some for their Alamo series. Mixing the two gives a good variety of sized cactus.
-
I am really curious about those arches.
Does anyone know how it was done?
-
Thin cardboard should be ok for the inside of that, it bends fine and since its on the inside of the arch it wouldn’t need to be that sturdy. Cutting it in the arch shape can be harder, never worked with foamcore, so I cant give advice on that.
-
Excellent work so far! Awesome how you have the family team going in on this project. My son wanted to help me with my Zombie board and all of a sudden we were adding laser cannons for the Space Marines and a landing pad for his Predator figures to land...Hey itll be one heck of a battle.
-
this is indeed difficult with thick materials
don't know how it was done here
I usually cut the straight sections with a ruler and try to do it perpendicular to the surface.
from the end of the cut I then follw the bend with a very narrow sharp blade, and again take care for a perpendicular cut.
But maybe Wolfgirl ha s abetter way to do it
-
I had to give Wolf Girl a few days off, as I can't afford another union strike.
lol
Great looking city y'all are putting together there!
-
Sorry I haven’t posted in a little while. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I really appreciate it. We are now using the rabbet joints on the buildings. We made 10 buildings now! I still have to work on five…
The arches (this is for you warrenss2) were made by taking an exacto blade around a metal washer that was about an inch and a quarter wide. And yes dad did use a ruler on the sides of the doorway.
The texture (Wirelizard and Mr. Peabody) was made by dabbling on a layer of elmer’s wood filler with a paint brush.
More to come.

Thanks so much for revealing your technique!
I'm learning a lot following this thread. :)
-
very interesting
hm... now I have to think where to get washers that big....
I am using a similar kind of blade
thx for the tutoring :)
-
Thanks, Wolf Girl! It always the simple, yet genius, methods that escape me for some reason.
Those buildings look like something out of a Gunda Din movie. Kind of middle east or Spanish type abode. Looks like they'll be able to serve multi-purposes. Always a good thing in miniature gaming.
@ former user - now I have to think where to get washers that big..... I know where your secret island base is, The Shadow told me... and he KNOWS. I also know there is a Lowes on the Mysterious Island. :D ;) :D
-
not that I would know of ;)
there are only hardware markets around that sell the more common sizes in bulk packs.
The only source I could think of is a specialized shop called "Schallenberg" when You can buy hardware by pieces.
-
You may try to address the guys involved with 1:1 scale trains. Hardware of that size is appearing there quite regularely. I'd be happy to provide, but I quit that hobby branch a year ago...
-
thx no contacts either, I'll see

The buildings in Gunga Din (1939) are great! A few decades ago I ruined a copy by pausing it over and over, just so I could sketch them. :-* I think the film was shot entirely in Arizona and California, so I wouldn’t claim they accurately represent India. But it’s close enough for PULP! lol
Along that same lines, this new series of buildings are all loosely based on photos we’ve collected from several different continents. So I am trying to keep the designs generic enough that they will pass for many different settings, as we span the globe seeking fortune and glory. :D
THANKS!

This is really inspiring. Thanks so much for the pics and the advice.

If you can't find any I have more than I'll ever want. Wouldn't mind dropping a few in the post for you. One of the advantages of a small machine shop on the family farm, more doodads, tridlins, and PVC piping than you need bobbing about. :)
-
Thank You very much :)
maybe You also have an anvil You don't need anymore and could drop it in an envelope and send it to Europe ;) ;) ;) 8) ?
appreciate the offer, but I'm sure I'll find some solution here
I'll be happy to drop by and visit the machine shop when I visit Vancouver some time in the future

Heh. Bako's a long drive from Vancouver... Vancouver-Creston is probably eight-ten hours+ by car, and he's only about 2/3rds of the way across this province. (going east-west; it's even bigger running north-south!) It's a very, very big country.
Thanks for the texturing info, wolfgirl & dphipps, and the archway construction tips. Even following a washer or other guide, my curve cuts never turn out as neat as the ones on your buildings!
-
thx, I noticed, but I think travelling customs adapt to the distances, or not? ;)
Or do canadians have to rediscover the north-west passage every time they want to get urban? ;)
what am I to do, I'm a petty old worlder who is used to getting everywhere by walking ;)
-
thx no contacts either, I'll see
I've got quite a few, pm me with your address and I'll post one out in an envelope
Nice buildings, great for DAK, pulp, Call of Cthulhu, wargods or even star wars! :D
The Commander
-
thx again - I'll remember this if in need
I've been using small washers as bases, but never was aware that such big ones are available
also useful for magnet sheets ;)
-
If it weren't for all those pesky mountains I think I would enjoy the occasional trip to the coast. Get some of that good ol' sea breeze I've not seen in, well... A number of years. You know, I've been all the way up to the top of BC but not further than Kelowna going west.
As for the anvil... Well, if you want to pay the ludicrous shipping that will come with a chink of metal that size... Naww, we still use that occasionally. lol
Actually, Creston is more like 3/4 of the way across and a stone's throw from the border. Petro and cheese is cheaper down there too. :)
Sorry for derailing your thread train!

Hey guys! Thanks for the posts! Today I finished painting the buildings in white and next they will be stained by my dad. In this first picture I’m texturing one of the more difficult buildings we’ve been working on. In the front there are three buildings that are almost done and have recently received there last layer of color by dad.
This next picture is of all ten of the buildings we have created in different stages of the coloring process. The lightest ones are the ones I did today. The tan ones, in the top right hand corner, have been stained. The ones that look like they’ve been to Tatooine are ready to have windows and doors added.
Here we show the last scene at a different angle. You can see the ramp of the building I had to paint the inside of, trust me when I say that was hard. That building was also the one I designed… My part is mostly done now. But I might help out with the doors and windows.
Be back soon. Wolf out. :D
-
Great work there, WG.
-
Pure wow. Inspired me to research Rabbit Cutters. Eventually I figured out what I really was looking for and managed to get one on sale today. ;)
EDIT: Templates would be most welcome if you have them to share!
-
Your village is really starting to flesh out. :)
-
Were these buildings drawn up, and measurements figured out, all on paper before the carving of foamcore?
I'm pretty new at making buildings and have no earthly idea how you did the steps atop that one building or the ramp behind that other building. At best all my work would look VERY blocky and clones of each other. :?
The Star Wars look never occurred to me at all! But I do keep expecting to see Indy Jones come tearing into the scene in a truck carrying a powerful religious artifact recently acquired from the evil Nazis!
Templates would be most welcome if you have them to share! - I second this!!! Most welcome indeed!!
-
the texturing gets better and better
I would like to see the finished colouring (like in the picture where You are behind them) in a better photograph please - it's marvellouus, but a bit dark to see properly
-
:-*
That's one heck'va building project.
Looks to be progressing superbly. Keep up the good work you guys! :D
;)
-
They look awesome, I think I should acquire some foamcore soon.
I’m actually making some buildings of a similar design, tough I am using cardboard and ungodly loads of texture paint for it.
Anyhow, some things you might find useful as well.
Making some plain buildings with some standardized side lengths, each half the size of the other. That way you can be stacked or placed side by side, allowing to represent even more different building styles.
Cutting a foam crafts globe in half, this can be placed atop buildings to make the half domes you might see in the more middle eastern villages.
-
Ummm... What sized fender washer did you use for those big arches? 2 or 2 1/2 inch?
You got my brain pan cooking up ideas already.
-
Were these buildings drawn up, and measurements figured out, all on paper before the carving of foamcore?
Heya Warrenss2 -- There is a building with 2" arches, but the tall one that has an arch through the middle is about 2.5". Making stairs with foamcore is fairly easy --
1. First cut out about 4-5 small pieces of foamcore (about 1" to 1-1/8" square).
2. Stack the squares and then scoot each piece back about 3/16" to 1/4" from the piece below it.
3. Mark some guidelines on each piece and glue everything in place.
For taller stairs, simply use more squares. Towards the middle of the second picture below is a little sketch of this idea.
Yes, I sketched out the basic ideas and tried to decide on dimensions prior to cutting anything out. Invariably something always changes a little along the way. I don’t really have templates as such, but here are some of my crude doodles:
THANKS!
-
I am quite sure you have a different definition of "crude doodles", sir. ;) I am wondering what it would take to convince you to turn some of those drawing into actual templates? And, or, if anyone has a link to a resource that has templates for making these sorts of model buidlings out of foam card?
-
I am wondering what it would take to convince you to turn some of those drawing into actual templates?
That would be sweet!!!!
Happy New Year!
-
These sorts of buildings are a bit of an obsession for me!! If you are interested in templates or city layout, feel free to get in touch. I have some photos at: artofwarterrain.com
-
very nice colors ,can´t wait to see the finish buildings .
cheers Grimm
-
Just wanted to add my kudos to this project.
I don't know which is better, the family aspect, or the awesome pieces coming out of it.
-
I don't know which is better, the family aspect, or the awesome pieces coming out of it.
Thanks Mr Borges, That's exactly what I thought !
Keep up the good work !

This is a great project - thanks for sharing! :-*
-
I’m back from Texas! Thanks for all the comments! I’ve been helping dad again along with school so I’m beat. This first picture is “Wolf Girl in the lair of the mad scientist doing his evil bidding.” :D The lighting was being mean so I had to take two rounds of pictures to do this post. (http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/100_0662.jpg)
This building is the first one we made. This is also my favorite building. I really love the chipped paint kind of look and the patterns it makes. (http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/100_0650.jpg)
We were aiming for that cool weathered look you see in Indiana Jones movies or around old Santé Fe. Check out that cool front door!
We have been working on the windows and doors since last post. The curtains that you sort of see in these pictures are the ones I made from pieces of paper. It was kind of hard making the curtains, fold after fold after fold after fold.
Be back soon!
Wolf Girl out.
-
yes, gorgeous, but how did You do this effect?
please?
-
This "spackled" (?) effect is superb - or "spackletacular", if you´ll excuse the pun. ;) I´m really, really looking forward to seeing the finished layout.
EDIT: Just noticed the curtains! CURTAINS! Behind such tiny windows! That is devotion to detail at it's very best - little pieces that add a great effect (sometimes at second glance) without being too fiddly to handle in a game (or for storage).
-
EDIT: Just noticed the curtains! CURTAINS! Behind such tiny windows!
noticed it now, too! respect!
-
The paint effect on the buildings is fantastic. The buildings themselves are fantastic too, very inspiring with excellent attention to detail.
Also, this, someone actually happy about the hobby and smiling, is inspiring and should be on the LAF masthead or something to remind everyone why we're here.
All round brilliant thread.
-
This thread has convinced me to start doing my hobby stuff with my daughter. She's fascinated with my miniatures and wants to learn to play. I guess its time to start teaching the next generation of gamers - and they're going to be girls!
-
All of these buildings are fantastic, Wolf Girl! And it looks like you're having a lot of fun in "the lair of the mad scientist". :D
I agree with Matakishi. It's nice to see the enjoyment from someone.
-
Love the doorway in the second pic the most. :-*
They all look great!
-

Girls make the best painters. As soon as my daughter is old enough she's being given a paint brush and some old figures to play with :D
-
Wolf Girl, that stuff is very nice it is getting better and better :)
I realy get some good inspiration.
Thanks Grimm
-
This is such a great thread :) Thanks for sharing this, you two. Great work. I have that demon statue in the background in my room on my stereo!!!
Digitarii: That's awesome.
This forum rocks!
-
should be on the LAF masthead or something to remind everyone why we're here.
Nailing someone to the mast because they're having fun seems a bit extreme me heartie ;)

I was wondering the same thing. Where can I get a Gort miniature?
Also...The foamcore you are using. Is this the stuff that's about 1/4" thick with foam sandwiched between plastic-like layers? I'd like to try your techniques.
-
Also...The foamcore you are using. Is this the stuff that's about 1/4" thick with foam sandwiched between plastic-like layers? - That's the stuff, Doomsdave.
We are near neighbors. I'm living outside of Augusta... about 2.5 hours east on I20. You coming to Siege of Augusta?

Sorry for the momentarily hijacking you thread, Wolf Girl. Please forgive.

I thought these were built with ordinary foam-core made with paper-like layers?
The plastic layered material, while excellent, is harder to cut, no?

We are pretty close to each other. I won't be able to make the Siege as I have work commitments. Didn't Augusta used to have the Warfair as well?
-
Doomsdave, that Gort is a M 11 robot out of the new Hero Clix set. I think he has 20 of them now. When I ask what he’s going to do with so many he just laughs like a crazy person. lol ;D
Peabody has it right. The foamcore has thin sheets of paper cardboard on the outside. It isn’t plastic.
former user, this is how the buildings get their last layer effect. I took these pictures while dad was finishing the last two buildings tonight.
The before picture is the building after the staining is done. (http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/100_0730.jpg)
Next, Dad puts on a layer of whitewash that has been thinned out a little with water. Just stroke it on and don’t leave bare spots. This takes him like 10 seconds. (http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/100_0733.jpg)
This is after dad brushed on the white paint. You can see the white paint pulling apart. (http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/100_0735.jpg)
This is about 15 and 30 seconds after the last picture. You can see the paint keeps pulling away even more. (http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/100_0736.jpg)
Now this is about where the separation stops. You can see all the bare and white areas in the picture. Dad did dab a little paint on in a couple places but mostly he just left it alone and let the paint do its work. (http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/100_0741.jpg)
Dad says there is a rule about not using water paints over an oil because this is the weird thing it does. But it works for this. :D
Wolf out.
-
thank You very much for the detailed tutorial mlady
I would presume the brownish "stain" helps separating the colour?
what is it?
-
Absolutely wonderful thread, Wolf, and an amazing show of skill and devotion.
:o :-*
-
I am also very impressed with this novel technique.
-
The stain is MinWax Wood Finish. I'm off to school. See ya soon.
WG out.
-
Brilliant buildings, brilliant thread.
I love that technique for finishing the adobe. Very clever indeed.
-
Wolf Girl, this is a brilliant thread, showing amazing family interaction, gorgeos buildings, ingenious building techniques and a unique painting tip.
You have inspired me (and I'm sure a lot of other people) to make some buildings for our next games.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Keep the good work, and ENJOY THE HOBBY!
Best wishes.
-
It's curtains for you!...
This is the same building Wolf Girl showed a few days ago. Now its been weathered just a little more, and I've added the windows and doors.
Just when Wolf Girl thought she was finished making curtains for me, I got the crazy idea to make a curtained entrance on the second floor...

I'll still add a few random pots and barrels, but this one is going in the 'done' stack!
Thanks,
Dave-
-
Great final touches really brings the building to life!
-
this one is going in the 'done' stack!
I think I would put it in the "Well Done" stack.
;)
-
I really like this last building.
Congratulation to you for the buildings… and to your daughter for her patience ;)
-
These buildings just keep getting better and better!!!
-
Awesome thread this, Great Job WG and dad, very inspirational.
-
Thanks for all the posts you guys! Sorry I haven't posted in awhile. Here you go!
These are the buildings officially finished with the barrels (that I painted) and the pots that dad made from necklace beads at Hobby Lobby. I’ll post the other four buildings when dad is done gluing. Enjoy!! :D

the idea with the beads is very good!
don't want to sound critical, just a suggestion:
how about going a bit to town with the gate?
-
I love those buildings! The textures are fantastic.
-
Thanks for all the WIP photos and sharing your tips and tricks!
Brilliant stuff :)
-
Wolf Girl, you and your dad should make an idiot proof (read that as "warrenss2" proof) step-by-step tutorial PDF for those of us fairly new to terrain making (namely... ME).
-
former user -- I like that idea. I'd always intended to make a removable piece that would slide in to represent a gate. Unfortunately, newer projects keep jumping ahead of it so I suspect it will probably be without a gate for awhile.
warrenss2 -- I think that is an EXCELLENT idea for Wolf Girl. I'll see what I can do. :D
THANKS for all the suggestions and comments from everyone. It definately helps!
Dave- (aka the "dad")

A step by step would be lovely, if you have the time. You pair are doing us all a favor with this kind work!
:-*
-
but isn't this a gate in the first picture?
-
Oh yes, I see what you are saying now.
You see, originally , I had intended this to be nothing more than a simple covered alley or street like in the background of this picture --
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/CairoGate.jpg)
Then I decided to give it a little more of a fortification-like appearance, so it might pass as a town gate as well. So it does look rather plain in this role.
Thanks for the idea and the picture, former user. If I end up keeping this set, I may eventually go back and add more details. :D
THANKS!
-
just a simple stonework arch and maybe an inner wall with gate opening would perfectly suffice
and if You want to add some colour, in the orient the arch stones could be alternating red and white/yellowish/grey (whichever fits better)
-
The tutorial idea is great!
But please, share with us both parts:
One dealing with the buildings and construction tips (with templates and measures if possible), and other explaining in detail to us mere mortals that AMAZING painting technique (because we LAF forumites aren't fools, but please, explain it as if we were ;D ).
Oh! and some explanation of the paper curtains can be very helpful too!
You are sooooo talented.
Tnx.

Thanks for the posts. We’ll try to make a more “fool proof”, step-by-step on how to make the buildings, doors, windows, ect. Dad made this really sweet roof I thought I should show you guys. It is made out of bristles from a broom, eighth inch of bass wood for the frame and support, and nutmeg colored spray paint. WARNING: the roof is prone to leaking. lol

Bristles from a broom! I love it. The awning looks so good.
I'm always looking for new materials that fit in scale. I've been wondering about something other than 'fake fur' plastered down with a white glue emulsion to do roofs for some bungalows I'm working on. Thanks for the tip.
-
I was wondering if some sort of roofing or tarp was going to go on that building!!! Excellent!!!!
-
Indeed, the both of you. Amazing, amazing work. I too would love to have a step-by-step PDF tutorial on your techniques. I've been following this thread for a while and, seriously, great work.
-
Come on, Wolf Girl. Hope you get that tutorial cranked out before the pressures of school hit too hard.

Nice bristles roof.
As always, you never fail to AMAZE me.
Thanks for sharing.
(And we all are waiting for the tutorial :P)
Best wishes.

Wow...this is a fabulous topic.
Excellent work.
This has inspired me to get my "The Mummy" themed game off the ground.
-
On a side note...who makes the trucks and what size are they?
-
All those vehicles are from Blue Moon Manufacturing, out of their Highways and Byways line. I'd say they are somewhere in the 1:56 to 1:64 range, but I'm not sure what they call it.
Here is a picture of the truck surrounded by some Artizan minis, for a better sense of scale --

someone is really into Indiana Jones here....
when do we get to see the egyptian excavation?
-
Egypt is definitely on the to-do list. And I've been busy making and stockpiling Hirst bricks for when the time comes. However, I'll probably go back and work on some more jungle island terrain first. I'd really like to figure out a way to make a cool swamp. So what about a lost jungle temple excavation? :D
THANKS!

shallow water excavations are tricky and IMHO unattractive scenery-wise
but You could include a sunken Egyptian temple in the Nile delta swamp ;)

Over on the Call of Cthulhu forum, another board member posted about making terrain pieces from CD's, most of what he's built are swamp pieces.
Here's the link: a few odds and ends (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=16912.0)
Seems simple enough to build, and you can color them to match the table top you're using. I would say 1 or 2 per square foot of table top would be sufficiently swampy enough.

Beautiful work, shows a lot of effort and skill!

er... nudge, nudge... Tutorial?

:D people are busy building and painting ;)
the tutorial for the house painting was some pages above

:D people are busy building and painting ;)
Yes indeed!
Several months ago, when we started this project together, this was the first building we made. Along the way and largely due to the support and advice of fellow LAF contributors we learned a lot. So I felt like it was time to finally go back and apply some of those lessons and ideas to this first building –
I added four exposed logs along the top and several flavor-bits along the front of the building. This is really just done to break up the uniformity of the lines and lend a sense of real world randomness without being too detailed or specific –
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/100_1058.jpg)
The following picture gives a decent view of the “curtained entrances”. Additionally you may be able to see there is a line-of-sight through the building, which has made for some fun shoot-outs –
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/100_1059.jpg)
Here is a view of the rear entrance. Again, I added some flavor-bits just to give it a little more character. There is enough space to allow a character to duck inside for some cover. Note the difference in color between the front and rear of the building. This is because the back was not “whitewash” –
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/100_1064.jpg)
THANKS to everyone that provided support and suggestions. It definitely helps!

What colours did you use for the back door?
-
The father and daughter team never cease to amaze!!!!
-
School has gotten in the way of doing a new tutorial but we still plan to do one.
We use a wood stain on the balsa wood to get the color. He doesn't use any actual paint on the wood except for a little dry brushing.
Dad keeps threatening to make more buildings in this series. He thinks need something big with a tall tower.
Next we're going to make some ruins with the giant stock pile of bricks that I've been making.

That is brilliant work as usual! And so well thought through! That is really the best way to give your pieces such character.
I'd be also interested in your wood colour recipe and also your source for the tiled roof.

Hello fellow pulpists! I’m glad to be back.
Here is a picture of me in the lair of the Great Old One getting ready to cut more wood beams for the houses.
Here you can see the wood walkways dad made to give the gaming area a more 3-d feel. For the nails on the walkway dad used dabs of puff paint. As you can see we added wood beams on the front of all the buildings now. I made these today out of 1/2 inch pieces of 1/8 inch diameter sticks. If you look closely you can see the carpet dad added on one of the houses. He added other carpets on other houses I just didn’t take pictures of those yet.

Major Payne- You really shouldn’t encourage my dad to wear hats. The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.
Remington- We used a dark walnut minwax stain for the wood color. I dipped each piece separately in the stain then let it dry for about 10 minutes and then wiped away the excess stain. We made the tiled roof ourselves from a mold supplied by our good friends over at Hirst Molds.
Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement.

Hey Wolf Girl,
thank you for the reply. Loving the walkways... By the way, I wouldn't go to mad with the round wooden beams. It makes the whole project appear too... Pueblo. As far as I remember from my World Architecture course, buildings in Yemen and North Africa the visible wooden beams are not that regularly employed.
-
The walk-ways definitely add a great dimension to games & the angle bits at each end are very clever.
Heck, you can use a pair of walk-ways to space your buildings when setting up your tables. Just make an alley sized pair (or more!) for the narrow places.
Thanks for keeping us inspired and elevated. 8) 8) 8)

The art behind Wolf Girl are some original panels by Scott Godlewski. His work with Mysterious Adventures Magazine, and his own Green Ghost are well worth checking out if you are a fan of pulp.

I don't think it matters too much. What we use is simply called "White Glue" and I'm sure it was just the cheapest he could find. lol lol

Actually, you have to make sure that the glue does not contain anything that will dissolve the foam, if you use foam board. Apart from ruining the model, it might cause toxic fumes.
But any water-based glue should be safe.

Correct, a good PVA like a white hobby or school glue, or even a yellow carpenter's glue is what I suggest. And for the record, I don't always buy the cheapest. There was that one time... ;)

This is a great thread that shows just what a great family hobby we are involved with. My daughters and I always spend 2hrs every Saturday night making bits and pieces. My 9yr old is obessed with tanks at the moment and has made over 40 in the last few weeks. The 6yr old loves boats and is madly constructing fleets of dorys, sampans, junks and Egyptian reed boats. We will be adding terrain to the list soon. Both of my girls also love to help in the store selling figures and hosting participation games with the local kids whilst their dads shop or have a game themselves. Please forgive the corny line but:
The children ARE our future....without them there is no future gamers and gaming is NOT the exclusive realm of men......GO THE GIRLS!!! :) :) :)

Stop that peter, we all know girls have better hand eye coordination, finger hands in general and are smarter. Do you want to be beat on the workbench and the battlefield? lol Maybe there are so few girls in the hobby because we don't offer a big enough challenge? ;D

Hi!
Today I started on another scaffolding. I’m going to use dad’s old one as a template. Since I can measure it and see how it all goes together I think it will be pretty easy to do. These are fun pieces to play with. It’s always cool to get guys up running around on them. Here’s a picture of the one dad made a few months ago.
First I went about measuring and marking for all the cuts I needed to make. I’m using bass wood because it’s a little sturdier then balsa and it needs to be able to stand up to some serious gaming.
I used a mini miter box and a small hobby saw to cut the wood. This helps to make sure that the cuts are all nice and straight. I’ve used this a couple times before, it’s pretty easy and safe to use.
Here is a list of all the pieces you need to make this scaffolding if you wanted to try it yourself:
12 planks x 4.5” long
8 planks x 2.5” long
10 poles x 3” long
4 poles x 4.5” long
4 poles x 5.25” long
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/100_1398.jpg)
Next I put stain on all the wood pieces. Just a quick dip and then wipe off the excess. This is as far as I got today. I’m going to let it dry over night and hopefully get it put together tomorrow.
Thanks for checking it out!

That's amazing! Why don't you make a blog?????
-
Incredibly well organized!
Also, I like that little mitre box. Been meaning to get one for years, but there's something (usually someting pewter) more demanding of my gaming dollar...
-
woo-hoo!
amazed by your working table..
i could never be so tidy and metodical, i'm MUCH MORE messy...
-
Some great work there, you're doing brilliantly! Thanks for the detailed photos, and good to see you guys are taking a few safety precautions with that wood stainer!
-
Hey all! It’s me again! Hope you enjoy the post and thanks for the comments! :D
I assembled the scaffolding today. I wasn’t quite as easy as I thought it would be but luckily dad was nearby to help out when I needed it. :D
Here I am almost finished with the second ladder. I used the grooves at the bottom of the miter box to line up the long pieces. That held them in place while I glued the rungs of the ladder.
I decided to make the floors next. This seemed easy at the time, but I’m not sure if it was the best idea. Dad said he made the floors last when he made his, so you could do it either way.
Here are the finished floors. Making these was much easier than making the rest of the building. There is supposed to be a certain amount of unevenness to the floor boards to represent how people might just throw them into place.
I then attached the poles to the floor pieces. This was a real pain getting everything to line up right. I used a couple rubber bands to try to get everything to stay in place.
This is the finished piece except for the base which will be done at a later time. Some of the angles aren’t exactly right but dad says that just gives it more character. Overall I’m happy with the way it turned out. It wasn’t easy but I got it done and maybe it will be ready to use for tomorrow nights game.
Next up I might make another building. Dad sketched out plans for a big three story one that looks pretty cool. But I’m also thinking about making some new jungle terrain.
Wolf out-

Having made a very similar scaffolding myself I can vouch for the "looks easy but NOT" part of this build.
The miter is indeed a stroke of genius.
Nice clear tutorial - great work! :)
-
very cool :)
-
I have to re-read this thread for some inspiration for my own pulp-Egyptian/Arabian style village that I can hopefully start on next month.
Some great work on display in this thread!
-
I can't understand why I've missed this thread before. I've made some similar foamcore buildings but yours knock spots off mine.
Perhaps I need a talented daughter to assist, though I think it's possibly a little late starting out for one now. :D
Keep up the good work.
-
New buildings are on the way so stay tuned. :D
-
The before picture is the building after the staining is done. (http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/100_0730.jpg)
Next, Dad puts on a layer of whitewash that has been thinned out a little with water. Just stroke it on and don’t leave bare spots. This takes him like 10 seconds. (http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/100_0733.jpg)
This is after dad brushed on the white paint. You can see the white paint pulling apart. (http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/100_0735.jpg)
This is about 15 and 30 seconds after the last picture. You can see the paint keeps pulling away even more. (http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/100_0736.jpg)
Now this is about where the separation stops. You can see all the bare and white areas in the picture. Dad did dab a little paint on in a couple places but mostly he just left it alone and let the paint do its work. (http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/sylvanbranch/100_0741.jpg)
Dad says there is a rule about not using water paints over an oil because this is the weird thing it does. But it works for this. :D
Wolf out.
Every once in awhile we have a few questions come up regarding this project, so I thought it might be appropriate to share the answers here --
The wood stain was MINWAX Wood Finish, Golden Oak 210B. Which I believe is just a stain, rather than what I'd think of as a sealer.
The whitewash was a latex indoor/outdoor paint thinned with water. Just the sort of stuff you'd use to paint a real house - not a model one. :D
We put tape on the inside of the windows/doors to prevent the texture from altering the interior surfaces -- so the doors and windows would fit flush against the wall.
The basic steps were --
1. Stipple the surfaces with wood filler for texture.
2. Paint it with wood glue to seal it.
3. Paint it with an oil-based stain.
4. Cover with a thin whitewash that will shrink back on top of the oil below due to surface tension (shown above).
HAVE FUN!

..... Very nice ....... Always liked those buildings
Foamcore is great stuff, bullit proof ....... Forgiving ..... Cutting it was never my strongpoint, glad to see you guys have it down
The trick with cutting foamcore, insofar as there is a trick, is to use a brand-new razor knife blade, and to replace the blade the minute it starts snagging in the foamcore.
The stuff is brutal on blades; I usually figure one building (or two very small ones) per blade. You can keep the blades for non-foamcore work, they're still OK for simple hacking and even cutting cardboard and such, but don't use them on foamcore after they start snagging.
-
Really outstanding! Richard

Since we were planning 10+ buildings, I decided to invest in a foamcore cutter. This is the one we got -- http://www.amazon.com/Logan-WC-6001-Foamwerks-Straight-Cutter/dp/B001JSWKO6/ref=pd_sim_t_8
I've done a lot of work on foamcore with a knife through the years, but this little gadget really helps. :D

Interesting indeed. Any review of it? can you explain us why it is better than a normal cutter?

Very nice work! :)
I cut foamcore with a box cutter knife, and keep a whetstone and mineral oil handy. When the blade starts getting blunt, I sweep it over the stone a few times. Saves on buying blades all the time.

Yup, Hirst mold blocks. I'm mostly using the weathered blocks and also adding in a few blocks from the temple set.
This is really great, I need one of these! I particularly like your evil statue, just right for the dungeon. Where did it come from?
I think it's called "Demon Idol" - from Otherworld Miniatures.

That's a lot of casting and gluing.
I have a bunch of these bricks and I've been wondering what to do with them for a while.
-
I finally ran out of powder this week, but we had enough to finish the dungeon. It takes sooooo many castings to make stuff, so I usually try to cast a few molds each week -- even if I don't know what I'm going to do with them yet. :D

Im looking forward to getting in some pulp games using Pulp Alley. I'll be sure to post up some pics when I do.

That sphinx has seen better days. Some bad guys must have used it for target practice ;)

That is a one of a kind, and as such will be highly sought after. ;) (Especially if you put it in a Pulp Alley scenario) lol

It's a store bought item. I don't remember who makes it exactly. It may be Scotia Grendel but I can't say for sure.

We made these wall sections awhile ago, but recently had a few questions about them....
Basically, they are simply two strips of foamcore glued to a metal base. I got the 'metal braces' at a home-diy store. They add weight to the bottom, make the walls sit very flat, and make them very durable. The ones I used are 3" x 1/2" -- four straight pieces and 4 'L' shaped....
Then we did a bit of knife-work and added wood filler to get the right shape. Note, the example I'm holding in the pic below is slightly smaller than the pieces I actually used for the walls...
Lastly, each section was textured/painted/finished like the buildings on this thread...

My sentiments exactly.
This thread is a fantastic resource; I hadn't thought of using the angle brackets as bases - what a great idea.

Dave,
Thanks a lot. I am planning on doing some walls with cork and was planning to glue them together like your foamcore. I hadn't thought of using braces but the weight will be very helpful. You should be seeing some in the fairly near future using the braces for bases. Home Depot here I come!

Yes, it is all Hirst Arts stuff. Mostly from the Egyptian Basic Block Mold #95 and some from Egyptian Temple Mold #94.
It takes sooooooooo many casting to make stuff. Now we're out of powder again. Good thing we ordered more a few days ago. lol

Prof, the quick answer is - "As few as possible." Basically, I try to avoid using molded blocks where they will not be visible. - but I'll get you some pics too.

One neat thing you might want to try is to have some vegetation you can lay on the temples, in case they need to be lost in a jungle somewhere.

Great work and an inspiration!

Good idea... maybe some smaller bases (washers) with vegetation, that can be used as well on ruins as on the grounds...
-
nice one those temples are looking great - is that just the hirst egyptian sets?
-
Good idea... maybe some smaller bases (washers) with vegetation, that can be used as well on ruins as on the grounds...
And perhaps have a few random blocks that are "loose", and model them with attached vegetation (brush, draping vines, etc.) that can cascade down the side of the walls/slopes and/or fill the random corner/edge...
-
Amazing terrain as usual.
One neat thing you might want to try is to have some vegetation you can lay on the temples, in case they need to be lost in a jungle somewhere.
My exact reaction also. I was thinking of vines to drape on the sides made with wire or glue soaked twine shaped to conform to the shape of the ruins. Desert ruins to jungle ruins in seconds. I hope you have some broken/fallen column pieces planned too.
You're making not getting Hirst molds very difficult.
Can't wait for the next update.
-

Ayup, just a bunch of blocks cast from Hirst molds. I think we used molds #94, #95, and #203.
Thanks for all the great suggestions from everyone. I'm sure we'll get around to trying some of those ideas.

Ayup, we definitely thin the wood filler with a bit of water. We try to get it to the point that it can easily be dabbed on but still holds it shape when applied.
We apply the wood filler with a big old brush, and just dab it on.

In preparation for our VICE ALLEY expansion, I'm thinking our next big terrain project will be a modern city with tall brick buildings, paved streets, and dark dangerous alleys. I've been planning the layout for about a year, but I still don't know how we're going to make the buildings. O-Scale Plastics, MDF, Paper Buildings, or just do it all from scratch?
What have other folks used?
What has worked?
What didn't work?
What are the relative costs?
Your ideas, suggestions, and pictures are welcome!

I have never contemplated building inner city highrise terrain because of the complete gaming impracticalities. So I am interested to see how you will pull this one off from that perspective.
-
For gangland gaming, I really like the Ziterdes hardfoam buildings. I have several at home waiting for some paint. Did the first one a while ago:
I'm a sucker for hardfoam. It's fantastic for gaming and has that depth that most HDF stuff lacks. And it's not too expensive too.
-
Malebolgia, nice painting. Are those available in the States?
Dave, I have been wrestling with these issues myself.
Here are some of my prior attempts at building early 20th century style buildings for pulp/zombie gaming.
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=50306.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=50306.0)
I am leaning towards paper, either stand alone or on foam core right now.
You've seen my most recent attempts at those.
I have an O scale plasticville bank to build up that is excellent, though most of that range is 50's suburban. The O scale plasticville factory is on my buy list but cash is always a factor, as is storage.
Best of luck. I can't wait to see what you and Mila do.

Dave,
I have just come into a bunch of Old Glory Miniatures Gangland buildings. So I will be using about 15 of them. One other thing would be to use some Design Preservation Models O scale kits, they are a bit pricey and they are getting hard to find.
Now there are a bunch of MDF laser cut stuff, but some of that is pricey as well. Maybe you need to invest in your own laser cutter. I have actually been thinking of just that!

For those who are content with using paper/foamboard, The virtual Arm Chair General has a nice range of Chicago 20's buildings, Mean Streets, available as pdf - most in both the American format and A4 (as I bought some and requested the A4 format some years ago).
For those who can afford it, the Old Glory option is nice, and then there are the laser-cut mdf-stuff, and the foam in between.
I really like the Ziterdes-stuff, but postage is a bit prohibiting with this sort of size, and I don't have an FLGS carrying it....

I have been using a mix of plastic, mdf and paper buildings. They all work. In preparation for our VICE ALLEY expansion, I'm thinking our next big terrain project will be a modern city with tall brick buildings, paved streets, and dark dangerous alleys.
I'm sure it will be a feast for the eyes. I have to say however, when I think of the busy, "occupied" parts of a city, I always think specifically of mob style games and super hero games. When I think of Pulp, I'm more inclined towards the warehouse district, the docks, lumber yards, chemical plants. If I were ever to construct a 3x3 urban play area for Pulp, I would lean towards just a few buildings, maybe three. These would be warehouse or storage facility type constructions. Maybe a couple of small shed-like constructions (foreman's hut, security guard station). I would also have room for chain-link fences, piles of crates, dumpsters, delivery trucks, a few street lights, and of course, a single phone booth. ;D
In short, it might be urban, but I would like it to be desolate as well. The perfect places for hooded cultists and crooked mobsters to conduct their evil plans.
Just my 2 cents
P.S. Have a great Pulp Alley Birthday!
-
Regarding an urban setting, reading pulp 'noire' stuff from the 1920s onwards, there are many stories set around large city town houses or mansion houses, estates, etc. so a large house in its own grounds with some outhouses and maybe a gardener's cottage, etc. would be good.

I completely missed the 'modern' part of the question.... but again, there's as well paper solutions to be had (I like Worldworks Games), as mdf, and resin. I think Ziterdes makes some foam for modern settings, too, but I haven't checked lately.

Re, Vice Alley buildings,
If going for a 'Chicago' look, you don't necessarily need tall buildings. It does have its famous highrise district of course, by the lake, but a lot of the historical action took place out in the suburban districts, which are characterized by 1-3 story buildings.
Al Capone based himself in the township of Cicero, several miles from downtown which probably looked like a distant backdrop at the time. His HQ at the Hawthorne Hotel was the site of one particularly infamous drive-by machinegun assault.
The typical building would be characterized by a front façade with some architectural gingerbread in a quasi-classic style, and plain brickwork on the alleyways or rear.
You can get strips of craft wood at Michaels that look a lot like the 'gingerbread'. You can also get brick mat (gluing a few bricks on here and there gives a brick look without having to model all-brick). Have given it some thought, but it's on my long term to-do list.

This is what I'm currently leaning towards. Maybe mostly 2-3 story buildings, with a few 4 story buildings mixed in.
I'm looking at needing 12-14 buildings, base on my drawings. To get the sizes and shapes we'll need, we may just have to build them from scratch.
THANKS for all the ideas and suggestions.

Here are a few of the buildings I am working on at the moment, mostly WIPs.
Papercraft buildings from scalescenes (left) and Clever models.

Beautiful buildings Anpu :-*. Love the 2.5-D elements that make the buildings pop visually.
IMHO illustration board or foamboard backed papercraft buildings would be the way to go. Stylish but rugged and there are lots of free options available too on the Interweb. Here is a great source for free Chicago style buildings: http://www.illinoishistory.gov/ps/construct_mainstreet.htm (Might need to be resized)
I have several buildings with lift off floors/roofs but now I'm tending towards solid shell buildings with separate floor plans played on a side area when the action goes inside and/or buildings with open backs.
Also to remember that with tall buildings, alleys will have to be wider to be able to reach in easily.
Looking forward to see what you come up with.
-
Sweet! Thanks for that link, Braz. I think we'll try doing some of those. Anpu's paper buildings may have sealed it for us.
Looks like Mila and I will try our hand at putting together some paper buildings and see how it goes. ;)
THANKS for everyone's ideas, suggestions, and pics!

We're getting some tombstones ready for the Halloween Party this Friday. It'll be a lot of fun. We'll try to get the battle report up afterwards. :D

Looks intriguing.......
-
Just found a box with a mausoleum (Fenris) and some other bits and bobs for a graveyard when I was looking for a certain couple of Pulp Figures to paint up for Pulp Alley and Strange Aeons (funny how those two games can easily use the same minis)... Maybe I should get some stuff done; I also recently received the American Church from Renedra (plastic kit).
-
I love that you are doing pumpkins. I look forward to seeing how you will put them to use.

I'm sure Mila will post a battle report for her Pulp Alley scenario with more detailed pics, but here's a sneak peek of the new pumpkins, grave markers, and tree Mila made for this game...

THANKS

Very nice wall. Do you have a closer shot of the door? It looks really good, but I'm interested in the symbols on there. You did all your blocks with Hirst molds or are some foam?

It's all Hirst Arts blocks. Although they are glued to a styrofoam backing, so there's only a single layers of them.

He's got terrifyingly eldricht fingerprints, then. :D
That looks great - do you colour the HA blocks before assembly, coloured plaster or something? I like the subtle variety in the blocks.

Lon -- I traced over a sheet of aluminum foil with a pen, that I placed on a styrofoam backing. I crumpled the foil a bit and flattened it back out to give it a little extra character, before doing the sigils.
I think those are Dave's fingerprints... ;D
Peabody -- I've been discovered! lol lol lol
That looks great - do you colour the HA blocks before assembly, coloured plaster or something? I like the subtle variety in the blocks.
BB -- Yup, the water-putty makes tan blocks. Then we dip each one in stain prior to assembly. Lots of factors affect the color, but mainly it's how long we hold it in the stain. Most of the blocks are only in the dip for 1-2 seconds, but the darker blocks were dunked for about 5 seconds. We mainly use minwax golden oak wood stain for this kind of stuff.
We don't do any brushwork until the very last, for a quick drybrushing.

Durhams Water Putty? That's primo stuff. Very durable and takes colour differently than most plasters 'cause it has some adhesive in the mix.

Ayup, we can find Durham's Water Putty easily locally, so we have been using it the most. It works great for the blocks but doesn't quite have the strength to mold some of the more delicate parts.
We recently ordered some Merlin's Magic and it is considerably stronger - for when we really need it.

I wonder what just dipping as you describe would look like on just plaster white bricks?
I ask, because I have ordered some casts from Hirst molds from a vendor and the casts will be white.
Do you wipe any stain off or just dunk and dry?

I'm guessing it should work the same with white blocks.
The blocks tend to be failry pourous, so there isn't usually anything to wipe away. Anything on the surface is quickly absorbed.
You can control the saturation of color by leaving the block dunked a couple extra seconds. I try to do this with about one-fourth of our blocks just to get some variety of color.

-
Ayup, thats the stuff. Just a few more points ---
It can take awhile for the blocks to dry after dipping. I usually give it about 24 hours.
I place the blocks in a single layer after they are dipped, bottom-side down, with a little space between each one.
After dipping be sure to place the blocks on something that won't bleed through, like some aluminum foil or such.
And please mind the vapors. I usually move the blocks outside if its not too cold or rainy.
Please let us know how everything goes.

In preparation for our Vice Alley campaign, we've been looking at different ways of getting some city buildings on the table -- paper buildings, mdf, resin cast, and so on.
This morning I decided to try my hand at just building a storefront from sculpey and spare bits of balsa/bass wood I had. This was a quick little test so I just made it up as I went along, rather than having much of a plan.
First I shaped and baked the sculpey. And then started adding some wood... (front and back)

Overall, I'm quite happy with this quick test project. I made a lot of mistakes and learned quite a bit as I went through the process but that can be part of the fun.
Eventually, we'll add some more details, but I think this is something that may work quite nicely for us -- and it could be a fun project for Mila and me to do together.
Comments and suggestions wlecome!

Looks good.
I strongly reccomend MATAKISHI'S TEA HOUSE as a good source of inspiration. He uses cork, but if that's not your choice material, there is still a lot to learn about measurements, proportions and design.
Waiting to see where all this goes, moreaver if there's a campaign asociated.
I'm currently building my own "folding" cardboard city, and may be able to post some pics in the near future.
I already have about a dozen buildings, plus sidewalks and urban furniture, waiting to be painted.
Best wishes.

We live far from civilized lands, so we had to order the acrylic rods off the interweb. ;)

The first plane I did like this, I inserted a short brass tube in the plane as well, so it was always held straight.

I made those by squeezing out very small dabs of "Puffy" Paint. It worked nicely, but the trick was simply getting a consistent amount each time. I found the stuff at a local Hobby Lobby store, but here's a link as well ---

I don't know what You are doing, but if You chose to use "pulp-style" oversized bricks as a design issue, You could consider 1/35 plastic kits and also brick sets that are commercially available

We got some more done on our first building for our Vice Alley campaign. There's still lots and lots to get done, but here's some WIP pics.
There will be a loading dock along this side of the building...
I didn't really plan on putting windows back here, but it just worked out that way based on the pieces I had in front of me at the time...
This building is one of the simpler designs I have planned for Vice Alley, so I'm using it to learn the process a little bit. Honestly, I have no clue what I'm doing but I've never let that stop me before....

I've made a lot of mistakes so far but I'm learning as I go along and I think the other buildings/blocks will be better.
I'm hoping we can get all the bricks glued on this one over the weekend.
THANKS

Looking promising 8)
If you haven't already thought of it how about laying all the pieces front side down for each elevation whilst gluing them so you get an even frontage (if that makes sense ??? ).
You will need to put down a layer of greaseproof paper stop stop the elevation gluing to your work surface and also be careful appying the glue so it doesn't get in the front brick seams :)
cheers

Honestly, I have no clue what I doing but I've never let that stop me before....
....as is the case with all great adventurers!
This building is looking really good already. I have some moulds from an old building system called Linka, are you using something similar?

It certainly is!

That truck is brilliant too.
A great finish on it.

It may well say somewhere on the thread already, but where is the truck from?

Excellent tips for this kind of stuff. Thanks!

Yup, we're using molds by Diorama Debris --- http://www.dioramadebris.co.uk/
They are much smaller than the Hirst Molds we've used in the past, but also much less expensive.
FYI --- My first few attempts at using these molds were very disappointing, but this was due to my own ignorance. After going back and reading the tips and guides section on the Diorama Debris website, the castings are now nearly perfect.
We're casting the bricks with Merlin's Magic dental stone.

What scale are the bricks you are using 1/35?
I have two old boxes of Linka stuff but the bricks are too small for 28 mm more for 20 mm.
What are you going to do for windows?

Yup, those are 1/35 scale bricks. I'm willing to drift a wee bit out of scale to save a few of my SAN points.
I'll use some bass/balsa to put a simple window frame in and use some stiff plastic for the window glass. I'll glaze/smoke the plastic just enough so you won't be able to see through too much.

After a brief hiatus and getting fitted for a new defibrillator vest, I'm back to work writing and playtesting new material for our next Pulp Alley book (Vice Alley) and working on our new city terrain.
Here are a couple WIP pics of a piece I'm currently working on. I'm thinking this could pass for something like a factory, workshop, warehouse, distillery, and so on...

Holy crap, I missed this part. I hope things are going smoothly with the hardware!

We're using these two molds --
Large Wall -- http://www.dioramadebris.co.uk/135-scale-brick-wall-section-stretcher-bond-mould-1350067-64-p.asp
Small Sections -- http://www.dioramadebris.co.uk/135-scale-brick-pier-sections-stretcher-bond-mould-1350068-65-p.asp

We debated using paper buildings or that MDF stuff. There are some nice products out there, but I decided to try these molds and see what we can come up with. ;D ;D

Dave, have you thought about applying a thin MDF backing to your walls, to keep the bricked surfaces flush?
-
Dave, have you thought about applying a thin MDF backing to your walls, to keep the bricked surfaces flush?
Nah, the trick isn't to put something on the back because the pieces have varying thickness -- because each one is made by hand (fat, old, and clumsy hands). ;)
So making them all even from behind would make it worse. Instead, you got to put it all together with the fronts laying face down on a very flat surface. But of course, I find ways to muck that up as well. ;D ;D
-
Well, another option would be to glue the parts of each wall together while they're face down on a flat surface. ;)

Roof added, dock stained, and a wee bit more progress to show...

Yup, I just dip it in minwax stain and wipe it off. Once it's dry I'll sand it gently just to add a bit of character and lighten the edges. I didn't use any paint on the dock or the big doors.
-
Almost there! That's sure looking good so far though!

An easy answer might be some of the same stuff you use to make the clear bases, with some wood crosspieces glued on?

I added the first coat of color and worked on the doors a bit. There's still lots more to do, but it's coming along ---
This is coming along really nicely. :-*
I have always been a big fan of your doors. How exactly do you achieve that whole finish? Please share.
-
Doors and woodwork look great, coming along very nicely, indeed.
-
When it comes to the windows,...don't forget to add the odd broken one. Maybe add a bullet hole here and there. Comes with the industrial neighborhood and the adolescents round here are a terror. ;)
-
An easy answer might be some of the same stuff you use to make the clear bases, with some wood crosspieces glued on?
Ayup, that's definitely one of the options I'm thinking about. I've done windows like that before, but I might try something different this time.
I have always been a big fan of your doors. How exactly do you achieve that whole finish? Please share.
I use wood stains instead of paint. First the pieces are dipped in a bath of minwax's Golden Oak and wiped off. This is a really light stain and gives the wood a nice golden color.
After that's fairly dry, I'll use a darker stain to add a bit more character. Usually a few dabs along the bottom of the door and a few other random spots. The nice thing is how this is absorbed and looks quite natural.
Lastly, I'll sand it gently - aiming mainly to lighten the edges.
I hope that helps.

I love that building. How did you do the windows?
A few folks have asked about the windows...
I was really dreading the idea and making all those windows. My fat fingers don't like doing all that small fiddly work any longer. After a couple failed ideas, I was thrilled when I finally came up with a way to CHEAT! :o
I printed the black frames on a sheet of clear plastic, cut them out with scissors, and glued them in place. Fast, simple, and I'm very happy with how it looks. I brushed some gloss varnish on the inside to give the windows more "character". :D
Very, very nice now it's finished. (psst, that back wall still needs a large painted sign across the bricks...) ;)
Ayup, that's one of the things I'd like to go back and add. Maybe eventually, but for now I'm moving on... ;)

My fault for not being clear. The basing material you used to cover the wood filler on your aeroplane flight stands.

That stuff is really cool, it's called Deck Restore - Liquid Armor Resurfacer.
It's is like a high-quality outdoor latex paint with a very fine sand mixed in. It is the sort of thing someone would use to protect an outdoor wooden deck/porch from the elements.
It is intended to be walked on, so it's pretty tough stuff. But it is also easy to brush on and cleans up with water.

I like the magnetic sign idea, might have to try it out on my existing urban buildings, which I've already been thinking of pulling out and doing some additional detail work on.

I'd love to see more of those cardboard mockups Dave had together earlier finally built. Those were really solidly gameable designs.

When you line up your buildings, sometimes they were not perfectly aligned across the fronts. A shop or restaurant could be set back by a foot to 3 feet to make room for outside displays or tables, or "just because". This gives a visual break up to an other wise straight line, adds places for ambushing agents or cover when under fire. Awnings can be stuck on with "blue tack" to change the appearance of any shop and their easy to throw together.
Trash cans, Streetlight poles, telephone poles, trees, letter boxes, fire hydrants etc add some more cover and help bring the street to life.
Just thought to throw this out there for you while your in the early stages of construction ;)

If the item I like is hard to find or out of production, I tend to make a mold and cast it from resin or lead.

Dave,
That looks great.
How many sets did it take to make?
I have to wait for Christmas the sets that I got.
Did you paint it redbrown before drybrushing?
I look forward to seeing it in action.
ps what are you going to do with the walkers?
-
How many sets did it take to make?
I don't really know. I got three different buildings and lumped all the pieces together. I'd guess this building used a little over half of the pieces.
Did you paint it redbrown before drybrushing?
I lightly dusted it with brown and gray spray paint before dry-brushing. It was a super-fast paintjob -- maybe 5 minutes from start to finish.
What are you going to do with the walkers?
I'm really wanting to do some more armor vs armor games using the Pulp Alley vehicle rules.

That is a great piece of gaming terrain. I can see it being used in many different settings.

Here is my latest terrain project. Still a WIP but I think it is looking good so far.

Whoa, these are all really nice. You must be getting close to having a full city to cover a 3' x 3' board.
I see some figures in the midst of being painted on the left there, but what are those things to the left of the figures that sort of look like bar stools from a disco? Are they painting stands?
-
Dunno how I have missed this great thread ???
Awesome builds, the city will look grand for sure 8)
What did you use for the surface material on the flower shop?

Yes, a full set up can't be far off? It would be great to see a shot of the city.
I think the items you can see are the bar stools from Sally Forth.

Thats a great looking building :-* :-* :-*
Where is it from?
Well, I think we got it from a guy who got it from a guy, who got it from another guy, but I believe it was made by Old Glory. (?)
What did you use for the surface material on the flower shop?
Sorry, I'm not exactly sure what you mean. It is a resin building, if that helps. :)

Yes, I think we'll have our Vice Alley set finished in a week or so. Then it's off to Egypt!....
You got it right, those are bar stools. I also have a bar I need to put together. lol

Wow, those two are excellent additions to your city. This is going to be one heck of a city! :-*

I like the signage, it sets it off nicely.

Yes, you got it in one. Another of Dad's secrets has been uncovered. Except that he uses an aluminum or brass tube. Our terrain gets tons of use, so it needs to be sturdy enough to survive getting bumped alot. lol lol

I am very happy with how the buildings are turning out, but let me share a word of caution. I'm sure there are tons of issues with casting something this big in resin and it shows. Be prepared for warped walls, lots of mis-cast/broken windows, lots and lots of bubble holes, warped roofs, and so on.
We got the set second-hand so I can't say that this is indicative of what the company normally sells. Maybe this was a bad batch that someone rescued from the bin. We have very little money to spend on this sort of thing, so I'm glad we got the whole set very very cheap and with a bit of work they more than suit our purposes.

That set up is very nice indeed :-*
You guys have made a fantastic job of it, well done.

Any good sources for old posters? The sort of thing that would be plastered on the sides of buildings? ;)

Here's a few (note that all the linked galleries have multiple pages):

Not all the posters will be useful, but there are plenty of generic ones in each of those links. There are also US ones and European ones. Should be lots to pick and choose from among those links.

Looking very nice! The moulded additions really complete the building.
How are you planning to do the windows? I've got a load to build (I'm thinking perhaps as an Asylum frontage...) but I'm stuck on how to do all the glazing.

Coming together great 8)
What's the roof texture?

Awesome work. I agree with Andrew that those mouldings really improve the building a lot.

That's a lovely building! I'm intrigued how you did the roof.

Thanks for all the comments. :D

I have a fairly simple solution for the windows. I post some pics of the process when I get a few more added.
What's the roof texture?
Oh no, now I have to confess that I use duct tape. Yes, it is nothing more than strips of duct tape stuck to a sheet of corrugated cardboard. In fact, it's black duct tape so I don't even paint it -- except to add a wee bit of character. The roof took me about 5 minutes to make.
I picked out this duct tape specifically for this purpose and tried to find a type that had a nice texture.

Look for Gaffer's Tape, from any theatrical supply house.
Not as cheap as duck tape, but dead flat & unreflective.
Gaffer's Tape has a surface texture very much like electrician's friction tape, but wide.
I can imagine it would do a splendid job of portraying a tar n'gravel roof.
Which I have several to construct from DUST bits n'bric-a-brac...
Thank you for the wonderful tip sez he heading for his theatre toolbag...

i must now confess that i have used plain old masking tape when making some pirate ships; has a texture for dry brushing, stagger in layers for overlapping hull sides, and cheap. i thought i was the only one, and was either a genuis or a lazy git (possibly a bit of both).
-
I've used thin strips of electrical tape (sometimes in multiple layers) to make belts, shoulder straps and the like for figure conversions.

That's another good idea that I'll have to try. :D
-
That's another good idea that I'll have to try. :D
Extra tip: If they start to come loose or don't stick well (electrical tape doesn't have a really strong adhesion when reduced to very small surface areas), a little drop of model glue (the instant stuff, CYA) can sometimes fix it in place.

I recently had a chance to play with a 3d printer for a little while so I decided to put together a quick rooftop water tank for our Pulp Alley terrain. Still need to finish painting it, but I'm fairly happy with how its turning out ---

Very cool! What sort of printer did you use? The resolution looks very good.
I'll have to check. The resolution is fairly rough in my opinion, but I think it actually works in the favor of a project like this.
I think it is some sort of ABS plastic. Nice and sturdy and still somewhat flexible. Takes paint and glue really well.

We're using these two molds --

Hi Dave,
I know this is an older post on an older project, but is there any way you could give a mini-review of the diorama debris molds (and any other molds you might be using) and perhaps a brief "how I did it" on the casting and construction of the building? Was it easy to get everything lined up, did you have to use a backing material on the interior of the walls, etc?
I'm looking (rather cautiously) at doing some brickwork building projects of my own, and you're the only person I've seen online who's done anything similar to what I'm thinking with these molds. Any advice you could give me would be great.
-
OOoooh those buildings ! :o
I think this says it all! :-*

I've been lucky enough to get access to a decent 3d printer for a limited time, so I've been designing and printing some pieces for our Pulp Alley terrain. First I made a couple rooftop water tanks, and then I made this rooftop sign. It measures about 8.5" x 4" and was printed as a single piece ---

Drill out a series of holes on the center-line of each letter and wire v.small LEDs. You can even get a controller if you want a blink or chase effect...
Simpler yet, pre-plan the holes and channels on the back for wiring when you schedule the next build on the 3D printer.
No rush - I'll wait :D

Love your work, Dave.
Now, the building on which your very cool sign rests is the Dust Tactics Warzone Tenement. I bought a few sets and am putting together a warehouse/secret laboratory/whatever building. How did you the top course of stonework for the roof? Hirst Arts molds, perhaps?
Warning: Shameless Plug to follow :o
By the way, the building I'm putting together will be featured in my Pulp Alley game at The World at War Gaming Day at Fort Meigs in beautiful Perrysburg, Ohio, Saturday, November 7 at 9:00 am. Participants will receive a free Fortune Card kindly provided by Mr Phipps, and will feature, among other things, three minis hand-painted by the talented and gracious Mila!

A quick photo of my Fire Escape project for our Pulp Alley terrain. I always wanted to make one of these but had some big concerns about building it by scratch.
I designed this in ACAD and printed it with a nice Objet 3d printer which I get to play with once in awhile.
WIP - I just got some basecoats painted on, and I'm testing how it all fits before I glue it together ---

Splendid work, as usual, Dave!!
You've nailed it, looks, size, playability, atmosphere, everything but the pigeon deposits.
My jealousy knows no bounds.
I also designed/printed 3d doors and window frames as well ---
Those add immeasurably to the character of the DUST components,
not merely a finishing touch, but an essential, integral component.
It would be a damn shame, not to mention a missed business opportunity,
to NOT offer these for sale.
Made available through the usual Phipps Cartel "outlets', these gems would garner filthy lucre without needin' t'lean on folks to cough up de dough.
Limited stock and slow production only increases their cachet amongst practitioners.
Can you & Mila resist adding yet another tentacle to ensnare the eager acolytes?
Seriously Dave, Me want. Me want bad. Me want NOW!!

Unfortunately, my access to these 3d printers is far too limited and infrequent at this time.
Eventually, we'd love to make/offer some nice terrain pieces and bits for other players, but I'm guessing that is still 1-2 years away for us. As always, the number of things I want to do greatly outweighs what I can actually get done. :o lol

Good plan, I heartily approve.
That timetable however, needs massaging, requiring, as it does, patience on my part.
As always, the number of things I want to do greatly outweighs what I can actually get done.
Your two impediments are likely time, and/or money.
If it is Time, then it would expedient to turn operational control of the Phipps Cartel to Mila.
As long as it doesn't interfere with her excellence in scholastic endeavours, of course.
If it is Money, think Kickstarter.
Perhaps a modest one to fund your various DUST building enhancements.
Those have very real potential to be oversubscribed in short order.
I'll back any play Phipps & Daughter choose to make.

I think the trick for us is coming up with a way to produce these at a high quality and a reasonable price.

Pretty Please... ;D

Wow. The buildings are beautiful and I have 40 pages of thread to rifle through because I haven't seen this before. Thank you for providing me a texturing solution I was in need of. Your presentation makes it impossible to ignore your game (Very sneaky, very clever :) ). I need to know more.
Addendum: How did you build the plank doors on your buildings? I couldn't tell if they were balsa, plasticard, or something else. I was surprised how you achieved the distressed paint scheme; it looked much more complicated.

Gary, I'll paint them for you! ;D

Well, if I can get everything ready then I may actually start taking pre-orders for some of the terrain pieces by the 29th. :o
-
Thanks Oldben! They would definitely look better than if I painted em'!:)

@d phipps
Thank you for explaining the doors. I think I've almost got this terrain piece licked. It still needs some detailing, groundwork and paint but it's actually starting to look like a heliocaminus (sort of). I built it for Frostgrave but I think it could also end up in Lost Atlantis or a mysterious Roman ruin in Antarctica.

So is the final material a hard plastic or what exactly? Can you share any details of the mass-production?
I know you used a 3D printer for the prototypes, but I can't imagine that the final products will be all 3D printed. There's no way that'd be cost-effective.
-

I know you used a 3D printer for the prototypes, but I can't imagine that the final products will be all 3D printed. There's no way that'd be cost-effective.
Exactly -- most of the pieces are made of VeroBlue, RGD840 (photopolymer). I am really happy with how well it takes paint and glue. It is pretty darn rigid but still has some flexibility, and shows detail quite nicely.
I don't think we mass-produce anything related to Pulp Alley, and we're not starting now. I will make all these pieces personally and in small batches.
Cost-effective? Well, I'm confident that I can make a decent number of quality pieces available for our Pulp Alley players at a reasonable price - and that is all I want to do.
When I run out of pieces, maybe I'll make more... ;)
-
So each of these is printed instead of cast? I'm impressed that that can be made to be cost-effective.
You know... if you ever DO want to move up in scale, this pretty much seems tailor-made for a kickstarter to fund having it cast up in hard plastic. Unless somehow your 3D prints are subsidized or otherwise cheaper than they'd usually be, obviating the normal benefits from hard plastic castings.
-

Absolutely! We have discussed the Kickstarter thing as well and it is certainly a possibility - eventually.
One of the cool things about our process is how easy and quick we can get small numbers of pieces into the hands of players. For example, I could design a new piece today, add it to the store tomorrow, and start printing the next day.
-
Woah, I'm way behind on this one. Good stuff! :-*

Thanks guys. So glad you the 3d print stuff.
I am taking a break from printing any more terrain so I can focus on wrapping up our new Pulp Alley Tomb of the Serpent campaign. But I'm sure I get back to making some more stuff before the end of the year. ;)

Sally 4th makes several buildings that we use in our Pulp Alley Tomb of the Serpent campaign. The modular nature of their buildings make them so easy to use over and over again.

I did not find out until quiet recently that Fothrington Hall was haunted, but then again it did not surprise me.

The 3d printed diner looks good; my brother has just joined the 3d-printer-owners club so I'm going to have to start commissioning stuff from him...

That diner does look nifty. Is that available somewhere?
As for joining the 3d printing club, I did for a few hours. Board cooked itself, not sure if bad board or bad power supply. Am fixing now.

Too many places to name... or remember. ;)

Ayup! I have to change up the scenery every so often. :D
AND here's an old piece of terrain that Steve sent to me about 4 years ago. I don't know who made it but I finally got it ready to use in our Pulp Alley scenario tonight...

The station comes from the old Ertl Cow Town set. Livery stable I believe...

Liking the surrounding barrels, boxes and other clutter that give the buildings more character.

THANKS for the encouraging comments. More to come...... :D

Definitely needs a few bushes hedges and ponds and such. ;)

Love the new terrain.
Love the pigs.
Gives the place that special look. ;)

Here is a quick paint job on an Airfix building. I think I'll be able to use it in many different settings/genres....

I know he's done with 3d printing for a bit but I wish he'd get some of it cast in metal. He has a bunch of cool pieces. I don't think he's even shown anyone the awesome piano he made.

I hope so. In the meantime, I added a bunch of my designs to the Shapeways catalog if there's something specific you're looking for.

People ask me where I obtained the retro skimmers fairly often, I suspect they would sell well.
Very cool buildings!
-
THANKS, guys. Glad you liked it. I've been very impressed with the 4Ground stuff so far, but it can be a bit of a challenge finding it in the US. There are several buildings I'd probably get if I could find them.

Really love the garage building :-* super cool!

Although I'm guessing it's probably scratch build with some 3d printed parts?

You are 100% correct. The boat was scratch-built and the wheelhouse was 3d printed. And I use that same wheelhouse on a couple different boats, so it is removable.

I THOUGHT it seemed familiar...

So let's see these skimmers then.

I glued this stone dock together yesterday and painted it today. It is made from blocks from a Hirst Arts molds. I tried to give the wall a bit of an irregular appearance.

That looks awesome! I'm hoping we can find a stuff to scatter through the interior as well.
-
There is something deeply appealing about dirigibles. I'd love to play in either one of your games! Dave, keep us posted how it turns out. :)
-
One thing I found to be true for the Crossover scenario - if no-one has flight, and it is a later turn when the bomb is revealed, there is no way for anyone to get there with regular movement, so what I did, is added a "zipline" that called the cargo transport line, that someone could use as a move action. If they pass the random peril, they can drop off the line anywhere along its length. If they fail, well, they fell off Xd6 down the line. Of course, I always opened the bay doors just before they rolled...just to give them something to think about if they were going over them.

Fantastic idea on the Zipline definitely something we could use! :D

Okay, there's still a bit more gluing and painting to do, but I think it is ready for some Pulp Alley action! A big thanks to Crossover Miniatures for this well designed kit. And a big thanks to Jerry Terrell for putting it all together....

Same question here, thanks
No. Both kits come pre-painted, but you do the assembly yourself.
That "Old Workshop" was definitely easier of the two projects.
-
Thanks, I meant prepainted. Did you add anuthing?
-
We didn't do anything extra on Samuel's Garage. On the Old Workshop, I did just a little extra metal spray paint on the interior frame pieces.
-
The Zeppelin has turned out nice and the garage is very nice :-* :-* :-*

Now to see if I can get the shed in the EU....

I love the garage, the only weak point on those kits are the roofs. If you want to replicate tar paper roofing, grab some fine black sandpaper, cut it in strips, and glue it on to the roof. It really helps.

Never get tired of your posts.

Great looking table setup, Dave.
Due to the virus, the group I play Pulp Alley
have not been playing. :(
We all miss getting together to play.
Hopefully some day that day will come.

That hotel is amazing. Where did you get it?

The Hotel is mostly made of the DUST Warzone Tenement, with a bunch of scratch-built pieces added on.
-
Well it looks pretty good. I need to pull mine out of storage and do something with them.

I remember seeing those tenement pieces a few years ago. I'll check to see if they are still available. I bet it would be fairly usable terrain. Is there an interior?

Great video, Dave! I like how you admit that in some of our great modeling ideas that come out great, you sit back and say: "Well, that was too much work - I am never doing that again!" lol

I find these sorts of videos very helpful and I hope you do more. How about a video about the Hirst Arts molds that you use?

Nice work. Any hints about how it was made?
-
I love that roof on the South Seas hut. I attempted something similar using some rattan leaves but the result was disappointing. That looks like broom bristles meticulously laid down.

Bamboo placemats are found in many various diameters or with slats in different widths. They make great walls & roofs!! You can often find mismatches in thrift stores, or plenty of places online. Textured wallpaper is also useful here.
As with most things in life size matters, so scale accordingly.
Cut your doors & windows out directly, wrap around a box or a block the size you want, stiffen with white glue n'water, support internally with bigger bamboo (garden centres), add doorways & window frames with sticks or medium bamboo twigs, the offcuts make great shutters or awnings. Floors are dirt, unless you raise them on bigger bamboo stilts then your place mat is cut to become a deck, leave enough width for your standard single figure base size. Roofs are done the same way, cut to size(s) use a split bamboo twig as a cap. Sags, sways, ripples, & crookedness only add to the charming ambience of your tropical 3rd world wilderness domiciles.

Yes, bamboo placemats mats are very useful.
But for this building we wanted it to look "rough" - so it was actually made from broom bristles. Snip and lots of glue. :D ;)

Oh lol, I should have stood by my first statement. lol

Coffee stir sticks and match sticks for the interior?

Bamboo mats can also be used to make great rope bridges. Saves a lot of tying of the bits. Here's a couple of them put together by a friend of mine from bamboo sushi mats using chopsticks and string:

What's with the orange circles?
lol
I was wondering the exact same thing.
-
Yeah, they're normally for blast templates, but I'm not quite sure what the application is here.
-
The templates represent the "enemy patrols". Groups of NPC searching for intruders. In play they are wandering perilous areas.
