Title: Narsty Orcses
Post by: Thantsants on December 23, 2009, 02:25:11 AM
Bit of a break from the Elves - this mini has been shouting at me to paint it since I bought it off of ebay! He is also the start of a small warband for a game of Songs of Blades and Heroes I have planned...
This is also part of a larger project - to repair and paint up my old citadel orcs to go with the Wood Elf army I'm currently painting up.

Oooh - I love the good old Citadel miniatures. And I remember this guy, though unfortunately he has badly corroded during the last 25 years...

I still love these old Citadel guys  :)

I think they're still a kind of benchmark for orcs, not so many similar poses and similar looking orcs, but every one of them is quite unique !

cheers Thomas

Thanks for your kind comments!

After a long break and many distractions I've finished another Orc!! Hooray!!

Not much I know but I have several more nearly ready and a few old 80s ogres and a troll lined up in the queue... and I can hear my old 80s War Wyvern cryng out for a bit of TLC.

I think the shield is a little dull at the mo but can't think of a suitably crude and primitive design to daub across it - also his face looks a little tidier in real life - honest!!!

As I've been banned from buying any more old citadel minis off of ebay I 'spose I'd best get on and paint the ones I got!

Yeah me too! Seem to have that colour programmed into my brain - believe it or not I started with a base coat of Vallejo Russian Green!   o_o  >:(

Got some snotlings to paint up next so more verdant hues to come...

Or I could try harder and show off a more varied palette! Think my problem is that I'm adding yellow and Goblin Green to lighten up the highlights - any tips for darker greens that still pop would be appreciated!

Its not easy being green so I've painted up a little companion to keep the troll company.  >:D

Having painted one little snottie in about twenty minutes and being quite happy with the result I'm now seeing the appeal of 10 & 15mm wargaming...

... must stay away from Copplestone 10mm orcs

Cheers - got them off ebay from one of the regular sellers but they seem to have disappeared - shame as I have some ogres to paint and base.

I also have twenty more snotlings and thought they might look good on one of these bases with a burrow modelled on it, frollicing among the rocks!

ed. - just found the very same bases at evil mushroom games for a similar price -

First up - bit more work on the troll's skin tones - tried to darken and mute the green down a bit with brown and green/brown ink washes -

Thought I'd also post a few unfinished piccies to get me moving again - bad week for painting!

My oldest and favouritest mini, and possibly the first I bought -

and two orc minis that came with it -

... and Ruglud's Armoured Orcs - still minus Ruglud - wish I knew where he'd gone!

Wow!  At the risk of sounding cliched, they don't make them like that any more.  Can't wait to see the finished army.  As for Ruglud, he's probably wenching down at the local Orcish tavern...

That is exactly what a Wyvern should look like. It's a shame that it is such a rare model!

Beautiful stuff, very well done. It looks great.

I've always loved that classic citadel wyvern rider - nicely painted too! The only model I think that beats in from that range was the elven dragon rider, the one that the new GW plastic high elf dragon was based on.
Title: Re: Narsty Orcses
Post by: Thantsants on February 20, 2010, 07:33:13 PM
Yep that Dragon Rider is on the hit list too - missed out on one that went for about £30 a while back on ebay - haven't seen one since... :'(

Oh well my Wood Elves will have to make do with the Eagle Rider I've cobbled together out of an old mounted hero and a newer eagle - the old LOTR eagle was too small!

That'd be the "fourteen inch squint", then? (unless you hold the miniatures slightly further away than I tend to!)  :D

Neat old-school orceseses.

That's nowt - now that I have secured a Ruglud mini I can stop procrastinating and paint an entire legion of his finest troops... muhahahahah  >:D

- not looking forward to doing all those freehand shields though as I'm useless at it and will end up going blind, let alone acquiring a fourteen inch squint!

Any tips would be appreciated or does anyone know a good source of transfers?!

IRight that's it thay have inspired my 14-yyear-old-boy memories of great GW figures so have decided to raid my brother's collection of vintage GW orcs to have a go at painting them, though I think I'll start with the only GW plastics I ever bought (the combined fantasy box) if I can find it. All I have to do now is wait until April to sneak in and get them...

he hasn't got the Wyvern but he's got (or should I now say he had  :D :D) the big bow sets...

Then I might try my Bugmans

PS WOW
PPS mine (um my brother's) will never look as god

I quite liked the old fantasy regiment orcs - still got one or two that have survived the years somehow. I've got enough of the nice little goblin archers for a small unit too - look forward to seeing yours painted up!

The Bugmans minis were also very cool, especially the peg-legged, eyepatched champion with the big axe.

Quote

Might be being thick here but did you mean the bolt throwers?

I'm slightly gutted that I converted mine into a makeshift artillery piece for my genestealer cult...  ::)

(excuse the messy, drybrush-tastic paintjob!)

Still got most of the crew who will be painted up at some point to swell the ranks of the warband!  ;D

Lets hope your brother isn't as attached to his orcses as I am to mine...  >:D

Talking of Machineries of Destruction (what a cool name!) also really loved the goblobber even though it did have the stunties getting one over the gobbos!

The other two are brilliant too, the freehand is very good! I think closeups can really ruin the look of freehand!

Quote
It looks authentic, if that's the right word?

I'd be more than happy with that! My argument for the shields looking crude, should I need it,  would be that a cack-handed orc was supposed to have done it!  ;)

Quote
I think closeups can really ruin the look of freehand!

The camera is a harsh mistress! Got a few ideas for improving the next batch though...

Also keep seeing Notlob's bunch on ebay going for anything between £5 and £30! Wouldn't mind acquiring them to go with my growing Harboth's Unit - nice bit of fluff that links the two regiments of renown -

Quote
"Oy, boss"
"Wot"
"Bin ter see Notlob, like you said,"
"Yer............?"
"An’ I sez you sez if ‘e don’t find some stunties we eat ‘is boys,"
"Yer?"
"So ‘e sez ‘e’s goin’ ‘untin’ stunty,"
"Do wot?"
"E’s packin’ ‘is spearchuckers, an’ movin’ out. Goin’ ter ‘unt some stunties, ‘e sez,"
"WOT!"
"E’s packin’..."
"SHADDAP!"
"But I woz only...OW!"
"Get packin’..."
"Wot?"
"You ‘eard, Finks ‘e can leave ud behind, duz ‘e? We’ll show ‘im!"

...And so it was that Harboth’s Black Mountain Boys moved out of the Black Fire Pass to terrorise the lands beyond. The uneasy partnership between the Black Mountain Boys and Notlob’s bolt-thrower crews was dissolved, over a trivial misunderstanding due to the limited nature of the Orcish language. The Orcish Word for moving out can also mean deserting, running away or soiling one’s underwear...

Mind you having reread that if I've got Harboth's lot I don't need Notlob!!

It would have been on the back of the box the unit came in way back when these fellas were on sale - I think all the old 80s box sets came with a little story on the back of the box to give you a some background info - back in the days when GW had a sense of humour!!

Tis a shame that GW couldn't keep up the individuality and richness of the Warhammer world - the new style of orcs just seem completely soulless and humourless if that makes sense- even more cartoony than the old ones, but a rubbish cartoon produced only for merchandising opportunitites! The same could be said of most of the warhammer races these days but I think its particularly telling with da greenskins.  :-[

Quote
Mind if I ask what colours you used for the ogre's skin?

No probs Rob - several coats of a 50/50 mix of vallejo game Leather Brown and vallejo model flat flesh over a black undercoat (sure there's loads of equivalents for these). Gave this a slightly watered down brown ink wash and once dry several layers of the flesh mix watered down, adding more flat flesh to the mix each time for the highlights. Then to finish another watered down brown ink wash and once the whole model was done a very watered down black ink wash (you can see where some has collected and dried on the side of his right hand >:().

The camera seems to have picked up some yellow on some of the raised areas - must just be due to the lighting?

Hope that's of use - makes me sound quite knowledgable but I seem to do something different every time I pick a paint brush up...  ;D

May I present the once mighty Grom, half mad and delusional after his defeat at the hands of the dwarves, and his still loyal subjects -

Narx the Whiner, who heralds Grom's every move with a shrill fanfare.

Also, worshipping Grom almost as a God, are a small tribe of snotlings who have been following him ever since he joined the warband too.

Been a right pain to blend the little lead bases the snotties have into the scenic base with greenstuff  >:( Thank goodness for static grass!

Glad I only bought 20 on a whim on ebay, although they are cool little minis!

What size base would you put 'em on individually out of interest?

1P coin sized.

Colour me ignorant, but I don't know other currencies versions.

I guess the closest would be 20mm round washers?

I wouldn't base them on lipped bases as they would be nearly as tall as the models themselves and look a bit odd!  ;D

Yeah I love them and no, I definately wouldn't put them on resin bases. Who would be silly enough to do that!  ;)

I think a horde of individually based snotties would look v. cool swarming across the table top  >:D

Wouldn't envy you or your opponents the time it would take to move them all individually!  ;)

HAHA!

Yeah, I have to agree!

Alternative Armies did some by Kev Adams and they look JUST like the GW ones, so I might get a few of those, mix them in. I think Harlequin's ones were shown as a snotling 'phalanx'! lol

But yeah, hordes of the wee ones! I think that's how you go about it in SOBAH rather than swarm bases, you have proper swarms!
Perhaps you need to get a rotary tool, they you could have filed the base away in a matter of minutes, and just stuck the snotties down...

Also, do you remember the background for them in 40k? With Mushlings and Snotrooms! Snotlings that eat too much fungus and eventually become more fungus than snotling! hehe.

That takes me back - snotrooms!  ;D

40K orks were even dafter!

Would look great but not sure I'd fancy your chances with your activation rolls!  ;) Is it two failures in a row and play passes to your opponent - law of averages aren't on your side - that's why I've "cheated" and gone with phalanxes  lol - one roll for 10 or so minis!

Cheers - I know - the greenies are shouting at me too -

Got 4 Norse guys I want to finish that are nearly done...  :D

.... but just taken delivery of 2 gnomes, male and female barbarians and a red indian type shaman who has cleric on his slotta tab and may just squeeze into my Norse band.  ::)

Well the greenies have to eat something - which will be the mission objective in the game of SOBH I'm planning...  >:D

Talking of games, Hetz old chum - thought it might be a laugh to have a go at the Orc's Drift scenarios when we finally hook up for that game of WFB3 you mentioned a while back...

Hope to be back on track by the weekend...  ;D

Well plenty of time to get painted - I figure the latest addition to the family is due anytime now and I should be ok for a daypass by the time the summer hols arrive!  ;D

Fair enough...

They look great and I haven't got either of them, OK I  have a variant of the hero figure.  I'm really liking the
skin and the rusty metal. Cool shield too, I always run out of ideas to incorporate that big central boss.

As always I think the terrain is great, I'm going to have to borrow you bases of rough ground scatter. BTW do you have a glass top to your table?

I should add though my unit is 10 strong so I get to take longer.
Title: Re: Narsty Orcses
Post by: Thantsants on March 25, 2010, 09:00:24 AM
Yep mine is 10 strong too - 8 are only in the stripping stage from my terrible paintjobs from years ago - so bit of a cheat on my part really!  ::)

(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/Orcs/P3030274.jpg) (http://s591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/Orcs/?action=view&current=P3030274.jpg)

The top of my desk does have a glass top and an old green leather top underneath - looks ok in photos (someone mistook it for a pond/swamp a while back!) and it saves me unrolling the huge grass mat each time.

Those little rough ground bases are dead easy - they were actually an afterthought to use up the bits of plasticard I had leftover after I'd based the trees and all the clump foliage that was also left over. They're the ones I'm happiest with and really lift the look of my scenery I think!

Happy painting!  :D

Ahh you see I want the boar with the skull on, that I do not have!!! You have a few marauder boys in there too, I have a bunch of them including the general with the back banner to sort out too.

I recognize the look of your old pre-repaint minis, quite a bunch of mine looked like that. And I also thought you had a swamp/pond thing going on with your table. It looks good!

Had a good look at your blog and I am very envious of your wyvern rider, I have the 80s marauder one but without rider and the 90s one with Azhag on but haven't got round to the citadel goodness.
Title: Re: Narsty Orcses

Just had a look on stuff of legends - your marauder general mini looks rather nice!

Its a shame the Marauders seem a little smaller than the citadel boar riders - spose they could be a couple of gruntas that have sneaked into the snortas mob?! Still quite like them, although the boars aren't a patch on the citadel ones - especially old skull face!!  >:D

I have the 90s Azhag in bits at the moment - quite like the wyvern but was never much of a fan of Azhag himself... not a patch on the 80s fella!

Nice how you've done the shields as old chaos warrior ones.  I used some of the first chaos warrior plastic kit ones for mine but I think I'll have to revisit them.

Do I remember right that you are missing some of the command? I'm sure I saw some  on Ebay recently, couldn't say when as I'm not watching them.

I only have to be as good as the artistically challenged orc/chaos warrior who is supposed to have daubed the design onto the shield in the first place - hehehe!

Cheers for the thought Erny but I managed to track Ruglud down eventually and got a few more troopers in the bargain!
Title: Re: Narsty Orcses

Drum roll please.....

Dah Dah - I've actually painted a whole regiment instead of mucking about with individual minis!!  :D

Wonders what a bit of elbow grease can do!

Anyway here's the rest of Ruglud's Armoured Orcs, or as they will be rechristened at some point for Orc's Drift, the Vile Rune Orcs (note emblems on Maggot's totem pole!), the severed hand tribe (Ruglud's shield - really the throttled skull's symbol pinched from Titan (Fighting Fantasy!), or the dreaded Kwae Karr tribe...

...and maybe King Fyarr's bodyguard too!

Here's the background story that came on the original box...

The Crooked Eye Orcs had travelled many miles westward to the Old World, suffering the sniping of mountain Goblins, incessant rain, and the endless whining of Bambrag, their incontinent shaman.

Once, they skirted a ruined Dwarfhold. Fear of spirits kept them from sheltering inside, but, a single Orc Hero named Ruglud had dared to enter. He returned unharmed, but had not spoken since, and stated blankly into space.

The Orcs huddled in the rain before a rough stone wall across a narrow pass, while Chief Gudruk Bonechewer yelled at a figure on the battlements.

'Stoopid!', he screamed, 'Do we look like Chaos boys?'

'Zog off!' echoed the reply.

Gudruk returned to the tribe, dodging the hall of stones and garbage that accompanied this witty riposte.

'Lissen,' he said. 'Them kak-'ead Gobboes reckon the Chaos boys took ev'ryfink over. They ain't comin' out an' they ain't lettin' nuffink through. They got bows an' rocks an' spears an' stuff - if we was to try and get 'em, they'd crump us to bits.' He thought for a while.

'We needs volunteers', he announced at length. His warriors developed a sudden and compelling interest in the ground at their feet.

'Or armour', whined Bambrag, 'Couldn't touch us if we 'ad cans like real Chaos boys.'

'We ain't got cans, 'ave we, Trickle-legs?' snarled Gudruk.

'Cans... jus' lyin' where they dropped... all black an' spiky.'

It was Ruglud who spoke. Gudruk gave him a good shake to speed the recovery of his senses, and he continued dreamily.

'Down this Stunty-hole... lotsa rooms ... lost... big room... big enough to stand up in ... big pile of bones an' gear... spiky Stunties an' reg'lar ones... wiped each uvver out...'

'Yerrrss!' cried Gudruk, 'We'll 'ave some o' that! Come on, boys - it's Goblin-gizzard for supper!'.

A swift expedition returned to the Dwarfhold. The ill-fitting plates were roughly hammered into shape and held

together with whatever came to hand. By nightfall, a small unit of armoured warriors was ready.

As the gear's discoverer and the bravest, meanest and certainly the most stupid Orc, Ruglud was made leader, At Gudruk's suggestion, Bambrag became the regimental musician on the Xylobone, a traditional Orcish instrument, and Maggot - Gudruk's youngest and most irritating whelp - joined the ranks as standard-bearer.

The tribe feasted upon Goblin-flesh long into the night - all except for Ruglud, who couldn't get his helmet off, and was reduced to sucking broth through a straw.

BATTLECRY The most frequent battlecry is a repetitive chant of 'Gobbo fer tea, Gobbo fer tea, Gobbo, Gobbo, Gobbo fer tea!', with 'Stunty', "Uman' and so on being substituted for 'Gobbo' as appropriate.

He is looking mighty fine quick paint job or not! Do you use real slate for your bases, I need to pay better attention to mine.

Cheers Erny - all the scenic bases I use are resin ones - the slate drybrushes up really nice! Can't remember where I got these round ones from...

Looking back Fighting Fantasy must have been where it all started for me too! Had a load of the game books as a kid but could never find a copy of Dungeoneer - or Titan and Out of the Pit for that matter!

They were both ebay purchases in another fit of nostalgia! Dungeoneer is now on the wishlist though... also just found out that there is a sequel to the Trolltooth Wars!!!  :o

Didn't find the gobbo though, three identical marsh trolls did turn up though, no idea I had three...

Yep, three old citadel marsh trolls. They could look cool as a unit, (I'm sure this must have been the plan) but three identical trolls with very limited conversion possibilities?  I've got goblin bows coming out of my ears LeadAsbestos, if you have some lead gobbo spears I may be convinced that a unit of two rocks just as well.

I also found about 10 ish of the white dark elf plastic x-bows they ain't right but they could be a good contemporaneous swap for the x-bows you do need Thantsants. Oh and my bits box is more of a bits garage and cellar so I often don't find what I'm looking for but always find something. I found a small box full of Judge Dred stuff the other day when I though I just had a couple of bits of it...

Thanks for the tip Rob but... http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=1646.1035

Bought, paid for and read a while ago! Not a patch on the Trolltooth Wars which I definitely reccomend!

Whoops!

Gawd, I hate Monty Python, drags on so much! Get to the point! I know that's what's meant to be funny, but it's too much!

The ogre is excellent! Jolly well done!

I look forward to seeing what you do to the minis I am sending you!

Although to be fair having received and watched most of the Python's box set of all the TV series there are one or two flat moments amongst all the insane genius!  ;)

I'd never noticed the similarity between that Ogre and Tim before. Do you think it was intentional?

I ruined python for myself by watching and quoting it ad nauseum as a 15 year old. Its still funny I just know it all by heart now which takes some of the sheen off.

Anyway excellent Ogre your collection continues to grow with the really character pieces.

All I remember is thinking it was childish nonsense and not very British at all! I had a very geeky friend who wouldn't stop quoting it when we were growing up. Didn't help it. When I got around to watching it, I just felt stupid.

I prefer witty comedy. Sorry.  ;D

OK I tried but I couldn't let that one go so sorry for the slight derailment that is about to happen normal service will resume momentarily.

Monty Python is about as British as it gets with its obsession with class, irony and innuendo. It is very clever and witty stuff. If you only see the silliness, which  at the time was an almost unique (let us not forget Milligan)  breath of fresh air, then you are missing half the show. The stuffy critics in '69 said it was just silliness!

Cheers Erny - I reckon so! Would have painted him in black and red if I wasn't so crap at black - plus he wouldn't have looked smelly enough!

Anyway don't worry Rob - you'll find as you get older you begin to regress mentally and things like Python make more sense than the 6 'O Clock News - and I'm only 30!  ;D ;)

I can imagine having a friend speaking nothing but Pythonese when you haven't got a clue what he's on about might get a bit wearing... same round our house when I hook up with my brothers and we slip into Reeves and Mortimer mode - Mother is this far from having us all sectioned!  :D lol

Nice vid by the way Phreedh - haven't seen that one in a while.  :D

Yeahhhh...

I have to say, there are silly comedies I like. Beavis and Butthead is one, but that's probably just because I understand the references...

I like the crazy artwork in Monty Python though. Cool stuff.
