Title: Source for 28mm Romanian Chasseurs
Post by: Skrapwelder on January 01, 2010, 11:59:08 PM
I'm working on an Ottoman army for VSF and am trying to find a figure suitable for the Romanian Chasseur shown in the Osprey Russo Turk War book. Double breasted coat with a falling collar and a kind of  bowler hat.

Thanks,

Mike

You won't find any, as this is a very unique uniform, especially the "bowler" hat.

I searched for them too, sorry
while performing the role of "chasseurs", the original term meant "mountaineers"  like in chasseurs alpines.

I am afraid we will have to wait until someone makes them :(

I guess You know this movie

Thanks for the film link. I had not seen that before.  I guess I'll have to find something suitable for conversion. Brigade makes a WW1 Italian Alpini that has the hat but a single breasted coat.

as far as I know, it says that the romanian line infantry had similar uniforms as the austrians.
Since the Chasseurs had the same uniform as the artillery (apart from the hat), may be this one was copied too??
As far as I recall, the double breast looked similar to Prussian cavalry uniform (there are some reeanctment groups) - maybe this could be a source - and there are the Perry ACW heads with slouch hats ??

a bit complicated but what can You do....

These might work. Fairly easy to convert the trouser leg into a boot top and shorten the jacket to above the crotch. The hat would be easy.

the long coat could be a shorter winter coat

Nice clip.  I especially like the crowd of waving civis behind the saluting dias who can't possible see a thing from where they are standing!!   :D

This sounds like the kind of niche minis that Tiger Miniatures might be interested in. Their newer figs are far superior to the old, and they've been doing Eastern European minis. Email them and suggest it.

a very good idea! I knoe they have plans to include such special units in the future when they will cover the rest balkan states (Montenegro, Romania), some feedback might accelerate the process!

I thought chasseur was French for hunter?

yes, but in several languages, mountaineers are called hunters - Chasseurs Alpines, Vanatori de Munte, Gebirgsjäger - and apparently they are always elite forces. I was once in Aldo Adige and had the opportunity to meet some locals, and if people from the mountains are similar everywhere, I can understand why.  Think of Highlanders and Ghurkhas, just as an example.

An old man told who had been living to experience the building og the pass highways and railway tunnels tols me that before that, they used to smuggle stuff over the high passes. I asked him why they did not use donkeys and he told me - donkeys are of no use, because they can carry only 100 kg and their food too, and a man carries the same and has a better "payload"......
just an anecdote ....

I think I remember seeing a German jager in a similar uniform in someones WWI or Franco-Prussian war line but with a flat-topped hat. Might be able to file them down to a round hat.

Whilst not Chasseurs Outpost Wargames Service has a couple of Romanian Dorobanti in 28mm that they will be releasing. A pic of one can be seen on the Russo Turkish war yahoo group.

I'm a member and went in for a look but could only find some Romanian Cossacks.

Romanian Cossacks.

Now You'll really have to tell me what exactly this is meant to be?
Cossacks are really widespread, but Romania?
Anything I can imagine in this matter are hired Cossacks in private service of rich landowners, but nothing in the way of ethnicity or regular service.

Guys,

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RussoTurkishWar1877/photos/album/545469879/pic/1210788208/view?picmode=&mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=41&count=20&dir=asc

Here is a link to the 28mm Romanian Dorobantz infantryman, sorry for confusion he is stood next to a Russian Ural cossack. A rear view can be found elsewhere in the photo file. There is also a standing firing variant of this leg pose, others will be added along with suitable command but as yet I have no timescale. I would suggest addressing an queries or interest direct to Jeff at Outpost Wargames Service.

Cheers,

Geoff

thx, but I can't get access, maybe my firewall

no confusion here, bon't bother.
Thing is, in the time of question, Romania had recently gradually gained independence, and the nobility, who for centuries had employed merceneries from Albania (and possibly cossacks too), was about to adjust to a new role in the country - so the Cossacks could have been the private retinue/bodyguard of af nob who tried as officer in the army

Edit:

finally saw it - nice
did not know there are so many figures around for it

also a lot of options for RCW, if one takes it easy with the Russian uniforms
the new mounted cossacks from Askari are also cool

A useful clip - but something struck me as odd. Go to the 2:07 mark - is that a woman marching along wearing a Havelock cap?  ???

Excellent idea but too many negative points, I will prob commission some to be made through Outpost, and will start with a trial figure to make sure that the look is right, just wanted an idea as to pose, for a trial figure was thinking of either a standing or kneeling firing figure although they did charge as part of the storming divisions involved during the taking of the Grivitsia redoubts and helped with the taking the Kanli redoubt which was one of the two redoubts.
