So, here is Jacob Zuma the (Zulu) president of South Africa getting hitched to his 5th wife yesterday (Zulus are polygamous, lucky swine)
I don't know how much you can really tell from the ceremonial dress of 21st Century Zulus about their fabled ancestors (they probably get their fancy dress made in Taiwan these days, same as the rest of us), but I noted a couple of interesting things from these pics...
1. Look at the new Mrs Zuma's little shield - it is indeed wobbly like the new Foundry ones, and not perfectly flat and regular, like some unreconstructed folk would have you believe.
2. Leopard / Cheetah skins are not really yellow at all, but a kind of browny off-white.
3. There's a huge amount of colour variation in the monkey tail kilts. Some of them are almost pink.

Right, I'm off to paint bright white trainers on all my Zulus...
-
By the way, both Jacob and his missus are ever such a light shade of brown - so I'm going back to my original theory about high status Africans being lighter-skinned than the masses.
Which fortunately, is how I painted mine :D
Blue people indeed... ;)
-
I can't imagine them Nikes are authentic, they wouldn't be that white, not in Natal in January ;)
-
I enjoyed watching that on the news yesterday , lots of wobbly bits to oggle. :-* rather like that really bad Allan Quartermain and the Temple of Skulls movie .

Our old law office had some dealings with King Goodwill, for some reason. Great guy.
And yes, my sheild is uneven, as are most every one I've seen. (Note the difference as opposed to the perfect shaped cardboard sheilds used by extras in "Zulu Dawn" in background shots)
Isn't President Zuma a communist or something?? Or was a commie?
-
The ANC has historic links with the South African Trade Union movement and South African Communist Party (SACP doesn't contest elections as a separate party but rather fields their candidates under the ANC banner). Zuma is a member of SACP. What of it?

Don't be silly - Ian Knight's exhaustive Zulu studies clearly indicate that Cetewayo instructed his impis to wear Converse All-Stars. White trainers indeed!
-
Why do I want to paint some Zulus with fat white trainers, and big alarm clocks round their necks? Make a South African rap collective, ZWA... lol
Time to lie down again, Bobby...

I just watched this and , my Lord!, what a turkey! It is such a shoddy production it is worth a review.

nope. he is a berlusconi-like populist. no political direction at all.
and he pubblically admitted that he raped a girl (maybe cousin?) many years ago.

Well I did warn you. :D

LOL! How cosmopolitan.
That's OK, everyone has their bad mioments. Even Smokey, for I killed a man in Nashville once.
:D

lucky swine...
You think? Five times the trouble, thinks I. :)

Was he a country and western fan? If so, that's ok ;)

I did some work with a few community workers from Sudan for a forum against racism (here in Australia, not in Sudan) and the bloke said that was a major cause of separation in Sudan, even amongst people native to there: as people were progressively darker, the worse they were regarded socially, and the more negatively they were descriminated against.
I don't really have any way to back this up aside from an anecdote, though.
But what I'm trying to say is, your observations are probably correct.

I heard the same when I was in the Carribean.

Zuma's father was Old Bill, his mum was a maid and he never received an education. Hardly high status. Do you get some kind of skin-lightening treatment once elected president, then?
Nelson Mandela, however, is Xhosa royalty. He's quite light-skinned too. But then again lots of Xhosa are. I think you need a bit of wider sample before you can make any assumptions.

I did specify it was a Sudanese man... and that it was anecdotal.
I'm sure there's plenty of information against my casual hypothesising... thanks for bringing it up.

Getting completely off topic now but my ex wife was Thai. That culture too thinks white skinned people are higher class because they are less likely to be out working in the rice fields . She came from a farming family and is dark skinned but she would stay out of the sun as much as possible to stop getting darker.
I prefer darker skinned ladies myself. ;D

A tan was once associated with working outside. Now, a tan can be associated with luxurious holidays on 60 ft. yachts, too ;D Funny how these things change...
-

Yes he was. He was also a jealous husband (rightly so).
lol

You see they do wear trainers !I always argued they left theirs at home when going to war so as not to dirty them.At last proof of my theory!! >:D
