Title: My Pulp City- new: 100 Voices, Bramble, Feartigo etc. (p. 20)
Post by: leonmallett on January 24, 2010, 06:42:30 PM
I have never posted pictures of my minis to Lead Adventures Forum before, so i thought I'd post my Pulp City minis. I alos have a lot of Superfigs that I may get around to photographing, as well as Mutants and Madmen (Black Hat) and sundry others, so you may get that I am a superhero minitures nut.

I have really become enamoured of the Pulp City minis, generally loving the whole range. So much so that I have set myself a goal this year to paint at least one example of every available mini.

Here are the first examples for posting. Comments and criticism (and any advice!) welcome. :)

Some very nice work indeed, Leon. I am particularly impressed with Mourn, Trail, and Nuke, in no particular order. Particularly so with Trail, as I don't really care for the sculpt as such, but you've done quite a job with him, and the paint job makes him quite presentable:)

Thanks.

I ought to be honest and say that Chmp Chi was painted verrrryy quickly, just to get something 'done', and so even though he turned out okay, it didn't take very long, maybe an hour or two in total. <where is the shame emote...?>

Thanks Doc. I tend to prefer the more 'spandex-y' or typical supers type models, which for me includes those you mentioned. Trail I have loved since first seeing previews of it, and I plan to paint a second eventually. On another board I have seen a wildly inventive one where someone has added a top hat and has painted a garish but appropriate colour scheme, with gribbly stuff threatening to encroach. Here is the link (http://ups.imagup.com/06/1258771285.jpg).

Three more minis. I may start a second thread to show my non-Pulp City minis that I have photographed recently.

Blood Rose: painted a while ago, I wasn't overly happy with the results so may try again at some point.

Harrier: one of the first Pulp City minis I finished. As you can see by the fuzzyness I am still getting to grips with photographing minis.

Gentleman: probably among the first couple of Pulp City minis I finished, I think. My painting is changing from years of painting GW armies to now focusing on individuals. If I did this one again, there are a couple of things I would do differently (like a blue wash on the guns for a little contrast like I did on Howler). No prizes for guessing the inspiration for the colour scheme...

I can't say I've ever been overly interested in the Pulp City game (I'd probably be the only Melbournian playing it) but I think a few of these will certainly find their way onto my painting pile before the year is out. I love the contrast work you've done on Nuke.

I love Nuke. I have been lucky enough to see some of these minis in the flesh, and Nuke's pic doen't do him justice.

I always check out Leon's Blog Pulp Citizen every time I log on (right after I check out my own). It's loaded with useful tips, great pics and some random ramblings.

Thanks Rob.

My latest completed mini. Ace of Wraiths has taken months from start to finish, mainly of sitting on the shelf with little being done. I have mixed feelings about the end result, but included is my first OSL attempt.

Ace of Wraiths:

Also, I rephotographed Solar after a bit of touch up recently. The model had been 'finished' for some time, but then I noticed a chip and went back and added some highlights in a couple of places.

All of your stuff is fantastic Leon. I want to break out my paints and go nuts on my supers right now. However, Bloodblowl and Gaslight are taking higher priority tonight.

Damn, I want some of these figures... :-*

Thats a great collection of figures: lots of different techniques, colours and styles.  I particularly like how you painted Blood Rose and Harrier.

It doesnt hurt that the Pulp City figs look so good (just so, so expensive...).

More please :)

Thanks. I have 3 more I hope to finish in the next few days, and another 3 ready to photograph. I suspect I will have a backlog of minis for photographing soon. Thanks for looking in, and I have to say I really enjoy your blog: to any Resident Evil fans, it is well worth checking out Cheetor's blog if you haven't done so already.

I like both of those Lee. Impressed especialy with the vampire! Like the little dog too. Kitty is very characterful. She looks a bit demonic-don't know if that's intentional.

Keep it up- you must be nearly finished your painteing challange by now- surely. What's the running total?

Kitty may well be demonic (her brief blurb indicates it isn't known if she is or isn't), so I think it is a quite fitting look.

39 done. 15 more to go + whatever is released bewteen now and the end of the year. I'd like to get at least one or two more done this month.

Bits and pieces time.

Some more Sentry Bots; this time painted to match my increasingly prevailing inclusion of some kind of purple on as many of my Villains as possible. Just quick paint-jobs for gaming:

And now for something a little different - variety of markers (Tokens) to represent Resources and Agenda objectives. Some are recycled from bit done previously and mounted onto a standard base size of 30mm:

Villains always turn to purple when black is out of stock ;)
Really nice minis. We're still waiting for Pulp to restock on the starters.

You are right - I am getting 'fatser', but my girth is proportionate to my age, I feel!

Just kidding mate! I agree this was my fastest month of output in the Challenge yet; I was happy to turn out those extra Sentry Bots and the markers. I have another 7-10 markers in various stages of idea/creation that should be whipped up soon. Well soon-ish...

Thanks.  :)

The Tokens were painted so quickly that WiP would not really work; also my painting of minis is so...ill-disciplined that there is no point in trying to do WiP there either.

You sure have a lot of their models, every one?  I too think you are getting better at painting.  I like some of their sculpts and back stories, but I got my plate full and barely play as it is.  One day I might get around to painting some supers, I like Super Zed he must be new.  I like Ace of Wraths backstory the best.

Almost. ;) One I am working on getting, and then there are some new releases coming up. I am planning to try and paint at least one xample of every available mini from Pup City by the end of the year. Currently I have 10 left to do, but there are more new releases due this year, so that target will grow.

There is some cool fluff. Hopefully when the book arrives in the next couple of months (or thereabouts), the fluff will be expanded further.

The web site was hacked a couple or so weeks ago, and has been moved over to a new dedicated server. Pulp Monsters are still trying to get their site, store and links/dowloads up and running, but it is taking them longer than initially hoped.

The new printed rules will be released Monday I believe; the plan eventually is to have an updated free download guidebook - basically the same rules content but without fluff etc. I don't know the ETA on that.

Back to using my old back-drop. A couple of 'big guys' this time around. The 'old' and the 'new'.

Iron Train - the last of the Hero Starter Set to be painted in my collection:

That's nice posing on Iron Train- Getting the proper sense of him swinging a roundhouse punch with his right arm can be fiendishly difficult. I think it was a good idea to put him on a flat base, rather than the dedicated MaxMini resin base- He always looks like he's toppling backwards otherwise.

Cheers, but a happy accident more than anything.  8)

It was more that I am trying to them my bases to an extent; Heroes mostly have not too damaged streets. Hero/Villains generally have whatever is lying around and suits most. Villains have more damaged terrain looking bases. Ulthars all have Dragon forge Lost Empires bases. Sentry Bots have a tech-deck type to make them suitable for sci-fi.

That's an interesting idea, to subtly show their team affiliation with thematic basing. As I go about prepping mine, I've been trying to match basing to the character of the individual, but it's not always immediately obvious. I've been making an exhaustive study of the hobby section on the Pulp City forum and I think that there are some common errors that people fall into when it comes to basing (screwing up Solar's levitation effect, for instance). Here are a couple of WIP shots of my based up Iron Train and my Solar:

I think Solar is supposed to float like that, as his slotta tab is on the bottom of his cape, not on his feet.

The problem is that if one were to use his slotta tab to base him up, he doesn't get enough ground clearance for a convincing levitation effect. Also, the way the flat side of his cape is done, he would be floating tilted backwards with his feet sticking out. I solved the ground clearance problem by basing the cape on the curb of a resin base and I solved the tilt problem by changing the angle with a shaped greenstuff wedge.

Sorry for the momentary thread hijack, Leon...  ::)

No worries.

Re: Solar and his cape; the tab is intended to be snipped and if you check him out his heels then snugly sit into the cape - check out the 'studio' version. It may seem odd, but that is how it was intended. That said, your solution is excellent!  :)

Certainly is Ikea.

Yes. The 4 compartment bits are Muji CD storage, and the trays below have draws and match the dimesnions of the CD cases exactly. Those small dividers fit in with a lot of room in front, and to top and sides.

The panther is Stalker, the companion to Solar/Avatar of the Jaguar, and should be out in the next few weks. Can't wait to paint one (or two) myself.

Some lovely paintings in here  :-* And you certainly did great one the new Pulp City Trio. Rather tempted picking up these myself - especially Dark Solar would be extremely useful to me.

Did you get the British Supreme as well? That's really such a cool sculpt, and would love see you paint that one, too.

Painting it I am glad there were no 'extras' like that; I alwasy find that (ralistic or not) models with their 'vegetables' on show just look silly, since you end up focusing on said 'vegetables' instead of everything else. Plus it is a mystical jaguar companion - it may not need 'em... ;)

Wonderful paint job and what an excellent choice of colours :P

Rather tempted buying him when he is out. He looks a bit on the big side for my usual 28-30mm stuff. How tall is this guy? He'll looks 40mm-ish to the top of the head, is that the case?

But who cares. A great sculpt and with a minor conversion he'll be filling in the role he is meant for in my collection.

I measure around 41-42 mm to top of the head from the base. From heal to top of head is around 35-36 mm.

There will be another new mini posted soon I hope. :)

Greetings
I just found this thread and looked through every page. It's interesting to watch how your painting has improved over time. Remarkable project.
yes. My thoughts exactly. While the first minis weren't bad, they had not the .."crispness", the "neatness" the later paintjobs have.
Photography might also have improved.
But photos work with what is there, and what is there has improved enormously

It is an eye candy to see this development. Thank you much for showing us.
Jo

That's some great work there! Loving the thread! I'm not a big fan of superhero stuff but this is cool. As has been said its great to see someone progress so well at painting! The understanding of colour and neatness of your painting is getting better and better and better! Keep up the good work!

Those are all Pulp City....the price tag is a big high, the quality is good, but the price keeps intimidating me...I do want to get some like Dr Mercery, the time girl with the katana, the Croc guy, the fencer and bowman.

I've spent a good evening to 3am going back through the supers section here and searching on eBay to see what's available for supers games. There are some awesome stuff shown on LAF.

Loving this thread.

Actually 4 greens!

The green of the robes is different to the green of out cloak, and the blade was done a different way again (blue-green with a thin green glaze).

As an aside, do you have any idea when we might expect the new edition of the rules to be officially released?

Time frame is something we hope to firm up in the next few weeks.

The revisions to the cards are essentially done. Then our poor unfortunate designer (a splendid fellow BTW!) has to translate our rules into over new game 100 cards, and we need to go through layout.

I honestly expect it to be out before the end of the year, hopefully sooner. I know when we would like it to launch, but a few things need to line up safely for that to happen so i won't tempt fate. We will announce a date as soon as we can.  :)

Damn you, damn you *shakes his fist, raging to the sky*, why did you have to post all this eyecandy and why did I have to click on the link?  ;)

I've been quite content for some time now but really, really want to get my hands on some Pulp City minis now. The only thing stopping me is my strained bank account but I suspect I will cave in soon and get my grubby hands on some that I have been drooling over...  :D

I have visited the homepage, so have you any idea when the new rules will be available? Will there be any rules for constructing your own Supremes? In all honesty, I don't really need new miniatures, but the rules seem pretty solid so I'd be happy as a pig in mud if I could use what I've already got.

Hopefully the KS will be delivered on time (September) so the rule book will be available to buy from sometime around then or shortly after.

We have plans for a supplement covering build your own Supremes, Minions and Monsters. :)

As for the bases, the answer is simple - I cheat! :D

Wildman has a Fenris base and Aurelius is on a Dragon Forge base. Most of my Pulp City basing is on bases from one or the other. I thoroughly recommend both, although DF's resin material feels better to work with IMHO. :)

My Pulp City figures are languishing as well. I was very excited to receive my collector's package, but that excitement was heavily damped by the amount of time it took to sort, and the number of missing items in the box. I'm still waiting on the replacement bits almost two months after reporting them. Until that gets sorted out I likely won't spend any further time on it.

The other downside is that the folks who would be interested in play Pulp City are playing Batman Miniature game, so it's tough to tear them away from that for another superhero game.

Share some game-shots when you play a game. I'd love to see the figures in action!

Thanks Jim. One of the nice things about The Way is that other Factions serve as an entry point of sorts since at least 1 or 2 Supremes in most other Factions have members in the Way.

A concious decision not to, for the reason of wanting him to look like part of thr green=brown tide, plus I had previously painted one in a Carnage scheme for a minis exchange, so decided to eschew the most obvious option. :)

Hi Puuka. :)

Pulp City is populated by all sorts of Supremes and the lesser Minions representing a lot of different styles and concepts. :)

Hovercats are the brain child of our main visual designer, Melvin. They are cats wearing jet-packs and armed with catling cannons, and are one example of Minions in the games. Minions range from these to the fiendish cyber-fish Ankle Biters to Ninjas, through to robots, human Vigilantes and more. A little of something for everyone. :)
