Title: encounter at desert
Post by: demi_morgana on May 11, 2007, 07:34:33 AM
time to start spreading spam in "workbench" section :D
some tinme ago I finally decided to do sth (=paint) several west wind models I purchased last year... I chose 4 bad cthultists and gooodie scotland yard inspector to make a display base;
the idea is: evil cultist and his evil-assistants have been surprised at the desert while summoning A THING  goodie-goodie inspector (let's call him LeGrasse :P ) desperately tries to stop them...
end of the story - time for the first set of WIP pictures :)

yup - there's great set of minis: 2 "aegyptian" cultists + 2 depraved "western" ones (they all will be part of display)

next update:
tomorrow I hope to post pics of finished composition; I realised the "encounter" shows one of possible ends of adventure I'm preparing for my gamers - we'll see if they can survive evil plotting of mad cthultists, muahahahahahaha...

I don't. It's disgusting. Reminds me of the end of my grandmother's nose!

Seriously, lovely stuff. Really horrible tentacles (I mean it in a good way, obviously!).

yet another very handy talent in pulp :)

Gotta get some tentacled monsters now...

thanks!
I hope to take better pictures because on these colors turned out too pale (have no idea why actually... :? ), for instance first pic in the topic got much more "juicy" colors than the final ones...
anyway - I hope one day I'll be able to put my hamers in similar situation to the photo, IA IA IA SHUB NIGGUTARH!!!

@StevenK: go for it! there's never enough of tentacle-monsters! :D

She has a tentacle frowing from her nose then?

Nice work, like the cheme on the tentacles, very good wet look. Bit like Flipper gone mental.

@wayswatcher: maybe Plynkes wanted to say that his grandmother used to live  beneath cursed sands of iraq-desert?

Not quite, but she did go on holiday to Israel once. Perhaps the Negev is where this scene is actually happening?

Post by: demi_morgana on May 17, 2007, 07:00:06 PM
well according to the book the adventure happens in Kirkuk in iraq, but because iraq is not far from israel - I can modify the adventure... the plane can crash, can be hijacked by mad cultists, attacked my yuggoth air forces or whatever

I was just going to complement you on the chosen color scheme on the tentacles. Pale pinkish-grey...or is it greyish-pink. No I apparently have to withdraw that compliment! ;-)

Something just struck me:

is it possible that Tolkien had read Lovecraft when he wrote that bit about the Watcher in the Water?

Or is it just a bit of plain old medeival kraken mythology thrown in?
Title: encounter at desert

It is possible, but Tolkien strikes me as the kind of chap who wouldn't be seen dead reading 'trash' like that. Except maybe in secret under the covers when there weren't any other Oxford University professors around.

that's pretty interesting question... I don't think there's a person who could deny tolkien wasn't lovecraft's psycho-fan...
just try to imagine: j.r.r. tolkien himself worshipping great ancient ones!

Thanks Polynikes.

I now have this picture (the only one they ever show of old JRR here in the US) with his pipe, sitting and giggling under the bed sheets as he flips through Weird Tales.

Sorry about that. Here's a picture of him as a dashing lieutenant in the Great War, think on that instead:
Actually he doesn't look particularly dashing, does he?

Apparently Frodo is the British officer class, determined and stiff upper-lipped until almost the end, but Samwise is Tommy Atkins esq., without whom Frodo would have failed.

I read that somewhere once. It was very interesting article.
