I used to use testor dul coat till I no longer get my hands on it, but a few years back I read about thinning down acrylic matt varnish around 50% varnish to 50% water and spraying on using a air brush.
I gloss my figures with Vallejo gloss varnish, then use Vallejo matt as describe above , on using a airbrush you want it coming out as a very fine spray if it’s any heavier then you get a shine on it, if you get it right then you see the gloss disappear in front of you as you use it.
Also you can do the same with Vallejo Model Air matt varnish but I use there air Diluyente Thinner Diluant with that , with the water version its trial and error getting the mixture right but I find it easer with the matt air, that may just down to me.

Certainly works but I aint got an airbrush :'(

Yeah works for you, I tried vallejo acrylic matt with a brush but found it came out satin, much like citadel matt. The best acrylic matt I found was revell aqua color. I always use enamel matt for metal and resin figures.... acrylic for varnishing repainted pre-painted plastics. ( oil based varnish goes sticky when used on some soft plastic).
What kind of airbrush and compressor do you use?

Air brush I use is a Harder & Steenbeck, Infinity with a 0.2mm needle for fine detail and a Sim air XL 2000 with a 0.4mm needle for bulk spraying, I bought the Sim air cheap as the two glass jars was cracked , but it all so has a side cup and this model has the same inter changeable needle nozzle set up with Harder & Steenbeck Infinity, as far as the jars I got lucky I found some old bottles in the back shed same size thread and slightly larger, crack bottles 15cc new bottles 22cc
The Infinity is over the top for what I use it for, I have learned the hard way, some times its best buying quality then cheap.
You can buy Harder & Steenbeck Evolution - Two in One for £120 with a 0.2-0.4 needle set up.
The compressor is from http://www.everythingairbrush.com/acatalog/AS_Series.html and model is an AB-AS189 Mini Piston type "0n-demand" compressor with receiver and Dual Switch - For Airbrushing Ref: AB-AS-189 Cost £95 and are quit.
My last compressor run like a car with no exhaust, wife was not happy, but I took the 6 ltr tank of and connected it to the new compressor, so I would have a larger volume of air to work with before it would restart.

And that's just for a paltry 85 gr can. I got three his last weekend and will now not be able to kids.

They can go out and raid the dustbins for food or clothes if they need to. Don't worry about them, a matt finish is far more important lol
