Title: John Carter of Mars
Post by: Michi on February 13, 2010, 12:09:34 PM
A novel character by Edgar Rice Burroughs: John Carter, an American Civil War veteran captain who went to Mars in 1866, where people only clad in jewelry... (just to silence any rumours that I only paint naked women)

Too right, thats not pleasant on the eye. ( The painting is superb by the way, its just the subject matter and the angle of the photos. Its a bit in your face) lol

Sweet!  I loves me some John Carter.  A great paintjob too  8)

I think that the angle of the photos is absolutely hilariously perfect :)  One of the more endearing parts of John Carters character was that he spent so much time starkers: shy he definitely was not.  He had no problem with nakedness, but he did have trouble talking to women :D

The Disney/Pixar movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0401729/) is in production, I cant wait!

I have a few of the Bronze Age range of not-Barsoom figures, but they all took a more modest approach to the characters: loincloths.  Plenty of topless women, but they didnt expose buyers to any waist down nakedness.

I wouldnt mind getting a balls-to-windward figure of John Carter.  Where does your figure come from?

One last minor thing: I always thought that John Carter was dark haired, not blonde.

Itīs a miniature from Tinman I got from an American in exchange for some painting. His haircolour is artistic license by me. I already have so many dark haired figures and my wife likes the Irish/Shottish orangeheads.

He didnīt come alone:

I dont blame her.  My wife is an Irish "orangehead" :)

I must do some research re Tinman figures then, thanks.

God bless the low gravity on Mars, thats all Ill say...

I hate to point this out, since the flesh tones are so well done, but ... no pubic hair!  It's a long time since I read the books, so I can't remember: does John Carter shave or wax?  ;)

Lovely paintwork - your flesh tones are superb, even if I'm not sure I like the figures themselves all that much  :)

Nice job, Michi. It's good to see a painted example of the Tinman Barsoomians.

You could always say that it's Ulysses Paxton and a couple of Lady Therns... ;)

For the squeamish, these figures do come in a semi-clothed variant as well.

I wouldn't say I'm squeamish, but I'm not sure Mrs Maximus would approve of all that rudeness :(

Why do the female characters have navels?

Why do the female characters have navels?

Because female navels are cute? ;)

I didnt think that the ERB books specified that the Martians did not have navels because they were born from eggs, but I could be wrong.  I figure that there is a placenta of sorts (like a chicken egg yolk or something) in the eggs.  Presumably the Martians connect to that during development.

As they are a species that can succesfully interbreed with homo sapiens, I am ok with cutting the sculptor some slack in the navel department ;)

I guess. It is easier to cut the sculpter some slack, then it is to fill the navel in with milliput, or to fill in the old heritage navels.

Egg-layers don't nurse their young, so Martian women shouldn't have breasts either, but no one complains about that...! ;)

Very nice, although your usual photographed-against-the-sky effect is somewhat alarming in this case. :)

Nice paint job. Anyone ever post up some comparison shots with Tinman and other pulp models, Artizan, etc.. to show how they scale up?

Good call.  I would like to see them alongside some Bronze Age not-Barsoom stuff in particular if anyone can manage it.

Who's missed anything? :) I been ogling these miniatures for a while, thinking I should enter one of them in LPL4. But now Michi's squashed those ambitions with his excellent painting skills.

I am glad you remembered that quote as I was only thinking the same thing when I saw this on saturday. (It would never do to repeat ones own quotations) lol :D

Hey, just one more time is there any chance of getting some scale comparison photos, being unsure of scale is really the only thing holding me back from ordering these. And on that note who has the best 28mm John Carter?

Thanks for posting the comparison. I'm going to be ordering mine here in a few days, so thanks for the post.
One thing I've always had in the back of my mind is the size comparisons themselves. Often I have miniatures of true 25's interspersed with heroic 28's. I get some questions about mixing the two, but I see it as this: WE are not all the same size, so why should my miniatures be?
Just sayin'.....

Born from eggs but suckled and raised in the traditional fashion is the only way to explain all those beautiful "well endowed"..... book covers.

Great figures, nice sculpts and an awesome paint job.  I just ordered some based on this thread.

-BUT-

Showin' just a little too much Grundle.  Coulda done without that.   Luckily the ones on the site have something on.  To quote "Den" from the movie "Heavy Metal":

"There was no way I was gonna go around with my Dork hangin' out."

Somehow I think a Captain from Virginia circa the 1800s would say somethin' along those lines too.

The angle of the pics reminds me of 80's Heavy Metal clps...

The lack of hairiness/shaveing aspect has been mentioned but I'd also like to bring to light the lack of safety razors at thet time. Applying a straight razor to that region...... :-X

Excellent stuff!  Can't believe I missed this last year.  Did someone mention Heavy Metal?  I guess now would be a good time to bang your head to Battleroar's Warlord of Mars!
