Title: Oliver Cromwell
Post by: Gluteus Maximus on February 13, 2010, 04:06:11 PM
New from Warlord Games:

Looks pretty good to me. For all his faults, I'm a bit of a fan due to his military prowess.

Apologies if this has appeared on another board  :)

Looks like they've taken "warts and all" seriously.

I don't want to upset the faint-hearted with my appalling miniature painting  :(

Warlord seem to fall into the "love 'em or hate 'em" category of figures. I love 'em cause they are compatible with the Perry and Foundry stuff  :)

Not entirely convinced about his military prowess, but like some modern politicians he was good at manipulating the press. You can't fault his spin doctoring.

Black Tom Fairfax or Honest John Lambert would be my preference.

Shame Hampden died too early to judge - I bet he would have been good on PR too.

Well, if nothing else he gave Parliament a reliable cavalry force which helped nullify the threat posed by Rupert's boys and then gave the foot a chance to win the battles. I agree about Black Tom though, he's definitely my favourite ECW commander. Just pips Montrose  ;)

If you watch "To Kill A King" Fairfax is more popular, but he didn't do politics.  A much fairer film that the awful "Cromwell", a prime example of historical movies at their worst.

I loved it as a nipper. I saw it at around the same time as Zulu, Charge Of The Light Brigade etc and they were all huge factors in propelling me into wargaming.

You are right, though. I watched it again a couple of years ago and it really is bad :(

I will try and get a copy of "To Kill A King". I think that's why Fairfax's reputation is less tarnished than Olly's He did the fighting and when that was over was happy to blend into the background.

Same, I loved those old war films from the 60s and 70s, everything from Peking to Zulu and the Light Brigade, loads of Empirey films. But.......... as you read the facts they really suck, Cromwell was probably the worst, especially the Edgehill section.  We need more war films from the past, Iraq and WWII have been overdone lately.

Never! Montrose is THE ECW general, bah humbug to the rest.Brave last words as well and a man who believed enough to change sides despite political pressure and loss of his lands.

As he said "God have mercy on this afflicted land!"
