Title: 0e gauge vs. 0n30 gauge (both for H0/00 tracks)

My latest purchase: Fleischmann 0e gauge Reichsbahn train (out of production, but common on ebay)

The actual thing is Austrian 760mm narrow gauge, but similar trains ran on Saxon 750mm gauge too.
The Steyr is 1/48 scale and shown for size, as is the 28mm Reaper mini.

The van has sliding doors and a removable roof (the engine´s roof is removable as well):

Comparison shots of 0n30 gauge US train and 0e German train (both run on H0/00 gauge tracks):

The planked walls (and brake man cabs) of the open cars can be removed to turn them into flatcars, what makes them very useful for military loads.

They go well together in scale, but would have never been coupled in history...

Hi Michi,

That's a nice purchase and it works well with your excellent vehicle. Thanks for putting the comparison shots in as well. The Oe loco always looked a bit 1:35th scale to me, but your photo proves otherwise.

Looking forward to seeing the end product ;)

Looks great.
Just out of interest, what was your search that came up with that result ?

I do not exactly understand the question.
I was on no searching mission. I was aware of the existence of the model trains in 0e gauge for years and have now decided to buy some for interwar and weird world war 2 settings in Germany, because the Americans trains I had would look out of place there and I find 0 standard gauge too big for use with 28mm figures. former user does not, I know, but I do. It just looks odd to me. The smaller narrow gauge trains look more right to me...

If you just wanted to know how to find stuff like that, you should have known gauge, manufacturer or brand name (0e model trains, Fleischmann, Magic Train) and browse Ebay Germany for it.

If you're searching on eBay, search for "Magic Train" - that was the name of the Fleischmann Oe scale product line.

Oe scale are 1:45, and on HO track comes out to about 750mm ("narrow") gauge (about 2 1/2 feet).

I have the loco pictured above, and have been considering making a card "shell" that would fit down over the locomotive - instant RCW armored loco. Then I'd make armored bodies for a couple of flat cars for the gun carriages.

My hangup, for RCW, is that Russian railways are "broad gauge" - or 1524mm vs standard gauge at 1435mm. So HO track is already too narrow in 1/87 scale - all that technical stuff aside, I think HO track just looks too narrow next to a 28mm figure.

I agree, if you talk about H0 for a standard gauge. If you consider it as narrow gauge I find it fits quite well:

I find it matches scales for gaming. This is what I have painted now:

awesome, as usual

I'm never going to catch up on You....
please explain
what is the difference between On30 and 0e actually?
never understood in spite of researching a lot...
must have been expensive the lot

0n30 is American 3ft gauge in 1/48 scale
0e is European 750/760mm gauge in 1/45 scale

OK
so both are running on HO track then?
and are thought to represent narrow gauge?

Michi, those are some beautifully weathered locos and rolling stock, well done!

Since I was thinking of using mine for a Russian Armored Train, that is why I thought the track would look a bit narrow. But for use with WW2 Germans, I agree it is much more appropriate. And I love German narrow gauge (Schmalspurbahn  :-*). I may try to convert mine anyway though.

Sorry for the resurrection....

I have just been picking up some On30, backwoods and Fleischman stuff for gaming and trawling through posts.

Broad gauge as in Russia and America works out to be 31.75mm in 1/48 pretty close to O gauge track at 32mm, it is 27mm in 1/55 which is almost half way between S and O

O-27 an american gauge is supposed to be 1/64 on O gauge track - broad gauge

If people are doing Africa or Australian post apoc 1m or 3'6" are standard gauge in those locations... so HO does really well in the looks stakes.

Right back to cutting down the cabs on the toy trains to make them look better to my eye. I found drawings of similar locomotives and photocopied them to the right scale (that I want) so will be chopping the cabs down to suit.
