Title: VICTORIAN BUILDING WIP (now buildings)
Post by: odd duck on March 08, 2010, 03:47:39 AM
Well I did it again, started another project instead of finishing the ones I've  already got on the go! I've been trying to resist this for a while ,but there is something about the overly decorated buildings of the period that I found appealling and i gave in to an impulse
(http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll29/madmalg/victorian%20buildings/IMG_0537.jpg)
I used dollar store craft boxes but the decoration techniques could just as easily be used on a foamcore or corktile model most of the materials are pretty cheap ,Bamboo skewers, wooden coffee stirrers, and chinese toothpicks, the round window tops are made from plastic needle point discs and the fluted pillars are made from woodworking dowels, an idea I've wanted to try since I put together my first IKEA bookcase

the balastrade at the top was made from the toothpicks i mentioned you can find bamboo skewers with the same endented ends but the toothpicks have better detail the roof is by Will's

the ornamental railings are made from a wire mesh that comes in some of the wooden craft boxes that i use for most of my projects lately. The building is based on a photo of Oxford st.in 1910

I'm going to look forward to seeing this one progress!

Not many people brave enough to tackle highly-decorated buildings, hopefully some (myself included) will get inspired.

This is really beautiful work I am really looking forward to seeing some more. I hope you plan to show more of your progress. I think I am goinng to have to use some of your ideas though.

WL Ithink the large amount of details makes it easier to get the look right. I was a little sloppy on some of the detail work, because I was working without a set plan just a photo and some ideas, but because there is a fair amount of detail minor mistakes are'nt so glaring. HF. i hope to post more soon but I'll be at Salute in Burnaby next weekend so it might be a while

Lovely building :-*
It is a style of building I have always wanted to try and build but the level of detail has always put me off.
Looking forward to seeing it finished and painted.
What are the two hole in the middle for?

The building is made from wooden craft boxes with the lids removed ,The holes are from the screws that held the lid latch they'll be filled before painting

Absolutely. I love the way that you've used what look like sections of the circular 'granny grating' meshes to make the decorations in the arched windows, that's inspired. It definitely deserves a  :o and maybe a  :-* too... I've never used that emoticon before, I've never quite felt anything deserved it. But that really is a great idea.

OK got a bit more done would have posted earlier but had to get new batteries for the camera
(http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll29/madmalg/victorian%20buildings/IMG_0639.jpg)
got some paint on the front was'nt happy with this at first but it grew on me
(http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll29/madmalg/victorian%20buildings/IMG_0636.jpg)
the second building was actually started first the detailing on the ground floor turned out well enough that I got a little more ambitious and started the second one, the top was added after a few experiments for the gable window in the second building
(http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll29/madmalg/victorian%20buildings/IMG_0637.jpg)
I decided on a simpler design for the gable window, still have some work to do on it
(http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll29/madmalg/victorian%20buildings/IMG_0640.jpg)
and some work on the ground floor though I am happy with how the doors are turning out so far
(http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll29/madmalg/victorian%20buildings/IMG_0638.jpg)
I also have a lot of work to do on the back
(http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll29/madmalg/victorian%20buildings/IMG_0641.jpg)
heck of alot of bricks on the buildings of this period!!Oh and I've started work on a corner pub and hope to have some picture of it soon

Ok it took me a while to get back to this. sorry! made some progress got some paint on the second building
(http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll29/madmalg/victorian%20buildings/IMG_0642.jpg)
I looked through my bits boxes for somethings to decorate the top and side pillars have'nt found anything yet but did find this button to use for the center of the false front
(http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll29/madmalg/victorian%20buildings/IMG_0643.jpg)
and here is the start of the ground floor of the corner Pub
(http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll29/madmalg/victorian%20buildings/IMG_0644.jpg)
It's going to be in two parts the upper stories lifting off to give access to the Pub interior,Because having a Pub and not being able to get into it is just wrong!
the walls are a little off true as i designed it as I was building it and used a no# of small bits instead of one base piece for each wall
(http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll29/madmalg/victorian%20buildings/IMG_0646.jpg)
the upper levels are foam core wit thin balsa glued on and brickwork scribed in with a pencil
(http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll29/madmalg/victorian%20buildings/IMG_0649.jpg)
managed to do this with very little warping easy on the glue and only small sections at a time the front is going to have a gable on each streetside and a corner turret
(http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll29/madmalg/victorian%20buildings/IMG_0647.jpg)
I'm still working out the final details of the front on paper, doing a lot of google image searchs for research,i was hoping to do some personal reseach in London this weekend and attend salute but the volcano scuppered that!

Oh my, these are very nice.  Interesting touch with the young lady taking out the gentilman and the thug with her revolver, don't mess with suffragettes!
