Title: Atlantis - US Forces Rescue Captives (picture heavy)
Post by: Bullshott on March 22, 2010, 01:16:41 AM
Opening deployment: Just before dawn the US forces deploy around the Koshindan camp. Top left & centre: Atlantean scouts & US Marines. Centre-left: US Marines with leviathan gun. Lower Right: US Navy & Marine landing gun. Off table (left): Impervious suit. Off table (riight): aeronef.

Marine Private 'Short Fuse' Coburn rushes up to the prison wall to set his bomb.

Having got lost in the dark, Chief McQueen's sailors found themselves arriving closer than expected to the camp, allowing them to rush the nearest guard unobserved, then swiftly kill the occupants of the nearest tent in the following turn.

To their horror, as the alarm is raised inside the camp, the native scouts find themselves deployed next to the Koshindan automatons.

Awoken by gunfire, the mercenary crew of the steam car stumble from their tent, only to meet an incoming shell from the US landing gun.

While the sailors move on to kill the guards emerging from the next tent.

Across the camp, the activated automatons charged the natives. Despite the arrival of the US Iron Man suit, by the time the impervious suit had despatched two automatons and the other three had failed their SUSTAIN rolls, only four scouts survived the onslaught. Fortunately, 2nd Lieutenant Abner Ravenwood (attached to the scouts as liaison officer) walked away unscathed.

Then disaster struck. Before he could light the fuse on the charge attached to the prison wall, Private Coburn was cut down in the heavy crossfire between the marines and the Koshindan guards.

An improvement in US fortune was heralded by the arrival of the aeronef USAB Rio Grande, which proceeded to bombard the Koshindan armour in subsequent turns. Although its long range fire failed to damage any of the vehicles, its machinegun killed some of the mercenary riflemen in the armoured wagon.

The surviving marines from Coburn's detachment detoated the charge against the prison wall.

Allowing the captives to climb out to freedom as the dust settled.

The Koshindan walker brought its machinegun to bear on the nearest marines, but Private DeNiro's leviathan gun penetrated its hull, damaging the machinegun and thus removing a major threat.

As the marines escorted the freed captives out of camp they came under fire, causing the loss of two marines and a captive.

But the remaining captives were escorted to the safety of the woods, where they could make their way to a clearing and evacuation by aeronef. As they disappeared int the woods, Allan Quartermain turned and doffed his hat to his former captives.

Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable Sunday afternoon, made all the better by the undisputed victory for the Americans. Thanks to Dr De'Ath for providing the opposition. Somehow I don't think this is the last we will have heard of the Koshindans  ;)

Superb stuff. ;D
And I am delighted to hear Allan Quatermain has been found alive despite the rumours of his death in the battle of Pyramid Island.
Now I am sure he will want to stay with his American rescuers for a while and indulge in some big game hunting in the mountains. I feel a game coming on.... ;)

An unconfirmed report, believed to have originated from the Swiss Embassy in Khosinda, has been made available to the world press;

At last night's opening ceremony of Wherz-Me-Dinna'dad, the Khosindan holy week of feasting and celebration, news broke of an American dawn attack on a Khosindan medical station on Atlantis. The Caliph's reaction to the news that men recovering from their wounds sustained at the Battle of the Pyramid were murdered in their beds as they slept was captured by a reporter from the Geneva Times.

An attack on the first day of the most important Khosindan religious event has been taken as a huge insult by the Caliph, who was seen leaving the ceremony early surrounded by his senior military advisors.

Rumours also suggest that the attack was assisted, if not lead by, the Englishman Allan Quatermain who had previously been reported dead at the Battle of the Pyramid.

Khosindan casualties are feared to be high as a result of the Americans deliberately blowing up a building containing a large number of sleeping patients.

More news will be published as it becomes available.

Great looking game.

And in keeping with the "spirit of the age" the natives take the brunt of the casualties.  lol

Cross-posted from the Atlantis campaign sticky:

US Marines Release Pirate Captives

Quartermain Alive

US forces on Atlantis have announced a major victory over the Koshindan pirates. In a daring dawn raid US Marines, led by Captain Fonda, freed four white captives held by the pirates; including Idaho Smith (son of Senator Smith) and the famous British explorer Allan Quartermain. US casualties were light; comprising eight marines, one sailor and six native Atlantean scouts, although it is with regret that one captive also lost his life (shot in the back by a pirate). By contrast, the Koshindans lost twenty seven men (including five Europeans) and two automatons destroyed.

Lieutenant Colonel Wayne, commanding officer of US forces in Port Harrison, said that the high bodycount and kill ratio was a credit to the US forces involved and praised Captain Fonda for his leadership. He has also recommended Chief Petty Officer McQueen for a special commendation; for leading his naval landing party in deadly hand-to-hand fighting during the initial assault, despatching pirate guards with extreme predjudice.

The tents are ACW 'winter camp' tents from Redoubt. Unfortunately they don't appear to be listed on Redoubt's website. I might have to drop them a mail, as these have so many uses (in particular for the Wierd Wild West mining town I'm planning ....).

Indeed he will Sir, although I suspect he will indulge in a little big game hunting with his new American friends first.

I am not sure whether a certain Mr "Buffalo" Bill Cody accompanies the American expedition? Quatermain knew Cody from his Wild West show tour of London and has accompanied him on several hunting expeditions in the USA. If Cody has tagged along then its highly likely the pair will go off on some jaunt somewhere....

Cody is a part of my expedition. Although I expect he'd requisition a flyer and pop up for some hunting.

In which case such esteemed fellows might well be joined in the hunt by the newly appointed civil governor of the northern US territory on Atlantis and friend of President Harrison, Theodore Roosevelt.  ;)

No dinos in out neck of the woods on Atlantiis, but giant elk on the plains, cave bears & sabretooths in the mountains (plus possibly some new locals with their own flyers & guns) or mammoth further inland on the, as yet unexplored, plains.

I'll have to let you provide the prey models then as I don't have them :)
