After at least 5 years, possibly 7-8, I've finally finished off these empire handgunners that sat partially painted in a box for all those years. Since my painting style and skill evolved since then, these figures ended up somewhat of a hybrid paintjob (old and current). They are in the colour scheme I decided on back in the day, as a nostalgic return to the red, yellow and blue schemes of the early nineties.
The 5 figures:

Couple closer-ups:

Couple from the back:

I think I'll keep painting them for a while, already started work on a Marauder empire ogre and the steve dean forum charity fig.

"Soggy bottom boys"! =) They look good, and it must've been a load off your shoulders getting them done! =D Good job!
-
Great stuff - got a bit of a soft spot for these 90s Empire minis - they were the ones my mostly 3rd ed. Orcs used to massacre each week in the little after school club we had going back in the day - much to my old mate's chagrin!
Apart from volley guns and steam tanks - don't like them... >:(
Love to see the Maruader Ogre - those Empire style fellas were great minis -particularly the one with the large arquebus/cannon!

Here's two I did right before I moved on to another project years ago:

Lovely stuff - no Empire army should be without some hired thuggery like this - love the contrast between the uniforms and the ogres character!
OOh nice PJ too! :D
-
Very cool, I'm a big fan of the perry Empire stuff. It's the stuff I used to paste my brother with when he used my orcs in 3rd then 4th edition. Mind you I pasted him with my orcs when I fgaced him playing empire. Scary thing is these are old school now too!
I'm loving the colours, same as the guild members from the war wagon but done your way. The Ogres look great always wanted those, any of the renaissance dwarfs to go with them?
I have a bunch of these old Perry's including the various knights and the plastic halberdiers painted by my 14-15 year old self and a few I have revisited. Perhaps I should put some on my thread.
-
I have all of the renaissance dwarfs, including the rare and very rare ones (thanks to Svenn for filling some gaps), but they aren't painted yet.
I do have some pictures of the old painted stuff. As you can see, it would need more highlights.
The Knights Panther. They are all metal, some are converted to avoid doubles, the musician has metal legs and a plastic upper body. The foot knight uses bits from the 6th edition footsoldier command sprue and the knights sprue.
The horses all have banners with pseudo-latin rousing phrases on one side and freehand panther heraldry on the other:
The champion for the unite was my most elaborate conversion at the time and used a metal knight with the helmet crest replaced by one from the plastic knights, a banner top added to the horse head and a heroquest orc morningstar for a weapon. I'm still quite fond of it.
The artillery: classic cannon, mortar and hellblaster, all metal (except for the wheels)
Some halberdiers from the Foundry. Musician is a 6th edition plastic drummer (I wanted them all to have matching "dresses").
Some Crossbowmen (DOW):
More halberdiers from the Battlemasters set. The champion is converted from the battlemasters cannon crew. The shields are freehand. I have more but I'll be concentrating on much more interesting figures before I complete this unit of clones.
Some characters: Two DSA female figures. The foot model had her lantern replaced by a swordhand from the 6th editionsoldier sprue.
The champion of the handgunners I just finished. Guess I should touch him up a little too now:
-
Excellent stuff - what I said about volleyguns still stands though... >:( ;)
Love those Knights Panther - always wanted some of these ever since I laid eyes on that beautiful John Blanche painting in the WFB 3rd ed rule book! :-* Renaissance dwarf pikemen are on the wish list too...
Very neat freehand and scrolls -most impressive!
-
Stunning.
Thantsants, that is one of my favourite Blanche pieces. Funny how people say he's a sh*t painter, but forget about the good stuff like that. Unbelievable!
White Knight, perhaps you could use the new Artizan 'Greatswords' in this army? :D
-
White Knight, perhaps you could use the new Artizan 'Greatswords' in this army? :D
I'm already planning an order for all the artizan landsknecht packs (and I have the complete foundry range too). :D
-
It was waiting for me when I got home on Friday, the Steve Dean forum charity figure sculpted by Paul Hicks, commissioned by Regulator and I couldn't wait:
(he still needs to be based, but won't get a chance to finish that before another week or maybe two. :( )
-
Just finished (minus the base): another classic marauder ogre with greatsword (love this guy):
-
Another WK's project that I like :)
-
That is a great mini - stockings are a bit Nora Batty though?! ;) :D
What kind of bird did he get that feather from... :o
-
What kind of bird did he get that feather from... :o
A bloody big one lol
Love the old Empire figures. I've got quite a few metal ones now and all these threads with people doing them again has gotten me bitten by the bug :D
cheers
James

I've had some time to paint, so next up are two dwarves and another ogre. All classic marauder minis.
The dwarves:

The ogre:

Meanwhile, I also based the last two:

-
Imressive stuff - you have a really clean and neat painting style
-
A line-up of the 4 painted ogres (so far). I did a few minor touch-ups to the leader to bring him closer to my current painting standard.
-
Very nice work WK. 8)
-
Great stuff WK, especially love the Ogres.
-
4 more marauder empire-themed dwarfs. Not as happy with these as with the other ones (yellow highlighs too harsh for one), but they'll do fine.
With the previous two:

-
Looking pretty neat - wish my yellows were so clean - do they use Daz colourfast? ;)
Cracking minis too - love the pipe smoker!
-
Until recently, I also struggled with yellow. The trick to get a bright clean yellow is to paint it first with a colour that will cover anything that would bleed through (including black) and that adds to the vibrance of the yellow. I use coat d'arms bilious brown (which is an orange-ochre type light brown). It also serves as shading in the folds. :)
-
Love the beard on the guy with the yellow cap! Think they all turned out great. Looking forward to see a few spear men soon. =)
-
Yep, very nice. They'll make a nice unit. Do you game with them at all?
-
I hope to get a chance at gaming with them someday. lol
But not enough painted yet and I doubt I'll get enough done before the next Eurobash organised by the warhammer empire forum.
-
No local club or no time? I happen to be the chairman of a large vibrant club located conveniently in just the next town. There is also a club in the town I presently live in. Do I get a regular game? Nope, long hours and 20 month old son put paid to that! Occasional quick skirmish game if my brother pops over is all.
Hope you get to field them soon, collecting and painting is all well and good but they were cast to do battle.
-
No club, not much time. :)
But yes, I do hope to be able to field them.
-
4 more empire-themed dwarfs. The one with the eyepatch and pegleg is actually an old citadel Bugman's rangers champion, but he had the right look, so he joined this unit. The two in the middle came with seaprate plug-in hands (I also have handguns and spears for these guys). The one with the helmet and breastplate is a conversion of one of the speardwarves (not an original, but a recast) with a plastic crossbow.
With the previous lot:

-
Really really nice WK, but I have to ask, some miniatures are DSA, whats DSA?
-
DSA = Die Schwartze Auge, a german roleplay setting which also had a fantasy miniature line (complemented by the Armalion line). They are now available through Ral Partha Europe.
-
Got time to finish 4 more marauder dwarf crossbowmen. The one to the left is a conversion of the chainmail one (comparison pictures below). The two in the middle are conversions of dwarf spearmen (some recasts I got off ebay, not originals) with plastic crossbows. The one to the right is the third variant of the the ones with separate plug-in hands
(http://wk.frothersunite.com/misc/empire/dwxb005.jpg)
The conversion next to the original. He got greenstuff shoes, puffy sleeves and a feather with gem broche for his hat, as well as a new moustache to set him apart from the original. I'm quite happy with this one, he looks different enough from the original and of the two I think I like my converted one best.
With the previous lot:

Individual shots.

-
Great stuff and nice conversion - I'm assuming you cut off the pike where it meets the shoulder or is there a clever technique for removing parts that are more integral in the mini?
All in all a great looking little unit - faves are still the smoker and the drinker!
-
Actually, since these were recasts ( >:( ), the metal was rather soft, so I could cut straight down between the pikeshaft and the arm with a little pressure. :)
-
Aha - so they have their uses! :)
-
You might be able to do the same with the originals as the metal back then wasn't as hard as the current white metal. The way I cut mine was a horizontal cut just above the fingers and then a vertical cut down between the shaft and the arm.
The only problem I see with each figure having so much individual character is resisting temptation to field the unit in a single long row so they are all in the front. lol
-
2 more. One more conversion of a speardwarf recast and one musician. Pictures are bad. :(
(http://wk.frothersunite.com/misc/empire/dwxb16.jpg)
Beginning to look like something that resembles a proper unit:
-
Great looking unit. I like the old metal dwarfs, they have so much character.
Nice way to finish the bases.
DJ
-
Fantastic! I'm curious as to how you've done your bases, they look really good.
-
These are all superb. :-* I'm really jealous of how quickly you can turn stuff out when you set your mind to it.
-
Fantastic! I'm curious as to how you've done your bases, they look really good.
I did the bases in the old school style, with a personal twist. They are just painted in pva glue, dipped in sand, left to dry, painted with a watered down goblin green and then drybrushed (rotten flesh I think). Then the sides are painted chestnut brown. Instead of limiting the sand to the top of the base, I went over the borders in random places (and occasionally leave a bare patch on the actual base surface too). It makes it a bit more interesting visually and also gets away from the boxy nature of the slotta bases and helps them blend into the table more (at least that was the idea). I came up with this years ago when I wanted to do something more interesting than the all green bases that were still predominant with GW back then and didn't have any fancy stuff like static grass to play with.
These are all superb. :-* I'm really jealous of how quickly you can turn stuff out when you set your mind to it.
It helps to be sick at home with nothing else to do. ;)
Unfortuanately, now I'm back to being sick at work. :'(
-
Thanks, it just looks a much nicer texture than I usually get with sand, but now looking at them again, I guess you're using a finer sand than I do. Still really nice looking bases.
-
Two more figures. I wanted to paint something else than dwarves, so I picked a GW halfling and a Foundry orc. The orc is one of the smaller "mercenary war orcs" and not one of the bigger "mercenary great orcs/ogres". I deliberately used no goblin green on the orc skin so it wouldn't look too similar to the base, but in the pictures it still does. Oh well, you'll just have to take my word for it that there is more contrast between the two in real life.
-
I like that orc a lot and you did a very fine job on it mate!
-
The foundry landsknecht orcs are great, but they have a lot of bling on them, which doesn't speed up the painting time.
-
Just a bit of fun:
And they call it the Empire of Men !!!
-
OK so any other Landsknecht races out there? A very nice army forming now, do you intend to use orcs in it?
-
I have some elves and a few goblins too. The former will be Sea Elves (one of the WFRP supplements shows a picture of them dressed in empire fashion).
I have plenty more landsknecht orcs, so I will try to build some units and detachments from them. :)
-
Would they be the foundry elves? I'd forgotten about them.
-
Yes, the Foundry ones and some Grenadier/Mirliton ones sculpted by Copplestone. :)
-
Haha - civilised orcs! Whatever next...
Maybe I'll try putting a tribe of savage halflings together! ;D
Great paint jobs as ever! :D
-
I think the orcs would have made more sense with more ragged clothing, like the ogres, but what are you gonna do... ;)
-
Haha - civilised orcs! Whatever next...
Maybe I'll try putting a tribe of savage halflings together! ;D
Great paint jobs as ever! :D
Savage Halflings? The halflings in Flintloque are Zulu! The Halflings in Panzerfauste are Ghurkhas!!!
These look excellent, really, really good! :)
-
The halflings in Flintloque are Zulu!
Sounds reminiscent of the old citadel pygmies! ;D
-
Yeah, something like that!
I'm planning a real Orc's Drift with Flintloque Orcs and Kallistra Pygmies. :D
-
I'm planning a real Orc's Drift with Flintloque Orcs and Kallistra Pygmies. :D
You absolutely HAD to remind me of Kallistras wonderful pygmies, had you... aaaargghh.
Been back in gaming for about one month after a long break, and now already my head is swirling with possible projects..... o_o
-
hehe! ;D
-
Two more Marauder dwarves: one with a halberd/polearm and another quarreler. The latter got a greenstuff feather and some puff and slash added to make it a bit more interesting/empirey

The individual shots with some additional angles:

Love these, thanks for sharing. Really brilliant.

Two more.

With the rest:

-
Really like the fella on the left!
So if you're gaming with these orcs will they be conscripts of the empire or an orc tribe that's developed airs and graces from living too near the empire?
-
I'm thinking they will be Dogs of War, hired in times of need, who have adopted some customs from the humans they work for/with. :)
-
Nice idea - bet they're cheaper than Tileans!
Two barrels of beer and all the enemy you can eat? Its a deal!
-
And the occasional bonus for a job well done. You don't really think I keep those halflings around for their fighting skills, do you? lol
-
The Orcs are excellent.
-
4 more additions: 2 foundry orcs, 1 foundry goblin and 1 (converted) classic marauder/citadel dwarf.
The individual shots with some additional angles.
The Gobbo With No Name:
Another Dwarf for the crossbow unit. This one had the yellow vest and the blue puffy sleeves added with greenstuff.
Two more Foundry orcs for the orc spearmen unit (technically, these two are more halberds, but I'm using them as spears)
-
Another excellent set of miniatures to add to the force.
-
You have got this greenstuff thing sorted good and proper - looks seemless.
-
The greenskins so far:
-
Where is the gobbowith no name from and how do I get one? :D
-
Tremendous fun! ;D
The goblin is bonkers... ;D
-
The goblin is from the foundry. the problem is, it's in a box with some great orcs (I think it's the desperado set), so you can't buy it on itself.
-
Oh that's alright, I want them all too someday. lol
-
Nice work - love the gobbo - The Good, the bad and the ugly rolled into one!
You could work up some fun rules for using them as a mercenary force within a human army - something along the lines of the Warhammer rules for animosity amongst orc and goblin units but in this case between your landsnecht orcs and the Empire troops who are maybe feeling a little dubious as to where their loyalties lie and are perhaps not so keen about forming up next to them in the battle line...
-
That's an interesting line of thought. I'm sure the halflings would feel a little squeamish near them too. And I can see a unit of dwarves breaking ranks to go head on with the orcs after being called "stunties" by them. lol
Someone on another forum said the gobbo looked like George W. Bush... and it does... lol
-

Well, he was a bit of a cowboy!!! lol
Yeah, sounds like a good idea though. Or if you are into games which are run by a GM, with several players (one per 'team'), you could have the orc player being VERY obedient, but confuse the human players into thinking that the orcs are not to be trusted at all! Could lead up for a very interesting game!
I love playing with gamers in a game like that, telling them all different things and turning the game into a massive gossiping match!
*'Well he did this and I wanted to do that but I was too busy trying to bash them buggers over the head'! *
Best example of this I have seen is an old Flintloque scenario called 'the missed bridge' in which one of the Ogres had to find a pet dwarf on the table! The only dwarves on the table were from his own side and assumed that the ogre was coming over to help them (i.e. their objective was to wait for ogre assistance against the oncoming undead!!!)
-
They look really cool, WK! As previously mentioned, the green stuff work on the dwarfs is blending in very well!
-
I've got three more crossbow dwarves greenstuffed up and about ready for painting. Looks like it's going to be a big unit.
-
Someone on another forum said the gobbo looked like George W. Bush... and it does...
Nah you haven't quite captured that glazed, gormless look in his eyes!
I love playing with gamers in a game like that, telling them all different things and turning the game into a massive gossiping match!
Sorry to bang on about Orcs Drift in your thread but there was a good example of this in the scenario set in Orcs Drift itself. The person playing the Elf contingent had to pretend to be a little deaf and ask his dwarf allie to repeat everything at least twice. The dwarf player on the other hand, in keeping with the dwarf's mistrust of the elves, was instructed to ignore him! lol
-
Hahahaha that sounds like such a good idea!!!! 3D roleplaying, for sure! lol
-
3 more dwarves. One marauder one and 2 citadel ones.
A major conversion on one of the classic citadel drunken dwarves. He was dressed in medieval HYW style clothes, so I sculpted on the puffy sleeves and the yellow overcoat and resculpted the belt (minus the buckle which is the original one).
A minor conversion on this one: the addition of the red tied ribbon on his shoulder and the sleeve on the other arm was made a bit wider, so he fits in a bit better with the empire theme (the shoes were perfect already):
The Dwarf With No Name. A really old, preslotta GW figure. TBH, it was not very enjoyable to paint, rather rough sculpting. But it's a classic. He'll fit in fine as a militia/bountyhunter/witchhunter type.
A group shot of the crossbow regiment so far (still a couple more figures to add to it):
-
Very nice - and the regiment looks great!
The guy leaning on his axe is one of my favourites amongst the marauder dwarfs. Longing to paint up my own soon... 7 minis between me and treat painting! =)
-
Your conversions are inspiring!
I might have to look at my dwarf collection again and reconsider how to do them. Most of them are marauder, but I would love for more of them to fit in. :)
-
I recognize one of those fellows - nice tailoring on the sleeves!
The drunken dwarf is great too and you've done a superb job with Clint's little brother! 8)
-
The drunken dwarf is great too and you've done a superb job with Clint's little brother! 8)
I had to do him as a blonde as in 'The good, the bad and the ugly', people call him "Blondie". :)
-
There are two kinds of people in the world, my friend. Those who have short legs and a good aim and those who look like George Bush...
HEY BLONDIE! YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE?! JUST A DIRTY SON OF A B...
I can see some great shoot outs between Blondie and the liitle Green Gringo! lol
-
All that talk about WFB civilians prompted me to finish off this conversion of the Hasslefree minstrel into an Empire ministrel:
What do you think?
-
Good work! I need one of those for my busker in Orc's Drift! :D
-
All that talk about WFB civilians prompted me to finish off this conversion of the Hasslefree minstrel into an Empire ministrel:
What do you think?
Great job!
I think that EVERY scenario/game MUST have a minstrel! (I currently use the old Minstrel from the Groo miniatures set!)
-
Very clean and nice, WK! Have you ever sculpted minis from scratch?
-
A few times. My very first complete sculpt from scratch was a kislevite dwarf hornblower, probably 8 or more years ago now. Then there was a Rogue trader for a 28mm inquisition game that was almost a complete sculpt (I sculpted over a plastic elf head). Then my 28mm (non-zombie) tintin and snowy for pulp and a seated tintin and haddock for the red jeep (reminds me I never finished the twins (both walking and seated). But I haven't done any full sculpts recently.
-
2 more Marauder dwarves (unconverted). Handgunners this time. The first one is one of the MM15 set. The next few updates will include more imperial dwarf handgunners.
-
I converted a standardbearer for my metal handgunners. It was also my first attempt at a freehand banner. It's nowhere as good as I want it to be, but it'll have to do.
The standardbearer was converted from this artillery crew figure, by adding a greenstuff beard and feather and making a standard from wire and a plastic standard top.
-
This is some gorgeous stuff, WK. Downright Peachy.
-
I'm happy with how the striped trousers came out on the first dwarf. That had me worried before starting. :)
-
Those are some wonderful stripes, very inspiring. :)
-
The stripes are my favorite part!
-
The stripes are amazing - the standard is non too shabby either - beautiful work as always! 8)

This group is great! I love the details on these models, and they are well painted.
I like the guy with the oversized scope, but the cigar smoking dwarf mini is still my favorite- has a Fist Full of Dollars feel.
-
Lovely stuff as always!
-
Over sized scope guy is my favourite too. Not keen at all on the hat-waver. Looks like a bearded halfling. Not that I'd dare say that to his face. =)

3 more Marauder dwarfs with handguns. The one with the pipe is one of those models that didn't look very exciting until it started coming to life under the brush.

Watch and wheep that it fell in my hands (and under my mediocre paintbrush) instead of coming to you where it would have found a paintjob worthy of it's rarity. Alas, 't is what it is, and here is my take on the unreleased marauder dwarf general:

-
Nice to see one with a bit of paint on it for a change.
-
Smashing job on a pretty unique model. Not every dwarf army has one. =)
If I should offer any feedback, it's the fact that you did the mane and fur the same colour and tone on the pony. No big deal, it happens in nature - but would've been nicer with a contrast.
Like the base too, nice touch with the shield sticking up!
-
You are right about the mane and tail. I considered using different colours, but somehow whenever I think about one of those ponies, they look (more or less) like this.
As for the base, since this is but a small pony, it looked a bit empty without some extra "filler". :)
-
Nice to see one with a bit of paint on it for a change.
Well I figured it would be silly to let it hidden in one of the boxes of unpainted lead and paint "lesser" models first. ;)
-
Now I have to get one of these for my Dwarves as well. Curse you and your unique mini! Curse you! >:(
-
Wow, I've been cursed on three different forums in about an hour time. Hope this doesn't lead to bad things... :o
-
Wow, that mounted drawf is fantastic, unreleased model or not - who cares it looks greta and firs the army perfectly (nice work on it!)
Duncan

Very nice - never even seen this mini before!
Is he going to get a nice big pennant to flutter from the top of his lance? :D
-
That's areally well painted General IMHO 8)
-
Is he going to get a nice big pennant to flutter from the top of his lance? :D
I've been thinking about it, not sure yet. Also hesitating about whether to add a shield. I think for now I'll just leave him in his natural state. :)
-
Wonderful miniature. I wish I had one, I'd use it as a dwarf on shieldbearers!!!
Lovely paintjob too, I think it's good you painted it. It's an insult to the sculptor not to paint it, that's what they're for after all.
-

That's a good idea, actually, if I want to play them as a dwarf army instead of an Empire army. 8)

Well very nice indeed. Though, I would have done the armour filligrie bits in gold and the mane and tail contrasting:
But then its your BBQ and the plate looks good! ;)
-
All fair points.
Well, if I ever do feel like getting back to it, an additional lighter higlight to the mane and tail might create the necessary contrast.

Also just showed the Mrs the sculpt and she reckons with that curly coat that the pony's got cushing's disease anyhoo! :D

Better put it down then. :(

This is the champion for the classic handgunners. This is not a real new paintjob, but an old paintjob that was touched up (a lot) to bring it close to the standard of the rest of the unit.

All very very nice
I love the vivid colours you have gone for , I wouldn't have the confidence to try that.
I am just trying to get the hang of half yellow and half purple

I've seen him and others like the halberdier champion with the eyepatch and the great swordsmen with helmet and visor down who's punching the air with his free hand for around £15-£20 a piece - made me smile as I'd been flicking through old White Dwarfs and seen them advertised at the back for a quid or so!
-
:o Anyone want to buy my second copy of this figure for £15 + shipping?

Sorry I'm saving up for Ozrim Chardz! ;D
Loon! lol
I remember painting those Empire gunners for my local store when they first came out. Nice job WK - but they are still too tall!
-
At least you can't say I'm a racist (make that speciesist). :D
-
I'm not too fond of the whole puffy sleeves thing, but this is getting better and better for every post! =) Really like the bright colours. Isn't it time for a new army shot soon? In comparison to the one on page 1.
-
I'd like to hold out on that until I've had a chance to touch up all the old models. Or otherwise do an armyshot restricted to the more recent ones.
-
3 more Marauder dwarves, all unconverted. The one with the sword and pistol is a much underrated (and underused) figure. I don't think I've ever seen one painted and it isn't as sought after as the MM15 set, but it's still pretty good.

-
A minor update. Not a new paintjob, but another touch up of an old one to bring it closer in line with my current standard, without going for a full repaint.
This figure is slightly converted (original one was golding a lantern, which I replaced with a sword) and based on a DSA figure by Werner Klocke (now available through Ral Partha Europe):

Nice adventurer for WHFR, mercenary I guess.
-
Nice job, WK. Subtle difference but you did some more work on her face. What else?
Also, those dwarfs got some mighty big guns! =D Like the pistoleer a lot!
-
some work on face and hands, some highlights on clothing (though apparently the camera didn't capture it very well), some subtle woodgrain on crossbow and highlights on the crossbow um... string thingy, highlighting of the brown leather (except the boots).
-
We have her around here somewhere... I really should dig her out and paint her. I had not seen a picture of a painted version - she looks good! As always, thanks for sharing!
-
Great stuff - like the detail you added on the crossbow!
-
I think it's a smashing model - always refreshing to see female models that look like proper soldiers/warriors and not tarts and harlots.
-
The range has some good models (and some less good).

They're just quick shots while they are being painted. The unit will be much bigger when it's done.

Convincing conversions, plastics are good for something then :D looking forward to the finished unit!

Your idea of poor photos showing no highlights makes me want to cry - you're already as good or better than anything I do, and you have the audacity to say it looks bad? WK, I could learn to hate you. Not quite as much as Cap'n Blood, or Benbow, but maybe as much as Orctrader.
You need to stop though - seriously. I look at this project, and almost set down one of the three projects that are at the top of the queue, just to go find my box of old school Citadel dwarves and start painting. If you keep distracting me, I'll never finihs my pirates, or my Undead Pirates, or my Victoria's Hussars...
-
WK, I could learn to hate you.
Now that's what I call a compliment. 8)

weren't these supposed to be halflings? :P
nice work though

I said after the unit is completed. ;)
And... um... after the orcs I'm doing for my orc spearmen detachment. ::)

Two more Foundry orcs for the unit. The one with the pipe is a conversion from one of their non-landsknecht war orcs, as the range had run out of variants for me to use and I didn't want to resort to doubles. More to follow.

Please do! =D Nothing like a little sodomy...
Really liking your approach to orc skin btw... nice high lighting, and splendid sculpting on the pipe smokeR.

the main colours used for the orc skin are actually avocado and artichoke. lol

I always thought Orcs were fungus based creatures! ;)

Such can be the consequences of substance abuse if you're an orc!
What about something along these lines? :D
(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/Orcs/P3020278.jpg)
-
Oh, that's what you meant... ::) lol
I wanted my orcs to be green, because I'm a traditionalist, but I also wanted that green to look like a skintone and not a green bodypaint and these shades seemed to do that for me. :)
-
Yeah its a nice green - afraid I'm a stickler for the more lurid end of the green spectrum for my little orcses! :D
Perhaps the pic's not too clear but I was also suggesting that what might be next could be something along the lines of the two snotties (centre of the pic) suffering from a wee drink or two!
Less eye-watering than the conversion you mentioned earlier! ;)
-
Yes, I did figure out what you meant with the picture. :)
Less eye-watering than the conversion you mentioned earlier! ;)
But now that I've thought about it, there is a certain irresistable appeal to it... :o
-
I look forward?! to seeing it! lol
Yes, I did figure out what you meant with the picture.
Sorry - thought my chavvy, lime green snotties had distracted you into talking about skintones! :D
-
Although your snotlings made me imagine a unitfiller of an orc lying on his back and a goblin propped up to his side, both drunk and with an empty keg on it's side with the last few drops dripping onto the ground. I'll do that one first perhaps, it's less shocking. ;)
-
Sounds great - I think you would also need a half-drowned snottie inside the barrel too!
Talking about shocking - what about that Scibor vignette with the amorous Dwarf and Goblin that surfaced on Frothers some time ago as another filler... ;)
-
Interesting idea about the snottie. Will think about it.
That scibor vignette is just sick though. ;)
-
lol
Its not right is it!
-
Jolly nice painting there really like those, were you using the foundry triad forest green?
its come out really well
dodge
-
No I was using craft paints. Avocado for the basecoat and shadows and artichoke for the second coat, after that artichoke mixed with old GW rotten flesh for highlights (the old paints, that are now coat d'arms). On the first ones there was an intermediary step between the first coats which was a mix of avocado and current gw camo green, but I skipped it on the last ones (partly because the gw paint is drying up on me as they always do).
-
Inbetween adding new painted troops to the army, I've also taken to touching up the old ones, as my painting style and level has evolved greatly. I'm not going for a perfect match as that would require a complete repaint, but getting them close enough so they don't stand out on the table when put next to eachother. Latest one to get the treatment is my old helblaster:

Nice work as always - like the ballistics equations on the chief gunner's clipboard!

Nice stuff, WK! A world of difference on the grey beard! The yellow cloth on all are a lot better too!
I still think you should post up a total shot of them all, as they are now. Please! =)

That's the business there, mate! :-* Now, do one with the full army! ;)

I will. It's just that my knights are currently being touched up (and in the case of two figures converted) and in that intermediary phase where they look worse than before. So I'll do the group shot when they are done.

Not much to say that haven't been said allready - but they still look great! =D Especially the ginger chap turned out well, effective black lining on the face! If anything, I think you could have even darker shades inbetween fingers etc.
-
That's an impressive group shot - the new fellas are looking great too.
Got to say I know they're not very landsknechtly (if that's a word) but I always loved the highland flavoured dwarf clansmen that Marauder did back then too.

Not enough natural light to take pictures by, but it'll have to do. 3 more Marauder dwarves, all three converted to look a little different:

Hair- and beardextensions and a sash were added:

Seemless additions. I have said before you have talent with the putty. A bit of patience and you could knock out full original sculpts of this ilk. I know, "I dont have time or the inclination or my mum says I can't" etc :D
-
I'm pretty sure my mum would have no say in it. ;)
-
Very nice conversions indeed 8)
-
The beards are so full and luxurious - fabulous extensions darling! ;)
Nice way to get a bit of variation out of your minis too. :D

As i have said elsewhere...This project is one of the most inspiring that I've seen...These are some of my favorite figures of all time and I love what you have done with them!

-
A touchup of an old paintjob and additional conversion on a kitbatched footknight. The figure uses parts from the knightly order sprue with legs from an old command model. Originally I had only glued on the plastic fur cape that came with the knights set, but before partially repainting it, I added the extensions with the claws over the shoulder to make it look more like the old metal knights panther (which are also being touched up currently). I should have extended it all the way as it doesn't blend all that well into the plastic, but oh well, too many things to do to revisit this a third time.
-
so do you have a whole unit of them?
-
No, didn't have enough legs. But now with the plastic greatswords sprue, I've been thinking about making a unit of them. :)
But still need to finish revamping the mounted ones. ;)
-
My first warrior priest... with a twist.
He's supposed to be an imperial dwarf warriorpriest, converted from an Alionas miniature. Additions include the plastic hammers, new face and head, new breastplate, sculpted holy book, icons on the shoulderplates and some smaller mods. This is an attempt to reconcile classic marauder feel with present day empire iconography, using a basemodel that is neither citadel or marauder. I think he came out ok. The original mini had a beard which got removed and replaced with a decorated breastplate. A beardless dwarf would be odd though, so I decided to hide the lower half of the face with a neckguard (which is typical of WP's anyway) and show just a hint of hairgrowth. The original head was pretty small too, so I bulked it out and resculpted the face. His shoulderplates received one of those german crosses and a twintailed comet.

Very nice WK, the conversion is great! Could do with a slightly stronger shading on the hands (fingers) but that's just me whining really. :D :) Top notch, as usual! I'm warming to your bases, btw... didn't like them at first but now I really do.

The trouble with the hands is that they are sculpted as mittens (no fingers) and I just painted on the fingerhighlights to simulate their shape coming through the gloves. I should have converted the hands too, but as I was aiming to get this figure done in time for a painting contest on the Bugman's Brewery forum, I didn't bother.

The bandana-headed figure got an all new hat and a real beard.
A hard figure to modify without cutting it up. I ended up giving him a beard extension, a feather and a bowtie sash.
Dwarf with crossbow. I didn't think the original figure really fit the theme (looked like a smallfooted dwarf in a dress really). So I added landsknecht shoes, puffy sleeves and a jacket.

I couldn't resist the temptation to slap some paint on a couple mastercastings. Bit miffed that the camera ignored the extra care I put in the highlighting and shading, but what are you going to do... Quite happy with the sallet helmet though as my metals usually suck.

Lovely WK, really nice. I love the old school dwarves, although I'm not too sure about their pole arms
What is it you don't like about them? :)
-
Thanks for the tip, I wonder if there are some GW equivalents.
I specifically don't like the polearms/halberds of the last lot you posted. In my opinion (and this is only my opinion) they look pretty chunky- almost as though the axe head was added on as an after thought.
The halberds on your previous models are much nicer. But hey the miniatures are still fantastic!
Cheers
Andy

Looking mighty fine!
I can't halberd like them... :D
Really very sorry - that was terrible! ;D

well, the creamcolour is a lot like bleached bone, no idea about the beige though.

I finally get to see them!!! These images were blocked by my work firewall...it was torture waiting to get home...but well worth it! They seem to fit perfectly and will really help to add some variety to my Dwarf units...can't wait!!! (did I say that already)
Any chance of painted cav?

Any chance of painted cav?
When they get back from the mouldmaker. They're on a different mastermould.

Those are awesome WK, they certainly look part of the same range but they are also yours which must just add to the awesomeness.
For the record I don't have a problem with the new halberds.

The dwarf halberdier is a simple conversion of a Marauder dwarf cannon crewfigure. Just added a halberdhead (this one came from an old Heroquest plastic weapon).

The ogre is a conversion of the Marauder ogre with halberd, using a dwarf slayer standard top, a tied halfling from an old metal giant kit, a plastic shield from 6th edition with some added battlewear and a Foundry great orc sword (ramage). Modifications were made to the shape of the hat, the face, the hair, the trousers, the knife in the back was removed as was the small rat, a feather and a large sash were added, in order to make it as different as possible from the original figure (which will also be added to the unit later on).

I just took another enjoyable stroll through your thread. Not only are all your pieces INCREDIBLY COOL, the quality of your painting has gotten noticeably better as you progressed. WONDERFULLY WELL DONE!

Poor little thing... lol
Very nice work, very colorful too 8)
-
Simple but extremely effective conversions, here - spiced with a wonderful paint job. Thank WK, you just made my day.
-
Those ogres are looking great, as are the dwarfs!
Love the little chap! 8)
-
Great ogre there, WK! The details on the standard works really well!
-
Finally had some time to finish something. 6 more WK-dwarfs. Nothing too fancy, just tabletop standard.
No conversions, all are assembled from the sets as they are. 4 with spears/pikes and 2 with halberds.

For some reason, this one gives me a vibe of Warwick Davis with a fake beard:
I wasn't very fond of this head initially, but when I put it on this body and started applying paint, it all sort of came together. Also pleased with the red on this figure.
Normally there wouldn't be this gap visible from the side between the beard and the belly, but it's mostly due to me putting his head at a slight angle, bringing it more forward. Only noticed after I started painting.
-
VERY COOL...the Vertically Challenged ones have an abundance of charm. I love the reddish tint to their noses...shows a certain devotion to their cups. As always, VERY WELL DONE!
-
Got my 16 dwarfs yesterday and I'm still drooling when looking at them ;D - and now seeing some of them painted so nicely really makes me want to start doing my own. But shouldn't - other projects with high priority I need doing this month - like Asterix's, a Marauder-ish Chaos Dwarf and some old Pickford gems. Hopefully I'll be able to control myself and not get distracted lol
-
...give in to the White Knight Clam....let go your inhibitions and turn to the white side... lol
Cheers,
Blue

I thought I'd try my hand at a couple mastercastings of infantry sets two and three (next in line for productionmoulding). I armed both with spears/pikes and I think they turned out pretty well.
Some individual shots:
This one has got to be my favourite of the plug in type bodies:
And with some Marauder dwarfs with similar poses.
The weapon shafts are the same length, it is just that they are a bit more at an angle on my figures. Overall, I think they match op pretty well:
I haven't painted any of the marauder plug ins with the spear variant yet, but at least this gives a good comparison of the bodies:
-
Looking good - a unit of those pikemen is going to brilliant with those front rankers with pikes levelled!
-
While John is busy expanding the range of ponies and riders, I fixed up a set of slightly flawed mastercastings and applied some paint to them. The bases are standard plastic cavalry bases (50mmx25mm). I think they ended up looking pretty sharp.
Some individual shots. I love the shouting face on this one:

A final side by side with a model on foot, for size.

WK,
Wow these look fantastic!! Very cool sculpts and a great paint job. I think both you and John out did yourselves with these guys. I can't wait to add them to my army.
Cheers,
Blue
-
Flipping ace, both models and painting! Saying this might get me a bad rep, but I love the ponies! :D ;D I will be getting some of these! Any update on riders on foot, btw? =)
-
Any update on riders on foot, btw? =)
No, too many other things to finish up first before moving onto those, but I have added them to the list. :)
-
VERY COOL minis & VERY WELL PAINTED! Th ponies appropriately seem to have a major attitude problem. If I had the means, I would be handing you my $s on a regular basis.
-
The ponies appropriately seem to have a major attitude problem.
I agree! the second pony in particular is not to be triffled with...he's got a funny look in his eye.... :-[
Loverly!
Blue
-
Well, they serve alongside human troops and their leggy warhorses. They have gotten used to the mockery and the taunts because of their small stature and have decided that they may have to take this crap from their allies, but they sure as hell won't stand for it from their foes...
-
Sometimes I'm tempted to paint up a couple pink and blue, my little pony style.
Then the urge passes and the world if safe again for a while.
-
:D :D thank God for that WK...If I were to do so I wouldn't be able to keep my daughter away from them!
Blue
-
Tbh I didn't like the ponies when I saw the greens but they look grand painted! :D
-
You are a very evil man, WK - could at least have save these till John had finished converting the rest and Pete have started making moulds >:( Updates like this is killing me - slowly :D
But darn they look good painted. You did an excellent job on them.
Pink and blue ponies ...?? :o - so glad I have two boys then :)
Wil these only be handling pistols? or will there be opional weapon hands for these as well?
-
Pink and blue ponies ...?? :o - so glad I have two boys then :)
ha...Ponies are the least of my problems...my house is infested with faries, mermaids, and princesses...I tried to steer her away from the pink and purple....but the force is strong with this one... lol
Blue
-
Wil these only be handling pistols? or will there be opional weapon hands for these as well?
Something like that. ;)
-
Thanks ;)
-
Really nice work on the beasties. I personally favour the non shouty face but thaze iz mitey fine :)
-
Well, I prefer the facial hair on the other head, so I love them both.
In a manly, heterosexual fashion.
-
Wow! Those ponies and riders look fantastic. Your sculpting is improving with every new release. They just look fantastic painted. And for all us "oldies" who love the old style minis, you have caputered them perfectly. Job well done.
-
I tried my hand on some mastercastings of the goblins Kev Adams sculpted for me and they came out rather well I think. Kev put loads of detailed textures on them that should be brought out nicely by some gentle drybrushing (though in this case I spent ages painting on the highlights instead, and of course they don't really show up at all in the pictures). The multipart figures went together without need for filling.
The first goblin is one of the close combat models, with separate heads, right hands and shields. I chose to equip this first try with a sword, though spear and halberd options are available too. The freehand on the shield is a bit weak, but that's not my strong point. There was also some problem with the primer, making one of his cheeks a bit rougher than it should be.
The second one is of the plug-in hand type and comes with separate head and separate hands. I thought this head, with the hat and earring worked really well with this body.
A quick size and style comparison with a couple Foundry mercenary orcs, also sculpted by Kev Adams:

-
Holy ... ! They look awesome painted :) Almost make me want some.
You did great on them - and they work (as expected) perfect with the Ogres/orcs - and will give people a great chance for a nice theme O&G army.
-
Nicely painted. Weird models though (not the quality, mind you but I do have an issue with "civilized" goblins and this "Landsknecht meets Fantasy" genre. But that's just my personal taste).
-
Yeah, I get what you mean. :)
-
Hmm, must resist starting a new sobh warband!
-
Hmm, must resist starting a new sobh warband!
Give in to temptation, it's the only effective way to deal with it. ;)
-
First time I've seen this thread, and I just went through the whole thing--wow!! Very nice work on everything. I'm not quite so keen on the 'civilized' greenskins, but that's just the concept behind the figure. Your paint job on them is amazing.
-
Two more painted. A pikeman from the second set (attention poses) and a halberdier from the third set (front ranks).
While the highlights don't show up well in the pictures, I'm actually quite happy with the pikedwarf. Painting the little pouch green also helped to break the monotony that is starting to creep in the group due to repetition of the colourscheme. I will add more little touches like that on the occasional figure.
The second one looks pretty bad in the pictures. Lack of good lighting sort of nullified the highlights on the red and yellow.
-
Almost unbearable watching these and see them painted so nicely ;D - really, really need them. Need them badly. Need them soon ;)
-
Another three dwarfs with pikes. One is the Marauder MB1 Sergeant figure, the other two are from the second infantry set of my commissioned dwarves.
First the Marauder sergeant. This has been one of my favourite marauder dwarfs for a long time, so glad I could finally slap some paint on it. I wasn't too sure about some of the choices midpainting, but in the end, I think he came out pretty well.
Secondly, one of my dwarfs, using the "amish" looking head. It's one of the best heads in the set IMO and it works well with this body. I also used one of the separate swords in scabbards to add some more detail:
The last one is also from the second core infantry set and is probably the combination of parts that has the most puff & slash for that much craved for landsknecht mercenary feel. Even his hat has them!
Some more pictures, the first of the 4 body poses from set two, the second a (non-exhaustive) selection of poses from sets 1-3, all armed with pikes.
-
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your Dwarves. Beyond the GREAT paint jobs, they all have such TREMENDOUSLY well defined personalities. I look forward to each new post...keep up the FINE WORK & keep an Old Man happy.
-
Looking great, WK. Beautiful, as always :-* and keep them coming, please.
Really have to get back in gear an start doing my own. Hopefully a week in Spain will do me good and give me motivation to start painting again :P Else, I'm rather sure that some Pony Cavalry will do the trick ;)
-
No ponies until you finished what's on your plate! >:D
-
Yes, Dad :(
Can I at least have one just for toping then ? - so my plate would look even more tasty? :)
-
Take a few bites first of what you have now and I'll think about it. ;)
-
Two of the upcoming ponyriders (not long now). I used different colours on the ponies so that each regiment will stand apart (pistoliers, lancers, swords).
First of a unit of "Imperial Dwarf Greys". Where most other regiments rely on pistols or lances to soften up the enemy, the Greys charge directly in to battle with nothing but their swords, yelling out their defiance. They are famous for only riding grey ponies, making them instantly recognisable on the field of war.
First of the Imperial Light Lancers. Sort of botched up whatever is visible of the face. This regiment will have dark brown ponies.
And a side by side with the two pistoliers I did earlier:

You have got the painting of the ponies honed to perfection. They look brilliant.
-
Ohh yes :)
Awesome PJs - and really, really dig that "Captain" with his sword stretched out. Fantastic.
Please make sure, that I get some of these as soon as they are "out", will you?
-
I promise. ;)
I wanted to experiment a bit with different colours for the ponies and they came out pretty good. Seeing them all mixed up like that makes me think that if I do a 4th unit, I might mix the colours of the ponies.
Though I'll probably be sick of them by the time I've painted three full units. lol
I like the new ponies too. If you thought they looked angry before, I wouldn't stand in their way now. No matter how small they may be. ;D
-
It goes without saying that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your Vertically Challenged Cohorts. The ponies are PERFECT; anyone who has had the misfortune of dealing with the Nasty Little Beasties knows what a severe attitude problem they have...in spades. The colors really capture the Renaissance mod. WONDERFULLY WELL DONE!
If you'd ever care to swap some of your minis for some of my Tree/Mushroom Creatures drop moi a P.M..
-
So which one's Pinkie Pie? :D
In all seriousness, nice coat work, I like the attention to detail on their nostrils - makes it look like they're flaring.
-
So which one's Pinkie Pie? :D
Stop it, I already have a hard time resisting temptation to paint one pink and purple just for the fun.
-
Stop it, I already have a hard time resisting temptation to paint one pink and purple just for the fun.
BE STRONG; the temptation will pass! Pink & Purple Ponies is SO GIRLY the thought of it is enough to make my teeth hurt.
-
If you'd ever care to swap some of your minis for some of my Tree/Mushroom Creatures drop moi a P.M..
Interesting suggestion, I'll keep it in mind. 8)
-
Are there going to be arm choices for all of them that include pistols?
-
Yes. They'll be available as either all pistols or all spears/swords.
See here for the various bits (1st post and 3rd post): http://whiteknightminiatureimperium.blogspot.com/search/label/Core%20cavalry%20greens (http://whiteknightminiatureimperium.blogspot.com/search/label/Core%20cavalry%20greens)

:o :o :o
Yep! these are stupendous...can't wait to wield a whole dwarf cavalry WING!! The Charge of the little Brigade!
Excellent paint jobs on excellent sculpts!
Blue
-
Der Zwerg Ponyreiten!!!
These are excellent, those ponies look well and truly pissed off! Really like them all though.
-
Are there going to be arm choices for all of them that include pistols?
Wait, now I think I may have misunderstood your question. Can you elaborate? :)
-
No, you answered just fine. I just wanted to know that if I were to spend my hard-earned cash on the little buggers, I wasn't going to be stuck with spears.
Not that I can justify the expenditure any time soon...
-
3 more dwarfs finished.
I think I'm going to use a lot of sallet helmets with the halberdiers unit. It helps to tie them together. And they look great.
I used a couple bits from the "pouches and dagger sprue" (namely, a pouch and the dagger) on the next one. These little details help to further customise the figures (aside from the head and arm options) and make each one look unique.
One of my plug-in types for the pike unit. Highlights sort of got washed out in the pictures. Unit is now 20 pikes strong, I will bring it up to 30 (including command) and later, after I rounded out some of the other units, I may expand it to a block of 40 or 50.
-
As always, fantastic job, WK. They look so good and nice crisp colours. 20 you say ??!? Not bad, and don't you think its time to show us a complete ranked unit? Hope so :)
-
20 you say ??!? Not bad, and don't you think its time to show us a complete ranked unit? Hope so :)
Well, there are some marauders mixed in, so it's not a full WK unit. Will post unit shots soonish, when I've added command.
-
they're really cute! I should get mine painted, as the gate guard of Witchtown :)
-
Well, there are some marauders mixed in, so it's not a full WK unit. Will post unit shots soonish, when I've added command.
Won't hold that against you ;D
Always come down to needing those commands. Hopefully you got some old Marauders, or are yours just round the corner?
-
GREAT color choices are becoming a hallmark to your Dwarfs. Added paraphernalia is a Ffine way go give the minis added individuality/character. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Always come down to needing those commands. Hopefully you got some old Marauders, or are yours just round the corner?
I got some Marauders. Mine will still be a while as John hasn't got time to work on them this month. :'(
-
Sad for you of course, but am glad to know that John is kept busy :D Think Richard (Otherworld) is expecting rather a lot from him (like 3 huge/giant spiders and about 10 wolf riders - and probably even more). Been long since he last had an OW release, IMO.
-
Two more figures for the pikedwarf unit, this time original Marauder minis.
The first one is the one from the legendary MM15 set, which explains why he got a bit more attention from the sculptor. It's a single part model and looks great. I'm pretty happy with how he came out, as I think the colours work for him.
The second one is one of the marauder dwarfs with plug-in weapons (pikes, crossbows and handguns were made for them), and since I already painted copies of this body for my handgunners and crossbows, it's a bit less interesting, though I did manage to come up with another colour scheme for him that's different enough from my previous copies, while still respecting the general scheme.
A quick picture with similarly armed "WK" dwarfs:
-
Appropriately flashy Little Dudes...VERY WELL DONE!
-
I love those models (both the originals and the new WK sculpts), and you do them justice.
-
I just love them!
-
Lovely paintings, again.
The MM15 might have had a bit more love but the second one is one of my all time favorites:
Really like how he holds the spear. Looks like a solid grip, if the enemy is coming at you, fast ;) Like yours too, but I'm glad, that I'm not to hold the spear. Guess, you'll have a rather sore wrist by the end of the day :)
-
:-* :-* :-*
Pure AWESOME!
Blue
-
I absolutely love these. I honestly wish I could paint at the skill you do. :? :-* :o Could you tell me how you paint in the way you do? ???
-
I can't do any fancy blending (too slow) so it's old school layering for me. No drybrushing ever, not even on hair.
I prime white, then paint thinned black into all the places I want to have some blacklining and on the metals. I don't leave black lines between cloth of different colour, but some thin ones between different textures: cloth, leather, skin, hair, weapons.
For most colours, I don't use more than three or four shades max. I usually start with the darkest shade, as it will stay in the folds and crevices and covers the spots of black paint where I've been messy (almost everywhere). So for red, I start with a colour called portwein, blue starts with dark blue, yellow starts with vomit brown, etc... Then I paint over that with the base coat, leaving some of the darker colour for shading. Then one or two highlights on that, depending on the colour. Any more and I would never finish anything.
For a few colours, like the skin or the pony bodies, I invert the first two steps: first the base skintone and then wash with thinned paint for the shading, after that highlight as normal.
And for dotting the eyes I use a black micropen, best investment I made, it's sooo easy. :)
-
Something that was long overdue, the command figures for the Marauder Miniatures MB1 Dwarfs with pikes. It's only when I started editing the pictures I realised I forgot to finish their noses with my trademark "red nose". This omission was quickly rectified but by then the good light was gone, so you'll have to do with these pictures for now.
The champion. It's a great figure, but I don't think I did justice to it. I feel I could have picked the colours better.
The standard bearer. A great figure that I decided to put some extra care in, with the striped trousers. The banner is made from my usual material of stiff, posable foil (the kind you find in little dishes for chinese food, premade lasagna's, etc... Since I don't eat that stuff, I simply bought some empty ones which can also be had in a lot of places).
I'm rather happy with the little flag, even though the best part of it is hidden. It's a simplistic design, far from the little masterpieces others craft for their standarbearers. I remembered to take a picture before gluing it on, but after adding the curves. The shield looks asymmetrical in the picture because of the curve, but it's not.
The musician, this is the least interesting figure of the three, but quite possibly the single example of a dwarf playing a flute. And it's still a good figure in it's own right too.
And finally, a couple long overdue group shots of the unit so far (25 dwarfs, more to add). They are a mixture of WK dwarfs, Marauder originals and a few marauder conversions.
-
Lovely pikemen and a lovely command group. I painted that standard bearer up for my clansmen years ago, I had to pin the hand in place as the connection is rather flimsy :)
-
I should have done that too. I'm sure I'll curse and do it the first time the bond breaks.
-
Nice collection of miniatures even if they all dont have red noses ;).
-
That is a really handsome unit. May they never know defeat!
-
My photography skills suck for group shots though. :?
-
Photo skills or not! - that's a mighty impressive looking unit. Job well done, WK. Now, how need command figures when such beauties excists :P Nah, just kidding of course - will be looking forward seeing your take on commands - and see them take their rightful place.
On a side note, I just want to let you know, that the most awesome miniatures has just arrived. Can't really believe how good they are. Certainly worth waiting for. Thanks for such fast service ;)
-
Nah, just kidding of course - will be looking forward seeing your take on commands - and see them take their rightful place.
They will offer some options too (heads and such), probably more than I need myself given that I already have marauder command figures for 3 out of 5 core infantry units.
On a side note, I just want to let you know, that the most awesome miniatures has just arrived. Can't really believe how good they are. Certainly worth waiting for. Thanks for such fast service ;)
I assume they're assembled and undercoated as we speak?
;)
-
Not yet, first I need to document them for the Pickford-Wiki, of course;)
And then I think the first one will actually be a conversion. Really like the two Pistoliers, but as the rest of them will be armed with spears and shields ;D, I have to find a good use for them. So one might actually be turned into at heavy armoured medieval knight - if I can scultp a decent lance;)
-
Wk,
Hey man...quick question...will the Cav heads be available separately? I would love to mix in a few their helmets into my pike block too.
The Marauder Command section looks amazing... :-*...As I have stated else where these are the figures that got me hooked on Marauder back in the day so its awesome to see them so well painted and grouped up with your excellent additions. I'll get there some day!
Cheers,
Blue

Hey man...quick question...will the Cav heads be available separately? I would love to mix in a few their helmets into my pike block too.
They already are. ;)
So one might actually be turned into at heavy armoured medieval knight - if I can scultp a decent lance;)
Isn't this going to be a problem when I release the actual heavily armoured knights? ;)
-
Nah, don't think so. Pretty sure he'll be needing some friends ;)
-
Great looking unit, they all fit really well together, the Marauder dwarfs and yours, it is hard to tell which are which.
I look forward to start painting my own little dwarf army, but so many projects, so I have to wait a little bit before I have the time.
-
That really is an EXCELLENT looking pike block. What's striking for moi is the way they work so well together yet retain their individuality...very Renaissance.
-
2 more ponyriders, one for the lances and one for the swords. I used one of the separate feathers that come with the sets on these two. A quick hole drilled in the back of the helmet, feather inserted and voila.
The second of the Light Lances. I decided to try out something else for the armour and leave it black, with gold trim. I may do this for the whole unit, to set them further apart from the pistoleers and the greys.

Second figure for the Imperial Dwarf Greys.

Awesome!
I can move back to painting some early next month. I have to do a few fellows for a couple of Mordheim warbands, but then some of these pony-lads are next on deck. I am seriously looking forward to painting on them.
-
Awesome paintjob, WK :) And have to admit, that Im slightly surprise seeing how good the black armour would turn out. Would have thought it would have worked out that well. Will be looking forward see a unit painted like that.
-
I love those Little Guys; the cavalry are the COOLEST of a VERY COOL array of minis...I think the attitude the ponies evince is the extra bit that makes the minis. Your paint job takes them to yet a higher level...WELL DONE!
-
While the goblins are with Pete Brown for productionmoulding, I couldn't resist temptation to paint a couple spare mastercastings of the new ones. Last time I painted one with sword and shield and one with a handgun, this time I'd do one with spear and shield, one with a crossbow and two with halberds

First two of the Goblin Halberdier unit. I decided to give all the goblins in this unit helmets (luckily, I have 4 variants, so they don't all need to look the same) and a majority of them breastplates. This will give them a certain uniformity. I'm quite happy with how they look and the helmets almost give me a LOTR vibe. The scrolls on the shield read "We Be Goblin" (mostly because there wasn't enough room to add the "s" at the end).
The one with the spear uses one of the handless "shooter" bodies and the shield with a hand already sculpted onto it. I noticed after assembly that the shield is pointing a bit to the ground. It could have been placed differently with a quick pass with a needlefile on the sleeve. Hopefully this option will help to make them look sufficiently different from the "thrusting the spear with both hands" option (as seen on the second halberdier) and add to the variety. Oh, and the little scroll on the shield says "Up Yours". They may be dressed as civilised beings, but they're still rude goblins after all.
The crossbow goblin. Not much to say, other than that I realised when I started painting it that if I'd given it a spear instead of a crossbow, he'd look a lot like the marauder MM15 pikedwarf.

VERY WELL DONE! Your Goblins bring out an aspect of the Goblin Guys that G.W. choices to ignore; i.e., Goblins are snappy dressers.
-
Lovely!
Cant wait to see some with the alternate Halfling heads.

Nor can I ;)
But it's nice killing the time watching such awesome paints. Very well done, WK :)

Last week at CRISIS 2011 I came upon a trader from France who had lots of those grey and red hard foam medieval/renaissance buildings (apparently made by/sold through Ziterdes in Europe, though I've seen them under the Conflix label in the US). Now I had always been sceptical about this stuff, but two of the buildings caught my eye that day and I had to admit they had quite a bit of detail on them and whoever made the original master put quite a lot of effort in them. I also liked how sturdy (and light) it all felt. There would be no need to worry about damage caused by someone accidentally bumping into it (you know who you are), or the bond of glue loosening as I always worry about on resin buildings. So I decided to take a chance and pick up the two I liked (the other is a watermill).
The true test of course would be how they look with a coat of paint. After trying it, I think it works. Here's the first one, which is supposed to be a wizards house, but I'll probably use it as an apothecary or such.

Very Nice!
A lovely looking building that you have really brought to life with a great paint job!
I want one!

Great paint job on that building WK. I saw the same 1 today in my local game store and wasn't impressed.
I now have to admit I was wrong :) My lack of vision I suppose not the buildings quality.

Great job on the building.
-
Lovely paints (as always), WK. Think I might have to give Ziterdes a good look :)
-
I like the timber-framed building, but the main part of the tower, even with a good paint job, is dull: it looks like a cardboard tube. Perhaps some ivy could help?
By the way, I assume that this is a solid block, with no interior. Is that right?
-
I agree the tower is a bit dull, but I just wanted to see what it would look like painted without embellishments.
It's hollow inside, but the walls are thick and the roof is attached to the whole.

I had a look, but sadly, it looks like their 'bargain' stuff is not on their website.
Thanks for the thought, though. :D

You could try and e-mail them? :)

An update at last. I haven't been painting a lot lately, the winter season is never a good one for me in that regard as I can't motivate myself to get on with it. At least I managed to finish this building that sat on my desk 95% complete. This is the second of the two Ziterdes hardfoam buildings I got at Crisis.
This second one is supposed to be a watermill but I chickened out and didn't add the wheel, mainly because I haven't built any water/river terrain yet and I want it all to match when I do. There were a couple small flaws to this building, but overall it's a light and sturdy piece that does look the part.

Not much painting done, but I did manage to convert and paint this Lemax well I picked up at a discount. The scale isn't perfect, but stylewise it fits in well. I replaced the rope and handle, removed the buckets and added a small step.

Nice work on everything though. Really enjoy reading through the entire thread now and then.

At long last I managed to slap some paint on some of the first mastercastings of the dwarf zweihänders and I may be biased, but I think they look bloody fantastic. It's almost a shame that some of the wonderful detail is hidden on their backs as it really helps to set them apart from the rank and file. These are clearly better paid soldiers, with access to the very best fineries and equipment.
I went for a more uniformed look to these as they are professional elite soldiers and may be subject to more strict uniform regulations. There is of course room for individuality even within the most strict corset (not that they're wearing those underneath that armour) (I hope). I think the bright colours I use throughout the army work especially well on these figures.

Very awesome! Looking forward to adding these to my next order lol

No news on batch 2 as the rubber for the mould hadn't arrived yet when I last asked.

Griffin have been very busy with the Salute show coming up.Great additions to the range.John is keeping very busy.
-
Well, I don't use Griffin, but I do fear the Salute buildup is going to thwart my plans for getting these (and the dwarf and goblin command figures) productionmoulded and cast over the course of the next weeks. :-[
-
They look great. I fear I may be forced to place a new order relatively soon. Theoretically I am cutting back since I am in a painting slump, but some figures are harder to resist than others...
-
Looks great, it almsot make me feel ashamed for my dwarfs who are still hanging around in their basecoat.

Ummm, my last order isn't even base-coated. Ahem.

True, I actually think that finding and collecting miniatures is just as large part of my hobby as painting and I use much more time collecting than gaming.

I've been asked several times for a group shot and I've always put it off. Well, now I had the dwarf figures out, so I thought it was the occasion to snap a few pictures.

.....dddddrrrroooolllll....
Seb...in a thread on Bugmans not long ago you saw someone's very colorful work on your pike dwarfs and commented something like "sometimes I wonder why I chose such a limited palette for my force"....well my friend...this is Why! This force is as cohesive and painted to as high a level of any force I've seen...perhaps my favorite dwarf army ever...including my own!!!!
All of those pictures are stored for inspiration....thanks for sharing them.
Keep up the excellent work!

That is one awesome army :-*

:-* :-* :-*
Absolutely lovely!
The army looks fantastic together. The overall look with all the bright colours looks amazing, especially with those lovely buildings as a backdrop.
No better advert for your own range than these pictures.
Great stuff!

Awesome...
This army brings back the warm fuzzy feeling of my early wargaming days...
-
LOVE THEM!!!
So much character it is ridiculous
All that is missing is a cheeky lil halfling regiment!!!
-
Stunning ...
- and it all make sense now - everybody can now see that you certainly need more dwarfs :D
So you haven't painted any artillery, yet?? This army certainlly needs a cannon or two - so no need to sit on your hands :P - keep on working, my friend :)

Indeed, those beginnings of units you see here need to be expanded to blocks of 40-50 each. :D

I have several copies of the marauder cannon and swivel gun (and their respective crew) and will also get John to do a warmachine crew set, that I can then use with Empire warmachines (cannons, mortar, helblaster, hellstrom) and some older dwarf ones (90s flamecannon).
-
Dude, that Warrior Priest is awesome!!! :-* :-* :-*
-
Better pics of him somewhere earlier in this thread. ;)
-
My first warrior priest... with a twist.

I love the warrior priest too...he is a fantastic conversion.
WK I hope you don't mind if I point out that a similar model is now available from LAM...he certainly isn't as unique as WK conversion but is still quite a cool figure...he can be found here: http://www.lead-adventure.com/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=144
And I second Clams request...We NEED some Artillery support for this group!
Cheers,

I like the new LAM Cleric a lot, but what makes this one so much better is the heavy armour (Chainmail and Shoulderpads) and then WKs awesome body armour and hammer conversions :-* :-* :-* I want one - just like that. It scream so much war priest.
Really hope you'll let John do us one ;D ;D
- and I will be looking forward seeing your old and new crew men painted :P
-
There's definitely one planned for the range. The pose will probably be different, I already have something in mind for that.
-
Pose is not that important to me - just as long as you keep the heavy armour look and a hammer. And should the miniature include a book, well I wouldn't hold it against you :D
-
Finally another update with a newly painted figure. This is a captain with warhammer from the very unique Lead Adventure Miniatures Bruegelburg range. I'm quite relieved it is finished, not because I didn't like the sculpt, I think it's great, but because it seemed like it was an accident riddled experience. I lost count of the number of times this got dropped, chipped, splattered with paint from another project, dropped again and got the hand reglued at least 3 times. But I got it done and it looks good, so moving on!

Since it's been a while since I converted any dwarfs and I feel I have learned a few things since the last ones, I started a new one, over spare casting of my dwarf range. Lots more to do and a couple things to clean up, but so far it doesn't look too bad, the trousers came out particularly well. Next update (with arms) in a few days.

Not bad, not bad at all - and now the tricky part - getting the proportions and hands right :)
Will you try out doing a head, too?
Will be looking forward seeing the rest :)
-

I'll chicken out on the hands, recycling one of John's for the right hand and partially resculpting another for the left hand. Likewise, I'll probably convert one of John's heads (new beard and hair, some changes to the hat, perhaps a nosejob).
-
Looking good so far, WK.
Have a go at the difficult parts.
Go on, you know you want to!
:D
-
I might want to cast it up at some point though if it's good enough, so might as well use all means at my disposal to make sure it's the best I can do.
-

Well if it helps convincing yourself to try it I can tell you that I've just sculpt a hand, really not such a big problem - but no. 2 ... o_o Get them to looks the same, now that's the challenge.
-
I'm currently in the middle of a lot of converting and scratchbuilding. For starters, I'm making an updated version of my dwarf stretcherbearer party (http://"http://whiteknightminiatureimperium.blogspot.com/2010/03/dwarf-stretcher-bearers.html") (yes, so that's what that previously posted WIP sculpt was for), as I think I can make it better than the old one and perhaps cast up a few if the result is worth it. So far, it's going well enough, it's certainly better than the old one. Although I will have to tweak the left arm on the stretcherbearer body as it doesn't look right now (slightly too short I think). The left hand needs some work too:
With a couple heads (head conversion still WIP) and next to a metal dwarf for size:
I've also started on the casualty figure. I think he'll have an integral head. The stretcher needs work too:(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DTHiV65xspQ/T4rUtw0__iI/AAAAAAAAAtM/zO_PUHnF_KA/s1600/dwstretch2.jpg)
On an unrelated conversion, I'm also "imperialising a citadel dwarf from the handgunner set that came after the Marauder ones but before the current plastic ones. I really liked the idea for the original figure but it looked very flat and 2D. The addition of the wider helmet and puffy sleeves helps to flesh it out a bit. Still needs landsknecht shoes and a few little details:(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--91tpb5eeJA/T4rUuTHP-FI/AAAAAAAAAtc/6BX0pYp7WMI/s1600/dwdualpistols.jpg)
Also WIP is this scratchbuilt tover, based on a hexagonal card box (see on the left in the image) I found in the craft section of a local store. I think the idea is to decorate it and use it as a pencil box. Anyway, when I saw it, the size and shape screamed "tower" at me, so I had to pick it up. Still a few things to add, but it's getting close. One thing I learned is that on conical roofs, I really should go with individual tiles. As it is, I went with short strips, but that made it look very shoddy. But that works for me too.
I used some fine plastic mesh for the windows, which will hopefully give the impression of leaded glass when painted:
-
I wasn't happy with the way the left arm on the stretcherbearer looked (somewhat short, too far out and more puffy than the right arm, all due to trying to accomodate for the slightly large width of the stretcher I made earlier), so off it went and now the figure looks much more natural. Both arms are now the same length and thickness. I need to tidy a few small things and then he'll be good to go.
Compared to one of John's uncoverted models and with a couple WIP headvariants to go with him (honestly, they look better in the flesh).

The tower is slowly getting there, here's another look at those windows, with some paint on. Not perfect, but it will do.

The new Dwarf recruits are WONDERFUL as always, AND the Tower is UBERCOOL. Yours is a truly inspiring thread.
-
The work on the Dwarves is progressing very well, WK.
Love the pistolier most of all.
:-*
That Tower is brilliant, great find.
The haphazard look to the roof tiles just adds character.
It works for me!
Looking forward to seeing it finished.
:-*
-
Great stuff WK, the extra work (re-work) was well worth it on the stretcher chaps.
How do you find the time? I thought you still had a couple more to paint yet ;D
-
I haven't painted anything in the last two weeks except that building and it's not done yet. :'(
-
First attempt was good, but this is much better. Body looks much more balanced now. Sorry if it means you have to do a new stretcher, though. And heads will be a great addition to the range. Not sure I'll put a Sallet head on the bearers, but quite sure he'll be useful for something else.
Tower is great too. Looking forward seeing it finished :)
-
The stretcher bearers are fantastic, you have done well converting the more modern dwarf there too! I might just have to do the same!!!! :)
-
Great work on those conversions!!
-
Well, I managed to finish this hexagonal tower (see WIP above). I'm not entirely happy with it, but I learned a lot making it and will be able to improve with future builds. For those that wonder, the door is a resin cast from Antenociti's Workshop and the windows on the upper floor are plastic windows from the GW fortified manor set. The rest it scratchbuilt.

-
Well, I think it looks great, WK!
As for learning something: I think we all do that every time we take on a new builing project.
I certainly do!
Great work. I love those roof tiles!
:-*
-
Your sculpting really is top notch! Would you consider doing some tutorials or at least describe what techniques and tools you use to make some of the different types of detailing? Especially puffy sleeves - I am trying to master this myself at the moment...
-
Turned out great WK and very inspiring stuff *cough*but shouldn't you be painting Zweihänder and core command *cough* sorry, for the darn cold ;)
-
*cough*but shouldn't you be painting Zweihänder and core command *cough* sorry, for the darn cold ;)
I should, but I'm not. Got another building to complete (and some sculpting) before I can get back to painting the little metal men.
-
It seems appropriate that I would finish this building today, with the revival in all those wonderful fantasy town threads. ;)
It took a while to get it done, but I finished the Ziterdes windmill set. It's made from hardfoam with some lasercut wood details. It's a very large, and very nice model. The wings are a weak point in the design and I have pinned both them and the platform for maximum strength. I accidentally dropped it on the floor while painting and although one of the wings feels a bit loose if you push against it, it held.
I've included a few minis in the first and last picture to give a sense of scale. Did I mention it's big?
I decided to keep the actual mill part separate from the house part. Not only will this be easier for transporting, it also means the mill can be used on it's own without the rest of the building.
-
wow, it's really big! well done, WK, fine stuff, nicely painted. Something like that could need my town too :D
-
:o :o :o
Bloody hell!
That is magnificent, WK!
:-* :-* :-*
All I can say is: Can you PLEASE pack it in, too?
I really do not need tempting back to fantasy buildings at this precise moment!
Now you are joining the wonderful bandwagon with this colossol offering.
>:( >:( >:(
( ;) Absolutely love it, Sir! :-*)
-
Another building, a quicky this time as it is mostly stone. Another hardfoam one from the Ziterdes range. I'm calling it a belfort because that's what it looks like to me (for those not familiar with the term, it's a medieval watchtower/belltower). This is one of the more recent models in the range I think and it shows, crisp, hard edges and detail everywhere, you wouldn't believe this is foam until you pick it up and feel the weight. Hopefully they'll keep adding more with this level of quality.
I did some weathering on this that doesn't come out well in the pictures. Basically, some of those vertical streaks and shadows you may detect are actually greenish streaks in reality. Really. I'm actually quite happy how well this came out with minimal effort.

And in case you're wondering about the size, here's a scale shot with some figures (again, this is an impressive model sizewise) and some detail shots:

That is a nice model and you have painted it very nicely.
Two of them as corners and some extra similar walls would go a long way to making a massive cathedral

I was having the exact same thought when I was taking the pictures. But I already have something set aside for building a massive cathedral. ;)

Do the blades on the mill spin? If not, modifying them to do so will save a lot of fixes from minor bumps and nudges.
-
That would have involved major surgery, and is unfortuantely not very practical from the way the model is constructed.
It could have been done, but I guess I'll wait until major breakage before thinking about it now.

This is a really great thread with some wonderful stuff in it. :-*
Those Ziterdes hard foam buildings look great.
-
I just love them. Sturdy and lightweight and I don't have to worry about glue loosening. And dropping them may result in a chuffed or otherwise damaged corner perhaps, but that is still better than picking up the shards and pieces of broken resin.
-
They look great WK. I wonder if I can get these in the states?

I don't know, but if you place a large order their overseas shipping costs are pretty reasonable (and the stuff is light).

Wanted to let other US readers know that the Mirilton/Grenadier (Copplestone-sculpted) Renaissance themed Dark Elves (White Knight has a couple of pictures on his website) are now available in the U.S. from FRP Games (whom I've usually found to have good service). I put in an order Friday (which were being shipped Tuesday, due to our Labor Day Holiday). At less than $13 for a pack of 5 (pack of 4 for command groups; pack of 1 for Cold One Knghts), they are much more economical than the Wargames Foundry Revenant Elves (at 2 Elves per pack, for about $18 - albeit that includes a few cherubs too).

For Empire painters and sculptors looking for some inspiration, try a look at www.snjacobson.com for pictures of the reenactment society the School of the Renaissance Soldier and Actions of the Lowe Countries. Pretty well-done costuming, and shows them in camp life (including some good pictures of female costume among the wives and sutleresses).

It's been ages since I painted anything for this project and when my lovely wife bought me a Lemax Halloween Gatehouse for my birthday, I knew I had to make this top of my list of things to rework into a wargaming model (you know, so I can still be entitled to get toys from her in the future).

As with most Lemax buildings, this had great potential but needed a little TLC to bring it up to the standards and to remove some of the out of scale bits that tend to feature on them. I'll go into that a bit more below, but first the pictures of the finished gatehouse, which I tried to paint in order to match my earlier buildings in this project.
Some Empire dwarfs are exploring the abandoned gatehouse. Looks like it hasn't been visited in a long while and small scavengers abound, but then who lit those torches? Figures added for scale.

And a comparison between the original model and the modified and repainted one below. I removed the oversized gravestones and skeletons. I did leave one of the skeletons under the arch as it was about the right size. I also got rid of the lighting system, since it couldn't be hidden. I used some plastic bits from a Warhammer fortified mansion to cover the large whole on the side where the switch box was situated. I should have removed the torches as well, since they're a bit big and there are big gobs of hot glue attaching them to the wall, but I didn't want to lose too many of the original building's features, so I kept them on. The building also has moulded on bits of green slime oozing in places. As I didn't quite see how to make that work, I decided to flock them and turn them into overgrown bits. I also used that in a few spots to hide some of the mouldlines that couldn't be removed, the lower body of the model being a type of porcelain.

Great re-purposing into a cracking piece of fantasy scenery (as opposed to looking far too much like a toy in it's original form).
The final piece is great!
Wonderful vision.

Looks great, good job.

Nice work and good to see you back on with this lot.
It' I also got rid of the lighting system,
I am mildly disappointed.

Very cool indeed!

I considered it, but they insist on putting the cable in the middle of a wall and there is no way to change it to go down the bottom, as the material is impossible to work with.
-
I've often considered getting these type of buildings, but so far I haven't. How do you remove unwanted pieces?
-
You have to judge whether the piece looks glued on or cast integral to the model. If it's sticking out, with undercuts suggesting glued on, it's just a resin piece that can easily be removed. If it's moulded on in the porcelain type material that most of these have for the main body, then I have found no way to remove it except, in the case of this model, the gravestones that I managed to break off with a set of pliers because their form lent itself to that.
