Title: La Guerre Infernale (Old VSF Pictures)
Post by: Adam on April 01, 2010, 08:26:03 AM
(http://i773.photobucket.com/albums/yy18/AdamfromLancashire/Guerre_Infernale_No_02_Jan-Feb_1908.jpg)

I've done a search on this forum and on yahoo but can't find any other covers as big as this one. Does anyone know where I could find any? There's a page with little thumbnails of the covers with what looks like steam tanks on but I can't find them any bigger. This one of Chasseurs Alpins riding bat machines has really wetted my appetite.

If anyone knows where I could find anymore on the internet I'd be very grateful.

The illustrations are by Albert Robida who did lots of VSF styles pictures:

Also found this:

Edit: Found a couple more covers on ebay, bit smaller though

I especially like this one with the highlanders.

Wow.

Those are all stunning. According to the blog you found them on, they are a story of WW2, written before WW1 even happened! They were written in 1908.

I would love to actually hold these. I might save the pics and print them out. Stunning, simply stunning. Thankyou for this find, it will be most helpful.

I'm even having ideas for zeppelins as we speak!!!  :D

En bref : la seconde guerre mondiale écrite avant la première ; avec l'attaque et le siège de Londres par les allemands ! et le conflit entre japonais et américains !

How spooky is that?

Spooky stuff.

There was also a piece of artwork after WW1 about the treaty of Versaille, how it would fail and the children of those that fought in WW1 would have to sort it out.

Found it!

Aye, and on one cover Londoners are drowning where they took refuge underground, something that would later happen (though from a burst water main, not from a burst of the Thames):

Robida's work is gorgeous.  One of my most prized possessions is a copy of his book La guerre au vingtième siecle, but I haven't seen his art in colour before.  Great find!  Thanks for sharing.

It oddly reminds me of some War of the Worlds artwork I have seen.

Would make a wonderful reprint. It really would, there's so many fine creators of things like this that have come and gone in the blink of the eye and it is truly atrocious. Just the other day, someone showed me some work by a practitioner of fantasy imagery and they were just stunning. In a totally alien way to what fantasy is now. Far superior and far more considered. If anyone has looked at Patrick Woodroffe's work, it is in a similar ilk.  :)

Wow!

They are simply stunning.

Does anyone know any books of his works that would be worthwhile as a VSF gamer?

I'm also fairly interested in Illustration, so would love to view these from a critical angle too.

Well, a copy of Robida's La Guerre au Vingtieme Siecle (1894) set me back £200 around 20 years ago, but it's gorgeous.

More practical might be to seek out a copy of Albert Frewin's book One Hundred Years of Science Fiction Illustration 1840-1940 (1974), which contains about a dozen pages of Robida reproductions (as well as lots of other inspirational material).  It used to be impossible to visit a second-hand bookshop without tripping over copies of this, so it should be easily and chaeply available.

Any idea how integral those backpacks are? I don't think they'll be needing walking sticks when they have flying machines.  ;)

I also need to figure out how to make them seated and using a steering wheel.

Integral to the figure I think.

Your average Chasseurs Alpin wouldn't be seen dead without his walking stick!
