Title: The 11th Doctor
Post by: Gluteus Maximus on April 03, 2010, 07:42:28 PM
Well, in my most humble opinion, Matt Smith has absolutely nailed it!

Thoroughly enjoyable first episode.

Can't wait for our friends at Crooked Dice to bully Kev into getting those new figures finished  :D

I must say to my surprise I found myself taking a real liking to the new guy. Enjoyable episode too. Really drew me in.

I was able to get over my hatred of his face, and really enjoyed it. Like the new girl too..

Oh yes indeedy  ;)

And that teaser at the end  :o  So many monsters to come .... and I think I spotted a glimpse of a revamped favourite of mine from the 3rd Doc's days.

Please note I'm trying my hardest not to spoil things for our pals in the rest of the world  :)

I had mixed feelings about the sneak preview, although the highlight was being able to turn to my young lady and ask her to clarify if I had in fact just seen what looked a lot like Dalek trench warfare... and did the Daleks have little union jacks on?

(Then nipped upstairs to pre-order the crooked dice minis...)

And webbing.  I look forward to finding out how they get into the pouches.

That was great.  :)

Only thing I'm not sure about the TARDIS interior.

I was thinking about the webbing on the Daleks, my guess was it's for the people they are with, rather than for their own use.  Like alien pack mules.

Only thing I'm not sure about the TARDIS interior.

Didn't look all that different to the Eccleston/Tennant one to me.

The tardis interior has a red brothel light. And some sort of balcony. (and the console! it's brass edged! they seem to have taken it in both directions - more high tech on the flashy bits, but more nonsensical household items too...)

I did think it was a bit suspect at the end - super-old chap takes young girl into red-lit box which is bigger on the inside than the outside, and while her mind reels implants her with the suggestion that they go on a little trip... it's a little bit creepy...

loved it - Smith is great, some great gags... love the new Tardis (shades of the 1996 and the 2005 consoles)...

And that teaser at the end  :o  So many monsters to come .... and I think I spotted a glimpse of a revamped favourite of mine from the 3rd Doc's days.

yes... but 2 instead of 3...  ;) better be a bloody good reason for that...

Well, the wiki sites already have rundowns of the episodes of the series, and the whole dalek thing is already explained there since a few weeks.

What mostly amazed me is that either the BBC has won the lottery, or the Tennant era has really revitalised the series cause the sfx parts looked better then before, more `slick` like american scifi series do.

Well, and for that companion  :-*

Frankly, I'm still giddy from last night's excitement. Or feeling eight years old, which is pretty much the same thing.

Very different from the RTD era in so many ways, but spot-on in its essential Who-ness.

Utterly fabulous.

Through the magic of the internet I was able to catch the new Doctor's first adventure late last night (early morning for you guys across the pond). My fellow yanks can catch up with the rest of the world on Cast tv. Wow! I could barely sleep after that, I was so amped up!

Love Matt Smith as the new Doctor. He shows tremendous promise and he overcame my doubts almost immediately, where it took a while it took several episodes to warm up to Tennant's Doctor after Eccleston left. His new companion is quite a woman too! I'm a sucker for sexy redheads... :-*

The new theme is going to take some getting used to. I am very much looking forward to the episode with the vampire women. More inspiration to be had. I might just break down like many of you and buy the Doctor and Amy and start some Who wargaming. At least the Doctor can fit in anywhere.

Here i was, all set up to hate no. 11.

Dr Who-llyoaks as me and the missus were dubbing it.

Young pretty boy to appeal to the girlies...check.

Young pretty girl to draw in the girlies dads...check.

The missus wasn't even going to watch it, so we settled down with our grumpy heads on, ready to...

Oh...

Dear lord!

OK...calm down...

Now i always hated Tennant who SHOUTED ar random INTERVALS, and talked through HIS teeth in the hope that he might be actually ACTING...

Ecclestone was pretty good...on a par with Davidson...

But here...the 11th Doctor is SO good, its almost like Baker's back on screen.   :o

And those teasers!  Khaki daleks!!!

I think a little bit of wee came out i got so excited.
A man of my venerable years really shouldn't be getting this stimulated.
I had to have a cup of milky tea just to get my blood pressure back down.

We'll have to wait and see but i have a feeling this new Dr could well be astonishingly good...i'm certainly looking forward to this series and feel like everything since the end of Baker's reign has sort of been just treading water waiting for Matt Smith to grow up...

At least the Doctor can fit in anywhere.

This is the best thing about gaming Doctor Who.  You can use just about any models you have for it, from modern or historical minis to scifi aliens and fantasy monsters, it's all fantastic.  :)

As a bonus The Doctor changes his appearance completely from time to time so you can use any vaguely human male looking mini for him and his companions can be anyone you like.

Even the TARDIS doesn't always look like a Police Box.  So that can be anything with an opening someone could fit through.

Watched it again last night and it is still as good as the first time. There are the obvious Who plot-holes, but then it wouldn't be the same without them  :D

My 10 year old and his cousin were determined to hate Matt Smith but both were absoloutely bowled over.

What a re-boot!  ;D

Yeah that's exactly my problem, and unfortunately danish TV doesn't seem to know a good series when even if it came and hit it over the head! The showed Eccleston's Dr Who late at night and then said, well no body saw it so we're not interested....go figure

Does anyone here know if the first episode is repeated on any of the BBC stations before the next episode airs?  Or even at all?

For various reasons I cant get at BBC player, so that isnt a solution for me.

Any ideas?

BBC 3 showed it again on Sunday, last series run, BBC 3 would also show it on the Friday before the next episode... but no idea if this is the case this run...

EDIT:

OK - a little late to the party but just watched the new Who - Briillliant!!

Loved the hot and cold taps on the TARDIS console!

Totally second all that's been said so far - Smith's ace, need to find my wife a police outfit like that, and the khaki Daleks look pretty cool too.

Vampire women reminded me a little of the Curse of Fenric?

Not sure I saw anything that looked Silurians though - might have been blinking back tears of joy at the time though!  lol

mmm Great Vampires....  o_o

Hope they haven't messed with the old Earth Reptiles though - at the risk of being too purist...  >:D

Enjoyed the old shot of the Sea Devil though - God I'm sad!

Did I also notice the lady who was blown out of the airlock and into the TARDIS was the same one from the Library - the one who recognised the Doctor from the future - can't for the life of me remember her name - sure she's someone famous too!  ;D

I initially thought "Silurians", but on going back and doing a slo-mo search, the single frame we are shown of them are maybe not Silurians after all. No "third eye" amongst other things  :?

Maybe a brand new monster instead? And I was so excited about their return  :'(

As if I could be in any way unhappy about the return of the Doctor  lol

popular opinion has it, they are Silurians... and there is now an expanded universe thing of the Silurians being master geneticist and always tinkering with stuff (hence the Myrka and the differnce in appearance from Pertwee to Davison)... but.... I don't know about these ones...

an actor blew it and annouced she'd been cast as twin Silurians in a two parter - and then said that although she's made up, she's still recognisable as her, which fits the lizardy woman in the clip with human features next to a full face mask lizardy type... I;m sure the Moff will fluff it away nicely.... but the full face mask with the crests and the eye was a great design and will be sorely missed...

Yes, very true. I like the re-imagined Daleks, Cybermen and Sontarans which RTD managed to do a good job with. After all, the Cyberman have had many changes over the years, but still remained instantly recognizable, as were the new Daleks and Sontarans. Making such a major change to the Silurians in what is quite an iconic image could be the Moff's first faux-pas.

I sincerely hope not  :?

I'd heard they were from a seperate tribe.

Love them as monsters, but Warriors of the Deep served them very badly. Watched it again over the weekend. The redesigns in that were nice, but I think a 2010 update won't do any harm. I think they appear quite late in the season.

BTW - have you seen that the cybermen in the new online adventure game announced today. Same design, but a different logo on the chest (not Cybus).

And while we are at it, what's going on with the shed in Amy Pond's garden? It was destroyed but rebuilt itself to 'look like it was 12 years old'. Am I missing or not getting something?

Just watched it yesterday (all I'll say, as someone outside the UK, is *cough**cough*torrent*cough*...oh sorry, coughing fit) and it was fantastic. I was really, really having a lot of misgivings when the first trailers came out but I must say everything about The 11th Hour was FANTASTIC! Made me feel like I was 7 years old again and seeing Who on PBS for the first time!

And, I'm digging the new Tardis. Let's hope we see more of its many many rooms....

Unfortunatly I so far have been unable to get over Matt Smith's face and lack of abillity to show emotion with it.

The writing was great, the girl playing the assistant is fantastic, cute but also a very good actress, maybe a little too much CGI but that's kinda normal when theres an alien like that in the show.

The Doctor though, it just kept coming back to him. The lines were good but I just didn't feel or see the emotion from the actor in his bodylanguage or facial expressions.

To me he just seemed almost permenantly locked into :-I.

I think I'll probably watch it cause I want to see the Assistant's Story, but unless Smith improves he'll be an annoyance to struggle against for me.

He had me after "it must be one 'ell of a scary crack in your wall."

It's only the first episode - and there was a lot to do - but I'm pretty hopeful.

I agree. I mean Eccleston didn't have any real range of emotion either and he grew on me.

I especially like his "Is this planet protected?" speech to the Attraxi at the end

"Basically.....run."

Hmm, not really agreeing on the Ecclestone comment though, I really, really liked him as the Doctor, and he had both that sad face he usually uses, the bright smile where you think his ears will start flapping and the most intense show of emotion (I believe so) is when he encounters teh Dalek in Utah, and spit and all flies from his mouth when shooting into a rage

Is the knackered old Cyberman in the trailer wearing this logo, or the usual one?

The Doctor Who forums have been alive with the sound of people with far too much time on their hands complaining that the cybermen in the trailer are new, ie parallel Earth 'Cybusmen', rather than old-school Who-continuity cybermen (despite the fact that the old cybermen had terrible continuity). But then they've been getting themselves excited about the fact that the trailer implies that the action takes place in some sort of 'tomb'. And since Matt Smith is channelling Patrick Troughton, it's been all 'Oh, Tomb of the Cybermen'! But as to whether it's Telos, Mondas or Billie Piper's alternate workd, frankly I couldn't give tuppence!

There are a lot of geeks in the gaming word, but the online Who community is scarily insane at times.
