Title: Burma - The Forgotten War
Post by: Prof.Witchheimer on May 31, 2007, 01:09:39 PM
I have to admit, matakishi's talking-about-Burma was contagious. Really contagious. Hmm...now I had a think and realized that God wants that I make a Burma project. And you know, if God wants something you better do it. I will do it. Because Burma is wonderfull. Burma means lots of armies and uniforms. Vehicles and support things. Burma is exotic and apart from them I have lots of beautiful jungles made by Grimm. And so on.

Currently I'm in the planinng and have some questions about suitable miniatures, namely...

1) Are the Artizan British Commonwealth forces suitable for Burma?
2) Do the the Foundry and TAG Chindits work well together?
3) Are there any Chinese WW2 miniatures out there?
4) Makes anyone Ghurkhas (except from TAG)?
5) Are there any figs for Indian National army?

actually I have a couple more questions but that's enough for the start :-)

The Artizan Australians and Sikhs are fine but all their British stuff isn't.

The Foundry figures should be ok with the TAG figures, but I don't have any Foundry Chindits to be sure. The Perry Germans are a little snaller than the BTD Germans but still work alright, and the BTD figures work with TAG.

No Idea about Chinese, probably not though.

I've only seen WWII Ghurkas from TAG, there are Foundry Ghurkas but they're colonial era ones.

Again, I don't think so. You could probably use some Copplestone figures from his BoB range if you didn't care too much that their equipement is a bit early. He does Ghurkas too I see.

Battle Honours WWII probably cover the ranges but their figures are not always good and most of their ranges of different troops from a single nation are the same figures with different heads. Their figures are also quite small.

I think Old Glory 15's has a squad pack of Ghurka's in their Battle Honors line.  (Or at least my FLGS has one that I have contemplated purchasing.)  I have the squad pack of Bersaglieri (10 figures) and it includes 2 smgs and one lmg w/asst gunner. The rest, including the LMG asst are armed with rifles

The Battle Honors line are "true 25" and are thinner and slighter  than the Artizan and  Copplestone, but that is not an issue for me in the least.

And, "they paint up good"

I suppose they'd do. They're wearing the wrong uniform but at 28mm paint should sort that out.

I might get some myself.

The only WW2 Gurkhas I know are from TAG.  Would be interested to see if anyone knows if there is an alternative range.

My interest in this theatre is more in the earlier part - Fall of Singapore and all that.  Different uniforms for this period.  Generally similar to 8th Army, but neater than the Artizan guys.

BTW - there is an excellent memoir by John Masters called "The Road to Mandalay".  It recounts his experiences first as Brigade Major, then Brigade Commander of a Chindit Brigade.  After extraction, he is appointed Divisional second in command to a regular Army unit for the 1944 invasion of Burma.

Very well written, and captures very nicely the flavour of the period.

He looks good. I'm using Foundry storm green for mine. I initially went with a similar colour for the webbing which was darker than western front webbing but I've decided to stay with drab like the rest of my British for a bit of contrast.
(You know my views on WWII uniform colours    )

When I look at various WWII Pacific Theatre flicks (Thin Red Line, Flag of Our Fathers, The Bridge over the River Kwai..." and the few colour photographs I have (Time Life series) it loogs to me like they are wearing a pretty solid jungle green faded to grey green.

As always I think it is the "faded" part that is hardest to capture but you are close.

If you're after aircraft for Burma then I'd go for a Hurricane. Airfix do (did?) a nice sturdy kit in 1/48 although if was a Mark I not a Mark II. You can probably pick one up on ebay.

And if you're doing Burma, especially the Arakan, you can't leave out a Lee/Grant!  I'm sure Solido do one although it'll probably cost you a fortune to get hold of one.

I think you're Chindit is spot on BTW...just the right degree of fade on the battledress. Excellent!

The Road Past Mandalay is actually part 2 of his memoirs.  Part one is also quite interesting and covers his training at Sandhurst, his experiences as a Gurkha officer, and his first taste of combat against Afghan insurgents (Waziris and Pathans) in the NW Frontier:

I recently bought a couple of 1.48 Tamiya M4 Shermans and a Hobbyboss M4A1 76mm from traders on ebay, saving half the shop price on the Tamiya kits.

They're really nice models with die cast hulls to add weight. Next to the Corgi 1/50 Sherman and M3 Half tracks I also bought, they should look compatible.

They have the advantage that they can be built up as a unit. I've bought some decals for a Sherman platoon from Company B so I'll be using them instead of the kit decals. I'm using them as armoured support for my Artizan US armoured infantry platoon.

When they're done I'll post some photos.

Tamaya tank kits are crazy expensive though. I suspect it is the die-cast hull which jacks up the price to a level where a 1/48 kit costs as much as a 1/35 kit.

I am no panzer wargamer, I use them mostly for props so I am not willing to pay that much for them.

Hi all,
I have 2 Tamiya 1/48 Sherman kits - brand new, unbuilt - to sell.
EUR 15 each.  EUR 5 postage within Germany.

What I like about the Tamiya kits is that the front part of the hull is accurate for the M4A4 (Sherman V) giving it the perfect look for NW Europe 1944.

US tank platoons consisted of five tanks on paper whilst British troops consisted of three and sometimes four. I've got four Shermans but will use one ot two per game as support for the infantry otherwise things might get a bit too armour heavy. I guess this is more realistic anyway given mechanical breakdown, losses in combat etc etc.

My Germans for instance have only got one Hetzer, another Tamiya kit, reflecting the lack of armour support available to them in '44 and '45. I have been reading the Osprey books on the Rhine and Siegfried Line battles in late 1944, and sometimes an entire panzer regiment was down to maybe half a dozen assorted barely operational tanks!

That's a great deal dominic!

If you try ebay for kits then you can usually save quite a bit on the shop price of the kits. My Shermans were £7.50 + £2.50 postage which is half the price of the kit in my local model shop (£19.99). I think this compares well with the cost of the Corgi 1/50 scale ready made tanks which usually go for around £10 on ebay. The Hooby boss ones are a bit more expensive, but they're so cool!

Ok you Burma nuts...

I can sort of confirm that the CompanyB/JT Enterprises M3 Lee (with modified turret for Burma) and the Grant will debut at Historicon in July 2007.

In any case, I'll have samples in my hand by then.  For those who really want to pre-order this, you can send me an e-mail.

I can also say, that Burma is the next wave of miniatures we are producing (for those that didn't know...company B is also 50%  responsible for all the Japanese and Marine minis for Brigades PacWar line.  So we are in negotiations right now to get the Burma line going.  The probable sculptor for the Aussies will be known to most of you..as he's in Australia!  Matakishi and Helen, please keep mum! I've said enough already!

That said...

Would there be any interest in the specific M3 Stuarts that the Aussies converted for Asia?  We were assuming folks would be using the current line...but there were some significant changes to the turret.  Not sure if a new model is warranted though  (but perhaps I could just sculpt the turret would be good as an alternate part...)

Also, 1:56 versions of the Dodge Weapons carrier have been commissioned.  So you folks stuck with the massive 1:43 Corgi ones can sell them!

If there is any other gear that needs consideration, let me know!

Awesome sounding stuff! I think the alternate turret is best.
