Title: Under the Black Flag (and more) now available
Post by: Operator5 on June 01, 2007, 01:54:22 AM
Under the Black Flag is the first supplement to the Gloire rules, and it covers swashbuckling pirate adventure in the Caribbean in the golden age of the buccaneers.

The book includes rules for creating campaigns of linked games, which will allow players to advance their model’s skills and abilities. Rules are also included for sailing and boarding ships, so players can swing from the rigging as they take galleons loaded with gold, or fire a broadside from a pirate sloop. Almost two dozen new character archetypes are introduced, as well as new abilities and skills. Seven scenarios round out the book-tales of treasure buried hastily on desert islands, mutinies, and divided loot gone amiss.

Sharpen your cutlass and prime your pistol, for we leave the world of the kings’ laws and sail Under the Black Flag!

Under the Black Flag is 88 pages and retails for $18.00.

I read this title and thought you must be talking about the anarchists! Pirates weren't the only ones who fought under a black flag! Still, pirates are interesting, maybe I will check it out :)

Is it a stand alone set of rules or do you need Gloire to play?

The nice thing about it is that it is a supplement for Gloire, but if you download the free demo version of the Gloire rules, you should be able to play no problem.

That is good news, I'd kinda written off this game as I'd need to buy two books for it.

Under The Black Flag goes back on the list.  :)

Thanks, guys! Yes, you really only need the demo rules to round out the game, but if you already own Gloire, you'll find rules for character advancement very similar to the ones in "Gargoyle: Death Soldiers of the Jade Hood."

Also, if you haven't downloaded it yet, there's a character sheet for Captain Jack, based off a certain wily buccaneer in some recent movies.

Download Captain Jack's character sheet. (PDF link) (http://www.rattrap-productions.com/Gloire/Downloads/Characters/PirateCaptain.pdf)

Being in London, I would suggest checking with North Star or one of the stores they or Tabletop Games distribute to.

I think we might actually have better coverage in the UK than we do in the US.  :?

I think I'll just order it directly from the source (thus putting the full funds into the company creating the stuff) - but it'll have to wait 'til a couple of additional books for .45A are ready. And 'til I'm actually working on hobby projects again  :freak:

Edit: I've got to play some games soon, so I can get some new quotes for my signature

As "Under the Black Flag" is in a line of a song from a Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta, are there rules for the entire ensemble bursting into song for no apparent reason in the middle of a game?

There should be.

For I am a Pirate King!
And it is, it is
A glorious thing
To be a Pirate King!

And remember, Pirate Kings are not allowed to harm orphans.

I quite fancy the look of these, how do the ship to ship rules work? are there rules for guns etc.

I have .45 and know it is for small scale skirmish how do the pirate crews work?

Are the ship profiles OG (big beasties - I have their 40 gun Man O`war you see) or Flagship games - little tiddlers?

Questions Questions I know :D

I'm sure Pete will pop in here with more details, but Pirate ships are given three stats. Handling, Boarding, and Broadside. The rules cover the last few minutes before the boarding action. You won't have ships cicling each other. You'll get a few broadsides as they attempt to close so crews can board one another. Certain archetypes and skills will help your attempt.

The big OG ship would have the 10 broadside and 3 Handling.

Thanks operator :) that sounds good, a ratio is what I want, As I have 4 little ships and the big boy I only want to represent the attack perhaps with as you say the initial broadside or passing shot etc, otherwise my pirates in cutters and sloops would not stand a chance :D

It was a busy weekend*. Sorry for not ringing in sooner.

As Rich said, each ship has three stats: Broadside, Handling, and Boarding. There are template stats for the major classes of ship, and you can further refine your ship, trading off one stat for another.

In the few tests I've done, smaller ships can take larger ships, though you'd better have a good helmsman (to improve your Handling) and better hope your opponent doesn't get too many hard hits in.

Without going into too many details, the ship manuevering and firing works a bit like the rest of the mechanics of the game: d10 + stat + modifiers compared to your opponent's d10 + stat + modifiers.

*: Not that busy. I spent the weekend cowering in fear of Teenage Rockabilly Grimm.
