Title: The Magnificent Sven
Post by: Thantsants on April 15, 2010, 04:39:03 PM
Thought I'd start a new topic for this one before I become too distracted and forget about Orc's Drift!!  ::)

Talking of the other old scenarios - recently picked up The Magnificent Svenn scenario as well as Svenn himself on ebay - noticed I already had Juggo Jorikson and a couple of Slann from other job lots so thought it was worth a punt!

Don't know much about it but it looks like a nice skirmish sized game judging from the card characters listed on stuff of legends -

http://www.solegends.com/citscenarios/svenf-01.htm

Mind you if the Slann Warhound costs this much...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Citadel-Svenn-scenario-pack-Slann-Warhound-very-rare_W0QQitemZ350338726106QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Toys_Wargames_RL?hash=item5191d0b8da

Think Otherworld do some nice giant lizards which might work well instead...

Your going to need to pick up 2nd edition and ravening hoards to make the collection complete, they were going for bargain basement prices when I go mine a few years back.

I've got Ravening Hordes - the one with the Christos Achilleos illustration of a ravening orc horde lined up along a ridge. Will have to keep an eye out for 2nd ed.

Are there rules/stats in them I'll need for the campaign?

Anyone know of any sites with actual pics of the minis other than stuff of legends?

You shouldn't need Ravening Hordes but you will need the rulebooks from 2nd Ed. If you have other editions you can maybe fudge it, but the basic info on how WHII works is in three books called 'Bestiary' (this includes stats for everything including humanoid creatures), 'Magic' (which is both spells and magic items) and 'Combat' which includes turns and movement as well as missile and melee combat.

If you get a decent boxed copy of 2nd eddition it should have a citadel flyer with pictures of the minis. Also a set of cardboard minis if you get stuck, hmmm, I'm sure it would be wrong to scan them.....

Yes a heinous crime!   >:( ;D

Think I'll drive myself mad searching ebay for the minis and use proxies where I can't afford silly prices - much like Orc's Drift - which I must finish first!  ::)

Rules wise, as for Orc's Drift, thought I'd fudge 3rd ed. rules, or even SOBH.

Well thought I'd paint up the inspiration for my purchase of this scenario while I wait for it to come through the post - Juggo Jorikson!

As I know very little about the characters and plot apart from it involving a steam powered paddle boat, high tech equipment, the Slann  >:D, and is obviously set in Lustria, I'll shut up and show some pics...

Haven't forgotten about Orc's Drift - Juggo will be making an appearance at Ashak Rise with the rest of the gold diggers!

Juggo is a character in McDeath. :?

Not the mini, just the name, a dwarf bodyguard for Julia McEwman.

Oh fair enough - just going off a Collecting Citadel minis entry - thought it was odd that Riolta Snow was included...  :?

Anyone any ideas what this dwarf is called?!   ;D

Spose I'll find out when the goodies get through the post...

Ok, always great stuff.
Talk to us about these cutie little scenery piece you have floating around all your pics.
Is there another thread with pics of your scenery? If not there should be!
I would really love to see some pics and quick how to on those little bases with clump foliage on them.
Thanks
As always, Inspiring.

Cheers Bill - no thread dedicated to scenery I'm afraid but loads of pics in my nasty orcses and Orc's Drift threads if you haven't seen them...

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=15177.0

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=17333.0

The bigger bits are all from Amera, including the ruined temple in this thread - nice cheap vacuum formed scenery - not terribly detailed but you can add stuff yourself - good stuff in both Fantasy and Future sections -

http://www.amera.co.uk/

Trees are the Woodlands Scenics realistic tree kits - wire and plastic armatures that paint up nicely and loads of clump foliage which you stick on.

The little bases are dead easy and were actually made as an afterthought after I'd done a few trees to bulk out the area my woods would cover on the table and make them look a little more realistic!

I had some odd shapes of plasticard left from basing the trees so just painted them brown, added a couple of tones of static grass and some earth scatter (think it was called this? From Antenociti's Workshop). Once that was dry I glued on some clump foliage - various colours, a few twigs for logs, bit of lichen and some long straw coloured grass in clumps - Bob's your uncle!

I only ever made about 6 pieces so just shows how versatile they can be!  :D

Need to order some more plasticard and finish off the rest of the trees at some point so might get round to some how to photos at some point in the next month or so if you'd like - meantime I can always get a few closer pics tomorrow at a more sociable hour!

Pictures of the Magnificent Svenn figures are on the CCM wiki here (http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/Scenarios)

Rules wise, as for Orc's Drift, thought I'd fudge 3rd ed. rules, or even SOBH.
I'd download and use Mordheim from GW's website if I were you.

The Magnificent Svenn is a great scenario though, as I recall, is does need a lot of villagers. The other dwarf is called Juggo Joriksson and Riolta Snow does indeed make an appearance.

P.S. Inspiring stuff, these old lead threads! Keep up the good work.

Thanks Citisen!

Already got Mordheim downloaded - will give them a read...

Happy Days - Riolta is also wending her way through the post as we speak!

So this dwarf is Juggo? I'd gone with the CCM ID originally... Is it a case of mistaken identity or characters cropping up in different scenarios?!  ???

Should have a fairly sizeable militia once I'm done with Orc's Drift - hopefully they can stand in for the villagers in this scenario  :D
Title: Re: The Magnificent Sven
Post by: Red Orc on April 16, 2010, 03:14:28 PM
Yup that Dwarf is Juggo. It says it on his base (at least it does on mine).

I think probably it's supposed to be the same Dwarf as in McDeath - perhaps after the events of McDeath he goes to Lustria with the Norse Dwarf colony? At this period the background wasn't fully worked out, it's only later in the development of the game mythology that the Norse become Chaos Worshippers and the Norse Dwarfs sort of disappear.

Apologies for the threadomancy but I figured I may as well carry this thread on as start a new one.

Got a few updates on this little side project to my current wrestling with Orc's Drift...  ;D

Thanks to the LPL I found myself irresistibly drawn to the Magnificent Sven minis I have slowly been amassing in between buying up Orcs on ebay. As I figured these chaps would do better than hordes of painted rank and file troops from Orc's Drift they got bumped up to the top of the paint queue!  :D

Anyways - here's the pics (including Juggo who I started this thread off with, and Aygar Mistletaine who is moonlighting as the Mad Hermit in the Linden Way scenario from Orc's Drift!)

Odd.... I thought I posted here earlier. Hm?! Oh well... great additions to the ever growing collection of Svenn stuff! =)

Funny factoid... I've painted my Aygal just like yours, except the blue and purple are switched around. Odd, it wasn't a conscious decision to copy you. Sublime manipulation of my psyche, Steve... I'd better put on my tinfoil hat, lest my orcs will be painted green!  o_o

So, am I wrong about your Dwarf being Juggo Joriksson?  I'm certain the Dwarf you have is Juggo, and I'm sure I have one. I could be wrong, it has been known. I'm going up to my loft to have a look now.

The whole Svenn set is looking very very lovely!

EDIT: right, I've gone and checked and the mini I have, the same as that Dwarf with the axe and the bushy beard, is labelled 'Juggo' on his tab. Glad I'm not losing it...

o_o Phreedh - paint your Orcs lime green like an 80's Ford Capri, oh and send me all your Orc's Drift scenario characters - especially the ones I don't have...  o_o

Damn your tinfoil hat - foiled again...  ;D  lol

Thanks all - really chuffed with how they turned out, although Riolta and one or two others look a bit pasty in the flesh - might remedy that if I ever have time. Just need to find a Karl Ustracutter for completeness sake...  :D

Can't wait to get stuck into the rest of my Slann  but I am going to have to be a bit more disciplined and stick to Orc's Drift if I'm ever to finish it!

That and I will need large numbers of villagers, about 30 more Slann warriors and a scratch-built alcohol powered paddleboat, not to mention a load of jungle scenery to do the scenario justice on the table-top!  :o

May scale this down to skirmish size when I get round to it...

Red Orc - always nice to reaffirm your sanity!  :D

Think I'm done for now LeadAsbestos  :D - it's 1980's gobbo's that seem to be catching my eye at the mo'! That and I got a bit of a ticking off the last time I had a blowout on Slann - not a lot of lead for quite a few quid! Mind you the missus really liked the blue one so I think I'm out of the doghouse for now...

Erny - same problem - I only have three...

oh dear there I go again!  >:D

As for the anklebiters - we've got them quite well trained now and they know the routine - in bed for 7pm and land of nod shortly after!

Cheers Buddy - this may enlighten you a little from my blog - sorry for the oodles of text!  o_o

The storyline is lifted pretty much from the Magnificent Seven film -

Approached by a desperate old man as he sits drinking in the Packet Inn, in the Lustrian Norse settlement of Iquitos, Sven agrees to set out with what recruits he can find on board his boat to free the town of Vastervik from the cruel yoke of a large rengade Slann warband, under the leadership of the jungle desperado, Gurggl Greenwake.

Starring...

Sven Hasslefriesian, Juggo Joriksonn and the Halfling stowaway. Raidocks Timmowit

Sven was once a member of the Engineers Guild but was expelled for his outrageous ideas of alcohol vapour powered boats (Dwarfs distrust rivers, the sea and anything to do with them). Having emigrated to Lustria to escape the mockery of his fellow Dwarfs, following the humiliation of the "Trouser Legs" ceremony at the hands of the Guild, Sven made his dream reality by building his alcohol powered paddle boat. He named it the Voltsvagn after his Mother and made a fortune operating it as a ferry for the various Norse settlements that had sprung up along the banks of the great Amoco river. Now almost respectable he has become bored and itches for a new adventure.

Juggo "Senseless" Jorikonn, a Norse Dwarf Berserker, is so named for the year and a half long drinking binge he went on having returned as the sole survivor of an ill-fated raid on the Slann Empire. As the once substantial hoard of Slann gold he floated back down the river with has now long since gone, he has been working aboard the Voltsvagn for Sven.

Raidocks Timmowit ran away from home in search of fame and fortune in the fabled jungles of Lustria. In fact all he found was that a fool and his money, most of his belongings and even his clothes (which were far too small to fit anyone anyway!) are easily parted through a combination of gambling, theft and carelessness! He has been washing dishes at the Packet Inn at Iquitos (claiming to be a catering manager in his letters home) until he sees his opportunity to change his fortunes by stowing away on Sven's ship.

Karl Ustracutter and Aygar Mistletaine

Karl Ustracutter (not the original mini - and I didn't really want to cut one his legs off!) is one of the many Norse adventurers who have come to plunder the rich Slann Empire. He had thought his adventuring days were over after his last disastrous escapade, searching for a fantastical Pygmy temple, deep in the jungle. His raiding party was ambushed by no less than a confederation of six Pygmy tribes. Having been captured, he was forced to look on as the remnants of his hearty band were taken one by one to become hearty meals... Eventually after many escape attempts his turn came. However, by then the Pygmy chief had come to rather like him, impressed as he was by Ustracutter's pluck and refusal to grovel. Early in the morning he was taken out and clubbed - coming round later that night he found himself the guest of honour in a feast celebrating his release. Still drowsy he accepted a mug of beer and a chunk of meat from a suspiciously long joint, but curious as to the source of the dull ache in his left leg and an apparent inability to move the limb, he looked under the table - and passed out again when he saw it had gone! Recruited by Sven, Ustracutter is sure there is at least one adventure left in him...

Aygar Mistletaine is the oldest Lustrian born Norseman alive on the continent. His adventuring career had apparently come to an end twenty years ago - when he was fifty. Trapped in a tiny catacomb for two years by a Slann trap, he kept himself alive by collecting water drips and using a "pull a fish from hat" spell, taught to him by an Iquitos fishmonger. Unable to free himself he managed to alert another Norse raiding party with his knocking. After giving his rescuers half his fortune, he became a recluse, advancing his studies of magic - some say his mind and nerves snapped because of his ordeal - Sven can't afford to be choosy with the slim pickings available in Iquitos for his expedition..

Riolta Snow and Kara Lakota

Riolta makes her living as a professional tournament archer, holding the titles of many of the Elf Kingdom's most prestigious contests. Like many other successful "pros" she is alarmingly rich. She is currently holidaying in Lustria and as a female and a Sea Elf she has been allowed to travel freely in Amazonia. Lately she has hired the Voltsvagn for a hunting trip up the river - so far she has bagged several crocodiles, a giant turtle and a brace of Slann. Sven, Juggo and especially Kara were all highly impressed! Sven has even managed to persuade her to go with him on his latest escapade.

Kara is an Amazon whose whole life has been a tale of rebellion, intransigence and laziness. Shipped off to become a sister with the Kalim Devouts at the age of 25, Kara soon came into conflict with her superiors - making her already arduous and exhaustng life more miserable. Eventually she was contacted by an underground subversive Kalimist organisation and recruited into a plot to blow the Amazon Queen up as she visited the venerated Riggs Shrine. However, the plot was uncovered and Kara was forced to flee - after she had stolen a Bolt pistol and several magazines. She wound up in Iquitos but hates it, the Norse and their chauvinistic ways. She has been hired as the guard on Sven's boat.

WOW!! This is a wondeful project!  :o

Back in the old days, it was the very first game my group played, and what got us hooked in skirmish miniature wargaming! Note that I said skirmish because it was that way aeons ago, not massive battles with tons of expensive models...

We played "The Magnificent Sven" with the original citadel figures for the heroes (unpainted!) but, as we don't have any slann, used the same number of orcs (70!) instead! (the same orcs were used later for "Bloodbath At Orc's Drift"). A few months later, Riolta Snow again saved the day in the final battle of "Terror of the Lichemaster", killing Kemmler with an enchanted arrow thought his cold, necromantic heart...   8)

(and yes, we're planning an RELOADED version of TOTL for 2012... using a massive horde of Mantic undead miniatures!)

P.S. I strongly support the idea that Juggo was the basis for the "dwarf slayer" concept in Warhammer!

Cheers Dino - nearly done with my Orc's Drift project so subject to my willpower staying the course this will be my next focus.

As I too don't have 70 Slaan lying round (about 17 I think!) I'm thinking of doing a follow-up to the Magnificent Sven scenario - no firm details yet but it may well take inspiration and some terrible puns from other famous Westerns, maybe even Apocalypse Now...  ;)

I'm thinking along the lines of Sven and the survivors of the defense of Vastervik (not many!) making good their escape from the Slaan, stumbling across Amazon temples and their defenders (got around 10 of the old C series Amazons off ebay) and many other jungle nasties... Maybe even bumping into Kremlo?  :D

Looking forward to seeing your take on Lichemaster!

Rise from your grave thread...  >:D

Now I've got a few bits and pieces done through this year's LPL thought I'd resurrect this old thread.

I haven't forgotten Orc's Drift (if you were following that project), and now I have two weeks hols I'm keen to write up the last battle report for it.

In the mean time here's a few of my past LPL entries that make up part of the Slann forces that will be appearing in...

... Return of the Magnificent Sven!

Slann warriors and one of the Cold One Riders

Slann scouts, albino slavemaster and human lobotomised slaves -

To come - Norse berserkers and the original Karl Ustracutter, who makes up the full set of Magnificent Sven characters.  :D
Also got a load of citadel Amazons, giant spiders, scorpions, creepy crawlies and carnivorous birds - not to mention the Otherworld nasties lurking in the paint queue.

That looks great - cheers for the tip!

Amazons might have to wait a week or two - just painting up some of your Sea Demons at the mo...  ;)

Looking forward to seeing the Sea Demons and Amazons too.

Ooooh!
Are you getting ready for this old classic now?
What a great idea- Using the LPl to give you a kick up the Jacksie, very clever!
You have had some lovely Slann-themed entries, looking forward to more.

Eagerly awaiting the final battle at the Drift, too.

And I'm still curious about your Kremlo ;)

Thanks Mason - I definitely needed a bit of a kickstart and the LPL is certainly a hard taskmaster!

Pil - Kremlo may well still make an appearance in the LPL  ;) and I've a few ideas of how to shoe-horn him into one of the scenarios I'm cooking up for Return of the Magnificent Sven!

I hope my scenery will be up to scratch for you Southheaven! Depending how quick I get the minis done I hope to make a start on it all in the summer...

That scenario was my first proper game of Warhammer - then my mate joined the army and nicked my rulebooks (the git). I always loved the Slann and the way you have painted them makes me love them even more. Excellent work on the slave warriors and can't wait to see what you have done with the Amazons and the rest.

Manic miner's got some solid based slann up for sale currently.

Blimey I remember getting the flyer through for these, plus Blood on the Reik. Shouldn't bought them for the silly money they were back in the day rbh.

Good luck finding all you need mate.

Thanks Commander - pretty much got all the minis I need now. Just the ones I want left to get!  ;)

I figured the 70 odd Slann required for the original scenario might be a little rough on my wallet so this will be a bit of a sequel to the original scenario. As well as a modest sized Slann warband there will be Amazons and all kinds of jungle nasties lurking around...

Thanks for the tip - Manic also mentioned that I should pay a trip to Graham's Workshop (was Gateshead Gaming) for some Slann goodies, shame its a bit far though.

Thanks chaps - think I've said it before but I'm really enjoying not painting Orcs (no offense to the green ones!) for a change. Lots of scope for being a bit more colourful and mucking around with freehand stuff, even if  I did go a little mad with the stripes!

Raided the display cabinet the other day and realised I have quite a little band of Norsemen so might have to see if I can get a bigger group shot in between painting madly for round 10 in the LPL...

Right, tonight is ladies night and. courtesy of LPL season 6, may I present to you the Amazons of Lustria performing - Death by Snu-Snu!

As I drag myself into the 10th weary round of the LPL I am left feeling somewhat akin to Futurama's premier Starship captain and lounge-lizard, Zap Brannigan, after his own bruising encounter with giant Amazons...

Quote
We need rest. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is spongy and bruised.

Anyway back to Lustria and Return of  the Magnificent Sven, or Magnificent Sven Rides Again - not sure which title to go with yet.

The Amazons are going to be another major faction in the scenario, along with Sven and his Norse adventurers and Gurg'll Greenwake and the Slann renegades who survived the siege of Vastervik. I'll be using elements and possibly (depending on my architechtural and building skills  :o) floorplans from the Rigg's Shrine scenario from the second Citadel Compendium to seamlessly weave the Amazons into the storyline I have planned for Sven and his plucky band...

Anyway here's the pics -

Koka Kalim - religious zealots and fanatical worshippers of Rigg, Amazon Goddess of War. The narcotic Koka is an important part of their religious observances and they are constantly within its grip. Deprived of normal. Deprived of normal sensory functions they can overcome great pain and have little aversion to blood, slaughter or death. Their state of mind meks them very edgy, unpredictable, irrational and strung out. They make ideal fanatic warriors.

Great stuff. For me this is the heyday of miniatures. I have a bunch of the Amazons bought when they first came out.....only ever painted one and that was in oils at the time...sold it for beer money back then. From what I remember it was a really nice PJ as well  :'(

I don't doubt it - hope the beer was good too!  :D

This is all a bit before my time and as odd as borrowed nostalgia is I'm enjoying it - even gone as far as tracking down an old copy of the second Citadel Compendium - reasoning being that if I'm going to game it i don't want to be referring back to a computer screen to look it up online mid dice roll.  ::)

Funnily enough, I decided today that I was going to restart my Amazons project that stalled in about 1987.

Seeing the paint jobs you've done on yours however has convinced me instead I should hide them away and never let them see how lovely their sisters can look with a fantastic paintjob, instead of the botched, ineffective blobbings and sloshings that mine have!

Really wonderful, I can only hope that my efforts eventually look a quater as good as these.

Anyway please forgive me for posting a load of links to my blog but its a bit of a faff copying it over and slotting the pics back in and time is a bit of a premium at the mo...

Title: Re: The Magnificent Sven
Post by: Thantsants on June 26, 2012, 09:21:40 PM
Thanks chaps - its definitely about time that I pulled my finger out and got on with a few things - the puppy is definitely to blame, who could resist a face like that, as you quite rightly put it Deafnala!

Andy - we were going to look at some Fox reds - then we met Kipling!

As for the Slann, I'm eyeing up the Cold One Warhounds and handler as my next victim on the painting table. after that, off the top of my head, there's 5 Cold One Riders, about 16 Slann warriors, a few more blowpipe Slann Braves, 12 or so of Karnac's Lizardman archers and Karnac himself (got my eyes out still for the rest of the command) 9 or so of the little Tom Meier lizardmen, one of his troglodytes, 2 Lizardmen Cold One riders and a few more of the Karnac type lizardmen warriors with hand weapons.

Then there's the 20 or so Norse warriors, including most of the Kremlo scenario guys (still after the Huscarl with 2 handed axe and shield on his back), 10 berserkers and some of the female Barbarian warriors who might be fun to use as Valkyries who have been chucked out of Norse settlements for being too fierce for the menfolk to deal with.

Still got quite a few Amazons to get done too...

Ah well, if I can get through my school report writing the summer hols are not far away!  o_o

I'd love to see more of your Amazons, and I promise I will get round to showing you some of mine soon. They're really not as nicely done as yours.

Nice to know that Karnak's Lizard Raiders are getting some loving; I'm a big fan of the old Regiments of Renown, and the fluff that used to exist prior to 3rd Ed (when Lizards, not Rats, lived under the Dwarf Cities of the World's Edge Mountains). Many's the time we used to play crazy 2nd Ed games where Elves, Dwarves, Halflings and Humans fought Goblins, Lizards, Dark Elves and Undead over the Diningtable Plains...

That sounds like fun Red Orc - I too prefer the idea of nasty things like lizardmen lurking under the old Dwarf cities. I'll have to suspend that idea a bit to transport Karnac and his boys to Lustria mind!  ;)

I'll keep my eyes for your take on the Amazons.

No worries there Phreedh - Bran was a little put out at first but he soon came round. It warms the cockles of the heart to watch them taking turns to chase each other round the garden now!

Not exactly mini related I know, but couldn't resist!

As I said already, not a quarter as nice as yours, but, here they are anyway.

I guess it must be. I don't remember it when I was painting her, but it's quite obvious on the photo. I'm praying it's a shadow from the window. It almost certainly isn't though.

Red Orc - sorry to be the bearer of bad news! I often miss them myself and know how annoying it is to notice it after you've nearly finished!  ::)

Got three of the Sisterhood novices, Mother samantha and the Goddess Rigg based and primed ready for painting so things are moving slowly again. Just spent a pleasant evening glueing together Slann warhounds and Cold One riders so we'll have to see who tempts me most for painting...

Thanks Mason - no worries matey, I seem to be have been off on sabatical for a while too!  ::) Glad to see Krappefort is still a buzzing metropolis.

Thanks Andy - when I get round to gaming this I might have to see if yourself and any other local LAF'ers are up for a game with them?

Thanks very much Blackwolf! Many thanks for the offer but not sure which one you mean by the Amazon Queen - if she's in this pic I do, but I gather there were a few older amazon minis from the Fantast adventurers range?

Ah well - thanks for the thought anyway.

Now you'll just have to paint her up yourself and treat us all to the results  ;)

Evening all - a while since I've paddled down the muddy brown waters of the Amoco River but here we are again with another Lustrian update.

Who is a Slann's best friend?

Why his lizard of course!

Or at least his Cold One Warhound to be specific.

These old chaps have been lurking in the lead pile for far too long. I actually assembled and primed them back in the summer but what with one thing and another remained otherwise untouched until now.

I decided on a vaguely crocodilian colour scheme as that seemed to be the main inspiration behind the minis. To contrast with those earthy tones their rather imposing handler got the yellow treatment with a nice flowery head dress. I had thought of giving him some black markings but this would have identified him with the Venom Tribe braves - he seemed to be of a slightly higher station than that.

I will at some point get some of that jeweller's chain to make a pair of leads for the handler - lord knows I strike a similar pose on a fairly regular basis - leads stretched to breaking point and my two Labs doing their best to dislocate both my arms in their eagerness to greet some new doggy acquaintance! Mind you I have foreseen difficulties in storage, transportation and casualty removal should I tether the Slann handler to his charges. I've seen superglue used to stiffen chain before so that it holds the desired shape - this would negate the need to actually attach it to the Cold Ones, but would be a little brittle. Any advice or tips would be most welcome.

As you might have spotted I've also finished another piece of terrain. I've mentioned Amera before and this is another great (and very reasonably priced) piece from them.

The terrace Ruins were looking pretty good with a simple base coat, drybrush and brown and green ink washes, but I went the whole hog and added extra rubble and crumbling masonry. A few bits of foliage and hey presto - a set of ruins that won't look out of place in the jungles of Lustria or a more Old World setting.

I've also been busy with the old miliput too.  :D

Ever since I saw this pic in the Armies book...

.. I knew that I wanted some Slann. Now that I have some I knew I wanted some Cold One Riders. With Jaguar pelts adorning their scaly backs.

So with the help of some great modelling and sculpting sites (sorry can't remember which now!), the additional pics of this fine specimen from Paul Benson's collection showcased in White Dwarf 98's 'Eavy Metal section, a load of miliput, my trusty Citadel modelling knife and a dried up biro, I set to work.

I knew those marker pens and plastic wallets from work had a better use...

I started off by rolling out the miliput into thin sheets - talcum powder and a plastic sheet are your friends here. Then came the bit that caused me no small amount of trepidation - draping and cutting the miliput sheets into a vague jaguar pelt shape onto the Cold Ones. They didn't look too promising at this stage and I hoped I hadn't just plastered my lovely lizards with putty. However, after a bit of a going over with my old GW stippling brush (a Christmas present I never used for its intended purpose as the bristles were far too stiff to achieve the effects I wanted) the pelts began to look a bit more pelt-like - fur is a very forgiving subject matter!

Then this evening, once the pelts had dried, I came to the tricky bit - sculpting the jaguar heads.

Sometimes you should just dive in and give it a go. My giant's toenails had come out ok, although big cat heads were a slightly different kettle of fish...

Actually they turned out to be quite easy - shame I didn't think to take any progress shots, although  I'm sure some professional sculptor or other sickeningly talented person has created a tutorial somewhere on the interwebz.

First step was a roughly shaped blob to give the basic impression of the head. I used my knife to flatten out the jowls of the mouth and then rolled a tiny sausage that was slightly thicker and flat-ended at one end. This was to become the bridge and nose of the Jaguar once I had blended it into the rest of the face. A few flicks of the knife gave the nose a little definition along with the split in the lips where they meet the nose - whatever the scientific name for that part of a cat's facial anatomy is called?

After that I rolled a slightly thicker and longer sausage and draped it over the top of the bridge of the nose to form what I thought of as the brow ridge - again anatomical names fail me! From here it was a case of messing around, bending it round and blending it in to form the cheekbones and eye recesses - the biro came in handy here.

Finally I rolled out a very small ball of putty, cut it in half and positioned and sculpted the two halves to form the ears. A little light stippling - so as not to squash all my hard work - lent a little texture and covered up the rough bits and voila!

Although I'm no Jes Goodwin by any stretch of the imagination, I'm rather happy with the results, especially as these are my first real attempts at sculpting anything and I kind of made it up as I went along.

Only problem now is that, as well as finishing off my standard bearer with a banner top, I'm going to have to tart up the riders with feathered headgear, spears and other accoutrements after all that...

Any suggestions on making such things would be appreciated!

I may have some spare Aztec shiels and banners that you could steal for bits. Let me have a look, and I'll let you know!

Great work, BTW! This helps me not buy my own frogs!

The Hounds are very nice and came out with a very naturalistic finish.
Well done, Thatman!
 :-*

Nice piece of scenery, too.
The added rubble and undergrowth gives it a new look for sure.

But what really grabs one by the short and curlies are those pelts!
 :o

Great bit of work, especially considering that you have tried any sculpting before.
They came out fantastically well.
Lovely!
 :-* :-* :-*

Now I cannot wait to see some paint on them.
 ;D

(As for adding some feathered headgear to the riders- Have you thought of using some of the feathers from the newer plastic Empire kits? I should have some, if you want them. Let me know and will have a butchers.  ;))

Great additions mate! Will be interesting to see those pelts painted up, hard to make out the details but it looks like you've hit home on them!

Love the handler and his imaginary leash! The croc ones are also very cool little models!

Thanks all!

Phreedh - Afraid I'm still stuck with this old hand-me-down camera after my daughter did for my good old Olympus so pics aren't as good as they should be - think I overlit them a bit, tricky combo yellow and shiny metal! I hope to at least get them primed and base coated tonight so stay tuned.

As for the imaginary leash - that's advanced Slann mind control I'll have you know  ;)

Thank you kindly Mason - very happy with the natural look on the warhounds (always thought that a strange name for them!) - I just hope the handler isn't too garish in comparison.

Thanks for your kind offer of bits - I'll definitely take you up on that if you have any spares.

Thanks also, LeadAsbestos - Nothing like living vicariously for a healthy bank balance  ;)

Those shields and banners sound just the thing - very kind of you!

Pm's sent to both of you  :D

COOL Lizard Lads & Friends! The bow legged ones look SPLENDID on their new/old mounts...I at first thought you added Teddy Bear saddle clothes.
The Handler & his Crocs painted up TERRIFIC. Being a lazy sort, I think I'd just do an extended index finger on his out stretched hand rather than a chain...he already has a "fetch" expression about him; that way you can claim the Lizard Hounds were successful Obedience School Graduates.

Haha - beware the Slann, they're coming for your cuddly toys  >:D

I'll have to resist giving them a teddy bear paint job...

I like the idea of the warhound handler playing fetch.  lol

Mind you if I could make it so the chain was detachable from the handler and the warhounds that might solve the problem...

On the chain thingy: I had some decent luck threading a thin piece of floral wire through the links of section of chain...it let me bend it to shape & paint it without any problems.

I haven't dipped in here for a while but I must say bravo on those jaguar pelts! Milliput's not exactly user friendly to the initiated let alone a beginner! Well done indeed!

Also, great chain idea from Deafnala there. If you can get some VERY fine fuse wire or 0.1/0.2 florists wire to tread through you likely be in luck, I might have to try that myself. Maybe try painting it with watered down PVA too it'll fix it nicely without the brittleness of CA.

Thanks Manic - little update on that coming right up!

Glad you like them Aggro - also glad I don't have an old school Bank Manager!

Thanks for the tip with the chain Deafnala - I'll give it a go when I lay my hands on some suitably small chain.

Cheers Andrew - tell me about it! I usually just use it to fill gaps as it blends away nicely with a bit of water and it was all I had to hand when inspiration struck! The florist wire and pva sounds like a winner - might even get the old trouble and strife some flowers when I visit the florist and earn me some brownie points.

Update today is mainly on these chaps, or should I say chappettes -

May I present to you the Bollrbrjótr - I'm sure you won't need a PhD in Old Norse to work out roughly what it means...

They are led by Njora Bjattey for whom, as per the requirements for the Golden Gobbo's, I have written stats and a background story:

Njora Bjattey
Level 20 Norse Hero

Stats

M  WS BS  S  T  W  I  A   Ld     Int   Cl    WP   Pts
 4   6    4     4  4   3  6  4  10+3   7   8+1  8+1  107

Equipment

Double handed sword and shield

Background

Njora has come, quite literally, a long way since her coming of age in the bleak and quite frankly boring village of Helmfirth.

Completely unimpressed with the, in her opinion, pathetic example of manhood she was expected to be married to, Njora soon became known as a troublemaker. Not content with the daily hum-drum existence of running the homestead, disciplining the slaves and mending the fishermens’ nets, Njora soon came to the conclusion that it should be her wearing the trousers. Despite the fact that she cut a faintly ridiculous sight marching about her business, sporting her husband’s ill fitting britches (which had a tendency to bunch up into a wrinkled mess about her lower legs), there wasn’t a soul in the village brave enough to even dare a smirk at her expense.

And so it came to pass that one day Njora, much to the relief of her downtrodden husband, wrapped up what she considered to be her sword, hitched her britches up one last time and left. It was a time of exploration and colonisation with many enterprising and often clinically insane Norsemen signing up as crew for the long voyage to the fabled land of Lustria. Njora had no trouble finding a place on one of the long ships, despite a small misunderstanding between her and the captain over the issue of cleaning, cooking and mending the sails...

To Njora, Lustria represented a new life to be lived on her terms. She would be free to seek out fame, fortune and her saga would ring out through ages to come. Little did she expect that the same prejudices would be waiting for her in the even more squalid and humid environs of the main Norse settlement of Skeggi. She was back to square one and what was worse, there weren’t even any slaves to flog.

Things came to a head shortly after she had humiliated the entire council of Elders during the annual harvest celebration. Smarting at the implied insult of being requested to freshen the councils flagons with ale, Njora proceeded to procure an axe and began to hack at the huge Hogshead that towered over the banqueting tables. The squealing  and rending of wood splitting down the grain under enormous pressure was the last sound some of the more infirm council members heard before being overwhelmed by a deluge of shattered barrel slats and most of the year’s supply of beer.

This was the last straw and Njora was banished from the settlement and cast forth into the jungle to fend for herself. Where many might have quailed at the dangers that lurked round every corner of the hungry forests, Njora saw that her moment had come. Stopping only to retrieve her trusty sword, she marched resolutely off in search of adventure.

It wasn’t long before the fiery Norse woman realised that she was by no means the first of her kind to suffer this fate. As she penetrated deeper and deeper into the fetid jungle, her brightly striped britches reduced to a single tattered rag of a loincloth, she happened across another settlement... run entirely by women.

Yet it wasn’t that strange culture of Amazons, who the menfolk rightly feared, with their crumbling cities, great temples and technological weapons. The long, low huts had instead an unmistakably Norse flavour to them, as did the aromas of ale and roasting meat that wafted from their direction.  Njora gazed at the sight and smiled - here was her home, among the outcasts of the Norsemen - the Womenfolk too strong-willed for their husbands, too feisty for the berserkers and more adept with a sword than the Bondi could tolerate.

Njora was welcomed in and, as time passed, she rose in prominence amongst her new kin. Her deeds brought these dispossessed women much renown and the men of Skeggi trembled to tell of her wrath. With the slaying of one of the great beasts of the forest and taking its pelt as her own, Njora Bjattey secured her place as Matriarch of the Bollrbrjótr of Lustria.

Special Rules

Njora is a particularly fearsome example of what every sane Norseman fears - the Battle-axe. She exhibits many of the attributes that mark a Battle-axe out from the rest of the fairer sex as one to be feared. She is particularly renowned for her Withering Stare, which has been known to unman all but the most macho, blinkered or plain stupid of male opponents. The only warrior ever to have been unaffected by her icy glare was the famous alcoholic, Crompo. In fact he nearly had the dubious honour of making a good woman of Njora, having challenged her to single combat during a particularly violent raid by the Bollrbrjótr on Skeggi. If he hadn’t fallen asleep after subduing her in a wrestling match of titanic proportions, he might not now be known as Castrato...

Any male character model or male members (sorry!) of a unit that wishes to charge or is charged by Njora must first pass a WP test at a -2 modifier. If the test is failed the charge is carried out as normal but all stats for the model in base to base contact with Njora are subject to a -1 penalty. If the test is passed the charge and combat is carried out as normal.

Any unit or character who is pushed back and followed up by Njora, or the unit she is associated with, is automatically routed.

Missile troops who are within earshot (12”) suffer a -1 to hit penalty if firing at her or the unit she is associated with, due to Njora’s belittling comments and steely gaze.

So there we have it - a new faction for the Magnificent Sven and his merry band to fall foul of somehow - and definitely nothing to do with the Valkyries that were shoehorned into the Lustria of 5th Ed(?). If you have happened to browse through the Lizardman Army Book you'll be familiar with the strange retelling of how the Amazons were descended from the original Norsemen's Wives who were left to fend for themselves when their hubbies went off looking for gold. Forced to take up arms to defend themselves, they were then ejected from Skeggi presumably by the next wave of male settlers, unhappy with all these armed women wandering about. Thus the Valkyries set off and colonised an island somewhere and discovered a strange drug that gave them immortal youth...

Which is just plain silly - I much prefer the version where the Amazons retained their independence during the High Age of the Slann Empire, due to the value the Slann accorded them as thralls and acolytes. With the fall of the Slann Empire, leaving behind a primitive shadow of its former glories, the Amazons continued to prosper as they retained and preserved much of the High Age technology. Now ruled by the same Sisterhood that served the Slann, the Amazons form one of the more populous groups of native inhabitants in Southern Lustria.

In short, crazy, religious, drug chewing Warrior Priest women, who now tote the laser guns their Space Frog overlords once owned...

... Erm, hang on - maybe that sounds a little daft too, but I still prefer it!

Anyway, back to the Bollrbrjótr and here's the rest of the gang - just got a few more Citadel Female Barbarians to track down to finish them off.

Seems a while since I came up with any punning names - hopefully they're not too obscure.

Vaera Dukwróth - Lots of practice with flesh tones and blonde with this lot!

I also decided to carry on the big cat theme on various shields and other items of clothing...

And yes I know you don't get lions in the jungle - she seemed quite lion-y and it is Lustria we're talking about!

Sibyl Fólti - I carried on the cat  imagery on her shield too. This time its definitely a jungle cat - hopefully you might recognise it as an Ocelot from the markings, although I think the green of the eyeball may be a bit dull.

It was quite a nice pallete of colours to work with - flesh, leather browns and gold. Hopefully I got enough contrast into the colour schemes though.

Haha, and for once skimpy outfits and daft metal bikinis can be justified (kind of) what with the heat of the Lustrian sun!

Bót Linche - the black warpaint on their faces actually came about as a bit of a cheat. The eyes are tiny on a lot of their faces and faces themselves are fairly devoid of detail, especially when you're more used to orcs.

I wasn't happy with the way the eyes would often blend into the rest of the face, so the black warpaint became a way of accentuating the bottom of the eye and providing a bit of definition.

That and they look a bit more savage-y!

Brunhilde Ogdunn - I was reminded a little of the Amazonia Gothique by this model - probably the bows and lace thing'ummy on her boot.

Rather than try and slavishly copy the colour scheme I just went for a few suggestive colour choices.

Don't mess - she's a Red Head...

Aena Shárpyls - our last  Bollrbrjótr for now, although I am surprised at the prices some of these minis fetch on ebay. I hadn't realised it was such an avidly collected range.

As Aena is showing a little more leg than the others, I thought I'd go the whole hog with the Conan style camouflage/warpaint thing - good excuse to watch the movie again too!

In other news - the Cold Ones have received a base coat and an ink wash on the jaguar pelts to check they were looking ok.

I'm being very unoriginal with my colour choices and pretty much copying the colour scheme from the Armies book. I love the blue look for the Cold Ones and it'll contrast nicely with the jaguar pelts, which do look a bit bearish at the moment...

Most kind of you Jonas. I now await a certain package full of Aztec warriors and bits and bobs for a bit of converting and tarting up of the Slann riders.

Should get a nice native human slave unit out of them too  :D

Hi all - finally got these fellows finished - Unfortunately work has rather dominated things recently and sapped all energy and motivation - 11 hour days haven't exactly been conducive for spending a few happy hours of quiet concentration in the evening, but I'm done now  :D

... apart from some jungly bits to add to the bases at some point in the future...

As you may have noticed I've added a few Aztec bits and bobs to this glorious remnant of the flower of the Imperial Slann Armies of Mazdamundi. Many thanks go to Lead Asbestos and Mason for supplying various feathers and other accoutrements. Extra special thanks must also go to Lead Asbestos for flogging me loads of Aztec minis who will eventually become a subjugated tribe in thrall to the Gurgyll Greenwake's private army.

I went with the classic green skin for these Imperial Bull Slann - no multi-coloured Venom tribe peasants here! A small(ish) selection of blues, reds, yellows and whites were used to pick out the large amounts of detail and decoration on these minis - almost as fiddly as the Perry Samurai I painted a couple of years ago!

On to the characters that make up this little unit, which I think deserves a little Regiments of Renown style narrative.

Huit-Thabotyl sat up and blinked his large jet-black eyes, which felt as though they were bulging slightly more than usual. With a world weary croak, the Bull Slann heaved himself to his feet and stumbled over to the great mound of scale and muscle that was his slumbering riding beast. Ignoring the shooting pains that stabbed at his temples and the backs of his eyes, the Slann fumbled for one of the flasks that hung about his saddle. The stopper resisted momentarily, but soon enough the soothing warmth of Takilya, a particularly potent brew made from the sap of the finest Spine trees, was coursing down Huit-Thabotyl's voluminous throat.

As the pain receded and his mind was freed from the fog of sobriety, Huit-Thabotyl reflected on the events of the past week. Loud and long had been the fanfares that accompanied the equally long and colourful column of soldiery that had left the Imperial capital of Cotec, with Mazdamuni, himself's blessings. Such had been the multitude of hues and colours, and so great had been the gaiety of the crowds that thronged the Imperial highway, that Ziiii-Thuap, the irredescent Mosquito God would have looked on with envious eyes.

Off they had marched, Spawn Band and Totem Warrior alike, to see off the pathetic incursions of the Dryskins. All had gone well until they had reached the first village that had been plundered by the invaders. The temple shrines had been desecrated and this along with the lack of any survivors shook many of the Spawn Bands to the core. Discipline became a concern within the ranks. Then the invaders struck - not with sword but with a terrible wasting sickness that spread like wild fire through the Slann encampment.

The few survivors of the plague were hastily formed into scouting parties and sent to track down the Humans who had wrought such destruction on the Emperor's finest - many did not return. Those who did spoke of wild apes who were capable of great violence and although a number of skirmishes were won, the Slann ranks were becoming even more dangerously depleted.

The final straw came when the sickness reached the high command. With General Gotta-lotta Bottyl incapacitated the command structure of the Imperial army crumbled. The remnants of the spawn bands melted away into the jungles while the various castes of totem warriors threw their lives away in desperate attacks on the enemy, as honour dictated.

Others, however, went renegade. Huit-Thabotyl had never been one to shirk his duty or walk away from a fight. Nor was he one to squander his life for the abstract notion of honour. Thus it came to be that he and his unit of Cold One Riders did not return to camp as normal after their patrol had been completed. Thus it came to be that Huit-Thabotyl's services were enlisted by the renegade captain, Gurgyll Greenwake. Thus it came to be that a cohort of Imperial cavalry became man-hunters...

Huit-Thabotyl - Leader of 'Botyl's Throttlers (A very rough Norse translation of the Slann - Riders of the Great Beasts, Closers and Openers of throats and keepers of the Golden Hibiscus)

I picked a rather fetching Death's Head motif for his shield design from some of the copious painting guides for historical Aztec forces - you'll see it repeated on the standard and standard bearer's shield too -

Nuathen-Petyl - a strange character from Northern Lustria, chosen to be Standard Bearer for his fortitude and bloody-mindedness. Although the rest of the unit don't often understand his "quaint" Northern dialect, he is well respected for his martial abilities.

Pican-Mixtli - a trooper with a sweet tooth...

Popoca-Fez - terrible singer, dancer and gambler. Quite good at lancing humans though...

And finally - Getmicoatl - the unit's "joker"... and sole possessor of a coat - obviously a South Lustrian and not used to subtropical temperatures.

http://s591.beta.photobucket.com/user/thantsants/media/Slann/100_1009.jpg.html

So what's next?

Well I'm really keen to tackle some of the many lizardmen I've acquired for this project - particularly Karnac's Lizardmen Raiders. However, I'm still missing the champion -

(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/Wants/rr11karnacm1.jpg) :o

Also I have now received the minis my fellow LAF'er,TheBinman, has sent me by way of a small painting commission (doesn't that sound grand!). These chaps, including a couple of Elves, a Gnome and a Snotling,  will be my priority for the next week or two - more on which later, including the rather nice couple of minis I've received in payment...

Nice little croakers! The leopard hides turned out really good!

Good luck finding that Karnac's champion though! The champions are usually bastards to find as they were released much later (they're all slotta models) and not as widely circulated. Which is a pity cause I have several RoR missing one or two command models. =(

Totally agree with that Deafnala - mind you I've got some characterful old Lizards waiting in the wing too...

Cheers Mason - sorry its been a while and glad you liked the names. I figured Getmicoatl would be appropriate in view of some of the terrible puns I've inflicted on the world in the past  ;)

Wow - thanks Spooktalker - praise indeed! I hope to get them in action some time next year...

Belated thanks Jonas!

Here's the next little job for this project -

... a temple of epic proportions!

Well its a start anyway!

So Christmas proved fruitful in Wargaming terms as my family kindly clubbed together to get me 8 molds from the fantastic Hirst Arts.

As you can see I've had a go at casting my first blocks and they came out rather well. Might have to track down a local source of Cristacal R (the high strength plaster I'm using) though as the postage cost me about the same as the 5kg bag I bought...

The molds I went for include the Egyptian Tower Mold #93, Wood Shingle Roof Mold #240, Wooden Plank Mold #220, Wizard's Tower Mold #50, Cracked Floor Tiles Mold #203, Octagon Tower Mould  #63, Dragon's Inn Mold #51 and the Wall Builder Mold #200.

Other than the Egyptian Tower Mold (more of which later) I figured they'd give me lots of flexibility in building Old World style buildings from cottages and Inns to Towers and additional fortifications for my Mighty Fortress, and maybe even some dungeon tiles...

The blocks I've cast up are from the aforesaid Egyptian Tower mold and the Cracked Floor Tiles mold because I want to build this...

...to include the Rigg's Shrine scenario from the Second Citadel Compendium in my Return of the Magnificent Sven campaign.

Spot the similarities?

This is going to be a rather massive build as I intend on constructing all six floors that are detailed in the floor plans included in the scenario.

The Ground floor may prove a little tricky as it is actually below ground level...

The instructions for the Egyptian tower say you need to make 18 castings of the mold to have enough bricks - judging by the picture it looks like this might just about comprise the top couple of floors of the four towers of the shrine! Guess what I'll be doing in between waiting for paint to dry on whatever minis I'll tackling over the next month or so.

I've yet to work out dimensions for each floor but the idea will be for it to comprise most of the playable area on the table. I'll be constructing each floor as separate pieces with some way of allowing miniatures to be placed on different floors simultaneously. It'd be great to do this with each floor stacked up to form the whole building but I haven't really planned out how I'd do this as yet. The alternative of course is to make the floors stackable but lay each floor out side by side on the table during play so on multiple levels can be used at the same time - not as visually striking but a lot easier to build.

Suggestions and any experiences you have had with similar projects would be most welcome!

I may attempt something a little smaller like the Wizard's Tower (http://hirstarts.com/wiztower/wiztower.html) while I'm casting up enough blocks and assembling sufficient slaves to allow building on the Shrine to commence, as a way of familiarising myself with working with this new medium...

Welcome aboard Damien - most of that lot - the Amazons, Slann slaves, etc - were LPL entries from last year - it gave the project a real good kick up the arse in terms of painting. Been slacking a bit since then really  ::)

It might be a while yet Faust  ;)

Dead easy Adam - once you've got it all set up and worked out a good consistency for your plaster. I hope to get churning out a mould's worth of blocks each day so I have enough to start building once I've worked out some dimensions.

Ahem - those have been carefully cultivated with the finest manure for many a year I'll have you know!  lol

Well this post has been a long time in the writing! I had the designs drawn up some time ago and have been cracking on with the build since then. Unfortunately a lack of a scanner at home and literally not having a minute to myself at work has meant that I haven't had a chance to scan in my somewhat colourful plan.

Anyway, for what its worth here it is in technicolour!

As you can see I'm going for a staged build with each floor as a separate element. That way I can stack up the Shrine to have an impressive looking building and when the action spreads to multiple floors, they can be split up and laid side by side on a separate table to allow game play to continue.

Here's the floor plans as included in the Shrine of Rigg scenario on the Second Citadel Compendium.

The Ground Floor - actually its a basement level with a side and back entrance. This floor houses the armouries, storerooms, Koka Kalim guardrooms and dorms and Mother Samantha's offices.

I intend to carve a rocky outcrop out of pink insulation foam (£5 for a massive slab at B&Q by the way!) that will be part of the base for the building. This will go all around the Shrine in the hatched out areas you can see in the pic below.

Because of the sloping walls the ground floor has to be rather large - for every 3" of wall height you lose 1/4" of floor space on the floor above. This meant I had to chop the piece of 6mm plywood I'd bought into two - and actually as the thing is going to be rather heavy it'll be a bit more portable in two sections! The partly built section is the front of the Shrine and you might just be able to make out the outline of the rear of the building drawn out on the sheet of ply stood up in the background.

A few more closer views of what 5kg (there's a load more bricks all bagged up that I don't need yet!) of Crystacal R can make.

The ladies seem fairly happy with the work on their new gaff so far...

At the moment I've been arranging the bricks so that the Egyptian symbols are on the outside as the walls of the whole of the ground floor will be buried behind the rocky outcrop. I think I'll have to alternate which way they're facing on the upper floors - don't think they'll look too out of place?

Bearing in mind that this is only half of the ground floor and that there'll be another five floors above I'd better double the slaves' working hours and break out the bullwhips...

At least some of the upper floors are confined to the towers which have a slightly smaller footfall.

I hope to follow the plans as closely as possible although the squared off bricks that come in the mould have loads of Egyptian symbols and will look out of place for the interior walls for the rooms. I'll have to have a ponder about what to do about them. There are some likely looking 1/4 inch wide blocks on the Egyptian tomb mould that are unadorned and look like they'd make decent interior walls, but that does mean forking out for another mould.

Anyway, here's the rest of the floor plans -

First floor - the main temple area housing the statue of the Goddess Rigg. Also on this floor are various anterooms, priestesses' dressing rooms and Mother Samantha's study.

Second Floor - The Great Chamber or meeting room as well as Mother Samantha's private quarters and the Shrine's strongroom - Mmmm lots of gold here!

Third floor - The library and reading rooms and rooftops of the smaller towers at the front of the building - lots of roof top action here!

Fourth and Fifth floors - these are the top two floors of the two larger rear towers. One is a store room and the other a watchroom.

Actually having read the descriptions of the floors a little more carefully it seems that the third floor of the forward towers and the fifth floor of the rear towers are in fact just details of what is on their rooftops, which I'd have modelled in anyway while building the floor below! My build just got a little smaller, which is no bad thing! Mind you removable roof tops will be a must and I think I'll include a wall around them - much like castle ramparts but without the castellation of course.

The other thing to puzzle over is how to make the floors interlocking but stable so they can stand on their own and what to use as a base for each floor. I'm leaning towards something thin and light like plasticard as the walls and floor will provide the structural strength while the plasticard won't be too thick and show up as an unsightly layer in the exterior of the walls.

Luckily my next order of 25kg of Crystacal made it through the snow so work should resume once I've given the slaves a good whipping!

I wonder whether I'm going a bit over the top with this whole temple thing...

It's bigger than I thought it would be.

I had to build this myself, once upon a time, but never had anything convenient to build the walls from.

I rememer doing the calculation about the different sizes of the floors, but can no longer remember what the differences were (it being nearly 30 years ago that I was trying to work it out). Looking at your schematic, it looks like your walls need to slope inwards at much more than 1/4". The small towers are 9" at their base for instance, but only 5" at the top (the 'floor' of the Third Floor/4th level). If 1st level =9" and 4th level =5" that implies that 2nd level should be 7.66" and 3rd should be 6.33". Either that, or if your slopes are 1/4" per 3" of height, each level needs to be 16" high - leading to a total height of 64.5" (5'4.5"), plus the depth of the base - four 16" levels and a 1/2" parapet...

Maybe I'm missing something here. Apologies if this all wrong and I just haven't grasped how your engineering is working.

So have I now I've looked it up  lol

Red Orc - my mistake  ::) - its actually 1/4 inch lost for each 1 1/2 inches of height. With each floor being 3 inches high, I lose 1/2 inch on the floor above.

In fact my plan is still slightly wrong as I've knocked off 1" per floor. Also I'd originally taken the 3rd floor of the smaller front towers and the fifth floor of the rear towers to be another room, when in fact its only the rooftops being represented in the original floor plans. I'll just be adding them in as removable rooves with some kind of decorative non-sloping 1/2 height wall around the edges and hatches for access in and out.

I think that what's confusing me is that one edge of the towers won't be sloping in. I reckon that the front towers will now be 9" tall (3 storeys) with perhaps a 2" parapet added on top of that -and that the rooftop space will be 6 1/2inches wide and 9 1/2 inches deep. The rear towers will be 15 inches high (5 storeys), again with a 2" parapet on top. The rooftop this time will be 9 1/2" wide and 10 1/2" wide.

I think...  o_o

Cheers Blackwolf!

Here's a question - does anyone know where I can lay my hands (easily?!) on cheap replicas of this kind of Aztec statuary.

I've looked at a few pet stores' websites for fish tank ornaments and other than chance encounters in curio shops or overpriced ornaments on ebay I'm left scratching my head...

Oh yeah and it can't be more than 6" tall so it'll fit in my Shrine!

With a little luck you might find some cheapo jewellery on ebay that would work for smaller statues at least.

I would like to know that also.
I love precolumbine art and I'm always looking for mesoamerican replicas (cheap ones), not for gaming, but I only found expensive museum-shop-like replicas.
If you allow me a suggestion ( and a bit of shameless self promotion ) for an aztec sanctuary i would try to catch something similar to this excellent piece exhibited at the precolumbine art museum of barcelona, IMHO it will make a great "evil god".

The museum store haven't a replica of this piece  :(
In fact the museum and the store are now closed

I know there are Aztec replicas available as tourist items in Mexico You might try PMing magokiron; he's a Forum member, a resident of Mexico City, & a FINE FELLOW...you might be able to work out an exchange.

OK; so a 3" level height will produce a floor-plan reduction of 1/2". But according to the different sizes of floor-plans (just going by the corner towers at the 'front', the small towers) there needs to be a 1.33" reduction per level height.

Essentially, the slope of your blocks is determining the size of the levels, instead of the size of the levels determining the slope of the wall. Do you get the problem I'm outlining here, or am I just manufacturing problems that don't exist?

Also with a 2" parapet, your Amazons won't be able to see over the top...

Thanks Ink - I think that may be a good bet.

I'd forgotten about those bits Comsquare - think I'll be putting an order in  :D

Very nice artwork Donpimpom - that certainly would look at home in the shrine  8)

Cheers Deafnala - I may get in touch, thanks for the tip!

Binman - I shall check it out.

Red Orc - oops, see what you mean about the parapet. I was in a rush to take the dogs out this morning and hadn't thought it through!  ::)

I see what you're getting at - might cause me problems as I go up and try to lay the 1" square paving slabs for the floors.

This was pretty much how I was working - calculating back from a top floor size I wanted to see how big the groundfloor should be.

As long as the blocks continue to line up and fit together without too much sanding down/bodging I'll be happy  :D

No worries mate - I'm making problems that don't exist.

I am agog to see the Shrine in all its glory - obviously, I've been wanting to see it built for about 25 years now!

The other thing I forgot to mention was that I was leaving the walls sloping in on the interior - no spacers to make them vertical - this is what will potentially give some problems with squeezing the paving slabs in for the flooring.

Might leave some fun hiding places behind wall-hung tapestries too!

Nice diagrams by the way - How did your build go - don't suppose there were any pics?
Title: Re: The Magnificent Sven

I could never find a way of overcoming the engineering problems, so there never was a build I'm afraid, let alone any pics. Endless schematics with different level heights and profiles of the temple though. Drawn by hand as this was long before computers could do that kind of stuff.

I did run it as a (O)D&D campaign back in the mid-80s, but we just did as a pencil-and-paper game. That way, any problems of engineering were in the players' heads, I did't have to worry about the precise angles of the walls!

My diagrams show sloping internal walls - the 'spacer' (no idea what it should be called really but figured what it was for was explicable enough) was just to make the internal wall vertical for the top level - I guess when you're standing at a parapet, it makes it easier if there isn't a gap by your knees...

EDIT: because I meant 'angles' of the walls, not 'angels'...
Title: Re: The Magnificent Sven
Post by: Thantsants on January 28, 2013, 07:43:43 PM
Yeah, not many angels to be found in this temple!

I bet the D&D campaign must have been a blast - good way round the build problems.

I thought you had cleverly figured in the "spacer" on each floor and calculated how it affected the measurements of each level - see what you mean about the parapet. I have some straight-backed decorative blocks that should do nicely to top the tower off as a parapet.

I reckon a bit of sanding down on the paving slabs for the floor so that they fit flush with the slope of the wall should avoid any major problems of small variations in measurements.

Back to the casting...  o_o

At last an update on this long running project!

Not on Rigg's shrine - unfortunately the last batch of slaves didn't last too long and although half of the ground floor is now complete (pics to follow at some point), work has stalled a little...

Instead I present to you, fresh from the field of battle that is the Lead Painter's League over on the LAF, the Stoutbacks. Unfortunately these noble Norse warriors didn't win against the rather fine Norman knights they were pitted against but no matter - I have the full set and they are painted!

If you haven't already seen Harry's fine efforts or aren't well up on 2nd ed. scenarios (what's the matter with you?!) then read this (http://www.solegends.com/citcat1983comp1us/citcomp1us012-02.htm).

(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/Kremlo%20the%20Slann/100_1513_zps569b6ed4.jpg) (http://s591.photobucket.com/user/thantsants/media/Kremlo%20the%20Slann/100_1513_zps569b6ed4.jpg.html)

The team I entered for the LPL include a couple of none Kremlo scenario models -

(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/Kremlo%20the%20Slann/100_1514_zps2b4c42d1.jpg) (http://s591.photobucket.com/user/thantsants/media/Kremlo%20the%20Slann/100_1514_zps2b4c42d1.jpg.html)

Standard Bearer - don't know the manufacturer as I picked him up second hand but he's a preslotta

(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/Kremlo%20the%20Slann/100_1516_zps2eb55fc5.jpg) (http://s591.photobucket.com/user/thantsants/media/Kremlo%20the%20Slann/100_1516_zps2eb55fc5.jpg.html)

As the the scenario invloves a Norse tribe who has, by a curious trick of fate, ended up with a Slann as their Chieftain I went with a frog design for the banner and many of the shields. My colour choice was largely inspired by Kremlo's Bluespinespick heritage.

The other none scenario model is this musician from the later slotta range of Norsemen from Citadel - the first round of the LPL was a bonus round with extra points for going with the command group theme, so I thought it best to include a srtandard and horn blower in case it wasn't clear who they were to any heathens unfamiliar with old Games Workshop scenarios!

(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/Kremlo%20the%20Slann/100_1517_zpsbd1b18d6.jpg) (http://s591.photobucket.com/user/thantsants/media/Kremlo%20the%20Slann/100_1517_zpsbd1b18d6.jpg.html)

More blue frogs!

(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/Kremlo%20the%20Slann/100_1518_zpsc8f9d083.jpg) (http://s591.photobucket.com/user/thantsants/media/Kremlo%20the%20Slann/100_1518_zpsc8f9d083.jpg.html)

So on to the Stoutbacks.

First up are the two younger sons of Harold Stoutback - the former Chieftain of the tribe, who's death on a hunting trip and curious affection for the orphaned Kremlo plunges the brothers into the strange and not entirely welcome position of losing their inheritance to a frog!

Ben - the older of the two.

There's not much info on the rest of the gang who set sail to take their revenge on Zapotec. Nice little set of minis though!

As for fitting them into the Magnificent Sven project - here's a link to the scenario (http://teasgettingcold.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/two-legends-collide.html) I came up with which should see them bolstering Sven's ranks or becoming lobotomised slaves for the Slann!
