Title: Character shots (new Pics)
Post by: Doomhippie on April 16, 2010, 10:34:38 AM
Since January I've been working on and off on some rules for a fantasy skirmish game (just for the fun of it). However, I've also painted the odd miniature to be used as characters various scenarios. Some of these miniatures were painted over 20 years ago, so there is bound to be some variety in both style and skill. Oh, and yes, I am really not good at painting eyes. Maybe I shouldn't take portrait shots but I intend these to be used on the character sheets.
So here we go.

Daris the thief. Some of you might remember him from a Broadsword scenario I put in here a few years ago...

Mirandor, son of a noble family fallen on hard times. His quest in life is to find his sister, abducted by slavers. Another Broadsword veteran.

Connor the barbarian. He does what barbarians traditionally do: picking fights, getting all the girls and never get cold no matter how scantly dressed they may be. It's an old miniature I have touched up in - hm - almost all places.

Another one of these. Same tribe? Who knows, who cares...

... and the third of the bunch. Actually my favourite.

The ex-pit fighter. Could be a nice hero but just as well a great opponent. We'll see.

Maybe Daris buddy? Or his rival? Lot's of opportunities here.

No fantasy setting is complete without a cute sorceress. Will she fall under the spell of the barbarians or will her speels shrivel important... assets first? Stay tuned.

Oldie but goldie, the Mordheim necromacer. We really need the ultimate antagonist of every second story, don't we.

The druid. An ancient GW miniature but I still like it.

Not quite sure what to do with this one. It's a great miniature, maybe and elite warrior from some not quite so civilized country. But with so much dynamics in the model I just had to put him in here.

The hard working if somewhat incompetent city guard. Oops, forgot the eyes of the captain.

The slavers from the south.... Maybe they are the fellows who took Mirandor's sister away?

One of the LotR ruffians fits quite well in here as a mugger.

The notorious Ali Babuk, who either doesn't know how to apply eyeliner or hasn't slept in a hundred years. We'll find out.

Okay, those are my current batch of characters, I'll be painting more but it's a start.

Looks great. I'm intrigued by the mention of 'rules', do you care to expand further?

Nothing spectacular. I wanted a set of rules that on the one hand makes combat fairly easy and quick but on the other hand does have a skill system. The idea came up after looking through a few of Driscoles Conan comics in January. I'm not sure if should ever publish them, as lots of ideas come from other games like Triumph and Tragedy or Broadsword. And right now I'm just in the state of trying out the basic rules to see if it works at all.

These are really nice, very characterful stuff.

And the eyes on them are fine, don't put yourself down.

Nice.

Been painting "historicals" for a while so gearing up for more fantasy stuff.  Yours are good inspiration.   :)

Lots of great stuff there.

They are an evocative group of archetypes too.  I can almost hear the crappy dialogue from some budget Sci-Fi channel sword and sorcery made-for-TV movies when I look at them.

And I mean that in a good way :)

The colours on Daris buddy/rival with the red hood are particularly nicely chosen.

The hard working if somewhat incompetent city guard. Oops, forgot the eyes of the captain.

Oh come on.
If he would see an enemy he would have to fight him. But closing his eyes he can just say "everything is fine today".  ;)

Your RPG characters are lovely
I'd love to game with them

Eyes? well, without specs and bending over I can hardly see them anyway
Or does anyone play with a magnifying glass? ;)

Well, inspite of all the hassle I had with work lately I did finish a few more miniatures. Here are some of them.

This one shows a village boy and some militiamen (though the right one actually is a viking in training...)

Here we see a pack train (usuable for anything from fantasy to actually 1930s) and yet another militiamen/caravan guard.

Two more kids from the village. Magnified like this the painting doesn't really look all that good but what the heck? Their job is to hang around in the background.

Yet another villager doing his boring but vital task of carrying water to and fro in the background.

The village blacksmith. He looks rather grumpy but that's what you get for standing close to the furnace all day. Which, by the way, is made by Pardulon. I haven't found a nice anvil yet. Maybe anybody here can help me out?

Granny working on the dinner.

The potential sacrifices to the dragon (which I dont have yet...). Of course they are from pulp miniatures and fit into any setting.

The oriental city guard/caravan guard or personal guard to the wise man hanging around them...

So much for now, hope to get some done soon.

Now that you mention it you are right.  lol
I guess I used the same color scheme and personally I think that pulp miniatures have a rather cartoonesc quality about them.

I am a fan of Bob Murch, but sometimes his poses are a bit rigid and unnatural, and his female figures often put me in mind of the Ed Wood picture Glen or Glenda?

What a great set of minis and lovely paint jobs too! Looks like you'll have some great games with that little lot! 0 8)

I'm looking for villagers and militiamen myself for the Linden Way militia of of Orc's Drift - where did they come from? The spearmen with the pack train and the fellow with the warhammer would be ideal!

I remeber them to be from Foundry, 100YW or WotR

Been taking a closer look at your forge - nice work on the glowing coals!

There isn't an anvil but Ainsty do a nice forge that comes with a big set of bellows - http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/aiddebris.htm

The kids, at least, look like Mirliton.  See their diorama kits (specifically the Medieval village people).  I think the kid eating the carrot is in the Medieval kitchen set.  So is the woman plucking the goose.

Just looked; he is.  So is the sitting boy.

There.  Lots of lovely civilians, and some of them actually standing up.

I have (I'm ashamed to admit) all of those sets.  I've even painted some of them; need to do the others one day. But then I look at others' nice work and think, "why bother?  I suck."  ;)

Foundry and others have a reasonable anvil, I have several that were part of purchases from DaveT.

Very nice, and thanks again for sharing!

Who makes the models of the two kids - the one sitting and the other one lying down eating something?  I don't remember seeing them before.

Ignore my question about who made the kids - it had already been answered (by my own wife, no less, and we have them... doubly embarrassing).  I posted without realizing there was a page two to this thread.  That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I haven't finished them yet, too much hassle with the work. I'll try to do some serious playtesting this summer and maybe I will at one point publish them somehow.
