Title: Russian/Siberian/Central Asian civilians?
Post by: Hammers on May 05, 2010, 06:32:48 PM
With all these wonderful BoB miniatures every where, what civilians do we have to go with them?
Chinese were pretty much omnipresent and can be found with Pulp Miniatures, Brigade and Obelisk (wonderful set, that).
Foundry and Eureka make Indian civilians, the latter's sets have a lot of character.
West Wind, Old Glory and Blue moon make North African, Middle Eastern civilians which will work for Arabia, Persia and Afghanistan at a pinch

I know of no suitable Russian civilian, nor any Turkmenes, Mongols, Tibetans...

You could also use some from Musketeer VBCW and Pulpfigures Savage Seas ranges if You remove the weapons
Don't know much about SCW ranges, but such could be useful too

Irregular miniatures has some civilians: muslims, arabs, buddhist monks, yak or bactrian camel attendants (plus of course with yaks and camels) and vaious eastern dress items.

Perry miniatures has some muslim civilians that might also work. they also have a set of japanese civilians that can be used (maybe) to represent some japanese minority.

You may also find some civilians in curtey's miniatures ranges,  like the scribe and assistant set, and some peasants and civilians that might be added for variety, though most are in more early/traditional dress. Also some chinese rowers and small sampans, that can populate some river/lake of yours.
they also have a pack of mongolian camp followers:

some other source might be some horse holders from other ranges that can be used.
and maybe some gems can be found in the crusades (muslim) ranges from other manufacturers. Maybe some ancient ranges can provide few suitable figures.

last but not least take a look at askari miniatures. they do have some sets of diggers and market vendors. most suitable for north africa or middle east but at least some can find their way in the bazaars of central asia!

I also recommend to see mega miniatures arabian townsfolk, for street entertainers etc.

As for russians: to best of my knowledge there are not any dedicated figures, except those railwaymen by brigade games.

For adding variety you may use some cossack peasants and priests by Foundry and OldGlory. Maybe not the most correct but add some variety and are useful for peasants. Also remember that prior to the Bolshevik revolution many russians, specially employees in the services and students carried uniforms (like those of brigade game.

Not bad, arg. Those cossacks may work, as I am in particular looking for Russian babushkas, kulaks, serfs and such.

Out of period but perhaps with a little work, how about something like these?

Westwind do some Vietnam ones that could be used for the Far East. Not quite what you're looking for but I thought I'd throw them in the mix too:

Indeed. I have purchased a couple of packs and my intention  is to use them to populate, sometime in the future,  some of my eastern towns like Kashgar etc
